Panthers Run Past Bucs 38-19 as Newton Breaks Rushing Record
There was plenty to be happy about for Panther fans in this one. But it all starts with rookie QB Cam newton and his record setting day. Newton was deadly in the red zone as he kept it simply, scoring three touchdowns on the ground and throwing for a fourth. Truly a day for the rookie to celebrate little as the Panthers string two in a row.
I would be remiss to not mention the defense and the fact they held the Bucs to FGs on 4 drives and and more importantly held LeGarette Blount to 19 yards on 11 carries. DE Charles Johnson had a big day with a sack, 3 tackles for a loss, a pass defensed and a QB hurry. The defensive line played pretty good as a whole keeping pressure on back-up QB Josh Johnson.
This is now a post-game open thread!

Man- that was painful
Congratulations Panthers fans. Well played- the better team took it today. We have officially supplanted y’all as worst in the division- hurts to say it, but the proof was out there on the field today.

Right now, I think 5-11 is the best we can hope for this year- and 4-12 is looking more and more realistic.

I felt this would be a signature game for Cam Newton and I was right. 4 TDs on the day. I cant wait for next week. I’ll be there live next week when Cam Newton sets yet another record, most total TDs accounted for by a rookie. Peyton Manning set it in 1999 with 26 total TDs. With Cam’s 4 TD game, he tied that record today. Next Cam Newton TD sets a new record.

I watched the Denver game and tebow kept them in it for his defense and special teams to win it, that defense gave up 32 points. Tebow is 6-1 newton is 4-8 despite all of newtons stats who are you covering? If newton was 8-4 he’d be named ROY the year by now. No one really said newton couldn’t make it the way they said tebow couldn’t with the offense he ran in college and that atrocious throwing motion newton will have his day just be patient.

just ask the refs in all of our games this year, except today ofcourse.
Like that Munnerlyn facemask that didn't get called.
Worked in our favor, since it meant it was a three-and-out for the Bucs, but still… we got lucky on that one, I think.

Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
No. I’m being realistic. Tebow didn’t get that pick and Tebow didn’t kick that FG. It is the same BS argument people are using to say Dalton deserves the OROY, because he “just wins games”. No. Both him and tebow have won against shit, and have had good defenses making plays at opportune times.
Tebow is not an NFL QB. Never will be to me.

YOU DON"T GET IT
Tebow intimidated Ponder into throwing that interception. He’s the reason Peterson was too hurt to play. He dresses up as Prater and makes every FG. I think Tebow is awesome and he gets all the credit. He’s the reason the Raiders couldn’t score on the Dolphins today. And they need to quit giving Von Miller credit for Tebow’s 10.5 sacks he got when he played on defense.

Tebow plays a part on that team, a pretty dang important one too. It doesn’t matter how ugly his stats are, we should know this better than anyone that a QB doesn’t have to be conventional to have success. You can’t argue the results, Tebow is 6-1 and has the Broncos tied with the Raiders for the division lead after starting 1-4. And the vaunted defense that has been winning Tebow’s games for him allowed 30 points today.
Yes I'm a dude.

now tebow is responsible for Norv’s failings and Oakland’s WR woes? when will the credit end? as far as the defense goes, i didn’t see a game winning drive tonight, i saw a game winning interception. guess i’m in the national minority on this one.

disagree
Tebow completed over 60% of his passes for over 200 yards and 2 TDs with no turnovers. He has 13 total TDs to just 2 turnovers this year. 22 career TDs to just 4 turnovers. That’s gotta be good for something.

Dalton vs. Newton
So some people are starting to say Dalton deserves OROY over CAM (not on CSR, though). Dalton has 7 wins, CAM has 4. Today Dalton was 11 of 24 in a loss. CAM through a TD, ran for 3TDs (breaking a 35 year old record), and caught a 27 yard pass. CAM is unbelievable, and only gonna get better.
Cam deserves ROTY
There are those that may argue for Dalton for ROTY in terms of wins and losses and on the context that he may be a better passer. Those people are idiots. Cam Newton is awesome when the ball is rolling.

passing
I also think CAM is a better passer. He’s asked to make tougher throws than Dalton, and he has more pass attempts anyway, but he still has a higher QB rating and completion percentage after today’s games.
He has more total TDs by a long shot (Pass+Run)
I still say lets ask the Bengals blog if they would trade Dalton for Newton straight up. I would bet they wouldn’t even hesitate to get Cam. Enough said!

ESPN just put up that Newton broke the record on the first page
not the cover story but at least it’s on the first page
I still say that Panthers go 6-10 or 7-9 on the season.
I think we could potentially beat ATL, HOU, TB, and NO. They should all be close games, with a chance to win all of them. Not saying at all that will win out, but we should be able to win 2 or 3 of these.
ATL is beatable, but turner will probably get back on track against our D. HOU I’ll say no. Their running game and D will be hard to stop. TB is winnable and the NO game should be as well because they will probably rest their starters for that one by week 17.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
Brees will play
He’ll be going after Marino’s yardage record that week.
Remember what he said a few years ago when he was chasing it.
Something about how the record doesn’t mean anything if the team isn’t playing for anything. I think they went 8-8 the year he threw for over 5000 yds
we were actually gonna give it to him
NO had the ball on the last play of the game and we were playing prevent defense. we only rushed 3 and everyone else was in way deep coverage. If he threw it over the middle of the field he would easily have gotten it but he went for the endzone and it got batted down
And if we take down ATL we could help that.

Will Houston's running game be harder than the vaunted, and much over-hyped LaGarrette Blount?
I believe he was blunted today by our D-line of misfits and fill-ins (Keiser, Kearse, Neblett, Applewhite, McClain – they all put in good work), only gaining 19 yds on 11 rushes.
Everybody thought he was gonna run all over us.
Not.
Some of those misfits and fill-ins are starting to look like they might be quality guys
Sure, I don’t want our starting DEs to be Keiser and Applewhite, but from what I’ve seen they look like they’re both qualty rotational guys. Neblett is also growing on me. I remember seeing an article last year about Neblett deserving more playing time. At the beginning of the season he looked useless, but the last few weeks he’s starting to show some signs of life.
I think Houston will definitely be tougher
Houston has a better O-line than Tampa. That being said our D really played well today, we’ll definitely have a chance against them
Also in Houston
They have the first tandem since double trouble with a chance for both to get 1000 yards rushing.
As the great philosopher Yoda said "Try not! Do you must!"

Our run defense shocked me…. Blount had a total of 19 yards… yes Nineteen yards (Tampa Bay had a total of 77 rushing yards mostly by Johnson)

"With the third pick of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select, Adam Morrison, Gonzaga."
You don't need to have break-away speed to succeed in the NFL.
You just need to run good routes. Jerry Rice is proof of that.
ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.
Clemson 2011 ACC Champions! Look forward to doing it again next year! :D
I see him as the perfect number two receiver
He doesn’t have break away speed, but a good route runner is able to get separation without blazing speed. Lafell has the size and (though it was unexpected before this year) the hands to be a great clutch receiver. I think yes_we_cam hit the nail on the head with the Moose comparison. I see Lafell as a very similar player.
Really liking what I see from him this year, and I’m starting to get high hopes for his future.
I agree.
We only had one 4pm(ET) game this year. The other 15 were/are 1pm(ET). This is mainly bc we were the worst team in the league last year.
I FEEL A MNF SLOT NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still trying to figure out how a crappy team ended up on MNF
Personally, I feel every playoff team gets one Monday game and then feature other up and coming teams in the league. Also, with the exception of the the SB Champs, no team should get more than one MNF game. Kinda tired of seeing the Pats, Steelers, Ravens and Cowboys on prime-time. A little change would be nice.
You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

My thoughts exactly
I’d rather see new teams every week, even if they aren’t SB contenders. I’d like to see teams like the Texans, 49ers, Bills, etc.
May get to see the Panthers on that HBO Hard Knocks show next year.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
They didn't do it this year because of the lockout.
None of the teams wanted to have to deal with a camera crew with a shortened offseason. I expect it will be back next year.
We don't need that BS drama in Carolina!!!!

As much as I love anything Panthers, I too don't like the idea of us being on an HBO show showing all the good and bad of our team
Not me.
I would love to have an inside look at how our coaches and players are in practice. We call Rivera BAMF but right now we really have nothing to base that on other than his playing time in the nfl. We have never seen how he talks to guys except a 2 second shot during games now and then.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
Lol! I'm watching the ESPN coverage.
There’s the big billboard of the Panthers vs Bucs game with the two scores and the stats for both teams. A guy is gushing over Cam Newton and his record breaking game. There’s just one problem though! Every time he meant to say Cam Newton, he accidently says “Tim Tebow.”
I’m not making this up!
ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

It happened about 3 or 4 times before they corrected him on-air. Lol

1 of the announcers called Newton "Freeman" a couple of times in the game today.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
Play 'til you hear the whistle, boys.
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY! I mean, assuming the lockout will end anytime soon...
Biyombo fo...ah who am I kidding? GO PANTHERS!
Anyone think...
Steve Smith was a bit more temperamental today?? Didn’t really like his outburst after Cam underthrew him that ball….the team was up big at that point.
Life is what you make it brothers....
I didn't mind it
He’s always temperamental when he doesn’t have a big game. Team won though so I’m sure he’s over it.
his play has dropped off
I think he’s frustrated with his own play. I don’t know why, but 30-40 yards seems more likely now. With CAM throwing, we might have five guys with 40 yards or so, instead of one guy at 150. Smitty has also had a few costly penalties in the last few games. I think he’s frustrated with himself, and he is gonna get it together pretty soon.
I say it every week, but the PI rules are out of control.
Watching the Packers/Giants game and it’s just painful. Let DBs freakin play.

Oh. My. God.
Jennings never had control. That is just utter, utter, utter, bullshit.
Honestly I’d just walk off the field if I was the Giants. What is the freakin point of playing if the refs are going to call that a TD? That’s disgraceful.

Injuries:
Wharton’s back tightened up on him.
Fua pulled his hammy.
McClain tweaked his knee.
and..Gross hurt his ankle.
Panther Pride 'till I die.
This victory is so sweet. Out of all the teams in our division its the bucs i wanna beat the most
My best friends are bucs fans and last year all I got was shit from them. Nothing like a bitch slapping in your own back yard to wipe the smile off their faces. Easy money today.

i'm back from my first game... it was AMAZING
I don’t think i’ve ever had THAT much fun at ANY kind of sports event. I sat like 3 rows away from the field of the panthers side and actually got to say hello to Jerry Richardson… (He’s tall as hell i wasn’t expecting it) Waved to some of the players and others waved back. I saw Fua get carted off the field during warm ups ( i think he rolled his ankle) but honestly the team did great with out him so i’m not sure what to think anymore. The atmosphere for the Bucs stadium was pretty tense i had about 30 panthers fans all around me and i was NOT expecting that at all. (i didn’t even know that Tampa had 30 Carolina fans!) But yeah about the game we came to play today. that’s how you win games. If the defense had been playing like that all year we could be 10-2. By the 2nd half it seemed like the panthers fans in the stadium were louder then all the Bucs fans! and when we scored that last TD everyone started to leave and all the Panthers fans started cheering for the panthers and it got pretty loud i’m not gonna lie. Ok now i’m just kinda rambling but i just want you guys to know that i had a fun time at my first game and i’m definitively going to want to go to many many more games. Great overall game with the Team Congrats to Cam and lets carry that momentum into next week!

And it sounds like you had great seats.
One of the players wrote on Twitter (I think it was CJ) that the stadium was surprisingly deep in Panthers fans.

It elevated his game to the next lvl so hopefully they keep it that way for next week.

Speaking of Baker.........
I think it’s time to find his replacement after this season. I am so tired of 30 yard punts.

What are everybody's thoughts on the playcalling?
I love Chud’s creativity on thing like LA’s pass and Stewart being in at FB for one play that I saw. Also, 39 runs to 22 passes. 3:2 run-pass ratio the past two weeks.
I like those numbers, yet I want to see a more even 1:1 ratio, if only to pat Cam's passing stats.

Thing is, 14 of the 39 carries were Cam. Don’t care for him running the ball that much.

Me either.
I don’t mind the running so much in the open field but in the redzone it is too dangerous.

Aaaaaaaaaaand the refs bail the fucking Packers out AGAIN.

That was ticky tack
They’ve been my secondary teams since I was little (mom from Wisconsin, life-long cheesehead. It rubs off). But I hate seeing teams get favorable treatment like they have.
The word you're looking for is bullshit.
That’s the officials having money on the Packers to win.

The Giants need to throw to Cruz more.
That guy is a play maker. Also throw to Ballard more. (I have them both in fantasy leagues)

All I can say is I love this game...
Because I have Greg Jennings and Victor Cruz.
(And Arian Foster, and Ryan Matthews, and the Ravens D) = D
hey guys
i’ll end up losing this week, but i wanted to ask for FF help
i have Meachem and Moore (N.O. WRs), and have Mike Thomas (Jax WR) benched. should i put M Thomas in for R Meachem?
better get 'em now!
I raded Fitz for D. Murray
It has worked out great.

Can we please stop wearing these DINKY white jerseys?
To my memory, we’ve worn black once and blue once, and white every other time.
We've worn blue twice
But I agree with you. I want to see the black ones more. And I wouldn’t complain if we underwent a uniform change. They could use a little spicin’ up.
I'm cool with the uniforms, but I wouldn't say no to a makeover
And we’re only allowed to where the blue ones twice a year.

Yeah. If we don't change our uniforms
We might as well make the Blue ones our primary so we don’t wear the white so much. We’re only wearing black 3 times tops this year anyway.
I think Cam picked an appropriate TD celebration

Best All Around Game!
I have to say this was the best Team Effort of the season! It’s good to see the progress! (This is my first CSR post) Proud to be a part of the Panther family!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
I’ve been reading the post for a long time and decided to jump in!! I have been a huge Panther fan since their inception. I even wrote a poem when they went to GB for the NFC championship. I have a signed and dated copy by Jerry Richardson & he has a framed copy in his office! WSOC featured me at their send-off party to read it on air. Awesome experience!!
great day to be a panther

What a game, great win for the team
division opponent, and back to back wins on the road. Held the lead from the first possession and kept pressing. Defense held up for the most part. I think Chud called an outstanding game.
Lafell took advantage of his opportunity hauling in 3 receptions for 64 yds. at some opportune moments. I love how he just has a knack for being there when needed the most.
Keiser continues to show why the coaching staff showed confidence in him. I think he’ll add some solid depth to an already formidable DE rotation going forward.
Cam had a very solid game and continues his undefeated streak when committing no turnovers. 258 total yards and 4 TDs and a 106.1 QBR.
DeAngelo on Cam:
“You get the ball in your best playmaker’s hands,” Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams said. “And fortunately for us, our playmaker touches the ball every play.”
Overall, great win. There are many positives to take from this game. This was the kind of win they can build on and use toward having a strong finish to the season. Two down, 4 to go. Detroit won their last 4 games last season and were able to carry that momentum over to this season and win their first 5 games. I’d love to see us follow a similar path.

Best part about LaFell
He would have had a TD and another 20 yards or so had Cam not overthrown him.
-Cam now leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns, at any position.
