Week 15 Panther Game Ball of the Week in Win over Texans Fan Poll

It's time to pick the Panthers game ball of the week winner and we have a number of worthy candidates from the Panthers 28-13 win over the Texans. Let's start with the unlikely hero fo the game, in my view anyway:

LB Jordan Senn - The Senn Master led the Panthers with 12 solo tackles (14 combined); a forced fumble, a pass knocked down, 1 tackle for loss and a key INT

LB James Anderson - Mr. Anderson logged 6 tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass knocked down, a fumble recovery and a goal line INT to seal the deal.

QB Cam Newton - Did not turn the ball over and posted a 105.2 QB rating on 149 yards passing and 2 TDs

RB DeAngelo Williams - Williams blasted for 61 yards on 15 carries and a last TD to extend the lead.

WR Steve Smith - Smitty opened the scoring with a 26 yd TD and finished with 5 receptions for 82 yards

Senn Master

Everyone on that list played well, but IMO without Jordan’s play, this would have been a very different game.

Jordan Senn was ridiculous yesterday...

I don’t think it’s really even close. He was making plays everywhere, all game long.

I gave my vote to Anderson.

Senn played a heck of a game but Anderson has been playing well all season and also played well yesterday. Next game Senn plays well and is in the options I will vote him, but Anderson deserves some of the love too.

yeah, but this is the GAME ball

Not the season ball, and in that regard, I think it has to go to Senn.

Yeah, but Anderson made the stop when it was needed most

I had to give Anderson my vote as well. Though Senn was a close second.

But....

Anderson made one play. Senn made about 18 plays.

I look at it this way

Anderson provided the momentum shift needed to light a fire under the team’s ass and close out the game. Senn was awesome sure but I was only able to see limited coverage on NFL Red Zone. If anything, both men are deserving of the game ball.

It can also be argued that the end-zone INT was more of a “right place at the right time” deal and Yates just made a bad throw.

I voted Senn but i can agree that Anderson deserves some love

He made at least two plays. Wasn’t it James that recovered Jordan’s FF?

That "stop" was sort of a gimmie.

I could have caught that.

I was talking about Anderson

Wasn’t that last INT thrown to him? Not knocking him, I just don’t think that one gimmie INT warrants the game ball.

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

by southtunnel on Dec 19, 2011 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Anderson's INT was right to him and towards the end when there was no hope

Senn made a very athletic INT when Yates was in a rhythm and the game was still competitive. Plus Senn had 14 total tackles while keeping Arian Foster from running 200 on us. That’s pretty sick.

by Atlantapanther on Dec 19, 2011 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Those missed tackles by other LBs have been a huge problem for us. Senn was making those arm tackles

by Penn Panther Fan on Dec 19, 2011 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

There's no way

It’s anyone but Senn. He’s making a very strong case right now about his future. I have a feeling he’s gonna be around a while.

I like the name of that play "Bumerooskie"

It’s funny because the QB sticks the ball in somebody’s bum :D

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

by southtunnel on Dec 19, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

i don't know if game balls are just for players...

but in light of the Chudrooskie (can’t really be a fumblerooskie if the ball never touches the ground), the blocking scheme on D-Will’s run and the overall plan for attacking the NFL’s #1 defense, doesn’t the Chudster belong on the ballot?

by Floods on Dec 20, 2011 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

He at least deserves some contrition, form those who've been criticizing his play-calling, in weeks past.

Very solid game plan, all around.

Wade Philips has been getting a lot of talk for his guru leadership, in turning around the previously sad state of affairs that was the Texans’ defense.

But Chud has been just as effective for what he’s accomplished here, with our bottom of the barrel offense from 2010.

And even though Philips was not on the sidelines for this one, it was still his new system they played, and in the Battle of the Gurus, score a big one for Chud.

I for one would have liked to see that hang-dog expression on Philip’s face (had he been there), after we made it 21-0 against their vaunted D, when Brockel took it in.

by bigdavis on Dec 20, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Jordan Senn is the obvious answer...

…and the correct one.

Because of his play, the defense actually made some stops yesterday. Without it, I’m not certain the Panthers would have outlasted the Texans. Our offense (and Cam) did its usual job of scoring around 28 points or so. But for the defense to stymie what was (at the time) the #1 seed in the AFC and hold them to just 13 points, that’s pretty huge. Yes, the Texans were without their starting QB and WR1, but our defensive performance was still pretty significant considering how poor we’ve been against the run all season long and there was nothing wrong with Arian Foster and Houston’s O-line.

You could make a case for giving James Anderson a game ball with his TD-saving INT in the endzone on Houston’s last drive. But honestly, without the consistent play of Senn filling in at his position, I’m not sure Anderson would’ve been as free to do his own thing. Plus, when you grab an INT of your own to help the offense keep building momentum, force a fumble, and have that many tackles in a single game, Senn is going above and beyond Anderson’s single-play impact.

So, to me, this win is courtesy of the defense not rolling over. Instead, they took advantage of an injury-depleted opponent. Jordan Senn was at the forefront of that effort. Other guys (i.e., James Anderson) made big plays, too. But Senn was the primary reason for the overall result.

If I had a second game ball, I’d give it to Cam Newton. For him to throw 2 TDs, pull off the fumble-rooski play, and manage the game without a single turnover…all against the #1 defense in the league…that’s something special, too. He had his moments where he struggled, though. And again, in terms of the team’s effort leading to a win, I think the defensive performance this week was the primary difference-maker. Without that, I fear Cam’s stellar individual performance would have been wasted once more. Our QB challenged other players to rise up. And I think Jordan Senn did exactly that.

My two cents,
—Neil

BTW...

The actual Fumblerooski play is illegal in the NFL and has been for sometime. Since the ball was not fumbled to set up the play, but handed off, it’s legal

The need to quit calling it the "Fumblerooski"

That’s a completely different variation where you actually fumble by design… hence the name! I’d get it if this play had no name, but it does… the “Bumerooskie”.

I hope Chud can pull another surprise like this next week. That was a trip!

Hogan had very limited playing time but had a solid play where he out-muscled the WR to take him out of bounds then...

the receiver caught a pass but it was illegal since he had stepped OB. He showed some football awareness on that one.

That trick play is called the "Bumerooskie". Rivera learned it in San Diego.

Here’s a video of Rivers doing the exact same move Cam did, with Lorenzo Neal running in for the TD…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMwml58ddFU

I’m not sure the exact year of this video, so I’m only assuming Rivera or Chud were in San Diego during this. Regardless it was in that thick playbook they brought with them.

It has got to be easier for cam to rally the team when he can point to a cause they will fight for. Our defense stepping up again and again in this game could have been what provided the leverage Cam needed to motivate his troops.

No Game Ball of Shame this week...

As far as the Game Ball of Honor…. I will give it to Jordan Senn & Chudzinski

Here is why:

Chudzinski paid more attention to the game and made nice adjustments on the fly. You could see more of his adjustments in the fourth quarter. Houston was overly aggresive with the Rush!!!. He countered with creative Runs and one led to TD.. Way to go Chud. When you have versatile Weapons… You use it….Which is what you did….Oh by the way i love that trick play…

Jordan Senn actually set the tone early for the defense, His first interception really had an impacts on TJ Yates. When you dissect the tape you can see TJ was different afterwards which is expected from a rookie. He made it clear to TJ Yates that any errant throw his way will be picked

Jordan is underrated. He’s a solid player in my books…
