Replacements picked, no big names.... shock! horror!
The names won't move the needle, but then again we didn't expect them to. Tonight the Carolina Panthers have signed DTs Ogemi Nwagbuo, formerly of the San Diego Chargers and NC native DeMario Pressley most recently with the Denver Broncos.
Nwagbuo played in 15 games last season in Ron Rivera's defense and totaled 19 tackles. The 25 year old out of Michigan State adds some size at the position as he weighs in at 312 lbs and clearly he's a player Ron Rivera was happy to bring in, the next Charger in line for the Panthers.
DeMario Pressley is a more interesting case. A 5th round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2008 the Greensboro, NC native and NC State alum was on injured reserve his first season and cut by the Saints in 2010. He's bounced around numerous teams before arriving in Carolina, and despite not playing a down in a few years he has a Superbowl ring which he won with the Saints.

Not really surprised.
Then again, there aren’t exactly any big names at the DT position waiting for a call and that would be able to work. At least we’re back up to four DTs — that’s the important thing.
Why don't we just grab a couple of DB's instead?
No where does it say that we need more DT’s. Our DT’s have been ineffective anyways. ;)
DeMario Pressley has a Super Bowl ring?
He's clearly our best DT. He wins games.

if he wins games he deserves ROY he’s not a rookie? Well, shoot. You guys wanna talk about Tebow?

Hey he's from Greensboro yaaaay me too.
I just wanted to gay the blog up a bit sorry.
When someone tells you that you are one in a million, what they are really saying is that there are about 1400 of you in China.
smh...
Not surprised though…..(sigh)

Why smh?
I’ll never understand this. People want names they recognize but pay no attention that every team in the NFL clearly has no interest in them. Instead of going with an ancient retread, why not try to catch lightening in a bottle with a youngster?

I like the Obi signing from the Chargers, played all 16 games last season on the top ranked Chargers defense. It’s not a household name but I like it. Im telling you guys, I hate to see anyone get hurt and I’m not glad our guys got hurt. But it can’t be a coincidence that when Fua was out and McClain out the 2nd half that we just so happened to have our best showing of run D the entire season.
I’m personally excited that Neblett and Kearse are starting for us. They are an upgrade over Fua and Mcclain
by PantherTrain on Dec 6, 2011 7:33 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Infact I’m actually a lot more hopeful now for a win on Sunday that Neblett and Kearse are starting. You could see a noticeable difference for the better when Kearse and Neblett played. I mean my god, we held Blount to just 19 yds! Thats huge
by PantherTrain on Dec 6, 2011 7:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
McClain contributed in the first half
& while I’m not going to slight Kearse or Neblett (I thought they did well and played hungry) the eye-test also told me that Big Money (and the other DE’s, but mainly Big Money) had a lot to do with the outcome of that game. He was all over the place making hustle plays and even when he didn’t get credit for a play you could see his influence.
The next few weeks will be a good evaluation for the line against 3 playoff bound teams (assuming the Saints are still playing for a first round bye). Not to mention each team has a star RB or two, each with their own style

But... but... I wanted Pat Williams!!!!

Ideally I want Pat Williams. Like it or not they are going to have to bring in a couple vets to help us make a run next year. They don’t need to be big flashy names, Soliai or Pat Simms will do just fine thank you. You can only use the “rebuilding process” excuse for one season, next season it’s playoff run.

Problem with Pat Williams
He’s almost 40. I can’t see a 40 year old, 330 pound man having anything in the tank to play at a high level.
None of our DT's are playing at a high level.
I’m not advocating Pat Williams but a high level can’t really be our expectations out of anyone we get right now.

He was 330lbs in playing shape
There’s no telling how big he is right now.

why!?
Williams is old farther time. Give some young kids a chance so the coaching staff can fully evaluate them and their contributions on game day. Pat williams isn’t the future so what the hell is the point in us signing him. It would be a waste of time and he’s crap anyway. Maybe ten years ago but not now, the mans as old as brett farve for gods sake. Well…. Got a bit carried away there so I’ll stop

Pat Williams is probably also way out of shape
by the time he gets back in the groove, season is over. He is a guy you’d need to sign early.

Anyone else miffed?
I was thinking that CJ shouldn’t have gotten credit for that sack against the Buc’s and that it should’ve been Hardy. Anyone else feel that way?
No it was CJ.
He grabbed the qb around the legs before anyone else was there. Definitely a CJ sack.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
Pressley is Soft
I’m from Greensboro as well and played against him in high school. Now I know that’s been a while but he hasn’t done anything in the league either. He wont make it til August. OG on the other hand may be a serviceable back up.
by la_flare on Dec 6, 2011 8:45 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Thankfully we don't need him till August, just for four more games.

But that comes across as very bitter, IMO.

Not bitter at all. Out team had 2 Shrine Bowlers and they had 2 Shrine Bowlers. We beat them and later went to the state championship game.

Just a hunch...
But if you make it into the NFL, at all, you can’t be THAT soft.

The backup DT's did a right fine job!
They held LeGarette Blount to 19 yards! This is the Panthers run defense. Let’s be honest, no OC has been sleepless worrying about the Panthers run defense this season.
Most teams with Number 27 on the roster and their starting QB out of the game would be running the ball against a bad run defense with both starting DT’s out of the game.
I’m wondering why Neblett and Kearse haven’t seen more time on the field this season.
Then again, hindsight …
We already had Jason Shirley
He moved from the practice squad to the 53, Pressley replaced him on the practice squad.
surely you cant be serious
I’m always serious, and don’t call me shirley

I'm morbidly dissapointed that you did not pick better players, James.
