WR Brandon LaFell Promoted to #2 WR

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - NOVEMBER 27: Brandon LaFell #11 of the Carolina Panthers runs with the ball during the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 27, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera announced today that WR Brandon laFell would get the start across from Steve Smith this weekend against the Bucs.

Coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that "as of now," Brandon LaFell will start ahead of Legedu Naanee this week. Rivera's phrasing suggests there's no official changing of the guard even with Naanee (Achilles) practicing this week. LaFell is a borderline WR3 option against the Bucs this week. If he plays well, LaFell could convince Rivera to make the change permanent.

I acknowledge that the announcement has more to do with Naannee's achilles injury than anything else but I see it as the opportunity we have been anticipating. Rivera does like Naanee and his ability to block down field with his size. I don;t think Lafell represents a drop off in that regard. I think that after 11 games LaFell might finally be getting out of the proverbial doghouse, provided he truly was there to begin with.

So what would you want to see from LaFell to warrant permanent #2 WR status? I'm thinking 6 receptions (3 being 3rd down conversions) for 80 yards and a TD. Hmmmm...sounds like a fantasy sleeper...but that's a whole other post.

Hat tip to Jake Humphrey for being the first to post this via fanshot.

Not a better word could be said than "Finally"

I was one the biggest whiners about LaFell getting the number 2 nod over Naanee, and it’s finally happened! Mark my words he will take advantage of this opportunity and Naanee will be a distant memory when Gettis gets back.

Yes Lafell is awesome! Finally! BTW Cam got the boot for being on the cover of NFL magazine and guess who got it instead.. Tim Fuk**g Tebow. I’m not going to sit here and say I hope he suffers a season ending injury just so he will stop being over exposed.. But I will say, I wouldn’t have a frown on my face if it happened. I am so sick and tired of our society glorifying mediocrity!!

We love the Kardashians despite them having 0 talents whatsoever.. We obsess over Jersey Shore rats and now the awful QB Tim Tebow!!

God I hate Tim Tebow.. I hate him, I hate him I hate him!

He's getting coverage because he's part...

of the reason they are winning games. He’s an anomaly. He’s not afraid to show what he believes. The media will jump on any athlete with those characteristics. I’m fairly certain that he’s not seeking the media out. One question for you PT. Why so much vitriol toward the man?

by Derek Leazer on Dec 2, 2011 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

Because he is whats wrong with America. A overexposed no talent who is getting praised endlessly. Do I hate Tim Tebow just as a human being? No, do I hate how he shows whats wrong with this country? Yes. Im tired of the media praising mediocrity, Tim Tebow is the poster boy for the decline of America.

Tom Tebow represents why things arent made in America anymore, because of American’s longing and desire to praise and accept mediocrity. Why doesnt Von Miller ever get mentioned? He is the MVP of that team. But no, its Tebow Tebow and more Tebow. Everytime I see ESPN its always Tebow.

Why did Vince Young, Vick and Mcnabb get bashed for not being a “pure pocket passer” but yet Tebow is getting praised Like Jesus, literally.

Do I hate Tebow the human being? No, do I hate Tim Tebow, the poster bow for the reason of the decline in the United States and how he showcases first hand how americans praise mediocrity? With a passion!

by PantherTrain on Dec 2, 2011 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

Your previous post makes perfect sense.

You only watch the NFL and the NBA, which explains why you can call Tebow an ‘overexposed no talent’. Clearly you didn’t see him lead a Florida team to two National Championships and of course win the Heisman Trophy.

The kid has a hell of a lot of talent. No he’s not a conventional NFL QB, but what he’s doing works.

As for Von Miller getting no praise……are you serious? EVERYONE has him as the DROY, and I mean everyone. QBs always get more coverage. That’s the way football breaks down – they get the glory because it’s the glory position.

I've told him almost the exact same thing. Ugh!

When I see things like this:

Im tired of the media praising mediocrity, Tim Tebow is the poster boy for the decline of America.

My mind sort of switches off. Tim Tebow won 5 out of his last 6 games. He’s taken a team from the brink and he’s brought it to the playoff discussion. The team suddenly got good the moment he became the QB. And you think he’s mediocre. I say….no!

Remember the Dolphins

Running the wildcat offense the Phins took even the Pats by surprise, the way to beat the Broncos and Tebow is the same way to beat the wildcat, play the run every down. They may beat the Pats simply because NFL coaches will always play a “honest” defense against teams like the Broncos until one finally bucks the trend and I don’t think that will be BB.

Good observation.

Our first 2 games, Cam was able to throw for over 400 each time, because teams assumed taking away the run would force him to beat them with his arm.

He almost did it.

But Tebow’s not got that ability, and I think his rabbit foot’s about to be stolen.

The Jets have one of the better defences in the league and they failed to stop him.

by OldhamA on Dec 2, 2011 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

They stopped him

The offense had scored 3 points until that last drive. And those 3 points came after a 13 yard Jets punt. They moved the ball 15 yards and kicked a FG. The Jets shut down the Broncos save for one drive.

Yes, that's what I mean

But any good team would have put that game far out of reach by that point. If it weren’t for the Broncos’ stellar defense and the Jets’ mediocre offense, Tebow doesn’t even get the chance to go on that drive.

All I'm saying is, whole game considered, the Jets stopped them

The Broncos had 229 yards of total offense. That’s even below our beloved 2010 Panthers average offensive output.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 2, 2011 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Just because they won

doesn’t mean their offense produced. The Broncos defense handed the offense 10 points. The Broncos couldn’t move the ball other than the last drive. I don’t see how it’s debatable.

by JDeLong42 on Dec 2, 2011 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

All I was really saying was that you can't say what would or wouldn't have happened if something else had happened that didn't happen.

I really am not on either side in this debate. I don’t care what Tebow does or doesn’t do. I do hope the Broncos win some games because I like Fox as a coach.

STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!

by MrBernz on Dec 2, 2011 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree with saying that "Tebow has won" the games

As many other people have commented, Tebow hasn’t won the games so much as the improved defensive play has won them. The Bronco’s offense has actually gotten worse (something like 2 or 3 PPG) since Tebow took over, but their defense has jumped from giving up 28 PPG or so to close to 19 PPG (numbers are rough estimations, but should be close).

Just because your team wins, doesn’t mean that you’re a good QB… Look at Trent Dilfer after all…

by aceofsween on Dec 2, 2011 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

Furthermore...

I wish talking about Tebow was simply banned from these boards. This isn’t the Bronco’s blog, if you want to go talk about him I’m sure they would love to indulge you.

I am sick of hearing about him. I’m sick of his fanatical followers that treat him like he walks on water. I’m sick of ESPN nob-slobbing all over his nuts. And all of this is not because I hate the guy or anything…

I simply just don’t give a shit about Tim Tebow.

by aceofsween on Dec 2, 2011 2:46 AM EST up reply actions

While it's easy to point out that defense and running game

If you remember, the Broncos were like 1-4 when they had Kyle Orton in, who’s a regular type of quarterback and actually has been fairly underated his whole career. The moment Tebow stepped in, the entire team turned around.

Tebow is part of the picture

If Denver’s defense had not improved as much as it has they would not have the record that they have. They are at 20.1 points per game ( 21) 312.8 yards per game ( 25 ) 153.1 yards passing ( 31) and 159.7 yards rushing per game ( 1 ) Look at the San Diego game Denver had the ball twice and did nothing San Diego had the ball twice and lost yards both times it was the third time that Denver got the field goal to win. If the defense had not kept them in the games that they won game over. It took a while for the defense and it’s rookie to learn the new system that Fox put in now they are keeping the game close making the stops needed to allow Denver to have a chance, without the improvement of the defense Tebow and company ould not have a winning record.

As much as you hate the Tim Tebow effect on the US...

I feel terrible for the guy. Even a little bit of foresight would allow you to predict that the “media” will pounce at one slip-up off the field. It’s gonna be sad, no one deserves such over hyped glory only to have your entire life be trashed by one slip up, and you can bet some folks are waiting in the wings to not only bash Tebow’s playing ability but more so his character.

He has been hyped up by said media so much that his “media” fall is inevitable.

It seems like you’ve been a lot more hot headed and irrational the lately. You’re not alone in hating the excessive media coverage for those who really don’t deserve it. But you can’t change it. Tebow doesn’t ask for the attention, he just gets it. There are tons and tons of people who practically worship him as some sort of demigod and the media is gonna milk it for all it’s worth. I hate the Tebow talk just like you do, but it doesn’t mean I hate Tebow as a person.

And on a more general note, I think it would be in your best interest to tone it down a bit. I like you PT and you’re one of the most popular commenters on this site (for better or worse). Your rant about Tim Tebow is pretty ridiculous.

You continue to say you hate Tim Tebow all because he’s getting some deserved praise for helping Denver win football games. That’s pretty sad on your part. Cam has received more than his fair share of praise throughout this season, and will continue to do so. Heck, Cam may even get Offensive Rookie of the Year (meaning Tebow won’t). How can you not root for a guy like Tebow unless you have no conscience whatsoever? He’s a down to earth guy who just wants to win like Cam. He makes his teammates around him better because of his attitude and work ethic. You didn’t bring it up, but I hope part of it isn’t because he’s so religious because you can’t fault a guy for that. Just like any quarterback, Tebow will have his bad days in the NFL but as long as he’s winning, don’t slam the guy or people who root for him. I’ll be glad to root for him, unless he’s playing the Panthers of course. And your point may be better stated if you’d refrain from using profanity and make some sense.

sPEAK FOR YOURSELVES ON KARDASHIANS

GOES to show when you have a big ass, no talent and basically just being a bunch of whores, thats what gets you on tv. as far as tebow, panthertrain, you need to lay down and take a strees pill and quit all the hating. its not his fault the idiots put him on cover.

by oldpanther on Dec 2, 2011 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

what the hell is wrong with everybody?

Its not Tim Tebow’s fault that he is being talked about so much. He is just a guy with limited natural talent that worked his Ass off to get to the NFL. He is a he’ll of a nice guy, selfless, hard worker. I don’t understand what’s not to like. I can understand you not liking the media coverage of him so much but to pretty much be saying that you would be cheering for him to get hurt is sick. Is it jealousy that he is getting all the media attention and you wish Cam was getting it instead? I don’t know, but I just really don’t care about media coverage. I would rather have Cam winning us games under the radar than be worried about him being on the cover of magazines.

by JStewart28 on Dec 2, 2011 12:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Do you really have to ask what the hell is wrong with everybody?

Holy shit where do I start? I’ll try to help you understand… ;)

To be American —→ Lacking intelligence, having contradictory thoughts and beliefs, believing you have the highest of intelligence without any evidence, having been brainwashed to believe you are intelligent, to believe the world owes you something, to be dependent on officials and media heads to tell you how to think, to be medicated for every symptom deemed to be abnormal by doctors, to believe the collective world should believe as you do, to hate on those that are better than you, to act on your emotions without any intelligent thoughts beforehand…maybe even afterward as well, etc…

I suppose I could go on for hours…hahaha

Geez, shows you what I knew...

I thought it was all just a big government conspiracy. It was that damn Tim Tebow the whole time. Do you think we should tell those occupy people? Nah, they would prolly try to occupy his football locker or maybe the Broncos football field. Everybody would think its because Fox is a great coach and he would win coach of the year.

Nuts, you just can’t win.

Thats a bit much...

We don’t need Cam to be talked about all the time. We all know he is awesome. Tebow is doing his thing, and while he is not a conventional QB, he is winning (with the help of a pretty good D). If we get a win this week against the bucs and continue to improve the attention will swing back our way. But the reason Tebow is getting attention is because they are winning with him. You can’t hate a player for that…

Whoo!

This is LaFell’s chance to prove himself. He’s going up against a good corner cough dirty player, maniac* in Talib. Hopefully his success thus far this season hasn’t simply been due to his lining up across from inferior cornerbacks.

Is Naanee expected to play at all this week?

I also read earlier the week that Pilares was questionable as well. what’s the status of these two?

by dudemanhey on Dec 2, 2011 12:13 AM EST reply actions

Not sure... just what I heard

But Naanee wasn’t on the injured list
And Edwards was returning kicks (not sire if this is true though)

pilares

Has been struggling with a quad injury and is questionable. If he’s ae will be returning kickoff’s. Boo

Save us Pilares

by LimeyPanther on Dec 2, 2011 5:39 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

If AE returns kicks...

I hope he does the same thing that Pilares did. Then, we’ve got two guys that the kickoff team has to hope don’t get the kickoff, for fear that they could run it back. Having two dynamic KR’s back there really puts pressure on the kicking team.

As long as AE doesn't dance around on the KR, he certainly has the tools to be effective...

I was glad to see him admit as much when asked about the returns (he said something along the lines of “You have to pick a lane and go on kickoff returns; you can’t dance around waiting for one”.

Pilares didn't practice yesterday

AE is going to get the nod if Pilares is still out which looks likely.

Good call Tom. AE said he needs to run straight and not dance so much because if you pause you will get tackled. So he knows what to do, but can AE do it?

Pilares is ranked 1st in the NFC and 2nd in the NFL for kick returns. (applause) Man we needed that. Let’s see if the kid can catch and run some routes to when he’s healed.

I like the idea of giving AE a chance to return kickoffs.

Now we can see how he does when there are not 5 players of the other team there waiting for him to catch the ball.

by MrBernz on Dec 2, 2011 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Amen to that

Was going to reply directly to Tom, but I agree with this. AE has no reason to dance around on kickoff returns. It is safe to say he has to do plenty of dancing on PR, because he hardly ever has open field to work with.

I should note, the PR team has been getting better and things are starting to open up a little.

WA-HOO!

Hey, while we’re at it, go ahead and throw some time at AE and Pilares in the slot.

Can’t wait to see LaFell start! Really hope that he just locks down this position! 6 catches for 80 yards and a TD would cement him as the starter for the next game in my mind. Maybe not permanently, because he would have to earn it every week, but it would definitely buy him a week as the starter.

by jkp1516 on Dec 2, 2011 2:25 AM EST reply actions

I think it's a good thing

Now, I’m not ready to say this should be a permanent switch. LaFell needs to be able to show that he’s capable of stepping into the role by making the most of this opportunity. A good solid game with no mental errors would go a long way toward proving to me that he has what it takes to become the #2 WR on the team.

by aceofsween on Dec 2, 2011 2:47 AM EST reply actions

I think

Then we should hold Naanee to that same standard. If we did, he would have been pulled after his first play, second play, third play, etc. He had like, what, a 30% catch percentage at the first quarter mark of the season.

To me lafell has already proven himself with his percentage catch numbers (higher than wes welker and smitty) and Rivera is using the “show me something kid” as a motivational technique, which I think is a good idea, BTW albeit necessary.

If Naanee is inactive on Sunday, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod in 3 WR sets.

I’m thinking it will be AE, even if Pilares is able to go. At least that is what the depth chart would have you believe. Even so, it may be a good opportunity to see how AE is progressing as a receiver in limited duty.

Here is another way to look at this.

What would Lafell have to do to make people think he is not a #2 receiver?
I am not saying he is or isn’t. but I have seen a thousand times that he is & how he is clutch. Just curious what it will take to change that opinion.

Help

I am playing the ESPN pigskin pickem and our top guy in our group is ranked 42nd in the world. He had a 15 point lead on me about 5 games ago. I have had some good weeks only missing 4 games in the last 2 weeks. I am 5 spots behind and in second place in the group now.

Here is the dilemma: to pick the panthers or not. The bucs lost 5 straight and have an injured qb. They can’t stop our running game and we can’t stop there’s. I have Tampa right now. Cam is ify, like James mentioned. I think we should win, but Tampa is the safe pick and the smarter pick. I really think this is a coin toss which is why I went with the home team. What should I do?

I'm interested to see what Lafell does full time at the #2 spot.

I want to see him get separation on his routes. But seeing as he’ll be going up against Talib and the vested vet Barber, that may not be the case.

LaFell among NFL leading WRs in % of targeted passes caught.

Maybe this should be a new Post, but I’ll add it here.

http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/2011/nfl-targets-report.cfm?view=rising&pos=WR

Per stats found fftoolbox.com, LaFell’s been targeted 37 times, and hauled in 26 of those, for a 70.3%, and is listed on their list of Rising (getting more targets the last 3 games, than previous) receivers.

Here’s their list of the leading WRs in the league, for which his YTD targets are not yet enough to make the list.

http://www.fftoolbox.com/football/2011/nfl-targets-report.cfm?pos=WR

But… surveying both lists, I find the % leaders are:

1) 76.1% Percy Harvin
2) 72.6% Marques Colston
3) 70.7% Wes Welker
3) 70.7% Greg Jennings
5) 70.6% James Jones
6) 70.3% Brandon LaFell

As a comparison, Legedu Naanee shows up near the bottom of the overall list, at a 57.1% completion %.

This should settle once and for all which of these 2 WRs is the more productive and valuable to the Panthers, especially when one considers that LaFell has 2 TDs, to 0 for Naanee, and that he averages 15 YPR, to 10.3 for Naanee. and has gained 19 more yards, on 10 fewer catches.

They’ve brought LaFell along slowly, but now it’s time for him to break out as one of the league’s elite. In my observation, most of his 70.3% receptions have been difficult catches; it’s time he gets more easy ones thrown to him.
