Panthers Pick Off Colts in 27-19 Win

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - NOVEMBER 27 Robert Mathis #98 of the Indianapolis Colts sacks Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 27, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Scott Boehm/Getty Images)

The third quarter has not been kind to the Panthers this season. Whether leading or trailing at the half things tend to get worse in the 3rd quarter. So today maybe it was a good sign they were tied at 10 at the half. After driving down to the red zone early in the 3rd it seemed like more of the same after a Jeremy Shockey fumble. Fortunately the Panther ground game got rolling and DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart helped put the Colts away. It wasn't without some 4th quarter worries though.

After going up by 11 the Colts scored on a long TD to Reggie Wayne to pull within 5 after a failed 2 pt conversion. Fortunately KR Kealoha Pilares did some good work returning the kickoff down to the Colts 32. The Panthers settled for a FG but it pushed the lead to 8 and the Panthers didn't look back. CB Chris Gamble and then S Sherrod Martin ended the Colts last two comeback attempts with INTs in the end zone. It was another nail biter but we got our 3rd win of the season to rise to 3-8.

The Good

  • QB Cam Newton was 20 for 27 for 208 yards with one rushing TD and 54 yards rushing
  • RB DeAngelo Williams racked 69 yards and 2 TDs on 15 carries
  • RB Jonathan Stewart added 70 yards on 10 carries
  • KR Kealoha Pilares had a 76 yard kick return to set the Panthers up at the Colts 32
  • Both CB Chris Gamble and then S Sherrod Martin had key INTs in the 4th quarter to end a Colts threats. The last came with only 30 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The Almost Great

  • PR Armanti Edwards had a beautiful 45 yard return nullified by a penalty
  • WR Steve Smith had a sweet reception taken away on a ticky tack OPI call

It wasn't all roses as we had a few issues but over all its positive...after the jump...

Star-divide

The Bad

  • The Panthers run defense continued its porous ways letting Donald Brown rush for 80 yards and a TD
  • TE Jeremy Shockey fumbled the ball away
  • WR Reggie Wayne was the recipient of some generosity from our secondary who at times couldn't tackle him. He had 5 catches fro 122 yards and a TD
  • The Panthers o-line gave up 3 sacks and at times seemed to have lunch in the Panthers backfield.
So how do you feel about this one Panther fans? Was it a good enough win to keep you happy.

Panthers went from last to Top 5 in offense in one partial off-season

If they can do that on the defensive side this year, Carolina will be a dominate team for a decade +

Go Panthers, good win today.

Its dominant! I’ve seen it at least 4-5 times on here and its bugs me. No offense plz but I had to easy something this time.

I nominate Martin to represent us on Dancing With the Stars

He needed to make that play, to get the bad taste out of game watchers’ mouths, after that HORRIBLE example of a missed tackle on Wayne, giving up a TD.

That boy just can’t wrap up.

That criticism aside, it was a sweet play, to grab the tipped ball, and keep his toes off the back EZ line. Sure felt like we were going to find a way to let them tie it up.

Generally speaking, Martin screws up way to much…but that INT was awesome and clutch.

Because they will rest their starters. ATL will be out of it after they lose to us and to N.O. Leinert got hurt today, not to sure what Houston’s qb status will be, but putting in the 3rd qb in the season can’t be good. Little time to prepare. Atlanta will lose to us and NO and Chicago will lose to GB, but both teams will win out the remaining games, which means Chicago will get the wild card, not Atlanta. and that means we go 8-8…it’s the perfect storm.

Dalton wont win ROY, Cam will hands down. Just like Pat Y says, Cam’s a lock. On this game, I will say im more happy that we didnt lose. Feel kind if meh by this game, a W is always good but I was hoping for atleast a double digit win.

Looks like the Rams lost to the Cards at home. Yea they wont win another game, unfortunatley since we have the hardest schedule we will get hit come draft day and might fall to the 7th or 8th pick becausecI think there is going to be a lot of 2-14/3-13 teams come the end of the season.

As am I, that would be one way to explain. It is the reason he caught so much crap out of college. As for records, PP7 just tied the NFL record for punt return td in a season at 4. It is not a lock. Should he win it, hell yes he should, will he win it, depends on voters moods that day.

As the great philosopher Yoda said "Try not! Do you must!"

by gdhood on Nov 27, 2011 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

PP7 is not a factor for ROY.

4 plays does not a season make.

It’s only Dalton and Von Miller that have a chance to beat Newton for that award.

That's true for the AP ROY awards - 2 separate categories.

While I’m sure neither one of us is considering this, there has been another award, The Pepsi ROY, which Suh won last year – it’s voted on by fans, from a list of 5 finalists of their weekly awards.

But after looking into it, I know you’re absolutely right, and Von Miller is probably a shoe-in for the DROY, with only minimal competition from Dalton, and possibly Dallas’ Murray, for Newton, for ROY.

by bigdavis on Nov 28, 2011 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i was talking on the AP awards. But i get where you was coming from. I think Miller and Cam have it locked. I mean Cam is going to break Manning’s passing record for a rookie and break the all time Rushing TD record. One of 5 records NFL.com said would never be broken. I fail to see how what Dalton is doing is more impressive considering it being a individual award.

A win is a win but we almost gave another one away to the 2011 Colts of all teams. The Bucs lost again today so I don’t know if that put’s a chip on their shoulder or exposes an opening for Carolina. After that 20 yard sack against Cam (which he should've thrown out of bounds), the O-line seemed to give him all the time he needed rest of the game...

I LOVED our running attack in this game; this is what we need more of (I know, it’s the Colts we’re talking about, but our blocking was looking pretty good for the most part). I just wish they could practice tackling more throughout the season, because piss poor tackling was the biggest reason Indy was even in this game…

My biggest complaint was he doesn’t try to return it when it’s deep. check this out, I like it.

Yeah, you cant let the kicker tackle you, let alone CATCH YOU FROM BEHIND.

No offense to Pilares or anything, but the blocking on that KR was perfect. Anyone in the league could have taken that return that far, someone faster would have scored.

It's time BAMF conducted a tackling clinic.

He should bring in some of his friends from the ’85 Bears team on a Monday afternoon. They can slap the kids around for a couple of hours and show them what it takes to reach the top.
Seriously, an old Navy tradition was “Ropeyarn Sunday”. It was actually Wednesday afternoon. It was a few hours off regular duties to catch up on all the training and maintenance deficiencies that had been noticed in previous drills. An afternoon or two THIS season, dedicated to tackling would benefit the Panthers defense.
Sometimes receivers need to be re-taught to “look the ball” into their hands. They spend a few hours a week with the JUGS machine. Tackling is no different.

See it's funny 'cos the guys that make it to the NFL tend to be extremely gifted athletically.

And of course that shows at a young age.

In ‘soccer’ though the ones that make it are no quicker or stronger than your average person (assuming they’re in shape!), but their ball control is generally out of this world. I’ve played with a few academy rejects (i.e. taken on as promising youngsters but released because they’re not considered good enough to make the grade) who were just streets ahead of everyone else on the pitch. It’s pretty humbling.

That is funny, I didn’t really know that, as a typical American I don’t really follow “soccer.” Even though I did play a bit as a youngster. I guess it’s the fact that you don’t have to be physically dominant in soccer, but must have great coordination and endurance.

Oh God the Broncos won. I use to like Tebow but now I’m starting to loathe him. No I’m not hater, it’s the fact that the media thinks he is god and never mentions the fact that Denver having a good D might have a little something to do with the wins.

by PantherTrain on Nov 27, 2011 8:21 PM EST via mobile reply actions

You mean mostly

Skip B who true him as if he is a god. Making excuses for him when Tebow has horrible games etc.

by adam carter on Nov 27, 2011 8:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

My thoughts exactly

I like the guy, but it’s ridiculous how he has all this praise heaped upon him. The Broncos win “in spite of” Tebow not “because of Tebow.”

by JDeLong42 on Nov 27, 2011 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

No they win because of Tebow

I dont care what anyone says they would not be winning without Tebow’s ability to run and his playmaking ability.

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 27, 2011 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

They win because they're averaging 200 rushing yards per game with Tebow under centre.

That allows your D to rest up and tires out the other team. Is it any wonder he drives down the field in the 4th Q when they run it 40 times a game?

"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury

by OldhamA on Nov 27, 2011 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Outside of the Raiders game

They haven’t scored more than 18 points in any game with Tebow. The only reason they had a chance to march up the field on the Jets last week was because the Jets handed them 10 points. Sanchez threw a pick 6 and their FG was a result of starting on the Jets 34 after a 13 yard punt. The D has given up 20 ppg (15 if you take out the Lions game) since Tebow stepped in. The team around him is playing well. Tebow is not.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 27, 2011 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

He's not turning the ball over. That's huge.

The Broncos have been absolutely atrocious on 3rd downs.

I dont know what games you are watching

Iv watched like every Broncos game and the Broncos would suck without Tebow. Im not trying to be rude but I dont think you know what your talking about. Tebow passing has not been great but his running has and he delivers good passes when it counts in the 4th quarter, thats why they call it “Tebow Time”

Its because before him they didnt win

And with him they are. He is the only factor that changed after that 1-4 start. I mean explain that to me?

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 27, 2011 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

He is a game changer because teams are scared to death of him

When the ball is snapped you dont know what he will do. Hw gives the Broncos offense so many options and makes D’s have to gues if he will run it or throw it orhand it off. If he is not a game chnger and if the Broncos are winning on their own will someone please tell me why they were 1-4 before Tebow and now they have gone 5-1 and contending for the playoffs, can you explain why the Broncos werent winning on their own then? I dont mean to get too passionate about a player that is not a Panthers and I promise I get like this when anyone bashes Cam but I like Tebow and I get tired of how people treat the dude, its not his fault the media is always covering him.

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 27, 2011 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I've watched what has been aired on TWC

And I watched the whole Jets game. I know he’s clutch. I know he can run. I’m not denying that. But since he’s been in, they’ve relied heavily on the run and it’s payed off. Like I said above, they aren’t scoring much but the D keeps them in the game until “Tebow Time.”

For example, the first 4 Bronco drives today ended in punts. They finally got a TD on their fifth drive to make the score 10-7. After 2 more punts, the Broncos moved the ball 57 yards in 10 plays (1 completed pass; Tebow accounts for 22 yards) and kicked a field goal. Then another punt. Finally, with 5 1/2 minutes left Tebow put together a great drive in crunchtime in which Tebow was fantastic. Then, in overtime, the first 2 Bronco drives ended in punts before they kicked the game-winning field goal.

9 of the Broncos’ 13 possessions ended in punts. 2 of the 4 scoring drives started past the Denver 40 yard line.

Sorry for the game summary.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 27, 2011 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Im not trying to say he is great

Im not even saying he is a franchise QB but the fact is since he has been starting they are winning and they werent before him. I know it isnt pretty but at the end of the day it doesnt really matter if he wins.

Surely it's 'defend'.

Dan Foute was using the word ‘defence’ in that exact context today throughout the Broncos game. It was driving me insane. Much like ‘dominate’ instead of ‘dominant’ and ‘defenced’

Tough being English I guess.

by OldhamA on Nov 28, 2011 12:15 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

You're correct that strict usage would have defend as a verb, and defense as a noun.

But in the colloquial vernacular, esp. in sports, defense has gained usage as a verb, too.

Your use on an American blog of the word defence (strictly a British variation) is incorrect, however, just as if you’d sworn on your honour. Do as the Romans do.

Since you’re now self-admittedly insane, I’ll grant you passes for not beginning your last sentence with “It’s,” and for your omittance of the comma needed between ‘English’ and ’I."

Seek help before parsing the language with me again. I majored in English Lit at Columbia U. Oh, and I think Mr. Fouts would be driven insane himself, by your misspelling of his surname.

It MUST be tough being English.

They have an all world QB in a passing league

They used to have some special players on D, before the PI rules changed (or the emphasis changed, whatever). Now they get by on smoke and mirrors.

So yes most of it is the HC quite simply being a genius, but they still have a lot of good players. Those two TEs for example are pretty special.

CAM moves closer to ROY

I didn’t know this until the game, but he’s the first ever QB to pass for 3,000 yards in his first 10 games. He needs about 700 yds to break Manning’s record. He’s only 2 rushing TDs from Grogan’s 35 year old record for rushing TDs by a QB. His QB rating is higher than Dalton. He’s less than 100 yards from VY’s rookie record for yards by a QB. But here’s the difference…I fully expect him to play better down the stretch than he has up to this point.

by usana_gaines on Nov 27, 2011 8:53 PM EST reply actions

I dunno dude, over the last 3 weeks Cam has averaged 233 passing yards per game.

And the last time he went over 300 yards passing was against the Bears in week 3. I think Cam is slowing down, almost as if he has hit a mini rookie wall, except it’s only a speed bump.

All rookies hit a wall after week 10.

Both mentally and physically they’re exhausted. Mainly because the college season is winding down now whereas the NFL season is in mid flow. They’re not conditioned for it.

Exactly, I'm just saying that I don't see any more 350 yds. 3 TD games this year.

I don’t think Cam has to win the game on his own anymore, now that the running game is firing on all cylinders and the WR’s and TE’s are more familiar with the offense.

"My mom used to always say, If your hungry, go eat. If you can't breath, breath. I wanna win, so if I don't win, I'm going to pitch a fit." -Cam Newton

by Son of a Newton on Nov 27, 2011 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

I can see that

But I think he’s gonna play better in terms of better decision making. I think today was an example as he didn’t have any turnovers. He held the ball too long on a couple sacks, but I think that will get corrected. I mean, if I can see it from my seat, Cam probably knows he made a couple mistakes, too. He’s also throwing for fewer yards because we’ve been running more. So I think he’ll be more efficient down the stretch with fewer mistakes, and more clutch plays.

by usana_gaines on Nov 27, 2011 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

+1, I think decision making is going to be a place of focus for Cam, Chudz and Shula this week.
