Favourite 2012 Draft Prospects

'Cos I'm bored and I can't sleep on Christmas Eve I thought I'd pose CSR a little exercise (it's Draft related, so if you're not interested in that look away now!).

The exercise is: Regardless of where they WILL be drafted, who is your favourite prospect at each position in this draft? It's not about who you think will be the best per se, just who do you think will be very good.

If nothing else I think it'd be an interesting reference point for us to look back at in two or three years to see who has a keen eye for talent. Keeping it all in one place, rather than having to trawl through thousands of posts to recall what you said about each prospect.

Star-divide

This may die a death, but here goes, my list:

Offence:

QB: Andrew Luck (Stanford)

RB: Lamar Miller (the U)

WR: Devier Posey (Ohio St)

TE: Ladarius Green (Louisiana-Lafayette)

OT: Matt Kalil (USC)

ILB: Luke Kuechly (Boston College)

OLB: Sean Spence (the U)

CB: Janoris Jenkins (N. Alabama)

Yeah he's one of the loyal ones.

I honestly think Forston, Vernon and Streeter are leaving too early. I don’t blame Lamar Miller though because RBs have a short shelf life and he proved this year that he’s an NFL talent.

Interesting choice going with Moore

But I like it. Too many people are hopping on the Andrew Luck train because everyone and their brother is singing his praises

Being a Georgia fan I've had to watch Rainey and Demps for far too long

If you even think about blinking either are off to the races. From what I’ve seen they can both block well on the rare occasion they don’t get their number called for a third down screen. Huge plus in my book considering this is one of the biggest knocks on this breed of player. Wonder if we will scoop one up? Would be a shiny arsenal of runners in our quiver…

That and his name wouldn't fit on a jersey.

I’ll be looking for him and Orson Charles (Georgia) in 2013 then if neither decide to come out. I think Orson is staying another year too. Would Love a TE corps of Shock, Barn, & Lutz/Orson. Greg Olsen is a tweener in my book, still love him though.

Well, as I understand it...

He’s graduating, but has one year of eligibility left due to red-shirting a year. So, there really is no reason to go back.

How about to win a bowl game?

I knew that he was a redshirt jr. I don’t blame him for leaving he’s a top 5 pick, I’m just a little surprised that he’s not staying to win a bowl game.

by OldhamA on Dec 25, 2011 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

To win a bowl game? Seriously?

He would waste an ENTIRE year doing nothing, since he probably wouldn’t be studying JUST to win a MEASLY bowl game? I don’t know how you thought that would be influential.

by jkp1516 on Dec 25, 2011 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

Well, given that the bowl game could be the Natty Champ Game...I can kinda see where Oldham is coming from.

I would think he were making a mistake had he went back, but I can see (and respect) a guy trying to win a national title in his last year of eligibility over making millions of dollars to be an NFL rookie.

I like this list a lot.

I think if someone can harness Burfict he’s going to be a player in this league. He’s a 15 yard penalty waiting to happen at this point – he plays far too out of control.

As for Barron, he made my list too – the thing is I don’t think he’s all that great in coverage (not that he’s bad), but he makes EVERY tackle. I love that from a SS.

by OldhamA on Dec 25, 2011 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

Amen. As far as Burfict and Kuechly go,

I think that Burfict will have the better stats in his first few years in the league, but Kuechly will have the better career overall.

Oh, I also found this OLB from Georgia, Jarvis Jones. Dude has 13.5 sacks this year and 19.5 TFL and led the team in tackles with 69. He’s a Redshirt Sophomore that transferred from USC (SoCal), so he might not declare this year, but in a couple of years he might be a force in the league.

by Son of a Newton on Dec 25, 2011 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

I had the HONOR of watching this guy play ball live this year...a lot

He loves the game and only wants to get better. He had 4 sacks and a FF against the rival Florida this year. Even on plays where he doesn’t record the tackle he in the mix, his pursuit is relentless. I cannot advocate this player enough, sadly we will have to wait another year because he does want to stay in school. (Georgia is quietly building something special in the SEC with all the attention on Bama and LSU, rightfully so.) Jarvis is the anchor of the defense and his ability to dissect a play is what gives him such a good advantage off the snap. I would swim the english channel if wound up with him in the ‘13 draft.

Yes, I’m guilty of being a homer but I try to hold it in most of the time. Keep your radar on Jarvis because he truly is a special player who is humbled by the game we all love.

I think Hightower is the type of player to be on RRs LB-radar as well. I’m still trying to get on the Minnifield train though. I’ve seen a lot of people speak highly of him on here but I simply didn’t watch enough UVA football to grade him, how’d he match up against the better ACC receivers?

I don't keep up with college FB enough to give a legit listing or one that would be accurate regarding players actually declaring for the draft.

But since you seemed upset in PT’s thread about getting less comments (and I don’t blame you) I thought I would help your cause. Instead this is the short list of players I wish were coming out and the Panthers could get:

WR – Sammy Watkins, Clemson

DB – Tyrann Mathieu, LSU

Oldham, I LOVE this idea, however...

I’m going to refrain from posting my thoughts just yet because there is so much more to go. I’ve got a lot of scouting left to do, as do professionals, and there are a lot of events that may sway my opinion.

Let’s do this again immediately before the draft. Let’s do it in April. We’ll all be more educated about draft prospects and be able to express more firm and educated opinions and projections. Doing it now only handcuffs us to the opinions which we currently hold.

I’m ready to talk about the draft, but I’m holding off until the season’s over so we know where we are picking…I don’t want to guess who we’re picking AND what spot we’re picking in the draft order…that’s too much guess work for me, lol.

I can see why he's 2nd round material

He’s had moments where he’s pushed through multiple lineman to get into the backfield, but he’s also been driven back on numerous occasions. He also seems to get rotated out somewhat frequently. I see potential, but I definitely wouldn’t reach for him.

by jmob on Dec 30, 2011 2:31 AM EST up reply actions

I watched that game...

And he played great. I don’t understand how he receives the criticism for the outcome of a 11 man operation. He’s a great player, but in no way can he cover all of the receivers, play the other 3 D line positions, and the LB positions all at once and well.

I don’t understand how you take Baylor scoring points as a conclusion that Ta’amu is a bad prospect. He’s a greate prospect, however he plays on a pretty piss poor D.

by jkp1516 on Dec 30, 2011 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

482 yards on the ground (I'm taking jmob's figure here) suggests that he had a big part to do with why Washington lost.

by OldhamA on Dec 30, 2011 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

In his defense though:

There were times when he was getting double and triple teamed by the Bears offensive line. I thought his performance was very up and down though. He had times where’d he fight through multiple lineman to be disruptive, and other times that he’d get driven back by a single lineman. He also seemed to get gassed very quickly.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 30, 2011 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Also in his defense.

The type of offense Baylor runs gasses you pretty quickly. I doubt he’ll see much of that in the NFL.

That said he didn’t impress me, I saw more out of the other DT than I did out of Ta’amu.

Yes I'm a dude.

NT’s aren’t flashy. He’s not flashy. He does dirty work. If really watched him, he admirably did dirty work well.

Like I’ve said before, Ta’amu can’t be singly responsible for the result of an entire team. All eleven guys should be responsible.

Outstanding Performances In Bowls By Baylor's RB Greenaway & Toledo's WR White

Baylor’s RB Terrance Greenaway (5-11, 240, 4.62-40) was considered a possible NFL FB before this bowl game, but his 21 carries, for 200 yards, and 5 TD’s, have probably locked him in as a RB. I don’t know about you, but on his breakaway TD runs last night he looked much faster than a 4.62-40, maybe around a 4.5, or even in the mid to high 4.4’s. Last night probably pushed him up to the 2nd or 3rd round.

Toledo’s WR Jordan White (6-0, 215, 4.54-40) is almost exactly the same size and speed as WR Justin Blackmon, and has been even more productive. In their bowl game against Purdue he had 13 catches, for 260 yards, and 1 TD. For the season, White finished with 140 catches, for 1,911 yards, and 17 TD’s. Toledo list White as 6-2, 215, while scouts agree that he’s probably only 6-0, but he’s a very strong, physical receiver, with great hands. Like Greenaway, White looks faster on the field than his projected 4.54-40 time, he looked to me like he runs in the mid 4.4’s. Pryor to the bowl game he was projected as a 6th round pick, but they said if he runs well at the Combine he could shoot up to the 3rd round.

by PanthersRoar on Dec 30, 2011 7:57 AM EST reply actions

Early list, I reserve the right to change it as the draft gets closer.

Kirk Cousins (very good backup, could develop into a solid starter)
Robert Griffin (if he lands in the right situation he’s an elite QB)
Russell Wilson (quality backup)
Chris Polk (solid runner, very physical)
Chris Rainey (lightning in a bottle, wouldn’t be opposed to spending a late round flier on this guy, he’ll drop due to durability concerns)
Michael Floyd (he’ll be the best receiver in this draft class)
Mohammed Sanu (good size and excellent hands)
Juron Criner (nice redzone weapon, will make clutch catches)
Kendall Wright (reminds me of Mike Wallace, very good hands too)
Ryan Broyles (massive production, produces with the ball in his hands)
Ryan Swope (saw this guy’s bowl game, it’s cliche but he reminds me of Wes Welker)
Dwayne Allen (good receiver, but I love his blocking more, truly a complete TE)
Any OL from Wisconsin (those guys are always solid)
Quinton Coples (very versatile DL, I think his lack of production is overblown as teams were doubling him constantly)
Dontari Poe (size/speed combo is amazing, production to match. Wouldn’t hesitate to take him with our second and would strongly consider him in the first even)
Devon Still (could be a good 5 or 3 technique for us, adds flexibility to our defensive front)
Jared Crick (Very very underrated, whomever gets him is getting a steal)
Lavonte David (Should we decide to go LB this is the guy we should pick up)
Travis Lewis (looked like a beast his first couple years, perhaps has regressed, but the skillset is still definitely there. If he can regain that I think he could be the best 4-3 OLB in the game)
Vontaze Burfict (I’m not scared by his aggressiveness, this is football right? Exactly the type of player a struggling defense needs to build around)
Audie Cole (solid instincts, always around the ball)
Alfonzo Dennard (smart, physical defender. I’ll take guys like him on my team all day)
Dre Kirkpatrick (as either a CB or safety)
Cliff Harris (won’t measure out well at the Combine or workouts, and has some off-field issues, but play on the field is excellent. Good punt returner as well, hopefully we can pick him up in the later rounds)

Yes I'm a dude.
