It's Tuesday night and that means it is time for none other than NFL draft Flavor Of The Week. Coming off our very disappointing loss on Sunday to the Falcons I found myself scratching my head because overall it looks like the whole team was playing on all fronts and playing well. I must say, as disappointing as this loss was, nothing really jumped out at me as an area of weakness like previous games. For example, comimg off the Detroit game and how we got gashed by a 3rd string RB it was plain as day as to what position we should draft and that being DT. So with that being said I have decided that our defense overall is lacking a big time playmaker and after using the process of elimination I keep comimg back to this draft prospect and that is Morris Claiborne.
No matter how many draft prospects I go through in my head it keeps coming back to Morris Claiborne. Infact, i'm going to call it now. Right now when tiebreakers are factored in we hold the number 4 overall pick. If come draft day we have the 4th-6th pick I predict Morris Claiborne will be the pick unless he has a awful pro day or awful showing at the combine. It's simple process of elimination. We already took two defensive tackles last year in the draft, Andre Neblett is showing a lot of promise as of late as is Frank Kearse and also Ron Edwards will be back. Not only that but I have a strong feeling we will go after Pat Simms in free agency. He just seems like a Hurney/Rivera signing. A solid but low key DT that probably won't break the bank. Still young but has also been through NFL conditioning and could contribute right away. So I think considering all that we will be fine at DT.
When you look at other positions, Morris Claiborne seems even more like the obvious pick. Yes we could use an offensive lineman but with Kalil most likely off the board there isn't a O lineman worth getting drafted at that spot. Yes I like Jonathan Martin but not this high. So with us being set at RB, QB, TE, DE and LB with Beason and Davis back it comes down to Morris Claiborne. He just makes the most sense at this point. I think we can all agree that Munnerlyn is not number 2 corner material and one could argue that despite Gamble we might have the worst DB corps in the league. Infact, if i'm not mistaken, despite Hogan and Gamble all the rest of our CBs are practice squad guys. Bottom line is we have a huge hole at our number 2 CB position.
About Morris Claiborne. 6'1 185 lbs, 4.45 40 time. 2011 stats; 46 TOT, 28 solo and 6 interceptions. 2010 stats; 37 TOT, 18 solo, 5 interceptions. Morris Claiborne is considered by nearly all draft experts as the best defensive player in the draft and he would fill a HUGE hole at CB for us. He is also an excellent punt returner. He has impeccable instincts and beautiful ball handling after an interception. He is basicially like having a WR on your defense. He goes up and fights for interceptions. He has 0 character concerns, a great leader of a very strong LSU secondary. Another thing I like is he is a winner on a winning team and much like Cam, he is on a college team that is undefeated. We need to draft players on championship teams, guys that aren't content with losing and have been winners their whole college career. We need a Cam like attitude on the defensive side of the ball and Morris Claiborne fits that mold.
