So Who Does Cam Newton Compare To? Try Manning AND Walker...Combined

CHARLOTTE, NC - DECEMBER 24: Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers runs for a 49 yard touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Bank of America Stadium on December 24, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina (Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

Football Outsiders decided to try and do a historical comparison for Cam Newton to see which current or former player he most compares too. What they soon found out is they had no comparison when trying to factor in his running ability and instead had to look at that separately. So they started with using his passing stats only and here's the top 3 comparisons:

1 - Peyton Manning

2 - Bernie Kosar

3 - Daunte Culpepper

I'm not surprised of those comparisons at all given Newton just broke Manning's rookie passing record. I'm a little surprised that he compared to Culpepper only because I would have thought the comparison would have been in his ability to run the ball. Now when they tried to include his running ability Newton essentially broke the calculation. The obvious comparison's are Michael Vick and Randall Cunningham, who along with Bobby Douglas are the only QBs to rush for more than 700 yards in a season. (Tebow can join the club with 56 more yards)

Yet none of these QBs can match Newton's passing performance so instead they decided to compare him purely as a rusher to get a comparison with the top 3 being:

1- Marion Barber

2 - Herschel Walker

3 - Maurice Jones-Drew

Wow, what a group of runners from the legendary Herschel Walker to MJD. If anyone doubts this comparison simply watch Newton's 49 yard TD run against the Bucs and I'm sure you will change your mind.

Hat tip to JDeLong42 for being the first to post this on CSR as a fanshot!

And still after all the broken records, close games, and awesome plays

The Panthers are still getting snubbed by ESPN. The kid is a Beast and a once in a lifetime talent that has exploded onto the NFL seen but all he gets are little snippets every once in a while about a great play making the top ten of the week. They don’t mention the records, the wins, the celebration, Nothing. But they can find at least 10 minutes a day to talk about Tim Tebow, or Tony Homo’s hurt hand. I’m am so sick of sportscenter for not recognizing a superstar in the making.

give it time, come March it'll be all over the place.

People simply don’t talk about non-playoff contenders when the playoff picture is on the cusp. As of now, when they get to him, its short & sweet because there is no controversy, just a “wow.”

Already talking Kings Ransom for the Rams if they get the pick. Herschel Walker level trade. A LOT of hype for a kid who never has came up big when the lights was on. Kind of pressure would get to any player.

The funny thing is

I have seen more Cam highlights on the NFL Network than on ESPN the past couple of weeks.

You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

by Disciple of Carolina on Dec 27, 2011 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Like it or not, it's because of the following reasons:

1. The Panthers are out of the playoff hunt and that is the traditional talking topic of the season.

2. We are a small market team.

We’re just going to have to accept that right now. It comes with the territory. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of marveling after the season at the achievements Cam Newton has accomplished as a rookie. He’s a shoo-in for the ROTY award. He’s broken a rookie record that Peyton Manning held and he will probably break more next week. That will bring some hype.

Bottom line is that once the Panthers start winning more, we aren’t going to get attention. No big deal in my book. When have we ever been good when the attention is on us?

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

That's probably another big reason too.

ESPN depends on the local market to help provide the news to the major outlets. It’s sort of like the chain of command. Look at what we got. John Fox got so irritated of them that he would only give the basic answer to them in order to get them off his back. Once he got to Denver, he started opening up because they were much more professional.

I've said elsewhere, but that 49 yard TD run was just ridiculous.

I’d be impressed if that was Stewart bursting through the line, juking a safety and carrying another 8 yards into the endzone. But that was the QB. That’s not meant to happen in the NFL!

by BlackCatFan on Dec 27, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

The triple option we've now perfected, with Stew and Williams in the backfield - play-fake to one, read option to the other, is IMPOSSIBLE for a team to stop.

They can study film all they want, they can’t cover all those possibilities, without bringing up both safeties, and being open to the post route.

by bigdavis on Dec 27, 2011 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Cam runs it to perfection, and our RBs are also perfectly suited. Stewart up the middle, Cam reads the safety

and LB, Deangelo with the outside burners. IIRC, we first broke out the option against New Orleans, and scored twice?? Greg Williams will scheme up something designed to stop it. So, Chud needs to counter-scheme something new to fool them.
I love our offense.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

by Rick Bates on Dec 27, 2011 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Also worthy of note is how rediculously good Cam's fake handoff on the option is

On the frontal view I could barely tell that he took the ball away from Stewart on his 50 yard TD run last week

by ppalm on Dec 28, 2011 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

Good call. He has a top veteran's play fake ability.

The fact that it MUST be honored, with the RBs we have, helps make it a nightmare for defenses to react quickly enough. The combination of a deceiving handoff, his running speed and power, and the uncanny ability he has of making the right read, instantly, off the motion and reaction of the tackler – very few fails, and a whole lot of big gains.

by Rvdbbw on Dec 27, 2011 2:48 PM EST reply actions

I am a firm believer that every team should get at least 1 primetime game a year

With 17 MNF games, 17 SNF games, and I think 8 or 9 Thursday night games, that is over 40 Primetime games with two teams in every game, that add up to over 80 opportunities for a team to be on primetime but we have to watch pretty much the same teams week in week out. The Cowgirls(who suck), Redskins(Super Suckage), Giants(Sucktastic), Colts(words can’t describe the Ultimate Suckage), Patriots(Ok pretty good team but who cares, they cheat), Packers(Understandable but I’m personally tired of seeing them all the time), Saints(Or should I say Aints), Jets(Cuz their coach can’t shut up), Oh Yeah and I can’t forget about the Dolphins(Who are still riding the “undefeated season 50 years ago train” but still suck) And last but certainly not least the Chargers(Epic Suckulicious levels of Suckiness). And then they wonder why most of the Probowlers come from those teams, Well DUHH!!! Thats the only teams anybody has heard about. Oh and I did forget one team and I can’t believ I did this cuz I really don’t mind the team but I absolutely LOATH their fans because they are the most arrogant Bastards in the free world and that is the (pause for dramatic emphasis) Steelers.

I agree it is probably difficult

But I checked last year and noticed that Carolina averages a Monday night game once every other year, but other teams get two or even three every year. I just don’t see this as fair. And they use the size of the fanbase as an excuse, but I’m not a genius by any means and I don’t have a college degree but It wouldn’t take Einstein to figure out that if ou put these smaller fanbase teams on TV and let the world see them, then their fanbase would grow. At least that seems to make sense in my mind, cuz if I didn’t have Sunday Ticket, I would never get to see a Panther game living in Virginia.

Unlike Tebow (among a host of other talents) Cam has a vast array of other Offensive weapons at his disposal.

He’s vastly helped by having Williams and Stewart in the backfield, to confuse defenses as to who exactly is going to run over them.

This, when coupled with Chud’s imaginative and aggressive style (compared to Fox’s conservatism), and Cam’s passing abilities (averaging over 13 yds for every completion, a monster number in today’s dink and dunk screen pass era), make it a nightmare for opposing DCs.

Now that we’ve figured out who can do what, and our OL has become more efficient in their blocking assignments, you should expect us to average 30+ points per game next year.

by bigdavis on Dec 27, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

That's with an assumption that Tebow will still be starting for Denver by then.

Even with TebowMania running wild, I’m still not 100% sold that he is Denver’s long term answer. If Kansas City beats them this Sunday, and Tebow drops a few more games during the next preseason…ruh roh.

Yep Cam is just amazing, there has never been a player so dynamic like Cam is. Incase Chud does leave do you think it will really hurt Cam’s progress under a new OC? I mean I’m sure Hurney and Rivera would ensure they get a OC that matches the same attack style we use now.. I still don’t think Chud leaves but if he does, how bad do you think it will harm Cam and the offense? Is there any other team that changed OC and still thrived the next season?

by PantherTrain on Dec 27, 2011 3:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Oh and also, Rivera said in his presser when asked about Chud that he won’t know anything until Monday? What does that mean? Is Monday the day coordinators and coaches can leave or get hired?

Because the last day of the regular season is Monday.

Teams that don’t make the playoffs can interview coaches from teams that don’t make the playoffs starting Monday.

Difference between Vick and Newton is

Vick average to struggling within the scheme of the offense and dynamic outside of the scheme offense

Newton very good to dynamic within the scheme of the offense and dynamic outside of the scheme of the offence.

stat of the week

Stats of the Week No. 9: Cam Newton has more rushing touchdowns than 21 of the league’s 32 teams.

That's just freaking ridiculous. I love it. =)

To be fair this is the NFL where on 3rd and 3 teams set up in the shotgun.

This stat doesn’t surprise me.

Has any team ever had 3 players rush for over 700 yards? Cam and Stewart only need 20+ next week to accomplish that.

2006: Dunn 1140, Vick 1039, Norwood 633

That was the last team to have three players rush for 600+ yards each. No team has ever had three players go for 700 or more.

Daunte Culpepper makes sense considering how much Cam throws down field

Culpepper had a rocket. I just hope Cam has a better long term career.

one of my favs

When you go to a restaurant on the weekends and it’s busy they start a waiting list. They start calling out names, they say “Dufresne, party of two. Dufresne, party of two.” And if no one answers they’ll say their name again. “Dufresne, party of two, Dufresne, party of two.” But then if no one answers they’ll just go right on to the next name. “Bush, party of three.” Yeah, but what happened to the Dufresnes? No one seems to give a shit. Who can eat at a time like this – people are missing. You fuckers are selfish… the Dufresnes are in someone’s trunk right now, with duct tape over their mouths. And they’re hungry! That’s a double whammy. We need help. Bush, search party of three! You can eat when you find the Dufresnes.

one of the greats. Love all his work. I was upset when i heard he OD’d but obviously not very surprised. The man had a very unique sense of humor and view of things around him. Still laugh any time i hear his stand up

Cam is a beast of a QB that can only improve from here.

I truly believe that he is a top ten QB in the NFL, right now. However, I hope that he spends some time this offseason working on his intermediate-short range accuracy; one of his only flaws.

I agree

I know that the reading defenses thing would come, considering how much he studies and his knowledge of the game already. Just needs to get his mechanics down pat to where its second nature to him

If we can solidify the D, the NFL better watch the F out!

thanks for sharing

looked into the cincy jungle, and they’re in meltdown mode about Cam. even saw one poster say the Dalton will clearly be better next season because Newton will probably be on the cover of Madden.

Lol, It's possible :^)

Yeah, I saw that even some of their posters think that Cam is better than Dalton.

No probowl for Cam

Eli got the #3 spot. Smitty and Kalil made it. Cam and Eli have same number of int, total yds basically identical, Cam has 8 more tds.

What a shame for gamble to be snub for the pro bowl

. Should have made it over Charles T, Joe Haden was snub as well in the afc.

by adam carter on Dec 27, 2011 7:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions

wronged!

That is awful, unfortunately in cases like Charles Johnson and Chris Gamble they dont make it because of stats like ints and sacks even though the fact is teams spend alot of resources and gameplanning to avoid these guys from getting such stats. Ashame it is not universally recognized and as someone said about eli over cam, not being in a huge nfl market hurts as well

by allthatremainsstillowns on Dec 27, 2011 7:31 PM EST reply actions

I actually like the Culpepper comp

Young Daunte Culpepper (prior to the injuries) was a beast, protect Cam and we’ll probably see an even better version.
