I figured I would have a hard time identifying the Power Play of the Week from the Titans game but once I replayed the game it became apparent pretty quick. One weakness I saw with our defensive line early in the season is they were rarely getting their hands up on pass plays and allowing passes to sail freely over the middle of the field. That changed this past week against the Titans as the Panthers knocked down 5 Titan passes, three by DE Greg Hardy. None were more powerful than the one he got in the 3rd quarter and is pictured to the right.
I'll set it up for you:
[Using my best Howard Cosell voice] On 3rd and 5 from the Panthers 44 yard line Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck was lined up in the shotgun. On the snap he quickly turned slightly to his right and attempted to hit RB Jevon Ringer with an outlet pass that might have gone for well more than the needed 5 yards. Yet the pass was not quick enough. DE Greg Hardy, lined up on the right side off the line exploded at the snap and was in Hasselbecks grill almost immediately, swatting the pass away and forcing the Titans to punt. Hardy's power play essentially prevented a possible Titans FG try and instead they punted. Hardy would actually swat away three passes on this day like they were flies on a horse's hindquarter.
So there you have it, Greg Hardy's pass defensed on 3rd down was the Panthers Power Play of the Week!
