Panthers Top5 Defensive Plays in Victory over Texans

Though the offense provided some highlights of their own this is easily a game to tip the hat to the defense. The Panthers held the 10-4 Texans to 13 points largely due to 3 forced turnovers. Texan fans may try to take this one away pointing out they started a rookie QB and had numerous other injuries but the Panthers were doing the same. With 15 players on IR we hardly want to hear another fan base cry about injuries.

Instead lets heap some exaltation on those players that instead rose to the occasion. Here's the top 5 defensive plays in the Panthers 28-13 victory over the Texans.

Play #5: Playing tight man coverage at the line, CB Brandon Hogan drives WR Kevin Walter to the sideline (legally) getting him to step out of bounds. Walter then catches a pass for a TD but it actually results in a penalty for illegal touching. That's a pretty smart play by a rookie CB getting his first NFL game action.

Play #4: On 3rd and 5 from the Panther 7 yard line CB Chris Gamble steps in front of a short pass intended for Kevin Walter and nearly intercepts it. The Texans settle for a FG and the Panthers defense stops a drive that started on their own 35 yd line.

Play #3: On only the 2nd play of the game RB Arian Foster takes the hand off but is drilled by LB Jordan Senn and fumbles the ball. LB James Anderson falls on it and the Panthers take over on the Texan 26 yd line. The Panthers score four plays later to take the early lead.

Star-divide

Play #2: On 3rd and goal from the Panther 9 yd line with 7:34 remaining in the game and the Panthers nursing a 15 point lead QB Yates throws into the end zone targeting Jacoby Jones. LB James Anderson instead jumps in front of Jones and intercepts the ball and kills the Texans last chance at a come back.

Play #1: On 3rd and 13 from the Panthers 43 yd line and 6:38 left in the 1st half, LB Jordan Senn dropped back into coverage. QB TJ Yates threw left to Kevin Walter but did not get enough on the pass to get it over Senn, who reached up and plicked the ball out of the air and returned it 21 yards to the Texans 48yd line. It would lead to another Panthers TD on the bumerooskie play.

There are your top 5 Panther defensive plays of the week.

Nice post.

I was re-watching the game yesterday, and for the first time in a long time, maybe all season, I didn’t fast forward through our defense. If we can even carry a little of the momentum we’re currently building into the next season, we will be deadly.

Is there a website

that you go to rewatch the game. I’d love to do that if its online

nflrewind

there is a fee but you can rewatch any of the games from this year or the last few years if you want and for all of the teams. Each game has both a full tv broadcast and a condensed play by play only version. I picked it up for $12 in preseason but no idea what the cost is now. Its been worth it for me.

Good list...

When I first saw the Walter TD (before it was called back), I was like “oh great, Hogan got burned”, and then I saw what he actually did, and I had to do a double take to make sure it was actually Hogan (the rookie) and not one of the veterans. It was a very smart play by Hogan, and I hope that’s only the beginning of the smart plays and good plays that we see from him.

Two things I noted from Hogan's limited PT

That play, of course, but also that we didn’t see a receiver that he was covering catch a ball for the rest of the game. That is very impressive in his first start.

I hope he gets serious play time this week

I want to see pilares and AE at wideout more as well. We are running out of opportunities to explore these guys potential. Anybody heard about Godfrey and Pughs status?

I believe we will see some more of Hogan

and Senn (him moreso by default) because how they perform could really impact how we draft next year. I still believe if we win out and drop a little further in the draft, we lean toward drafting Brown, but does Senn wow them so much that they go Oline instead? And obviously Hogan looking good will cause not to draft another CB, though the thoughts last week of getting Clairborne were nice (funny how that draft picture changes so drastically from week to week).

by carolinapillpusher on Dec 20, 2011 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

I would still take Claiborne if available!!!

Hogan played for 3 or 4 plays in the whole game. At this point even Stanford seems to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Obviously if Hogan can stay healthy and move ahead of Stanford in the pecking order, the need for Claiborne reduces.

However, with us winning out from here, Caliborne won’t be available and Dre Kirkpatrick might be the ideal pick to replace Sherod Martin at FS, IMO our weakest position right now, based on the improved play and hope provided by Senn and Hogan.

by Sukhan on Dec 20, 2011 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Hogan was a mid-round pick.

Claiborne is the consensus top CB in the draft. There’s little Hogan can do to make me feel justified passing on Claiborne.

Besides, I’d love to have a Gamble/Claiborne/Hogan/Munnerlyn/Butler CB corps next year. You need at least three good CB with how pass-heavy the NFL is now, and that’d give us five CB’s at least capable of being a nickelback.

That's pretty impressive

I take that to mean Yates wasn’t throwing his way very often, which isn’t usually the case with a rookie CB.

by Neilicus on Dec 20, 2011 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

He knew what he was doing, and what the ruling would be - very heady for a rookie.

He was pointing OOB to the official, as the ball was being caught, in effect making the call easy.

I can’t imagine Richard Marshall, or Captain Munnerlyn, having the savvy to do either. This augers well for our CB problems to be solved.

You are so right. Good catch.

Rare misstep for me. Thanks for the correction.

(and I saw what you did there, in the title – nice)

by bigdavis on Dec 21, 2011 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

was it intentional or lucky for Hogan's part?

I know it’s harder to do than it seems but you’d think more corners would try to do it but they don’t. But it was a great heads up play.

by Penn Panther Fan on Dec 20, 2011 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

I actually just looked it up in the NFL Referees Rulebook, and it was more of a Gutsy play by Hogan

If Walter had reestablished his position inbounds almost immediately, instead of running out of bounds for a few more yards, Then the play would have resulted in a TD. I’m also pretty sure that Meeks or McDermott called the play for him to jam Walter at the line.

Nice top 5

I was remembering them as I read them. It would be really cool if you could post video clips of them for us to watch. What I was wondering because I can’t remember, is did Hogan stick with the guy he forced out or did he stay in coverage against someone else?

I think he stayed in coverage and fell behind. He might of thought the play was over when he drove the guy out of bounds tho.

by Panthster on Dec 20, 2011 10:16 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

That is what I am hoping happened.

That because he knew the play was over for that guy he could move to some1 else. It was still a good play even if he tried to stay with the guy, but would be a better play if he stayed back to make sure someone else didn’t make the play.

From what I remember

He dropped off Walter because he knew he was ineligible, then it looks like he went to go for someone else but by the time he found someone the ball was thrown to Walter. And that’s when he appealled to the Ref. Good to see him on the field making a great play. We could use it.

The play

I tell you what stood out to me on the play. How physical he was with the rec. coming off the line. I for one loved this. That was his mo coming out of W.V. It sounded like coach was saying Capt. was really hurt with hamstring. I think you will see him on field next game as #2 to see what he’s got. I was very encouraged by what I saw.

by oldpanther on Dec 20, 2011 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Walter is no easy push over either

Savvy vet, long time #2 for the Texans, fairly big strong guy. Hogan taking him out of the play was a statement.

I'm looking forward to finishing the season strong

People say we have nothing to play for but its like the Panthers have been saying for awhile now, they are playing for each remaining Sunday and the first Sunday next September. I will be giddy as hell if we can finish at 7-9 but even 6-10 will be a successful campaign for the first year coach and the rookie QB.

You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

Last years Lions had only won two games last year until

they finished the season on a 4 game win streak to go 6-10. There is no doubt that the momentum they finished with helped to propel them to go undefeated in the preseason and win their first five games to start the season this year. Winning at the end of this year helps to build confidence for next year. We have the potential, especially if the defense can at least return to be average, to make the jump from 6-10 to the playoffs. Once you are out of the top 3-4 picks, the “super elite” guys are gone anyway, so it is far better to build your winning mentality by winning at the end of the season. We are still picking in the top half of the draft, so we will still get a pretty good player regardless.

by carolinapillpusher on Dec 20, 2011 12:10 PM EST reply actions

That was Hogan's first ever play in the NFL

Godfrey got hurt, so Pugh had to go in for him. Pugh got hurt, so Stanford went in for Pugh. So Stanford wasn’t available to play CB, and that left Hogan, Munnerlyn and Gamble as our CBs. Butler was already hurt and Martin was the other safety. One more injury, and Smitty would’ve had to play CB…probably would’ve got a sack, too.

I know this is alittle off topic but..

has any one done the projections on our 2012-13 schedule. We all know our 6 division games, next year we get the AFC west, NFC east, Arizona, and a wildcard game. We all like to do our draft predictions, im already looking ahead to next season. Tough schedule (potentially), and fans we get some great home games, Dallas, NY Giants, Raiders, Chargers and the Arizona revenge game @ home this coming year. So we know all but one of the teams that we play, let the record predictions fly. Dallas has to be a Sunday/Monday Nighter and I plan to be in attendance. Another marquee game is Denver. Cam vs Tebow, RR (BAMF) vs FOX, cant WAIT! – in DENVER -

9-7, is a stretch but ill go with that for now.
7-9 this year, i believw we win out!

by ePanther on Dec 20, 2011 1:34 PM EST reply actions

We might get Seattle instead of Arizona if Arizona finishes ahead of Seattle in the NFC West

And Chicago will be the other game in all likelihood. Next year’s schedule looks like this:

Home games:
San Diego Chargers
Oakland Raiders
Dallas Cowboys
New York Giants
Chicago Bears
New Orleans Saints
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Atlanta Falcons

Away Games:
Denver Broncos
Kansas City Chiefs
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins
Arizona Cardinals/Seattle Seahawks
New Orleans Saints
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Atlanta Falcons

I actually find this schedule very favorable. The 8-6 Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys have the best current record out of any of our non-divisional opponents. I definitely think 10-6 is within the realm of possibility assuming we have everybody back healthy and make good acquisitions this offseason.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 20, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think if we finish 6-10 this season

we could go to 10-6 next season just keeping the players we have now. They will have this year’s experience and an entire off season to get better. Now add in the players on IR that we are missing, plus a decent first 2 rounds draft and I can see us going 13-3. They have shown that they can compete against the best of teams this year with the players they have in now.

Love the optimism but...

I believe we split with ATL and NO.
Philly in Philly very tough
KC in KC tough
Either Dallas or NYG can get us
And Denver is a toss up, Fox knows most of our players and their abilities + the Tebow magic.

I personally see a 9-7 season, as the team struggles to learn how win games as a unit early on.

by Son of a Newton on Dec 20, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think 9-7 is a very modest prediction

I think we’ll go 4-2 in the division. We will lose either Raiders or Chargers. KC doesn’t scare me. We will go 3-1 or 2-2 in the NFC East. I think we’ll also beat both our wildcard matchups. 12-4 or 11-5 is what I predict.

by Atlantapanther on Dec 20, 2011 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

That's pretty lofty for a 6-10/7-9 football team.

KC in KC scares me, and as for the other teams, every team in the NFL will get better this offseason. All 32 clubs will be getting key personnel back from injuries. Not to mention, the Panthers this year haven’t shown they know how to close out a win on a quality team on a week to week basis.

Exactly...thats why i posted the outlook...

Looking back on this year, we had a cupcake schedule compared to next year. Half the games this year we caught the oppostion at their absolute lowest point. No excuses next year, get it done.

by ePanther on Dec 20, 2011 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Optomism

Obviously its hard to predict the future but considering the talent we have I don’t think any game on the schedule is a sure loss.

Brandon Hogan

Thanks for the great post. I had to miss my first game and can only find the same hilights over and over. Can you/anyone give an overall analysis and impression of Brandon Hogans performance, hilights/lowlights?

by Cole on Dec 20, 2011 3:50 PM EST reply actions

There really isn't much, as we did not see him until late

The only marquee play is the aforementioned force out of Kevin Walter. We did not hear his name called otherwise, which is a good thing usually.

As soon as he entered the game, on that play, they went after him.

I think he answered the call. A lot of rookie CBs, seeing their first game action, would have been burnt badly.

Should see a lot more of him this week, and if Munny isn’t ready, he might start.

Insightful Post

Good job, and I really thought Jordan Senn made a phenomenal impact.

by catsfan2000 on Dec 20, 2011 4:04 PM EST reply actions

You guys did see that it was a joint fumble by Anderson and Senn

When they showed the close up replay Anderson had his hands on the ball and was pulling when Senn came in and laid the hit that jarred it loose and away into Anderson. But yeah great post and man I’m excited to see how bad we wopp Tampa this Saturday. You know that Aqib Talib is now on IR, so besides Ronde Barber, they have nobody to cover us. Haha, we’re going to tear them up. I’m calling biggest win of the year for us.

by daviddemont on Dec 20, 2011 4:41 PM EST reply actions

We will win big

We will finish 7-9 while the Bucs finish 4-12. How awesome would that be.

by Atlantapanther on Dec 20, 2011 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

I just watched the game again...

and I must say that forced fumble belongs to #50. Anderson’s hand gets to the ball first and while it doesn’t come out until Senn lays the hit on Foster, Senn doesn’t really get his hand on it. I know a person can get half a tackle so if there’s such a thing as a combined forced fumble this would be it. However, it is my suggestion that Anderson had >50% of this one. I’m not trying to beat the Anderson drum for its own sake here. I still think Senn deserves the game ball. His read on Yates for the Int was beyond sick. I just want to give #50 his due.
Has anyone else re-watched that play? Did you see what I saw?
