A Very Merry Ask The Falcoholic!

Sorry this is so late, Panthers fan. It's been a long week already.

As you know, I'm Dave Choate from The Falcoholic, and our teams are playing this weekend. If you have any questions about the Falcons and their bumpy up-and-down season to this point, I'm happy to answer them for you.

If you wouldn't mind Recommending this so it remains near the top of the list, I would appreciate it. Here's to a great game!

How is Turner's Grion and Jones' Hamstring?

Do you think they play this week fully or they give they about 20 snaps so they don’t get lost for the season?

by panthertillidrop on Dec 7, 2011 9:57 AM EST reply actions

Turner's groin is okay

It might affect his burst, but they’re just going to run him into the line over and over anyways.

Jones should be fine. I’m more concerned with his mental mistakes than his hammy at this point.

So I keep hearing from Falcons fans that you guys are too obsessed with the deep ball, and that's what is killing your offensive momentum. Thoughts?

Cause personally, I love the idea of your coordinator forgetting he has a running game against our defense lol

It's really more the screen game

Just learned that the Falcons have thrown just 16 screen passes all season, which is the lowest total in the NFL. That’s taggering.

What is stronger overall in Falconville:

The faith in the Falcons defense or the fear/respect of a Cam Newton-led Panthers offense? And why?

Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY! (or least some really awesome Under Armour commercials)

At this point, probably the fear

We have a theory Julio Jones and Roddy White are too similar of WRs to co-exist...

If one has a good game the other doesn’t. Thoughts on that?

I think Jones is a bigger, faster, more physical version of White

I think the problem is that Jones is still a rookie receiver prone to mental mistakes, and he’s not as sharp a route runner as White. The Falcons are still trying to force the ball to him.

I think someone posted that Peter King said he would vote for Dalton.

But I also read that King reported that misquote of the Bucs coach like it was true.

Actually King said he was leaning towards Newton.

Ryan throws an awful lot of picks... What's up with that?

Last year he only threw 9 total (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) which was near the bottom of the league. This year that figure has really gone up a lot. Any reason for that?

by aceofsween on Dec 7, 2011 11:16 AM EST reply actions

Poor protection, an emphasis on the deep ball, a lack of screens

Probably in that order. He’s really had a tough go of it this year. His accuracy on deep balls has never been that impressive.

At one time the Falcons were our arch rival in the NFC South

personally I feel like that’s switched to the Saints. Not because of win percentage or anything it just seems the old “Dirty Bird” days of the Falcons have gone away and the Saints are that nasty team that thrive on “extracurricular activity”.

Even outside of the division they play this way, Lions game Monday night: Roman Harper tries to smack the ball out of a receivers hand after a TD, CB desn’t allow TE to signal first down after a catch, jawwing it up with PR until he throws the ball at his face not to mention all the chippiness…they’re dirty.

Do you notice this when the Falcons play the Saints?

Oh, I notice

The Saints and Falcons legitimately don’t like each other, so it’s little surprise they jaw and scrap a lot during those games. Didn’t realize they were like that with you, but it figures.

I kinda disagree personally...

I would much prefer to wipe the Falcons every year and split with the Bucs than to lose even once to the Falcons.

Can you explain the Jekyl/Hyde nature of your defense

One moment they look like world beaters and the next just “OK.” Don’t get me wrong, we’d love to have a top 10 defense. I’ve just watched a couple of Falcons games and the D seems wildly inconsistent.

It's the nature of the zone they play

They’re prone to big plays, and they force a lot of third and longs because they’re typically so good. That’s where they tend to struggle.

Is there a legitimate future at TE beyond Gonzalez?

We all know he is one of those rare age-less players, but eventually something has got to give. Is there a development prospect that could be a stud behind him?

Michael Palmer and Marquez Branson are decent developmental guys

But there’s no stud TE prospect on the roster. That may change after this next draft.

What would you identify as the biggest weakness on the Falcon's D?

I know their personnel on the offensive side of the ball pretty well, but haven’t heard much about their defense.

by jcbouche on Dec 7, 2011 12:39 PM EST reply actions

It's the secondary right now

Brent Grimes and Kelvin Hayden are hurt, as well as safety William Moore. With those three guys out, it’s gotten a lot easier to pass on the Falcons.

Atl. def.

I know Atl. run def. has been very good this year though they did get gashed by hou. last week. how confident are you that they can stop our run game which has been really good last 9 weeks.

by oldpanther on Dec 7, 2011 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Atl.

Do you think they will have a spotter on cam and who do you think it could be.

by oldpanther on Dec 7, 2011 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think they can do it

I don’t know that they got gashed last week. Foster had a couple of nice runs and a lot of three yard grinds. The Texans just committed to the run.

44 rushes- 169 yds. Hou. did commit to run because of rookie qb. and it seemed like Atl. could load up for it. They want have that luxury this week with facing Newton. I think that will open up our run game.I hope so, anyway. Regardless how this game turns out, Atl got big break with injuries in Chi. and Det. fading fast.

by oldpanther on Dec 7, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

What are your thoughts on Ray Edwards this season?

Was he worth the money? And is there a bit of concern among the Falcon faithful since Edwards in my opinion hasn’t lived up to his reputation and Abraham is a free agent/getting older?

Jacquizz Rodgers or Jason Snelling?

It seems that every time the Panthers and Falcons meet up, Snelling will inevitably make a big play or two. But, as of late, who has been more productive, and who will be a bigger factor catching balls out of the back field…Snelling or Rodgers?

by RonnieHawkins97 on Dec 7, 2011 4:59 PM EST reply actions

I think Rodgers has infinitely more promise

The coaching staff doesn’t know how to use him properly, however, because Mike Mularkey comes from the HERP DERP school of running your backs up the middle. Both are effective weapons out of the backfield, though.

hate the birds...

but this post may simultaneously chortle and feel sorry for your playcalling. could really see Rodgers being used similarly to how Forte is being used in Chicago.

which leads to the question : how many more miles do you see on Turner?

by Lost_terrapin on Dec 9, 2011 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

My question is how are Julio Jone's hands?

I think he plays a major role in if we win or not, we’ve been able to practically shut down #1 WRs this year thanks to Chris Gamble but Munnerlyn has been getting burned all year long.

I know Julio had problems catching early in his college days but I thought that was behind him but now i’m hearing that he doesn’t catch too well

He drops too many balls

I don’t really know what’s behind it because I can’t get in his head, but he’s having problems with getting open and holding on to the ball. I suspect it’s rookie concentration issues.

This might have been asked above but...

Do you think the Falcons are going to put a spy on Cam, and if so, who do you think it would be?

I hope it's Sean Weatherspoon

He’s deadly against mobile quarterbacks. Any of our linebackers are an option, but ’Spoon is by far the most athletic.
