My Daily Thoughts

  • Panthers starting S Sherrod Martin cannot tackle to save his life. His embarrassing attempt to bring down Colts WR Reggie Wayne allowed the opposition to cut the lead to 24-19 with a little over 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. I honestly believe I could have at least made a better attempt. Missed tackles like this have been a trend all season for Martin. Luckily he redeemed himself with a game-sealing interception in the end-zone on Indy’s final drive of the game, but he may need more plays like that the rest of the season to keep his starting position going into 2012.
  • Although random, I feel like my flag football team’s season is all too similar to the 2011 Panthers. I doubt anyone wants to hear all the boring details about some team no one cares about, but we are 2-5 with most close, heart-breaking losses. In one game we were down 24-0, only to come back and tie up the game 24-24 with under a minute. Then on their first play on the next drive they throw a 60 yard touchdown. Reminds me too much of the game versus the Saints in which the Panthers started down 13-0 only to fight back, take the lead, and ultimately lose the game on the final possession. Another game we were up 11-6, running out the clock and punted the ball away with less than a minute. We lazily ran down the field to cover the punt, and an extremely poor man’s Patrick Peterson/Devin Hester hybrid returned the punt for a game winning touchdown. Makes me wonder why we just did not punt the ball out of bounds, then I realized that if the Panthers want to give the Cardinals and the Bears a chance to win, then we might as well too. We also had our midseason drubbing 12-36 loss (Tennessee Titans). The only vast difference is that our offense struggles to move the ball but we play shut-down defense. Our season finale is tomorrow night against the number 1 team in the league, but it’s not like you guys care.
  • After great performances against Tennessee and at Detroit, where was DE Thomas Keiser yesterday?
  • I still feel like OT will be a position of need entering the 2012 Draft. The Colts pass rush was getting fairly consistent pressure all day, but they should be with DE’s Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney. If you did not read my write-up on the effects of the Jeff Otah and Thomas Davis injuries, you can find it here. It would make complete sense to have a franchise tackle at roughly the same age as Cam Newton, that way you can solidify two of the most important positions in the game for the next 10-15 years.
  • I find it strange that the Panthers carry 7 WR’s on their roster. Last week the team signed WR Darvin Adams from the practice squad and cut FB Jerome Felton. The team clearly likes what they see in FB Richie Brockel, but carrying 7 WR’s when only 3 of them see the field on offense? Adams was inactive, I have hardly heard Seyi Ajirotutu’s name called on special teams all year, Armanti Edwards returns punts and Kealoha Pilares returns kickoffs. You could honestly use one player to return both kicks (sorry Armanti) and free up another spot at LB or S.
  • I have been a fan of LB Jordan Senn ever since he has become a Panther. It's good to see him contribute on defense with great intensity and drive. He is not going to be a regular contributor on defense in the long-term, but this is a guy we should make sure to keep around.
  • How many wins does Cam Newton need to lock up Offensive Rookie of the Year? Cincinnati's Andy Dalton has been getting more attention of late because the Bengals are 7-4, however they are winning with a good defense and a favorable early schedule. Newton's passing and rushing statistics trump those of Dalton's, but how will the voters weight the most important statistic of them all: wins.
