Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Last week, after the Panthers lost at home to Atlanta, longtime season-ticket holder R. Bruce Rognon, 71, of Pinehurst, N.C., was walking from the stadium to his car. Rognon collapsed. He died of a heart attack. His memorial service was Saturday in Pinehurst, and Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, who did not know Rognon, got in his car and drove the 80 miles to the service. "He [Rognon] never missed a game,'' said Richardson. "The least I could do was go to the service and pay my respects. These fans are amazing. They do more than invest their money. They invest their time and emotion, and they buy into your team. It is such a sad thing for the family.''

I love that he got it in his car and drove to the funeral of a man he didn't know.

I live in Pinehurst and one of my neighbors was at the wake.

To be honest, I didn’t really believe him when he told me as he is sometimes full of shit. Good story though.

I’m surprised that Peter King didn’t insinuate that J.R. asked the widow for gas money, since he’s so cheap.

I don't always like Peter King's work...

…but he doesn’t strike me as someone who make such a classless remark, even if it was presented as “tongue-in-cheek” satire.

I was being facetious.

I like King’s work fine, but he really pissed me off last year. The incessant “Jerry Richardson is cheap” remarks got me boiling. Then, when he threw Cam under the bus regarding his “icon and entertainer” remarks, I lost all respect for him. I talked to him on Sirius NFL radio several times last season about the cheap comments, but he would never back down. I’ve seen him do this several times over the years. He will be totally wrong about something (other than picks) but never admit it. Instead, he will write little “ass kissing” stories to make himself feel better.

King didn't have to write about this.

The very fact that he chose to do so, is to his credit.

And it certainly enlarged our scope of knowledge, as I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else – have you?

As this man is my age, it was especially touching to me. And in light of the fact that I drove 3 miles to the funeral of a close friend, who died last week, and hated doing it, I admire Richardson even more than I did before.

King doesn't have to write about anything.

He only wrote about this in an effort to get back in the good graces of the team. He hopes that he might one day get Cam to look at him again. King came to training camp, after screwing over Cam regarding the “icon and entertainer” comments, and was invisible to the team. He is merely scrambling in an effort to hop back aboard the Newton express.

As you will see in my earlier comment, I live in Pinehurst and yes, I had heard about Richardson visiting. However, I was skeptical due to the source of the information. I’m glad that it turned out to be true.

The story about Jerry Richardson is wonderful and very touching. We’ve always known what kind of man he is and that is why we all have so much respect for him. This is just another example of what a kind and loyal man he is. God bless you Jerry Richardson.

absolutely....not to take anything away from Jerry

there are millions who do good deeds everyday that go unnoticed….unfortunately we live in times where media thrives on sensation and you have to search for stories like this in some back page

In all seriousness, I love this. I don’t know any other owners who take the time to do something like this. Especially owners who are more spry than JR. A wonderful gesture… pure class.

I think he knows how fortunate he is that he is around to be able to go to anyone's funeral

Class act and a fortunate man to be alive. A few years ago it looked like his fans would be going to pay there last respects to him.
He must really enjoy watching his team now. I am glad he is here to see this team transition to being the fun team it is.
Well done Big Cat on both counts!
