Panthers Roll Over Bucs 48-16 as Newton Sets Another Record

The Panthers took an early 10 point lead and never looked back as the Bucs committed four turnovers. Rookie QB Cam Newton only threw for 177 yards with 91 of them coming on one TD pass to WR Brandon LaFell. He added three more TDs, two via the pass and another on a 49 yd keeper up the middle that broke the Bucs back. Newton didn't need to throw the ball much as RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart ran wild. All that and the rookie passing record for Cam Newton was on display today at BoA Stadium.

Here's my quick hits:

  • The Panthers ran for 270 yards (8.7 ypc) versus the Bucs 59
  • The Panthers forced 3 fumbles and newly promoted S Jonathan Nelson intercepted a Josh Freeman pass
  • Speaking of Nelson he added 7 tackles and pass knocked down... a great showing for a guy the Panthers got off the street eight days ago.
  • RB DeAngelo Williams was the dagger today, opening the scoring with an 8 yard jaunt and then vanquishing our 3rd quarter blues with a 22 yarder to extend the lead to 17. He finished with 66 yards.
  • RB Jonathan Stewart had his first reception for a TD of the season, scoring from 11 yards out on a 4th down play.

More after the jump...

Star-divide

  • The Panthers put up 433 yards of offense to the Bucs 317 though the Bucs had 5 minutes more time of possession and 11 more plays
  • DT Andre Neblett had a sack as did DE Thomas Keiser. Kearse and Shirley split one as well.
  • LB Jordan Senn had another nice outing with 10 tackles
  • LB Jason Williams had a perfect tackle and forced fumble on kick coverage...on of the better ones of the season on special teams
The vibe of this game was positive from the outset as the Panthers took the opening kick off and scored a TD. The defense in turn held the Bucs to 10 points in the first half as the offense rolled. Once Williams scored to open the scoring in the 2nd half this one was never in doubt. Newton's 49 yard score will certainly be Sports Center fodder all day.
So feeling good about this one Panther fans?

What a great game for the Panthers and fans.....

…. I hope this big win doesn’t impede them from getting ready for the Saints. As good as New Orleans is in the dome, and otherwise, it would be great to end the season with a another big win.

Great game from all 3 phases of the game.

Not turning the ball over helps as well, newton was great today. Love seeing the running doing great, more carriers will get them going.

This game was a great Christmas present. Great showing all around. This team has defiantly turned the corner. Ron Rivera seems to really have sold his players on 2012 starting now. Playing for now and first game next year. Panthers got the momentum and we keep on building.

The beautiful thing about that run

was that Cam dragged a guy the last 5 yards into the endzone

CAM is the difference

Mare is pretty good when he’s kicking extra points and not field goals. If we wanted a guy who could make FGs, we should’ve kept Kasay.

CAM, the GOAT

This, IMO, is the greatest rookie season ever. Most passing and rushing and total yards for a rookie QB. Most total TDs for a rookie. Most rushing TDs for a QB. Longest pass play in team history. Unbelievable. But did you notice that everyone else seems to be playing more and more at CAM’s level? I bet we’ll be a preseason favorite to win the division by a lot of people after we beat the Saints next week, and finish the season winning 5 of 6.

i don't know about how good the Panthers will be but here is some perspective on Cam Newton that blows my mind

-107 yards away from becoming the first player in NFL history to record 4000 yards passing and over 500 yards rushing ( currently over 670 yards)
-highest offensive rank in NFL history for a team with a rookie quarterback at the helm EVER
-Must TD’s accounted for by a rookie with 34
-Most yards passing for a season by a rookie
-Leading the NFL in rushing TDs
-Most TD rushing by a quarterback in a season in NFL history
-Most yards in a game by a rookie

Now this is what really blows my mind. I am a Detroit Lions fan and the Lions are one of the oldest teams in the NFL. And in Lions history this is the most touchdowns we have ever scored as a team in our history with 52. Yet Carolina with a rookie quarterback scores 47….and 7 of Detroits TD’s are on defence :(… YOU GUYS ARE CHEATING!!!

The first one was right before Mare kicked his first FG.
Through my head came the refrain

Second thing that went through my head was when we pulled our offensive starters.
I imagined hearing an announcer say.

“The Panthers have this game totally in hand, they’ve put their second string players on offense on the field. They’d have put their second string defense on the field too, except most of them are on Injured Reserve.”

That's not true.

Godfrey’s more than earned his contract extension. They ask so much from him, especially this year with all of the huge injuries we’ve had, and while he hasn’t stepped up enough to measure out for you obviously, he has become a consistent and important cog of the defense. He and Gamble ARE the secondary this year.

by southtunnel on Dec 24, 2011 7:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think Davis might be back.

If he’s willing to restructure his contract, I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be back. Assuming he signs a small, incentive based contract, I think it’s more than worth taking a chance that he could end up being himself again. And if he doesn’t, they aren’t losing out on much and they keep Senn at WLB. Senn looks like he could be the guy anyway (or at least be a stopgap for a season).

I’ll agree though, I’m much less worried about the LB positions than I was a few weeks ago.

He brings a veteran leadership to the team. He has a ton of talent. If he doesn’t shatter on us again then he’ll become a great ROTATIONAL guy. Obviously you think they’ll just cut their losses and say “Nah, we have guys like Thomas Williams and Gaither coming back from injury next year and they’ll all be better for this team than you. Your ligaments are just too chancey to bet on. It’s not like we could give you 1 final shot to see if you can stay healthy through mini camp, training camp, and pre-season. Then come final cuts where we decide if you’re still WAY TOO risky and if ANY of those guys have shown more talent than you at this position. Hey! Quit laughing, I’m serious about that Williams guy, man oh man I think we have something with him. And dang, a guy like Williams or another FA have just NO chance of possibly making it onto our practice squad while we wait with fingers crossed hoping you prove these guys right and tear it again. And if you hold up then just look at all the talent we let sit on our practice squad while you helped shore up a great LBing core again” Yeah that’s defintely a conversation I think they’re going to have

Good job Panthers.

I missed the entire game. I’m out of town in Georgia and for some insane reason they didn’t carry the game. But I was the score on the sports ticker and I’ve been a happy man the rest of the day. Not to mention I have the entire game waiting at home for me on DVR. This is a game I won’t delete off of it for a long long time.

Adding to my great day is CJ Spiller’s route of Tim Tebow and the Broncos. Despite Buffalo’s continued propensity to hand Tashard Choice the ball even though he sucks, CJ Spiller ran for 111 yard in only 16 carries with 1 TD to add to his name. First 100 yard game of his career.

Good job Clemson. You represented today. Now if we can only get Jacoby Ford off his rear next week and finish strong, we’ll do alright!

Great Game today for the Panthers!

A lot of joy and happiness spread today at BOA. The defense bent a lot but did not break, especially in the 3rd Quarter right before the onslaught ensued. I’m pretty proud of Cam for playing pretty well in the game with his least amount of attempts all year (17). Cam still missed on a couple of throws, and he will have a lot of work to do this offseason, but overall, great game Cam, and great game Panthers.

I know this sounds crazy but after how much we improver this season, screw getting a wildcard next season, I think we will win the division and I see is being a 12-4 or 13-3 team next season. Our offense is perfect and will get better. With the addition of one more stud O lineman and maybe another star no 2 WR, and with Beason and our D healthy we will be dangerous. Unless a disaster happens we will get a wild card atleast next season of not win the division. How many teams can put up 30 or more points on a consistent basis like we can..

If we were in any other division

I’d agree with you. But we have the toughest division in football in my opinion. And the Falcons and Saints won’t make it easy to win. It’s going to be a hell of a fight for it, that’s for sure. And I can easily see 3 NFC South teams in the playoffs next season.

Do a barrel roll!

by Thaddeus_Griffin on Dec 24, 2011 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I’m thinking we go 9-7, or 10-6. It’s hard to say because you can never account for injuries. Either way, it’s nice to see the panthers become an exciting team again. There seems to be so much more life in them now, which is extremely refreshing.

by brothernick87 on Dec 24, 2011 9:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think you are lowballing us a little.

10-6? Heck, with the experience the team has this year, they would make 10-6 as they are right now, and that isn’t counting getting our stars back off IR. We have been close to winning almost every game we lost this year, And these fill in players are playing better than they were when we lost some of these games. If they were playing back then, like they are now, we would have 10 wins now. Just think when we get Beason back, if he is the same as before his injury. Then Davis if he can stay healthy. Then Otah if he can stay healthy. Then a good first round pick, no matter what position it is. Then Gettis back. I think we are a 13-3 team next year.

After Lafell’s 91 yd TD, Cam went to the bench and gave Derek Anderson some love (as usual.) Then they both sort of threw up a panther claw at each other after the skin dap, much like the Texas Rangers did during their recent playoff endeavors after a good play.

I think the Bucs future looks pretty bright.

Their QB is still young and learning. They have I think the youngest team in the NFL. They have the most cap space in the NFL. If they apply their remaining cap space this year to the players they want to keep, they will have a lot of cap space to work with next year. That means they can sign a few good free agents to work with the young team they have. It is almost the same situation the Panthers had this year. I posted in the NFL site earlier this week, I think the Panthers and Bucs will be the 2 fighting for the NFC south title every year very soon.

Alright guys.. For those who care, with tie breakers factored in we are guaranteed a top 12 pick in the draft. If we win next Sunday we get the 12th pick, if we lose we get the 9th pick. I think us going 7-9 and getting the 12th pick in the draft would be very solid. Yes Kalil, Dre K, Blackmon and Claiborne will be gone BUT guys like Reiff, Decastro, Devon Still, Zach Brown, Kendall Wright or Malcolm floyd would most likely be great value picks with the 12th pick.

Gettis?? forgot about him. I think Smith, Lafell, Gettis, and company will do the trick next year. DEFENSE is the flavor of this draft.

Panther fans need to not “put the cart before the horse”. Look at the year Tampa had last year. Now look at what happen to them this year. As a Panther fan I want to see steady improvement next year and the playoffs. Then this team needs to be a playoff team for years to come. I am sick of a playoff season every two or three years. I want to be like the Colts were. IMO….. something like that will be the only way we keep Cam after his first contract is up.

Couple of thoughts

on the 91 yard play – J-Stew and Smitty’s 3 blocks will never show up in the stat book, but that was the difference of preventing a sack, and 40 more yards respectively.

I’d like to give the game ball to Madam Wango, for her work on removing all of the Bucs’ mojo. They looked snakebit most of the game.

the only team with a great LB core in our division right now is ATL

Its no coincidence that we scored the fewest points against ATL out of our division games, and its also one of TEN’s strengths. A good LB corps is what you need to manage the option.

by ppalm on Dec 25, 2011 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

That game was amazing

4th game I’ve been to this year. By far the best atmosphere yet. The fans were really into it and there’s a lot of excitement for this team. Gamble not making the Pro Bowl would be a snub of epic proportions. The Buccaneers completely avoided him all day. We still are pretty atrocious at covering underneath routes, and that’s where virtually all their offense came from, but I think that will be fixed with Beason and Co back.

Since getting blown out by Tennessee, we have scored 32.2 points per game. If we can keep that going into next year and shore up the defense some, this team can be a force.

Love watching the team play a complete game and dominate from start to finish. What a great christmas gift for Panther nation. Also, love the Swagger that our team is developing out there… they look like they are having fun, and are regaining that winning attitude that they were so desperately searching for early in the season.

I will not be at all surprised if we play spoiler to the Saints next week in a major statement game.

Game

I predicated final 41-17. I also said Car. should run all over these guys which happened. Wasn’t too hard to figure out really. For a big guy, Cam got amazing running skills. He’s a lot faster than I thought he was . That was a great catch by Lafell. You people keep saying we need a #2 rec, Forget about it. I think if Gettis comes back healty, we could have 2 #2. Best of both worlds. Our def. is what it is. Coaches are doing a great job with what they have. I see us adding pieces to def. in offseason, we should be in playoff hunt next year. I see a very bright. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
