Ask Bucs Nation

Greetings Panthers fans! Sad as it is to say, we're in a heated battle this year- one that extends beyond this week's game and the rematch in week 16. I refer of course to the epic battle to finish third in the NFCS- or as some of our more cynical brethren might alternatively see it, the battle for better draft position. Tampa Bay is reeling after five losses in a row, no question. Meanwhile, the Panthers have notched another win against Indy and will be looking to string together a two game winning streak for the first time this season. It's honestly hard to predict this one. Carolina has gaudy statistics in a lot of categories, particularly on offense- but only three wins. Tampa Bay looks like a contender in one week, beating the Saints and Falcons and making the Packers fight hard for a win- and then they squander a fourth quarter lead and lose to the Titans. I'm happy to answer any questions you have for Bucs fans, and if one of y'all would be good enough to set up a FanPost at Bucs Nation, we can get a good dialogue going both ways you'd like to answer questions from Bucs fans, please visit this post at Bucs Nation.

Please keep it civil, no personal attacks, and throw me a rec to keep this on top. Fire away!

Why cant the Bucs stay consistent?

They’ll have a good season then a realy off season…

Why is is so hard to hit that Blount?(This is just a joke but you can answer if you want to)

Also what is your prediction for the game? (If you dont mind me asking)

by rscott94 on Nov 29, 2011 9:10 PM EST reply actions

I wish I had a single good answer for you

There are a lot of standard excuses. The team is so young. The lockout hit us harder than other teams because of that. We’ve had a tough schedule. Etc., etc. But to most Bucs fans those excuses have been ringing hollow for a while now. Everyone expected 2009 to be the debacle it was. 2010 now looks to have been a very overinflated season in terms of results- and unfortunately, I think too many folks got an overinflated sense of their play as a result- our coaching staff included.

There was a great quote about trying to tackle Blount after the game from Titans DE Dave Ball: “It’s like trying to tackle a greased up, naked guy in the shower.”

I think the Bucs will manage the win- frankly, I think we’re hungrier for it at this point. I give you guys the advantage when we’re back in Charlotte in week 16 though.

Josh Freeman was hailed as a top 10 QB before the season started..after the year he had last year it was hard to argue but i think it is fair to say he has regressed? Explanation why?

Absolutely fair to say he's regressed

This is Free’s third season, but as he didn’t play until over halfway through the 2009 season, lots of folks are characterizing what he’s going through as a sophomore (and a half) slump. The biggest story is the interceptions. After last year’s freakish 25-6 TD-INT ratio, expectations were very high. They haven’t been met, to say the least: 12-16 is his ratio so far this year. That said, his completion percentage has improved slightly (61.8 vs. 61.4 in 2010).

Mike Williams

For the lack of a better word, how good is this guy? After a solid rookie season, he seems to have regressed along with Freeman. Is it attitide, chemistry, talent, etc?

Hard to say

Lack of an offseason to train together shows most clearly in Freeman’s rhythm with the receivers. Mike Williams has actually shown a lot of improvement in the past couple of games. I think he’s learning how to manage double coverages better. I also hope he’s had a little humility ground into him after reading too many glowing press clippings from 2010.

I don't think Ta'amu will fall that far

as he’s the best NT in the draft, and teams are always looking for NTs. He’d likely be a steal that late. I do agree with you that #15 is high for Floyd. I think he has the talent to go that high, but I haven’t really heard much about him being that high (although Walter Football has him going 16th to the Bils).

Spurlock's not even our #5 receiver

Rejus Benn is #2, with Briscoe and Parker next. I could see us taking a WR in the 3rd or later, but I think a change of pace running back is a higher priority.

I think he'd fit in there

But Damian Williams is starting to come on, and they’ll have Britt back next year. However, having Britt, Washington, Floyd, and Williams would be quite the arsenal for Locker whenever he takes over. And if he doesn’t go there, there are several teams with WR as a need in the mid-late 1st round.

Gamble's been a lockdown corner

I don’t feel like digging through stats, but it’s seemed that whoever Gamble has covered this year has been a virtual non factor that game.

But Claiborne is a popular pick among mock drafts around here because our #2 CB play has been inconsistent at best.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 29, 2011 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

This is why I want Hogan to get some experience this year.

Before he was injured, he was revered as a CB prospect. He has unquestionable talent, and I’d hate to waste a pick we could be using on a LB, so we could look at safeties and DT’s earlier on than expected. I like Claiborne, but I think there’s too much risk in taking him if we could potentially have a great CB on the team now. We can always take a corner in the latter round J.I.C.

by RonnieHawkins97 on Nov 29, 2011 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

Sounds familiar to our situation

Barber’s great but limited and retiring. Talib’s excellent when he can keep his head on straight, but that’s not often enough- plus he’ll be midtrial while the draft is occurring. Everyone else is undersized, a “developmental project”. or a bust.

by RonnieHawkins97 on Nov 29, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know much about him

I hope he can get in at least a game or two so we can see if he plays like he belongs out there. If he looks like he has potential, we might be able to pass on CBs in the draft. If we don’t get to see him in action this year we might have to add help at CB to be safe and take Hogan living up to his potential as a bonus. If we bank on Hogan being our #2 we could end up in the same situation next year that we are in now if he busts or re-injures his knee.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 29, 2011 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

f we rely on Hogan next year

at worst we would be where we are right now, and right now we aren’t doing that bad. Munnerlynn may not be the best but if he didn’t have to worry so much about the run plays he would probably be in better position most plays.

weapons?

What do you see as your biggest weapons to use against us? Are you going to try and run like everyone else has, or will you try and see if Freeman can get past our CB’s?

Dear Baby Jesus in your golden diaper..thank you for making the number 89. Amen.

by Saul Good on Nov 29, 2011 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Blount is our first best weapon

We’re at our best when we stick to a run-first offense where Blount pound the defense until Freeman has the opportunity to make a couple of good passes off play action. We break down when we get forced to throw constantly. A good metric to assess how a Bucs game is going that’s used frequently at Bucs Nation is the pass/run ratio. If it’s fairly close to even, we’re having a good game. If it skyrockets to 2:1 or higher, a Greg Olson induced meltdown looks to be in progress.

Also, keep an eye on our slot receiver Preston Parker- he’s really emerged as a weapon this season- our most pleasant surprise on offense.

It's basically been our gameplan for every game this year.

Unfortunately (not for you guys) the leads haven’t always been big enough. I think our proudest moment this year was week 2, when we had the Packers down 13-0 in the first quarter.

I was gonna

say keep an on eye on Rejus Benn. With you guys lacking a solid #2 CB and with us getting back to the run in the last few weeks…..Benn has seen the field more and holds a solid 15+ yards per catch. Of course, if Benn is contained and they shade a safety over/or the #2 CB holds him in check…..Parker and Winslow should see plenty of targets in the middle.

Although the whole “strength of schedule” argument is a little trickier when you’re comparing with a division rival- after all, we have 12 games with common opponents in any given year. I still think that the Panthers will take enough from this game to make adjustments and take away a win in week 16.

by scatterbrain on Nov 29, 2011 9:52 PM EST reply actions

Abysmally on both counts, usually

Until last week, I held out hope that our #30 ranked run defense was overdeflated by having played so many of the top RBs in the league during the first half of the season (BArian FosTate, Frank Gore, AP, Forte, etc.). Last week smashed that illusion. Against the rest of the league, CJ looked washed up. Against the Bucs, he ran for 190 yards. FML.

As for our secondary, the Packers destroyed us by playing spread offense and forcing us to use four and five corner sets. Talib is very good until he loses his temper and costs us 15 yards. Barber is very skilled but slower (the man’s 36 after all). Elbert Mack is good, but underutilized (probably because everyone’s so astounded he’s good this year). Biggers….tries- but he’s usually matched with the #2 receiver, and he’s really a nickelback. The less said about Myron Lewis, the better.

Glad to be here, thanks for being so cordial!

Our D just drips off guys like Blount

dude knows how to run through a tackle, gotta say I love his style. He’s no J-Stew, but he could be. Run D is going to be key in this one. I know our D has been awful, but at least from looking at the stats so has yours, so maybe it’ll be a shootout and I’ll give the edge to Cam if it is. Both rush Ds look bad, both give up the same 4.8 per carry, but Tampa’s pass D has been porous too, adds up to 394 yards per game allowed (Car averages 398 on O) and makes me think Cam may be able to move the ball at will. Of course any given Sunday stats don’t mean anything, but on paper I think the Panthers have an edge (and of course I’m a homer so I’ll pick them.) No matter who wins there will probably be a lot of bad tacking, Tampa leads the league in missed tackles and the Panthers are a close third.

It will be interesting to see how often Free scrambles in this one- he’s beginning to utilize that part of his game again, after shying away from it in the beginning of the season.

honestly doesn't look good for either defense.

has Freeman been as clutch in the 4th as he was last year? I could easily see this one being a 3 point game going into the 4th and then getting blown open by a couple big plays on tired defenses. I’m glad I don’t bet on football, this one would probably give me a heart attack.

At times yes, at times no

We killed ourselves in the 4th against the Packers with that moronic second onside kick (when the five year old kids in the bleeder seats could tell it was coming). And we let the game against the Titans slip away with 13 unanswered points in the 4th last week. So lately, no.

The injury happened over the bye week

So whatever it was, it had no role in his shakiness in the first half of the season. He’s had more good games since he’s had it, so who knows- maybe it reminded him of his thumb injury in 2010 and subconsciously got him back in that form.

Despite your the Bucs ranking on defense i dont buy they have a worst D than us. Our D is so horrid its not even funny. Infact im shocked we arent ranked 32 in defense. Because of our defense the Colts almost got their 1st win and let Curtis Painter move down field at will.

Our D is Lebron James in the 4th quarter. (im actually a Lebron fan haha) but anyway, its true. I have never seen so much choking in the 4th quarter like our D does, it is absolutly atrocious. Infact when the game is on the line in the 4th quarter, almost every single QB we play will have a 100% completion rate on the last drive against us.

Panthers D is worse in the stat that matters the most, points allowed per game, although Tampa is only 1.2 behind. They really are almost equally terrible in most areas, could make for an interesting game

So in other words the score prediction will be.. 76-73 Bucs with the game winning field goal lol

The defense will be solid, once healthy and additions to interior.

Beason is the heart of the D, and without him there, the defense is abysmal, atrocious, confused, and frustrated.

Beason is a beast

I know that a lot of Bucs fans would love us to try and go after him in FA. But they forget our current FA policy:" Only Punters and In-Season Replacements, Please. We’re Rebuilding Through the Draft- Even If It Kills Us."

Ah well- I’ll shift focus to petitioning for Anthony Spencer as our FA LB signing. And drink bitter, bitter tears when we sign no one but a longsnapper, and offer him a $70 million 5 year contract.

But then again we’ve managed two very solid 4th quarter chokes in the past two weeks. And normally, that’s when we finally wake up and remember we’re supposed to be playing a football game after dozing through the first three.

I would not say we let Curtis Painter move downfield at will. not by a long shot.

Reggie Wayne made a couple guys miss, and then Sherrod Martin just laid down as he ran past him. That wasn’t Painter, that was Wayne. That was also the only pass play of real consequence.

Business as usual. We let Donald Brown rush for 80 and a TD.

How much will Haynesworth contribute? How much HAS he contributed?

by RonnieHawkins97 on Nov 29, 2011 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Haynesworth has been a bargain

and remarkably, he hasn’t run his mouth too badly except for talking about wanting to be a “role model” to the young guys (to the eye-rolling of all) and causing a drastic spike in our catering bills. He’s performed pretty solidly on the field and has really helped to plug the hole left by GMC’s injury. The biggest knock on him is a very familiar one- he’s slow to get up once he’s down, and he’s slow in pursuit after his initial burst.

Questions about two players.

Are Kellen Winslow’s injuries and age catching up to him? Drafted him in FF and cut him fairly quickly. And, is Da’Quan Bowers looking like another Clemson DE bust for y’all? (No disrespect meant towards Gaines Adams)

Ironically, Gaines was Da'Quan's mentor

K2 is a prima donna- he’s a key receiver, but he’s lost a step. Most of Free’s interceptions have come on throws to K2 because Free uses him as a security blanket. Unfortunately, Luke Stocker has been invisible so far this year- so K2 is still our best option.

Da’Quan hasn’t seen enough snaps by far to be judged a bust yet- Michael Bennett’s been starting all year, and Bowers has only gotten the start since then- so far he looks superb in pass rushing and pressuring, but more questionable against the run.

"Rock Takes You", With Blount's Lack Of Receiving Ability, Do You Think The Bucs Might Like To Trade For The Panthers RB Mike Goodson This Offseason?

RB Mike Goodson (6-0, 212, 4.43-40) had 40 catches (7.8 YPC), ran for 452 yards (on 103 carries, a 4.4 YPC), and scored on a kick return in 2010. He just couldn’t find any carries behind Williams, Stewart, and Newton this season. He’s on IR, but only with a strained hamstring. He could be the perfect fit as Blount’s backup.

What do you think the Bucs might give for Goodson?

by PanthersRoar on Nov 29, 2011 11:38 PM EST reply actions

I don't even see the Bucs trading even division, they're too caught up in hype for that.

Think it's likelier that we'll draft an RB in the 3rd or 5th round

and I doubt that the Bucs will let Blount go regardless. BTW, he’s actually flashed some receiving skills this year. It’s our…brilliant OC who keeps him out on third downs. And it’s Rook, not Rock.

Agreed

Actually on the few (and I mean FEW) pass plays that Blount has been involved in…I believe he avg over 10 yards a catch. He even took one for 56 in pre-season. We’ve been screaming for him on 3rd downs over the “MVP” Kregg Lumpkin. (Obviously “MVP” is a joke someone threw around last week…and I think we established it stands for "Most Valuable P*ssy).

They got rebranded in 1999, along with the rest of the organization- that was when we made the transition from creamsicle to pewter and red and Buccaneer Bruce sashayed away to the great retirement pirate ship.

Doubt it- though our whole TEAM has sucked at tackling this year

Ronde has a lot of tricks left in him. He doesn’t have elite speed anymore, but his method is sickly effective. Don’t let one stiff arm fool you into discounting him- that’s just what he wants.

Curious

How is the acquisition of Albert Haynesworth working out for the Bucs? Or is it? Given that this is his third team in a little under two years (which makes me wonder if maybe he’s trying for a Randy Moss type of season, bouncing around half the NFL), I have to admit I’m interested to see if it’s more of the same from his Redskins days, or if he actually has turned over a new leaf, or what exactly the deal is?

speaking of DTs, whats up with McCoy

he was supposed to be your Suh but he cant stay on the field. are you guys concerned about his health and how is he when healthy. In the past 2 years you have spent 2 1st and 2 2nd rounders on the D-Line, how do you like that strategy?

by pcroadrage on Dec 1, 2011 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

McCoy is the core of our defense- when he's healthy

Injuries happen, but it’s troubling that he’s had two season-ending ones in back to back seasons. If he doesn’t play a full season (or close to it) next year, the scrutiny about his long term viability will begin in earnest. But when he’s healthy, he’s great. Our run defense only started to suck after he went out. I actually prefer him to Suh- he’s better in run coverage and he has much more even keel.

I liked that Dominik was willing to invest that much in the D-line. It needed a massive rehabilitation in 2009, and the starting personnel we have now have the potential to be with us fr the long term. Within a few seasons, I think our D-line will be considered one of the elite ones in the league.

He's working out pretty well

Bear in mind, he’s a backup. But he’s done well so far, except for being slow to get up after he’s down. I think he realizes that Tampa is likely his last chance, and if he doesn’t play nicely with others here his career will be over.

Ours.

Not ONE DT on our team knows the meaning of “Gap Control” which is essential in a Tampa 2 based D. Granted we don’t run much of the Traditional Tampa 2 the DLs still need to maintain their gaps. Quincy Black like to hang 5 yards downfield waiting for an OL to pick him up so he can make it look he was blocked when in reality he was sitting back counting his money from the new contract he recieved in the offseason. Talib will run NEXT to the player with the ball randomly be taken out of the play by one of our other players? Tanard Jackson somewhat gets a pass since being brought in mid-season without playing in 56 games. Although if we are being honest…..his tackling and angles of pursuit are just plain awful. Even when he had a chance at a clean sack he flopped off of the QB as if he was made of butter. (I think it was Brees). Our best “sure” tackler has been Ronde Barber….and if you scroll up….I think that about sums up the play of our Defense. With the exception of the occasional “splash plays” like Talibs INT for a TD (2wice), T-Jack with a few INTs and Clayborn with 5 sacks…we haven’t had many positive plays if any from the Defense. Definately not the TB Defense of old.

Clayborn

has been a bright spot. I like his play on the pass rush. However, he has been caught out of position on the rushing end of things. Over pursuing on the back end/getting caught out of his gaps. I assume that is more contributed to being a rookie though…and with Bennett sitting out of practice again today I think we will see more from Bowers.

So what's going on with Freeman?

Reports are that he’s not practicing this week and may not even know if he’ll play til Saturday. Is there cause for concern here?

He injured

his throwing shoulder on the last play of the game last week. We are preparing JJ as if he is the starter this week….and watching JJs interview today after practice….It sounded like he might actually start. As for a long-term concern…the injury isn’t so much a worry as his play on the field has been this year.
