Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Here, I was behind Jon from Day One," said Connor, a third-round pick in 2008. "It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out and maybe getting into a situation where they want me to be the guy. I’m kind of excited about it. It’s exciting to see how it shakes out. Obviously, I’d love to stay here. I like it here and I think this team’s going to be really good next year. It’s something I want to be a part of."

Good for him

I’m glad we have Connor and I’m really glad that the environment in Carolina is one that draws people here but if he wants a lot of money to be re-signed I think they should let him go. I also feel like despite wanting to be apart of the big stuff next year that Dan would relish the opportunity to start somewhere and there are several teams that could use a legit 4-3 MLB

Good Luck

He’s been a very vauable back up. I think somebody will sign him to start for them. But not for big money.

I wish him the best..he's a classy guy that deserves to start somewhere..

Honestly, I'm a little worried...

I’d be very happy for him if he ended up with a starting role somewhere, which he’s certainly talented enough to land. At the same time, the depth that we do have has been tested by injuries (ranging from minor to serious), and there’s a noticeable talent dropoff once you get past the regular starters, Connor, and Senn. Let’s be honest, the odds against Davis returning to full form and NOT tearing his ACL yet again are not in his favor (not impossible for him to remain healthy, but it would be irresponsible to expect he’d manage to not re-injure himself).

Anyway, Connor is a classy guy; like I said, I’d be happy for him if he could land a starting role somewhere. I just hope that the F.O. makes sure that they have enough talented depth to pick up the slack in case of injuries.

Yep. I'm a female who religiously follows a football blog.

I definitely would not be against using a mid round draft pick on a MLB if he leaves. You point about injuries is the number 1 concern. Definitely need quality depth at that position.

yeah if we let him go we may need to address MLB in the draft or sign a solid back up. I love Dan but he will cost more then he is worth to us now. He isn’t a starter on this team but he is a very good back up. Somewhere else..like Philly perhaps he will be worth the money to start. I wish him luck in his career but i think chances of him being a Panther next year is less than 1%. Only way he returns is if no team shows interest in giving him a starting role..which i dont see happening

It definately puts us on the spot if our linebackers go down.

With Davis constantly on and off IR and Dan Connor off the roster completely, our greatest strength on the depth chart could quickly disappear. On the flip side of the coin if we go DT in the draft and we get a good one, the linebackers don’t become as significant a position for our Panthers. We could always try to grab up a linebacker in the middle rounds of the draft, they have a pretty good success ratio at the next level.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

I have a bias towards Connor 'cos frankly I like to see white players on my team.

That said he’s a step too slow to play MLB in a 4-3 I think.

He’s also not great in coverage, which kind of takes him out of the running for SLB ‘cos he can’t cover a TE. I think that injury sapped some of his athleticism relegating him to a backup role OR a ‘Thumper’ in a 3-4 (the other ILB).

If I’m in the Front Office I offer him a contract fitting of a backup and wish him well if he decides to leave for a starting role elsewhere.

I would love to see a member of my tribe playing well for the Panthers

Is that racist or is it simply me wanting to see someone from my ethnicity succeed at a very high level?

I also want the best player possible playing the position.

The two thoughts aren’t mutually exclusive.

(I don’t know if this was the thought pattern of Oldham or not, but in my opinion, wanting someone from your own race/tribe/family/culture to succeed is not racist).

Exactly, I didn't think it was that difficult to get.

I like Connor don't love him

One time at training camp (band Camp…joke I know) I saw Beason. I asked Connor if Beason was coming out to sign. He said he didn’t know. Wasn’t agitated. Beason didn’t but Dan waa cool about it Tangent…there has been slavery in England, Ireland, Africa pre atlantic slave trade, and eastern Europe. Haven’t you ever seen Sparticus? (sarcasm font). But seriously it’s ignorant to think Americans invented slavery. Some slaves were sent to South America to harvest sugar cane etc…

#PanthersMafia

by JohnnyMac080 on Dec 30, 2011 12:38 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Slavery goes way back further than what most people realize. There were slaves in Ancient Egypt, Sumeria, and Assyria; just to name a few.

In fact, Slavery was even mentioned in the Code of Hammurabi as an established institution in c. 1760 BC, so it’s been around for quite some time.

Does that make it right? Of course not…but let’s not be ignorant and say that “Americans invented it.”

(JonnyMac…I’m not saying you made that statement. I’m basically expanding on your point.)

Race does matter.

Each race has their own characteristics which will affect their ability as athletes. Black people can run faster than whites. Asians are naturally smaller. All these things will affect how people play.
History has a role in this too. Black QBs are all characterised as mobile ones because historically that is what they have been rather than pocket passers. White receivers are always called “Wes Welker type” receivers because recently he has been the most successful one. Anyone who says that race never comes into their consideration when looking at football players is a liar. You never think of a white receiver as a Randy Moss type guy who can outrun and out- jump anyone. You don’t see white NFL cornerbacks because they aren’t fast enough.
If this view makes me racist then I guess I am one. All races are different. Why can’t we just accept that.
I’m in no way saying one race should be picked over another. Whoever is the better player should play no matter if they are black or white or range from drinking too much Sunny D.

It’s just cool to see someone break the mold. The majority of players in the NFL are black, so it’s refreshing to see people of other ethnicities (not just white) having success. Just like it’s nice to see more African Americans making it in professional baseball, a sport dominated by Whites and Latinos.

Also, I don’t know why you have a desire to see more white people. The QB position is dominated by whites…which you see all the time. I don’t have a desire to see Indians in the NFL because I know while some of us have good speed, we don’t have the height or build to last. That’s why we do IT.

I have felt like Connor has been a real blessing this year...

However, he is slow, poor in coverage, and gets injured quite often. I don’t see any way we bring him back…I would look mid-to-late round and draft a replacement or perhaps through free-agency. On a side note, I couldn’t have been more disappointed in the play of Omar Gaither. I thought he was stout enough to play MLB and quick enough to play OLB…Wrong, he was out classed every time he stepped on the field. We may need to draft 2 LB’s come draft day an ILB and an OLB, for depth if nothing else…

I don't think our "Just in Case"

Needs to cost as much as Connor well though. I like the guy and I think he’s a good player and great teammate but people seem to be giving him a pretty big pass. He hasn’t looked great this season (could be new scheme but Anderson & Senn eventually had great games with the same challenges) & he is kind of injury prone himself. I hope he gets a job somewhere else & thrives; he’s a classy guy.

Something to look forward to then! On that subject I can’t wait to see how RR drafts over a couple of years, I think he has a great eye for talent. Finding a MLB would be childs play for him. I really like James-Michael Johnson SR out of Nevada as a later round pick up. He has a good head on his shoulders, and was a tackling machine this year with 95 tackles. He racked up 13 total tackles against a ranked Southern Miss team and added a sack in their bowl game this year. Just spit-balling though!

This has the feeling of another Dan Morgan vs Will Witherspoon scenario

No doubt Connor’s going to want to start, and get paid as a starter. Which just isn’t happening with a healthy Jon Beason.

Like Morgan we have to decide between the better but potentially injury prone LB and the lesser but stable LB. Few would say to keep Connor over Beason (myself incuded), but we got screwed keeping Morgan.

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

by southtunnel on Dec 30, 2011 10:15 AM EST reply actions

Beason doesn't have near the injury problems Morgan had.

Also, if Morgan stayed healthy or we would have kept WW, we wouldn’t have got Beason at all.

Yeah, this wasn't very surprising. But Part of me hoped he would come back next year.

However, with our current cap ordeal, It wasn’t feasible for us to pay him starters money, or anything close to it.
