No matter who we draft in the 1st round it will be a STAR
I mentioned this in a comment and was actually so impressed with the reality of it that I had to post this.
Hurney has been freaking amazing with his 1st round picks. Seriously! I don't know if it's our scouting teams, the way we weed out through interview, or what, but Marty Hurney has elite talent at finding us amazing 1st rounders.
Since 2001 Hurney has hit on all of his picks (when we've had 1st rounders to use). He’s been spot on with EVERY one since Dan Morgan in the 2001 draft. Check it: Dan Morgan, Julius Peppers, Jordan Gross, Chris Gamble, Thomas Davis, Deangelo Williams, Jon Beason, Jonathan Stewart, Jeff Otah, Cam Newton. Now look at that talent.
We've hit it out of the park with each one. One of the 1st things that stands out is that out of all those picks the only 2 not on the team are Morgan and Peppers. Now obviously there are some players in there that have been consistently injury plagued during their career, but when healthy they were dominant and a force to reckoned with. Hell, just imagine if we were able to field all of these players (completely healthy -- and Morgan and Peppers some years younger to even age out) meshed with our current talent. Did your jaw just hit the floor too? Who doesn't think we'd be competing for the playoffs right now? Who doesn't think we'd one of the top NFC teams? DT problem? Not when we'd rotate to 3-4 and have those wonderful LB's playing lights out and Peppers and CJ dominating the line. Heck, Hardy could rotate at DT just to get him on the field. There wouldn't even be any talk of Dalton for ROY when we'd be in a much similar situation with one of the top D's in the league supporting our dazzling rookie QB. But I digress....
All I wanted to do was just enlighten everyone to the fact that whomever we select come draft day we need not worry about. Hurney's staff will have done all of the needed HW to insure that we once again get the right guy. I just hope that those of you who have fallen so in love with other prospects will see that this person is the right guy for us. Hurney hasn't steered us wrong in the 1st round since 2001 and I don't expect him to now. :)

Hurney Has Also Done A Fantastic Job Of Drafting O-Linemen In the 6th & 7th Rounds
Several are now on other teams roster as well.
Very true
This is why I’m fine if we don’t draft o-line in the early rounds. Plus we will be getting back gary williams (who played really well when Otah went down last year), a good guard with shwartz, and rookie zach williams. We have depth on the roster, but we’ve just had an all around injury plagued year.
This is a trend I've noticed as well.
Nice write-up.
Anyways, the front office has done a fantstic job of building the team in the first round. Another weird trend has been our awful luck with second rounders:
Dwayne Jarrett
Everette Brown
Jimmy Clausen
Armanti Edwards……..
These are just off the top of my head, but it’s certainly strange irony.

We have hit a few times in the 2nd
Deon Grant
Kris Jenkins
Richard Marshall (kinda)
Ryan Kalil
And we also get some good guys in the 3rd:
Steve Smith
Will Witherspoon
Travelle Wharton
James Anderson
4th not so much, only notable is Mike Goodson
Charles Johnson
Charles Godfry
Dan Conner
Brandon LaFell
After that the consistency drops off a lot (like all other teams)
Yes, it is a comforting thought...
However past drafting success has no assurance or bearing on future draft success.
Draft
every team has hits and misses in draft. 1st. round picks are looked at by teams as very good players or stars for next 10 years. if you start missing on these guys, it can set your team back. if that happens, coach and gm. wont be around long. In your draft, i see them taking a dt in 1st. or 2nd. round.
