CSR, get this done!

The editors of Cat Scratch Reader are missing a terrific opportunity to enhance the member’s enjoyment of this football season. The omission to which I refer is a tracking chart to show the status of both Cam Newton’s and Steve Smith’s progression towards NFL records this season. I would like to note that all are post AFL - NFL merger records.

For those readers not aware of which records are clearly within reach of this pair, let’s look at the NFL record categories being challenged …

after the jump.

Star-divide

Cam’s Prospective Records:  Cam has the potential to break several NFL records. Below I give existing records and where Cam stands in relationship to them. The records I see as legitimate targets are:

·         Passing yards/single game (Rookie)                432 – Cam Newton (9/25/2011)

·         Passing yards/season (Rookie)                       3,739 – Peyton Manning (1998)

2,393/4,786 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

·         Passing yards/game avg. (Rookie)                 233.7 – Peyton Manning (1998)

299.1/299.1 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

·         Completions (Rookie)                                        354 – Sam Bradford (2010)

       174/348 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

·         Passing touchdowns (Rookie)                             26 – Peyton Manning (1998)

           11/22 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

·         QB rushing touchdowns (Rookie)                        7 – Vince Young (2004)

             7/14 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

·         QB rushing touchdowns                                      12 – Steve Grogan (1976)

             7/14 – Cam Newton (8 games/Projected)

Smitty’s Prospective Records:  Smitty has two NFL receiving records within reach. Like above, I give the existing records and where Smitty stands in relationship to them. The records I see as legitimate targets are:

·         Receiving yards/season                                  1,848 – Jerry Rice (1995)

            1,781 – Isaac Bruce (1995)

            1,746 – Charley Hennigan (1961 - AFL)

   918/1,836 – Steve Smith (8 games/Projected)

·         100 yard Receiving games/season                     11 – Michael Irvin (1995)

    10 – (Tied) 4 players

      9 – (Tied) 12 players

5/10 – Steve Smith (8 games/Projected)

My suggestion is to put a tracking chart onto the CSR site in the left margin so fans can see the progress toward the records at a glance. What do you think, CSRers?

Don't know either but would think they could after seeing other chart/graphs they have done.

My vision is a simple horizontal bar graph. Show an outline bar for each record with a line across the bar that relates to the current record. Fill in the bar in one color (red?) until the record is reached and then continue with the bar filling in with another color (green?) to indicate the final results.

Yeah, It's a cool idea.

Steve Grogan lol. I don’t think Steve will reach 1800 yards receiving this year, and as the year progresses I think he will see more double teams. Cam has a terrific opportunity to become the best rookie QB of all time.

So we're just going to give in to his demands?

We’re setting a precedent here that members can just say “CSR, get this done!” and we do it…that’s a slippery slope I’m not sure we’re ready to go down.

(Just kidding, I think it’s a great idea.)

Thanks to both of you.

Sorry about the title, BW. Just was looking for something to get attention of the masses to see if this idea was worthwhile. I’ll not be making any more demands…except for jaime to say “Beeee Dubbbbbb!” in her fem-bot voice. :) Friends again?

If you can pull that off...

I will gladly make a donation to the GooseCreek fund. :-)

I am pretty sure he is closing in on the NFL all Time yardage total for a season

rushing yards and passing yards together… no one talks about that but that to me is beyond amazing.

by Shankdiddy on Nov 10, 2011 4:55 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, I think with guys like Newton and other mobile QBs

people overlook total yards from scrimmage. That’s just as important as passing yards. I mean, the guy moves the ball downfield. I’d like to see what percentage of the offensive yards he’s accounted for this season.

It's a staggering percentage

Cam has thrown for 2393 and rushed for 319 totalling 2711 yards
Of course, no other QB has thrown a pass.
Deangelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Steve Smith and Jerome Felton have rushed for 719 yards.

So Cam has accounted for 2711 of the Panthers 3429 yards…

A staggering 79.1%

by FF Companion on Nov 10, 2011 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Just as a comparison

Aaron Rodgers 2746/3465 for 79.2%
Drew Brees 3058/4138 for 73.9%
Mark Sanchez 1839/2550 for 72.1%
Andy Dalton 1722/2529 for 68.1 (Gradkowski did play some of game one, so not 100% accurate)

That's incredible.

Considering Aaron Rodgers doesn’t run as much, his number proves how unreal of a season he’s having.
