Lions Feast on Panthers 49-35
Wow what a finish... that's all I can say. Instead of getting down early the Panthers got out to a 13 point halftime lead. The defense looked inspired and Special Teams actually scored. Everything was going so well...and then the 3rd quarter started.
QB Cam Newton looked like a rookie again. The run defense got tired and Matt Stafford lit up the Panther secondary. Yet in spite of giving up the lead they came back and tied the game with just 5 minutes remaining. I was thinking maybe we could hold on and force over time. Just the opposite happened and the Lions scored 14 more points to punch the Panthers in the gut and leave Detroit feeling worse about the loss than they should.
High Point of the Game
WR Steve Smith catches a two point conversion to tie the game with around 5 minutes to play
Low Point of the Game
QB Cam Newton is picked off by former Panther Chris Harris to end all hope of yet another comeback
The Good
- KR Keoloha Pilares returned the first Panther kick off for a TD since 2003 by Rod 'He Hate Me' Smart
- RB DeAngelo Williams rsuhed for 73 yards on 10 carries for a 7.3 yard average.
- RB Jonathan Stewart had 6 receptions out of the backfield for 87 yards
I'll save the bad and the ugly for after the jump...
The Bad
- Jason Baker shanked a punt 33 yards that was returned 16 yards that when the 15 yard horse collar penalty is added is a net 2 yard gain on the punt.
- QB Cam Newton had 4 INTs, though two were on tipped balls.
The Ugly
- The Panther run defense got ripped for 140 yards and 2 TDs on just 16 carries by Kevin Smith. The Lions just signed Smith off the street a week ago
- The Panther secondary got toasted for 5 TD passes by Matt Stafford

It is tough to accept
but this is simply our team this year; we are loaded with talent at several spots, but we lack depth and solid players in places. We do not have the pieces at the moment to be a consistent football team. Bright, bright future though.

Blame to go around after the start of the second half. We are simply not good enough to win games right now. Hopefully after next week we can win our third game… I mean, the colts can’t be that good… can they?

How you can play so good in the 1st the you forget how to defend in the 2nd…. It’s ridiculous

It's worth noting that they only played good defense for one quarter
The Lions only 2 drives in the 2nd quarter ended in TDs. The defense played one good quarter and 3 bad quarters.
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance baffle them with bullshit
On the plus side...
the offense scored 35 points. On the negative side – our defense gave up nearly 50 points. It’s a tough pill to swallow since we’re accustomed to the defense being robust and bailing out the offense, but it’s just not the case this season. We’re missing key cogs to the machine – that’s just all there is to it.
I’m saddened by the loss, but not disappointed. A lot of people are going to point to Cam as one of the reasons we lost, since he threw 4 interceptions. But, he’s just trying to force the ball down the field. Not to mention, 2 of those were off tipped passes. In short time, he’s had his ups and downs – but as he matures, I think we’ll see just what an utterly amazing player he will become.
Our defense on the other hand…I don’t know where to begin. They were doing their jobs in the first half, then took the second half off. I don’t think this one can be on the coaches though. I think we just need to draft smart and get some quality FAs in there to compete, regardless of who comes back post-injury.
The offense scored 35 points – which is enough to win most games. However, as someone pointed out in the game thread, the O-line got their lunch money taken by the Lion’s D.

The Teams Shortcomings May Be Pulling Cam Down With Them
I don’t mean that the way it sounds, what I mean is Cam is trying to lift and carry the team on his back to a win by trying to play outside himself, doing more than he can, pushing beyond his limits. The pressure of losing is really building on Cam.
For the last 2 games teams have taken away Cam’s deep throws to Steve Smith, and they are both getting frustrated. The Panthers need another very good deep threat on the other side of the field from Smith, to prevent teams from tilting their deep coverage to Smith’s side of the field. Maybe it’s Gettis, but the Panthers can’t put all their eggs in his basket, and I’m not sure they can depend on even high rookie draft pick for that, I think they need a proven veteran, to keep Cam and Smith happy.
The defense just needs help everywhere.
Point the finger at Newton?
I should say not.
The above post was wrong; our offense didn’t score 35, only 28 – but that should have been enough.
It’s the Defense who’s got to answer for this one, not our Offense, and for a change, not our Special Teams. And not the officiating. Just an inability of our D to get off the field.
Last week we made Chris Johnson look like his last year’s version (he returned to overpaid mediocrity today), and today, we couldn’t tackle another average RB. The Offense showed a lot of heart to tie it at 35, but again we were outscored.
I haven’t said anything we all didn’t see, but no way will I lay any blame for this loss on Newton. Or Smitty, or Williams, or Stewart. Or for that matter RT Bell, who allowed no sacks, and had no penalties. Big improvement from this big fella, and it should garner an Optimistic from James, IMO, as should the evaluation on DE Keiser, who came up big in his limited time, with 2 sacks.
Mea culpa
You’re right, I whiffed on that one. Offense scored 28 and ST scored the other touchdown :) I’m just not accustomed to that happening.

"DigD" You Missed My Point, I Think Cam Is Losing A Little Confidence In His Teammate (Defense Most Of All) & Is Feeling He Needs To Do More Than He Should Have To Do
It’s just starting, but if it continues he may start trying to fit passes into tighter windows, because he feels the pressure to win the game by himself. They need to try to find a way cut back on the stress a little for him. A win against the Colts would help.

A 2nd WR would do so much to open up our run game and take the pressure off Smitty. Be it a Veteran like Vjax, Djax or Bowe. Or be it a rookie like Blackmon. Then again Lafell is still making big plays. I just want to see Lafell play a full game as a no 2 and see how good he is for the whole game.
After today’s game im very nervous about the Colts. With Miami now having 3 wins and no longer a threat to land the no 1 pick and the Vikes and Rams no threat to draft Luck, I see the Colts trying to win a game or 2 now to restore some pride and self worth now that they can afford to and still land the 1st pick.
Next week i forsee another Panther loss.

So you acknowledge that our D is weak
yet you still clamor for a 1st round wide receiver pick in the same breath.
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY! I mean, assuming the lockout will end anytime soon...
Biyombo fo...ah who am I kidding? GO PANTHERS!
I really dont buy into the fact that we need to draft Defense just because it is doing worse than the offense.
first of all i blame most of our struggles defensively on injury. I have never seen a unit (linebackers) more decimated by injury every before. We also have a young team in a new scheme. I think that we should take a need filling BPA no matter what, and WR is a need, maybe not our biggest need but it is a need. Blackmon isnt my first choice but i would be happy to have him
You know what PT,
that post right there sounded downright logical.

Shut the hell up. You’re doing my head in with all this first pick, second pick scenario BS. You actually want the shame of picking 1st two years in a row?! I’m in no mood for this kinda crap after yesterdays game. Have some pride in your team

You act like the Colts are trying to lose
No team is thinking about the draft right now. Management might be. The fans might be. But every single player out on that field is out there to do nothing but win the game.
That didn't take long.
Shut. Up.

Despite the loss
I enjoyed the game today. We’re learning things as a team and as individual players. Our defense could use an injection of talent at virtually every level. I thought that Keiser played well in a limited role and at times Senn & Neblett looked very good. Defense started off strong and forced some TO’s and ST’s got a taste of what blocking was like and what can happen when players due their duty. It sucks, and it is not going to be solved over night but we have a good staff of coaches that are going to promote, acknowledge and encourage hard work (Keiser, Pilares, Neblett) & will not tolerate apathy.
I do the best that I can to evaluate our players but very few of us really know what our coaches see in the guys they inherited and who will still be around. We’ve got a few more weeks, our easiest matchup of the season & then several months to evaluate. Lets keep our heads up throughout and cheer for the best!

Why Panthers...
Why must you keep doing this to me? Get my hopes up, and then crush them… I hate this. Last season the losses didn’t affect me at all really, because I had completely given up on the team, and had waited for the next season. They aren’t allowing me to do that this year, and continue to break my heart week after week…

Something that really stuck out to me yesterday.
Offensive tackle has officially moved up to nearly DT/LB priority level this offseason. Gross has been a great LT for years, but he’s getting up there a little in age and it shows. Vanden Bosch had his number most of the game. At this point in the season I feel I can safely assume things that are going on are a trend for the most part. Gross has been getting beaten badly a couple times a game. He plays great most of the game, but a couple times this year, let’s face it, he’s been dominated. I don’t feel he’s a Pro Bowl caliber LT anymore. Certainly above average, but no longer elite. I’ve been touting Zack Brown as our 1st round pick, but with the losses mounting, Matt Kalil makes the most sense IMO. Move Gross over to RT to finish out his career and give Kalil the duty of protecting Cam’s blindside. That turns Byron Bell into more quality depth on the O-Line, something you can never have enough of. Gross can still do the job, but I don’t want a single finger laid on Cam.

Interesting stats for our DTs
Fua hasn’t had a single tackle in his last 5 games (he’s started in every one) and McClain has had 10 tackles in his last 3 games.
I've been saying Fooey needs to be benched. He's a bust, showing no improvement.
I didn’t count their snaps, but I think Andre Neblett got a lot more plays than Fua, compared to last week, and that should only increase, as the coaches see who comes to play, and who has the stuff to do it.
Also we saw many instances when Applewhite or Keiser came in at DE, and Hardy switched to DT. They’re trying to find the right combination.
Opposing QBs now have too much time to throw, though for the most part Stafford’s success came when he got it out quickly. This exposes our depleted LB corps, and the poor tackling from Sherrod Martin.
You cannot expect too much from the defense,
when the linebackers are introducing one another in the huddle every other series. Make the most of this season. Teach. Get experience, for players AND coaches!
:P
The Panther run defense got ripped for 140 yards and 2 TDs on just 16 yards by Kevin Smith.

That funny post reminds me that - for anyone who thinks DeAngelo has been loafing, after signing his big contract...
…did you see the lick he put on Suh, to block for a teammate, in the second half?
Can anybody imagine Chris Johnson, or Adrian Peterson doing that?
I think Cam isn’t the only player on Offense who’s getting sick and tired of laying it all out there, and losing, because our D can’t step up better, and shut our opponents down on 3rd and longs. I want to see some fire from our Defensive players, other than James Anderson, Greg Hardy, and Charles Godfrey. Show some more pride, men, and let’s learn how to win some games, with a total team effort.
with all this and TB sucking...
is it possible that we can beat the Colts and also Sweep the Bucs (because they are horrible too) and then beat NO on the last game of the season because they will be resting their starters…we could possibly get to 6 wins. I think it is totally doable.
Dear Baby Jesus in your golden diaper..thank you for making the number 89. Amen.
And we have the Falcons at home
We were a few bad breaks from winning in their house a few weeks back
