What's Up? New Panthers Roster Cuts
I just read at RotoWorld.com that the Panthers have cut backup SS Jermale Hines (6-1, 219, a Combine 4.68-40, a Pro Day 4.55-40), the 5th round pick of the Rams this year, who the Panthers claimed earlier this season off waivers. It wasn't announced that anyone has been signed to take his place on the 53 man roster.
A little later RotoWorld reported that GM Marty Hurney hinted that RB Mike Goodson may be placed on IR as early as Wednesday, because of his injured hamstring.
Why now?
They could have waived SS Jermale Hines just a few days ago, and S Keamemana "Mana" Silva (6-1, 208, a Pro Day 4.41-40, 40 inch vertical) was available, or they could have signed CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (6-0, 207, a Combine 4.47-40, a Pro Day 4.30-40) off the Cowboys Practice Squad. However, when the Cowboys signed him off their Practice Squad before Sunday's game he was listed as a WR, so maybe he can't cover (a wasted 4th round pick?).
Do they need the roster space to add extra LB's?
I would like to see them sign LB Phillip Dillard (6-0, 245, a Combine 4.64-40, a Pro Day 4.53-40) off the Practice Squad.
What do you think is up with the roster moves?

or Haynesworth which BTW had a solid debut with the Bucs since they actually run a 4-3 defense.

Because the focus of the team is to play young players and evaluate talent
Not give last gasps of glory to aging/failing players in order to patchwork a one-and-done defense.
There’s no point in delaying the rebuilding that’s occurring to placate fans in the present.
Yea, he was real solid keeping the Houston run game in check...

Hines was a safety in name only
They’re looking for special teamers, not starting safeties. In terms of the safety spots we’re living or dying by Godfrey and Martin this year, for better or for worse.
Hey James, what would you think of this?
I’m not the biggest Godfrey fan, but I like him better than Martin. Plus, with the contract extension we’re basically stuck with him. What if we signed/drafted a hard hitting safety (in the mold of Hitman) and move Godfrey to FS? He’d need to get better with angles, but we’d have fewer collective missed tackles at the safety position.

I think a better CB would help them both out as well. Captain is playing the hardest he possibly can but he just isn’t more then a Nickel in the NFL. Out of him Butler and Hogan id say Hogan has the best shot just on talent alone to be a starter in the NFL but we haven’t seen how well he transitions and if he can stay healthy. If Kalil isn’t there and we cant or choose not to trade back id look real hard at Claiborne or Kirkpatrick (6’3) depending on when we pick. Both come from NFL powerplant defenses in the SEC.

Bit it's not their coverage I'm concerned with.
My concern is having two safeties who can’t tackle.

I think Godfrey has all the talent in the world he just has to be coached hard on the importance of having discipline at his position. If he would wrap guys up at times instead of going for the decleater he can be a pro bowl Saftey. He has the talent. Martin falls into the same line. I think he just needs to be drilled on fundamentals.

So far this year Martin has shown me he has no business starting.
He’s never around the ball. And when he is he misses a tackle. Maybe he will improve, but I’m not willing to put my eggs in that basket.

Martin is a bigger concern than Godfrey but Martin also can be replaced…We don’t have a lot invested in him. if he does continue to struggle we could look to replace him with a vet next season or draft a young guy to compete next year

Which brings me back to my original suggestion.
Move Godfrey to FS and bring in a SS.

Raiders Free Agent SS Tyvon Branch (6-0, 205, 4.31-40, 1.43-10), 2009 - 124 Tackles, 2010 - 104 Tackles (4 sacks)
Martin as the backup S, and as a 6-1 CB.
