Happy Thanksgiving! Oh, BTW you've been waived
Pffft... who needs a fullback anyway?
Today the Carolina Panthers announced they have waived FB Jerome Felton and signed WR Darvin Adams from the practice squad. If you've heard me speak about Adams on CSR Radio then this should come as no surprise as he has been making huge waves internally with the organization extremely excited by what they've seen out of the 6'3" receiver. Adams was Cam Newton's former #1 receiver at Auburn.
I believe the cutting of Felton is attributed to three major factors: Firstly, the running backs haven't been looking any better with a fullback in to lead block for them, secondly when needed Richie Brockel has done the job well and thirdly Jonathan Stewart is catching better out of the backfield than expected, which diminishes the need for a receiving back.
Adams will add to the Panthers immediately on special teams, and it will be very curious to see if he is used as a PR at all. Last season for Auburn he won the job with assistant coach Trooper Taylor saying
The biggest deal is Darvin does a good job picking the ball up off the guy's foot [...] I think because of so much time on offense he makes good decisions with the ball.
Time will tell, but its curious timing to say the least.

I saw this a little while ago
I questioned at the time if they added him for depth since it looks like “LA” is going to be out this weekend. But hey if they are just adding him because he is turning heads that’s even better!
Catches Bullets With His Teeth?
I'm excited to see what he brings to the table.
Maybe he will leapfrog Pilares and Edwards on the WR Depth Chart.

I'm not that excited...
Plus he won’t leapfrog Pilares. Maybe Edwards.

id say step over Edwards…not much of a leap. Him and Cam have a good connection..id love to see him get some run as #3 WR this week with LA out

I'd like to see Edwards, Pilares and Adams at No.3 this week.
And don’t forget, Adams still has to pass Alphabet Soup.
id like to see all 4 get some run with Cam…Look at Dallas they have a WR come off the bench every year it seems a light it up..you do not know the talent you got into you get them into game. You can only evaluate so much in practice.

Haha. I was watching David Gettis highlights from last year and Gettis does a superman also when he scored a TD against the 9ers

I liked Fulton.... but I guess it is what it is
Imo
WR 1: Smitty, Pilares, Edwards
WR 2: LaFell, Adams, TuTu
(Even though I would like to see Edwards and Pilares in the slot I’ll start Adams over him)

Or just switch TuTu and Adams

I think injury issues did him in more than anything with us...
I remember someone posting up the actual numbers when Fiammetta was in vs. when he was injured, and our running game was averaging almost a yard and a half more per carry when he was in the lineup, so I gotta think it was the injury issues he was running into (concussion being a big one) that cost him a spot on our roster. Too bad he had to end up with the Cowgirls…

Is there a reason why Adams hasn’t been on the field? It seems like common sense since he was Cam’s number 1 go to guy at Auburn
by PantherTrain on Nov 25, 2011 8:28 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Yea but he had great stats last year at auburn. Also looked solid on some vids i just watched, dude should be competing for the no 3 spot
by PantherTrain on Nov 25, 2011 9:02 PM EST up reply actions
He doesn't have reliable hands.
His stats weren’t all that great at Auburn either. He just has impressive athleticism and is a big play threat. You can’t honestly think he is on LaFell or Legadu’s level.

Here's a pretty good composite of scouting reports...
Darvin Adams Basically, de boy juss too skinny; Bojangle’s diet should fix that.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
According to RR on panthers.com....
Ajirotutu and Edwards will rotate at the #3 WR, rotating in the “11 package”. I do want to see Pilares line up in the slot a few times, Armanti as well. Not sure if Adams will have much of a role outside of special teams against the Colts. Hopefully we’ll get out to a big lead, so guys like Pillares and Adams can get some time in the offense live.

Yea thats why i have changed my stance on us drafting a WR. I didnt realize how stacked we are at WR. Smitty, Lafell, Gettis, Pilares, Nannee, Edwards, Tutu and Adams. My god, how many WRs does one team need lol.
Lots of players =/= stacked
We will likely need WR help at some point in the near future. It’s just probably not of 1st round draft pick priority right now.
Gettis and Lafell are both potential franchise WRs a d either one could be future No 1 WR
by PantherTrain on Nov 25, 2011 10:59 PM EST up reply actions
I don't know if LaFell can be a #1
He already struggles at times to get separation playing as the #3 WR. I can’t see him consistently getting open against teams’ #1 corners. I don’t know about Gettis though. We’ll have to see how he comes back from his knee injury. I could be wrong and they could both develop into a nice 1-2 punch at WR, but I think it’s more likely we’ll need to go elsewhere to upgrade the WR position in the next couple years.

LaFell is a solid #2
He’s to slow to be number 1. He reminds me a lot of Moose the way he makes plays. The Gettis injury scares me aswell I hope he comes back strong, would love to see him in this offense
by rscott94 on Nov 25, 2011 11:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That's exactly what I'm saying about LaFell
I’m not saying he can’t be a solid WR, but he’s probably a #2 at best. It’s hard to judge Gettis based on the erratic QB play last year and we don’t know how he’ll respond to the injury. I hope Gettis comes back 100% because I think this offense is great for him. But I honestly can’t see Gettis, LaFell,Pilares and Edwards as a very solid WR corps when Smitty finally decides to hang it up.
Yeah
When Smitty hangs up the cleats I believe we won’t be the same for awhile… Hopefully Smitty mentors Pilares to get his attitude and skills then we’ll have Smitty 2.0 (I doubt he’ll be anything like Smitty but there’s a possibility)
by rscott94 on Nov 25, 2011 11:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That scares me to be honest
When I see Gettis back and see Edwards and Pilares get more playing time I’d feel more comfortable
Yes we do even if Shockey doesn’t resign we have Barnidge

Gettis, Edwards & Pilares
All have the speed to be a deep threat. Edwards showed in the preseason (granted against mostly backups) that he could consistently get open but couldn’t make the catches through traffic. Gettis apparently wasn’t impressing very much in the preseason before he was injured. Pilares hasn’t really been given much of a chance but definitely has some upside and is also still learning the ins and outs of being a WR.
The point? Between those 3 guys I’m optimistic that someone rises up and becomes a clutch player. They just have to have the work ethic and put in the time. They have the potential.

I think the problem with that is
that draft day will happen before we know if he will come back healthy
We were surprised to see the Panthers even keep a FB at the start of the season
I am surprised to see Tony F do so well in Dallas…maybe it was simply the way he was being used? Maybe better players around him? ;) naaah
This could also be more of added attempts at improving special teams
I love hearing stories like Adams…a kid works his tail off to impress the coaches and finally gets his shot. I hope to see him on the field Sunday
Edwards
I hate to bust your bubble, but you app. state people need to get real and quit being homers. he had his chance in last preseason game. did you see the 3 drops. and all of them were for first down. I understand your loyalties but your first loyalty should be toward be improving panthers. hell be cut when the season is over. trust me, this was not one of hurneys shining moments. we basically traded 1st. pick in 2nd. round for this guy.

Bringing player up from the practice squad now makes sense.
This season is a wash. Rotate some players to the field and see what they can do in real games. IT’S WORKING GREAT WITH KEISER!!!
If BAMF finds another two or three nuggets like Keiser in the practice squad, it’s worth it.

Darwin and...
Cam had a lot of chemistry at Auburn…maybe the magic is still there…..after all, Steve Smith was a punt returner from the start, not a WR. Look at him now.
