Panthers extend Garry Williams and Gary Barnidge: Update
The Carolina Panthers have signed two players currently on injured reserve to contract extensions. The Panthers made the moves in late November, but never officially announced that offensive lineman Garry Williams was signed to a two-year extension and tight end Gary Barnidge was signed to a one-year extension.
Williams was given a $400,000 signing bonus. He’s scheduled to make $550,000, plus a $100,000 workout bonus in 2012. In 2013, his salary will rise to $900,000 with a $100,000 workout bonus.
Barnidge was given a $50,000 signing bonus. He’s scheduled to make $615,000 next season and also can collect a $25,000 workout bonus.

Update:
With Gary Williams locked up, what does this mean for the future of Carolina's OL if Anything
A. Panthers view him a potential Starter at ROT or LOT down the road, either as an upgrade over Bryon Bell or understudy for Jordan Gross. He might have a future as a starter, at LOT and has a chance to be eased into if Gross can keep play for several more years.
B. Panthers believe his can switch in side to be a future at either RG or Lg. I don't think this is possible given his size, (6-3, 296)
C. He is just depth/insurance on Bryon Bell not progressing and Otah never healing.
Impact on the Future: He might be the answer for depth at LOT, meaning the panthers can focus on either resigning Geoff Schwartz or Geoff Hangartner...or drafting a RG or LG. While many people think the panthers should draft defense (DT) defense (LB) defense (DB), with good reason, I think it might be time to invest a third or even first rounder on our o-line considering they protect the most important player and the age on the left side (31 and 32) and injury on the right (Otah and Schwartz).
Gary Barnidge
A. Our replecement for J. Shockey. Possible as the panthers could go with Hartsock and Oslen with Gary at the number two
B. Will be welcomed back in as the third TE in the rotation after panthers resign Shockey
I think the panthers let shockey go somewhere else, unless that can keep him here cheaply, when considering the whole on the OL and Defense
What are you thoughts??

I anticipate we'll let go of Hartsock after the season
Barnidge can be #3, pretty good trio of guys.

the staff was pretty excited about going into the season with Olsen, Shockey and Barnidge…Rivera said they were really upset he went down. he was really doing well in this system in the preseason.

I like Barnidge
I was disappointing that he didnt play last year and even more disappointed that he got hurt this year. He has the chance to learn behind Shock and Olsen and should be a very good TE in time
I really think that Olsen is kind of soft as a TE
Not that I don’t like him but he just doesn’t make those tough catches and drops the ball on impact too often. Hopefully Barnidge can develop into something. I really wouldn’t mind drafting a monster TE if there is one. Someone like Jermichael Finley

I think that Olsen being soft is fair assesment.
I posted a similar question to the Bears SB blog and asked them for their honest opinion. Apparently Greg is known for not being a physical player and works better with space rather than contact. Hopefully though, working with Smitty and Shockey can develop his aggressive element.

I am still glad we have him. It would have been nice if he had cost a 4th round pick instead of a 3rd.

+1
I have no regrets whatsoever about that one.
Sure, I’d like to see a couple more things from him, but he is still a great player.

There were calling him "Charmin"
because he’s soft like the brand of TP. He does go down easily when tackled but I still think he’s a great TE.

That's a good assessment
Hes basically a bigger wide receiver, but all in all I love what he brings to the table.

He is a more of a finesse TE. We got Shockey who is a hell of a lot tougher but he is older and that play has led to a lot of injury’s in his career. Hard to break bones if you avoid contact….Hopefully Barnige can be a little bit of both. I do know he is a great receiving option. Big reason he was never used in the Fox era. I know some here and ive heard of others elsewhere who were really big on him and i never knew why. We saw a little why in pre season but i can only imagine what he could look like with a full training camp with Cam and rehabbed and back better then he was ever before.

You’re in luck. There’s a TE from Stanford University named Levine Toilolo. He is 6’8 and weighs in at 265lbs and very athletic. He is similar to Jimmy Graham in someways but I don’t know whether he has declared for the 2012 draft. still its something Hurney, Chud and Rivera should look at. We need a young star TE to grow with Cam.

Toilolo Is A Readshirt Soph. In The 2014 Draft
As ranked by nfldraftscout.com, TE Levine Toilolo isn’t even the top ranked TE from the 2014 draft class, on his own team. Here are some of the top ranked TE’s in the 2014 draft (all are 3rd year Soph.).
1. Tyler Eifert (6-5, 249, 4.80-40) Notre Dame
2. Zach Ertz (6-6, 250, 4.79-40) Stanford
3. Arthur Lynch (6-5, 272, 4.68-40) Georgia
4. Levine Toilolo (6-7, 263, 4.86-40) Stanford
7. Dion Sims (6-5, 276, 4.68-40) Michigan St.

kudos on Barnidge
The guy was playing great in preseason. He will definiteley play a lot next year. Williams was playing rg went he got hurt. I see a lot of upside for him too.
Not to be a jerk or anything
But if you’re just gonna copy and paste an article from somewhere, I’d think you’d be better off just posting a fanshot. I may be wrong though.
Anyway, I like the signings.

So do I. I watched a Youtube video yesterday of Panthers highlights. It showed Barnidge
running through two guys after catching a short pass. The guy has some skills and toughness.
But Barnidge Didn't Catch A Pass in 2010, Though He Dropped A Few
2009 was the only year in his 4 year career that he’s caught a pass, 12, for a 20.2 yard average, and no TD’s.
I’ve liked Barnidge since before he was drafted, but I wouldn’t count on him to be more than a 3rd TE until his production improves. He will be 27 next season, so unless he post good numbers next year, his time in the NFL will be running short.
i REALLY hope we don't get rid of shockey
sure, Barnidge might be able to produce more, who knows… but Shockey’s become a leader for this team, and we’re very short of those right now. this guy brings heart, and i always see him hugging and laughing and banging on other players on the sideline. he makes plays, still, so i see no reason to cut ties.
better get 'em now!
we had planned on going into the season with 4 TE’s…i dont see why next year will be any different.

Well I think they consider Olsen to be a WR/TE hybrid.
