Pro Football Focus Agrees: Chris Gamble was Snubbed
As you probably already know by now, Panthers CB Chris Gamble was not selected to the Pro Bowl, despite having a Pro Bowl caliber season (and one of his better seasons as a Panther). In fact, he wasn't even selected to be an alternate. Yeah, you read that right: Gamble isn't even an alternate.
If anyone figures out why Gamble isn't even mentioned as one of the alternates (much less a starter) for the Pro Bowl, please let me know so I can understand it too.
If you're like me and are shaking your head in disgust at Gamble's snubbing, then you can take comfort in the fact that the guys at Pro Football Focus also believe that Gamble should represent the NFC in the Pro Bowl.
The following is a snippet from their article about players who shouldn't have made the Pro Bowl:
Charles Woodson, CB, Green Bay Packers and Charles Tillman, CB, Chicago Bears
PFF Rating: -2.2 (Woodson) and +4.4 (Tillman)
PFF Conference Ranking: 18th and 8th
Analysis: Woodson is a lot of things to the Green Bay Packers, but he’s not even their top cover corner. He’s now just the kind of difference maker that can be a liability in coverage, as evidenced by the nine penalties given up along with the 566 yards. Tillman is up at the 841 yard mark on the season and while he’s had some great moments (notably the second encounter with Detroit) he hasn’t consistently dominated the opposition as many would have you believe. Instead guys like Brent Grimes and Chris Gamble have made plays and allowed less than 45% of balls thrown their way to be complete. There really isn’t a comparison.
Key Fact: Chris Gamble has allowed just 284 yards all year.
See, the guys at PFF get it...why can't anyone else?
Oh well, maybe next year Gamble will finally get some of the recognition he deserves.
What do you think Panthers fans? Do Charles Woodson and Charles Tillman deserve to be in the Pro Bowl over Chris Gamble? Let's hear it...

Packers and Bears hold more clout. Woodson is a future HOF. Doesn’t make it any more right that Gamble was snubbed but it really comes as no surprise. When we make a strong playoff run next year i am sure we end up having more then two pro bowlers and two alternates.

I wouldn't have thought Woodson's numbers would be that much worse than Gamble
Woodson is a play maker for sure but a liability too…interesting. To see Tillman giving up over 800 yards at the Bears #1 CB and then comparing to Gamble’s 280…it makes the snub that larger!
I have the reason why Gamble didn't make it BW
A) He plays for a small market team
B) That small market team has a losing record
C) Practically everyone outside the Carolinas dismisses the Panthers franchise
and finally…
D) If Tebow was getting more press than Newton, when Cam was breaking records and lighting the football world on fire did you really think anyone else on the Panthers roster would garner much attention?
The only way he gets a Pro Bowl nod is if the Panthers are playoff bound and even then he would probably be an alternate.

Agree
But, would add that if either Gamble or Rivera were both loud and obnoxious (like Jabba the Ryan), some attention would be brought this way. Must also add; wouldn’t change the quiet demeanor with the attitude and chip on the shoulder. Why I became a fan in the first place…

I was saying the same thing
Revis gets so hyped cause Rex Ryan won’t shut up about him and the national media feels the need to display every word he says
Oh I know
He’s the best CB in the NFL. But we hear about him so much because he’s on the Jets and Rex Ryan is his head coach.

whats most impressive about gamble
Is his bounce back from a disappointing year to be dominant. Without him how bad would our secondary be? People were calling him ‘over the hill’ and ‘well past his best’, him and anderson have held this defence together and dragged it kicking and screaming through games

I think the voting process is whacked-- 1/3 fans, 1/3 players, 1/3 coaches
Each of these groups is biased for their favorite team or fellow players. The fan vote is a farce, because the truly knowledgeable are dwarfed by the “I’ve heard of him, I think” votes.
Then there are the fans who vote 1,000 times for their favorite player, without even thinking about other teams. It’s a farce, really. But let them have their folly bowl; I mean, they did get two players right (/jk)
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
I'm curious what the coaches votes were
It seems like they game plan to avoid Gamble so you’d think he’d have gotten more votes from them. The players… the majority are probably like fans. who they played against and what they hear on sportscenter.

I think they vote for who they want to go hang out with in Hawaii.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
Only 12 teams play against Gamble in this or any year.
That means 20 know hardly a thing about him, or watch any film on him.
Everybody’s heard of Charles Woodson, who’s built enough of a rep for a long time, that his history and name recognition outweigh the fact that he’s a net liability to his team now. But because Aaron Rodgers, and the Pack offense, continue to bail out a very weak defense, it gets overlooked.
The exposure in prime time, in so many playoff games, is what makes voters remember a player in the Pro Bowl voting. It’s the fact, and we shouldn’t get bent out of shape about it.
It's complete bullsheet
I know we are all supposed to accept that players from a small market team won’t get acknowledged as much as big market players, but in this day and age of instant technology it’s complete bullshit. The NFL really sucks when it comes to the Pro Bowl. Allowing it to only be a popularity contest is just silly.
Tramon Williams is better than Woodson, and he is only an alternate. It just really sucks for Gamble.
Welcome to the Cam Cave
Same reason Rashean Mathis never made in Jacksonville. The fans vote for large market players. and the players are probably almost as bad at making their picks as the fans are…they don’t have time to watch everyone play. This makes the coaches’ vote only 1/3 of the equation, and they too do not have time to see everyone play. It really should be a writer’s vote like the all pro team. Its gettting to be less and less of an honor and more of a popularity contest.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
+1
Imagine if Aeneas Williams had played on the Cowboys back in the day. The guy would have the record for Pro Bowls for a CB. Same goes for Gamble, he would’ve been a pro bowler at least 4 times already.
Welcome to the Cam Cave
Agreed
Williams was a great player. Of course, the biggest snub every year is London Fletcher. He leads the league in tackles, and doesn’t get in. If Gamble had 7 interceptions and didn’t get in, that would be a lot worse. Of course, that did happen before, when he and Ken Lucas had 7 INTs a piece and neither one got in.

Woodson deserves to go to the Pro Bowl
If you wanna look at stats to compare Woodson to Gamble, use all the stats. Gamble played great and deserves to be in the Pro Bowl, but Woodson deserves to be there, too. Woodson leads the league in interceptions with 7, compared to Gamble’s 3. 24 PD to 15, 64 tackles to 40 for Gamble, 2 sacks to none for Gamble and 1 TD. Gamble had a great year, but you can’t take away what Woodson has done. Additionally, it is a team game. When we give up 2nd half leads because our secondary is getting burned, Gamble gets part of the blame even though he may have blanketed his man the whole game. For example, when you think of the Arizona game, do you remember Gamble doing anything? If he had Fitzgerald locked down, and the ball wasn’t thrown that way, there’s nothing to remember. But when we give up 4 TD passes to Matt Ryan, people remember, even though Gamble had Roddy White locked down and Julio Jones was making plays on Butler.
And then you say Woodson gave up twice as many yards as Gamble, but that’s because the CB opposite Gamble sucked half the time, and it was smarter to go that way, and because the Packers have always had the lead in the 2nd half, so teams are always throwing on them. Lastly, how many of the yards given up by Woodson were from the CAM to Smitty combo? Can’t blame Woodson for getting CAM’d…lots of people have been getting CAM’d all year.
Woodson is not as deserving as his own teammate Tramon Williams.
He has all of those PD’s and INT’s because most QB’s avoid throwing towards Williams, it’s just smarter to throw at Woodson.
Besides, most of us are arguing against Tillman being in the Pro Bowl.
Welcome to the Cam Cave
Not buying the argument
I think choosing to throw at Woodson has proven to be a bad idea, as evidenced by his 7 interceptions and his PDs. I think this one argument made by PFF is given too much credit. How many times was Woodson targeted compared to Gamble and Williams. I agree that Williams is a solid CB, and may be better than Woodson at times, but I think trying to deny Woodson deserves the Pro Bowl doesn’t make sense. Look at other positions…if you are an icon and lead the league in rushing yards, sacks, or receiving TDs, you deserve to get in based on your stats and your reputation.
As for Tillman…well I don’t know much about him, but I can’t find him on the interceptions leaders list.
Either way, we all agree Gamble should be in.

I can agree with that...
but I think teams who did choose to throw at Woodson weren’t making good decisions half the time. But when they make a bad decision, and Woodson gets a pick, it looks better for Woodson than when a QB decides to throw it away instead of throwing to Gamble direction. Gamble deserves to be in, but I just don’t think Woodson is the guy who should be replaced. I agree that Gamble over Tillman is a good choice.

Smh at the snub, he isn't the only 1 though.
Just surprising how only surrendering 23 catches on 55 targets(41.8%). 12.3 yards per reception, 70 yards after catch( which is lowest in the league). 47.8 passer rating allowed against him, which is 2nd behind Revis. Oh yeah as stated only allowing 284 yards on the year doesn’t get a vote of being an alternate is horrible.
by adam carter on Dec 28, 2011 11:44 AM EST via mobile reply actions
yea
Tillman let up somewhere around 850 yards this year. It’s ridiculous that he got in over Gamble, and even worse that he’s not at least an alternate

He isn't bad against the run, he's just not in the game.
To say that he is bad against the run when he performs just fine against it is to just go along with what some “experts” are saying about him without examining the evidence. This is the same thing that used to be said about CJ and that’s why he was only a situational player under Fox, yet all the evidence showed that he was a badass waiting to happen.

I wish they would have snubbed Newton and Kalil also.
While they certainly deserve the honors of it, I don’t want to risj any of our players getting injured over a meaningless game. They should just give the ones that deserve it a free trip to Hawaii without any risks.

Well, as long as he continues to play this well next year and helps this defense and team get a shot at the SB, I think Gamble could care less about going to the Pro Bowl.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
Meh, we saw this coming a mile away...
I’m more interested to see him continue to produce at this level going forward, and continue to be a calming presence in the secondary more than anything; Gamble is kind of like London Fletcher, in that on the whole he’s been a consistently good defensive player for most of his career (outside of about 1 1/2 seasons, with a significant gap inbetween them), but he probably won’t get that kind of recognition outside of the fanbase until we get closer to the end of his career and people start talking him up as one of the most underrated CBs in the NFL.
Besides, we’re making 2002-esque leaps in progress, so if history tells us anything it’s that next year may be a great one for us :)

Hey guys
Been a while since I’ve made an appearance on the sight. Its good to be back. Anyway, was just wondering but i thought the pro bowl is a fans choice. I know players and coaches get to vote as well but i remember a couple years ago the players said they voted for people they heard were good, not really paying attention to who had a really good year. Anyway as a small market team i can’t say i’m surprised our players didn’t make it. Newton was robbed, Gamble should have at least been an alternate, and James anderson should of even deserved some recognition. He was outstanding for our defense especially after we lost beacon and davis. However, the only way to remedy the situation is to have the team start winning again so our players get attention they deserve. Besides Gamble might make the all pro team. Which is even more important. For a corner to shut down number one receivers despite the lack of pressure on the QB is worthy of that at least. Hope you all have been well and Glad that our panthers are finally playing like they should.
Not surprised - Gamble isn't flashy enough
He’s just a damn good shutdown corner. People will ignore guys getting burned a little more often if it means they had some big INTs.
Anderson and Newton weren't robbed
They are both playing extremely well, and while Newton would be a shoe in if we played in the AFC, the NFC is loaded at QB right now. Brees and Rodgers have been lights out, and are deserving of 1 and 2. After that, there are 4 QBs who are neck in neck. Newton, Romo, Manning, and Stafford.
I think Stafford has a slight edge, then Newton, then Romo and Manning, but the difference is small, and I’m not going to argue with any of those guys at selection 3.
Anderson has played great, but again, the LBs in the NFC are beasts this season.
Again, not a selection I’m going to argue a ton.
Gamble was snubbed. He’s the best CB in the NFC hands down. His isn’t a competition for the 3rd spot behind Brees and Rodgers.
This one is a travesty.
The main problem with Anderson, is the emphasis on 3-4 LB
Linebackers in the 4-3 scheme don’t get as much of a chance to shine (especially the OLBs) as guys in a 3-4 system. Out of the ten LB chosen, only Von Miller, Urlacher and Briggs play in a 4-3 system. There’s a much larger emphasis put on sacks than on coverage abilities when it comes to voting. That’s always going to favor 3-4 guys or guys like Von Miller who blitz a lot.
Anderson has probably put up a Pro-bowl caliber season, but his numbers just don’t match up with the guys who were picked because of his role.
As far as Newton goes, I think he was a better choice than Eli, but Stafford is probably the guy who really deserved the third spot.
I'm glad anderson didn't make the pro bowl
I know we already paid him. But imagine what kinda money he might want if he started making the pro bowl. I honestly only care if Kalil, Smith, or Newton make the probowl since they do a very eye popping job….and they’re getting paid for it
Anderson does not seem to be that type of guy or anyone on this team really for that matter.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
Stat lines
On the page where you vote they should show 3 relevant stats (by position) under each player’s name/face. It would be harder to robo-vote by name recognition if you could see the guy next to him had better stats in every category.
examples:
for RBs it should show TDs, total combined yards and YPA
for CBs it should show INTs, total yards allowed and either completed pass percentage or QBR against.
We can argue what stats they should show for each position, these are just my first suggestions, but what does everyone think? Would this help even it out?
I think it's a good idea, and would at least make for a good sociology experiment.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
They could use the stats like that.
Maybe like you said include more stats than just the ones you listed, and don’t even put a name beside the stats and let everyone vote like that. Then nobody would know what player they are voting for and the real winners would go.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
I like the anonymous voting, but...
I don’t think stats should be the sole factor when determining who to recognize for their performance. Take sacks for instance. We all judge DEs by the number of sacks they get, but in reality, a sack is simply a Tackle for loss (TFL) on a QB. Why not reward TFLs as much as sacks? If DE (A) has 15 sacks, and DE (B) has 30 TFL, who had the better season?
When it comes to DBs, which stat is more important, the shutdown or the INT? Personally, I think shutdown ability trumps INTs, but INTs and PDs combined shouldn’t be discounted either. If CB (A) has only allowed 40% rec, and CB (B) has 7 INTs and 12 PDs, which one is better?
I think players should be voted in based on 3 factors: 1) Stats, 2) Impact at their position on their team, and 3) Peer/Coach recognition. In that order.
By impact I mean a player may have a less than dominant statistical year, but they find ways to help their team win games by making big plays or motivating players around them to excell. Nobody does this better than Ray Lewis. Even in a statistical down year, noone can deny the impact he has on his team.
