Panthers Run Past Bucs 38-19 as Newton Breaks Rushing Record

TAMPA, FL - DECEMBER 4: Quarterback Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers rushes upfield against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers December 4, 2011 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

There was plenty to be happy about for Panther fans in this one. But it all starts with rookie QB Cam newton and his record setting day. Newton was deadly in the red zone as he kept it simply, scoring three touchdowns on the ground and throwing for a fourth. Truly a day for the rookie to celebrate little as the Panthers string two in a row.

I would be remiss to not mention the defense and the fact they held the Bucs to FGs on 4 drives and and more importantly held LeGarette Blount to 19 yards on 11 carries. DE Charles Johnson had a big day with a sack, 3 tackles for a loss, a pass defensed and a QB hurry. The defensive line played pretty good as a whole keeping pressure on back-up QB Josh Johnson.

This is now a post-game open thread!

Man- that was painful

Congratulations Panthers fans. Well played- the better team took it today. We have officially supplanted y’all as worst in the division- hurts to say it, but the proof was out there on the field today.

We shall see

Right now, I think 5-11 is the best we can hope for this year- and 4-12 is looking more and more realistic.

I felt this would be a signature game for Cam Newton and I was right. 4 TDs on the day. I cant wait for next week. I’ll be there live next week when Cam Newton sets yet another record, most total TDs accounted for by a rookie. Peyton Manning set it in 1999 with 26 total TDs. With Cam’s 4 TD game, he tied that record today. Next Cam Newton TD sets a new record.

I watched the Denver game and tebow kept them in it for his defense and special teams to win it, that defense gave up 32 points. Tebow is 6-1 newton is 4-8 despite all of newtons stats who are you covering? If newton was 8-4 he’d be named ROY the year by now. No one really said newton couldn’t make it the way they said tebow couldn’t with the offense he ran in college and that atrocious throwing motion newton will have his day just be patient.

I think some of us are sick of people acting like he doesn't do crap.

Tebow plays a part on that team, a pretty dang important one too. It doesn’t matter how ugly his stats are, we should know this better than anyone that a QB doesn’t have to be conventional to have success. You can’t argue the results, Tebow is 6-1 and has the Broncos tied with the Raiders for the division lead after starting 1-4. And the vaunted defense that has been winning Tebow’s games for him allowed 30 points today.

Yes I'm a dude.

Tebow completed over 60% of his passes for over 200 yards and 2 TDs with no turnovers. He has 13 total TDs to just 2 turnovers this year. 22 career TDs to just 4 turnovers. That’s gotta be good for something.

Dalton vs. Newton

So some people are starting to say Dalton deserves OROY over CAM (not on CSR, though). Dalton has 7 wins, CAM has 4. Today Dalton was 11 of 24 in a loss. CAM through a TD, ran for 3TDs (breaking a 35 year old record), and caught a 27 yard pass. CAM is unbelievable, and only gonna get better.

by usana_gaines on Dec 4, 2011 4:38 PM EST reply actions

Cam deserves ROTY

There are those that may argue for Dalton for ROTY in terms of wins and losses and on the context that he may be a better passer. Those people are idiots. Cam Newton is awesome when the ball is rolling.

I also think CAM is a better passer. He’s asked to make tougher throws than Dalton, and he has more pass attempts anyway, but he still has a higher QB rating and completion percentage after today’s games.

I think we could potentially beat ATL, HOU, TB, and NO. They should all be close games, with a chance to win all of them. Not saying at all that will win out, but we should be able to win 2 or 3 of these.

Something about how the record doesn’t mean anything if the team isn’t playing for anything. I think they went 8-8 the year he threw for over 5000 yds

by yes_we_cam on Dec 4, 2011 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

we were actually gonna give it to him

NO had the ball on the last play of the game and we were playing prevent defense. we only rushed 3 and everyone else was in way deep coverage. If he threw it over the middle of the field he would easily have gotten it but he went for the endzone and it got batted down

Will Houston's running game be harder than the vaunted, and much over-hyped LaGarrette Blount?

I believe he was blunted today by our D-line of misfits and fill-ins (Keiser, Kearse, Neblett, Applewhite, McClain – they all put in good work), only gaining 19 yds on 11 rushes.

Everybody thought he was gonna run all over us.

Not.

by bigdavis on Dec 4, 2011 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Some of those misfits and fill-ins are starting to look like they might be quality guys

Sure, I don’t want our starting DEs to be Keiser and Applewhite, but from what I’ve seen they look like they’re both qualty rotational guys. Neblett is also growing on me. I remember seeing an article last year about Neblett deserving more playing time. At the beginning of the season he looked useless, but the last few weeks he’s starting to show some signs of life.

I think Houston will definitely be tougher

Houston has a better O-line than Tampa. That being said our D really played well today, we’ll definitely have a chance against them

by jcbouche on Dec 4, 2011 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Also in Houston

They have the first tandem since double trouble with a chance for both to get 1000 yards rushing.

It only depends on the stats. A QB gets the same points for receiving as a WR or a TE.

Great football by both sides of the ball

Our run defense shocked me…. Blount had a total of 19 yards… yes Nineteen yards (Tampa Bay had a total of 77 rushing yards mostly by Johnson)

Cam put the team on his back doe (except for the blow throw to Smitty). LaFell was clutch as usual. I liked all the trick plays we were doing

I know people hate talking about the draft but damn our secondary isn’t looking to shabby lately (Besides Gamble). I’ve been saying draft Zach Brown but maybe we need to go DB

by Spartanburg Fan on Dec 4, 2011 5:20 PM EST reply actions

I like Lafell, but I just feel like he doesn’t have the breakaway speed necessary to be a consistent starter in the NFL.

by yes_we_cam on Dec 4, 2011 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

You don't need to have break-away speed to succeed in the NFL.

You just need to run good routes. Jerry Rice is proof of that.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

by Revshawn on Dec 4, 2011 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I see him as the perfect number two receiver

He doesn’t have break away speed, but a good route runner is able to get separation without blazing speed. Lafell has the size and (though it was unexpected before this year) the hands to be a great clutch receiver. I think yes_we_cam hit the nail on the head with the Moose comparison. I see Lafell as a very similar player.

Really liking what I see from him this year, and I’m starting to get high hopes for his future.

by ppfcpp on Dec 4, 2011 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

We only had one 4pm(ET) game this year. The other 15 were/are 1pm(ET). This is mainly bc we were the worst team in the league last year.

by yes_we_cam on Dec 4, 2011 5:22 PM EST reply actions

I'm still trying to figure out how a crappy team ended up on MNF

Personally, I feel every playoff team gets one Monday game and then feature other up and coming teams in the league. Also, with the exception of the the SB Champs, no team should get more than one MNF game. Kinda tired of seeing the Pats, Steelers, Ravens and Cowboys on prime-time. A little change would be nice.

You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

by Disciple of Carolina on Dec 4, 2011 7:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

his play has dropped off

I think he’s frustrated with his own play. I don’t know why, but 30-40 yards seems more likely now. With CAM throwing, we might have five guys with 40 yards or so, instead of one guy at 150. Smitty has also had a few costly penalties in the last few games. I think he’s frustrated with himself, and he is gonna get it together pretty soon.

i'm back from my first game... it was AMAZING

I don’t think i’ve ever had THAT much fun at ANY kind of sports event. I sat like 3 rows away from the field of the panthers side and actually got to say hello to Jerry Richardson… (He’s tall as hell i wasn’t expecting it) Waved to some of the players and others waved back. I saw Fua get carted off the field during warm ups ( i think he rolled his ankle) but honestly the team did great with out him so i’m not sure what to think anymore. The atmosphere for the Bucs stadium was pretty tense i had about 30 panthers fans all around me and i was NOT expecting that at all. (i didn’t even know that Tampa had 30 Carolina fans!) But yeah about the game we came to play today. that’s how you win games. If the defense had been playing like that all year we could be 10-2. By the 2nd half it seemed like the panthers fans in the stadium were louder then all the Bucs fans! and when we scored that last TD everyone started to leave and all the Panthers fans started cheering for the panthers and it got pretty loud i’m not gonna lie. Ok now i’m just kinda rambling but i just want you guys to know that i had a fun time at my first game and i’m definitively going to want to go to many many more games. Great overall game with the Team Congrats to Cam and lets carry that momentum into next week!

I’ve been reading the post for a long time and decided to jump in!! I have been a huge Panther fan since their inception. I even wrote a poem when they went to GB for the NFC championship. I have a signed and dated copy by Jerry Richardson & he has a framed copy in his office! WSOC featured me at their send-off party to read it on air. Awesome experience!!

What a game, great win for the team

division opponent, and back to back wins on the road. Held the lead from the first possession and kept pressing. Defense held up for the most part. I think Chud called an outstanding game.

Lafell took advantage of his opportunity hauling in 3 receptions for 64 yds. at some opportune moments. I love how he just has a knack for being there when needed the most.

Keiser continues to show why the coaching staff showed confidence in him. I think he’ll add some solid depth to an already formidable DE rotation going forward.

Cam had a very solid game and continues his undefeated streak when committing no turnovers. 258 total yards and 4 TDs and a 106.1 QBR.

DeAngelo on Cam:

“You get the ball in your best playmaker’s hands,” Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams said. “And fortunately for us, our playmaker touches the ball every play.”

Overall, great win. There are many positives to take from this game. This was the kind of win they can build on and use toward having a strong finish to the season. Two down, 4 to go. Detroit won their last 4 games last season and were able to carry that momentum over to this season and win their first 5 games. I’d love to see us follow a similar path.

Best part about LaFell

He would have had a TD and another 20 yards or so had Cam not overthrown him.

Add in that and his rushing on third down for 1st down stats and Cam Newton is the best RB in the NFL lol

That was awsome!

Went to my second panthers game ever yesterday. Had great seats behind the panthers sideline, just the second row up, sat by a bunch of panther fans, the panthers played awsome, got to high five Cam when he came runnin by the wall after the game. Lol I sound like a 13 year old girl at a justin bieber concert.
