Now and first and foremost let me get this out of the way. Before you get your hopes up I have not heard any rumors or rumblings whatsoever about VJax rockin the black and blue in 2012. This post is meant to explain why we absolutely should target Vincent Jackson in FA next season and how when I lay out the following points it will almost seem like Vincent Jackson is destined to be a Panther come 2012.
Steve Smith is almost like the George Clooney of WRs in that the dude just does not age. He said in his post game interview after the Falcons game on Sunday when discussing reaching the 10,000 receiving yards mark that he plans to be around for another 5 years, so we are set at our number one receiver. Now the question remains about our number 2 WR spot. Don't get me wrong, as many of you know i'm a big Brandon Lafell supporter and I think he will have a big role in this offense. The problem with Lafell is he seems to be more of a possession receiver and he's not that big body, vertical, deep threat that forces double teams. This is where Vincent Jackson comes in...
At 6'5 Vincent Jackson has that Calvin Johnson type size and he also runs a 4.52 40 time which is excellent for a WR his size. Vincent Jackson would be that WR that opposing teams would be forced to respect immediatley. He would be that big bodied WR we have been longing for so long now to compliment Steve Smith and take some pressure off him. He is a big target and a deep threat and standing at 6'5 he would be the perfect size to go up for a lot of Cam's passes that would be too high for Smith or any other of our WRs to grab.
Another obvious reason is he is a San Diego Charger and we all know by now that Rivera has an infatuation already with grabbing former Chargers players so you would have to assume he is dying to get Vincent Jackson here. Ron Rivera already knows him personally and would feel comfortable bringing him in and I think along Rivera puts in a good word, he can convince Hurney to loosen the purse strings and bring him in.
Vincent Jackson already knows this offense and thrives in it. He would contribute immediatley and would need little time becoming comfortable. Having a stud at the number 2 WR position would also do wonders at opening up our running game even more which in turn would help greatly at burning the clock so bad things don't happen. You know, like blowing a 20 point lead in the 2nd half. Yea those kind of bad things.
The bottom line is Vincent Jackson makes too much sense for us not to go after him. Another thing it would do is send a message to both the fans and the players that the days of the old, conservative Panthers are gone and we are going to do whatever it takes for Cam and the team to make it big. I understand signing big money for free agents is risky but so are draft picks. Atleast Vincent Jackson has played in the league for years, is proven to be consistent and has proven he thrives in this offense. Not only that it would send a clear message to Cam that he isn't playing for the Cavaliers and we will actually do everything we can to ensure we win a championship. A big reason why I think we will target Vincent Jackson is becaise A. Since we signed Shockey and he has been great for this team, it will alleviate fears Hurney had about signing free agents and B. If you remember, right before the season started Hurney came extremely close to signing Santana Moss before the Skins out bid us the last minute and he stayed in Washington which leads me to believe we had a serious interest in signing a veteran WR. Bottom line is, the writing is on the wall in bright NEON, Vincent Jackson needs to be a Panther next season.
