Panthers Game Ball of the Week Fan Poll

Panthers TE Greg Olsen fumbled his chance to earn a game ball!

Update: Actually have the poll included this time

Oh Lord this is one tough assignment this week. Losing 30-3 obviously doesn't create many opportunities to highlight exceptional performances. I can think of one player off the top of my head who was an easy nominee but from there I had to go to the game book in hopes of finding another nominee. I was successful in finding a few more choices though I admit a couple are stretches:

CB Chris Gamble - Gamble had a nice INT that made him the Panthers all-time leader in interceptions with 26.

WR Legadu Naanee - Naanee had 8 receptions for 75 yards, a 9.8 yard per catch average.

DE Greg Hardy - Hardy registered 3 tackles, a QB Hurry and most importantly, knocked down three passes at the line of scrimmage.

LB James Anderson - Though nursing a sore ankle, Anderson again led the Panther defense with 10 tackles and a pass defensed.

DT Andre Neblett - Neblett recorded the 1st sack of his short career

K Olindo Mare - Mare kicked 6 touchbacks and made all of his FG attempts under 49 yards

So there you have our options. Make your selection!

Hardy is progressing nicely!

At least half a dozen teams would trade a 3rd round pick for him right now. A few others might even go higher.

Gamble gets it from me.

Not saying he deserves to win it but id throw Keiser on that list as well…kid has busted his ass to make this team and when he got to chance to play he gave more effort than majority of our starters.

Naanee

2nd game this season that he got both hands on a ball and deflected it to a defender for a pick.
Granted, neither throws were perfect, but still.

by Philipkcks on Nov 15, 2011 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Yeah it was thrown behind him..

I’m not even gonna put that one on him, it was a bad throw from the start. People need to stop hating on the guy.

He didn’t have the costly penalties hes been having and he was our best best reciever on the day.

My vote goes to Hardy though, was a beast this week.

He still had both hands on it

I’m not saying that the throw was a good throw, however, in the NFL, if you get both hands on a ball as a receiver, you are expected to come down with it, not to knock it in the air to a defender.

by Philipkcks on Nov 15, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Do we have to give one out this week?

I’ll give it to Gamble since he got us a turnover. That makes, what?, like five for the season (for the team)?

Nice overall game by Naanee, but that deflected pass costs him the ball.

because he acted like an overgrown baby out there. For all the amazing things he’s done this year for the Panthers I feel like he hurt the team as a whole last Sunday.

He needs to lock that shit up, this is the big leagues.

by Swamp Panther on Nov 15, 2011 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see why he takes losses so hard. I admire his passion but the dude is making 22 million and is dating Ciara for god sakes. Oh well, hopefully he will get all that out of his system this season and next season he will be numb when he loses. Don’t get me wrong, I never want him to be complacent but I also don’t want to see him sulk constantly when the team loses.

So mucho dinero and a hot girlfirend = loss of competitive fire?

And I really don’t think being “numb” after a loss is a good idea. Unless you just want us to suck season after season, so that we will always draft high and….heeeeey, wait just a minute!

lol….ho hoooo boy, you almost had me there, PT. Nice try. I gotta admit, that was your best “tank campaign disguised as fan support” scheme yet.

Seriously, I don’t think ive ever seen such a bad offensive performance from everyone. Olsen, Cam, the O line. Just terrible, this is one of those games the players and coaching staff should just throw away the film on and pretend that didn’t even happen. No need to watch tape on anything like that, players and coaches know damn well what needs to happen.

BTW Hines got cut today..

With all..

the fans wanting Blackmon or Jeffery wouldn’t that give us a pretty crowed WR corp…

1) Smith (still good for a few more years, he has fire)

2) Gettis (he had a great 1st year might be even better coming back from injury)

3) Naanee ( he’s becoming a good possession receiver)

4) Lefell (see #3 plus he has height, and can’t teach that)

5) Pilares (really haven’t seen what this kid can do, quite possibily be that x-factor coming out of the backfield, or line him up as a mismatch)

6) Edwards (cut)

So what do you think? We have a crowded WR corp do we really need 1 more, or just 1 more to push the others? but that would be lot of pushing for a 1st Rd pick?

the game ball of the week...

should go to James Anderson…
On top of leading the team in tackles, he showed another level of leadership by continuing to play at a high level though hindered by injuries and some less than spectacular play from so many of his teammates

by drg314 on Nov 15, 2011 9:17 PM EST reply actions

How about the Game Ball of SHAME

(1) Special Team (SHAME TEAM).. You are now the laughing stock of the entire NFL.

(2) Defense Team….. I’m not sure why people are HIGH on Gamble. Believe me, You are no STARTER in my book. A CB who can’t TACKLE is OUT in my book…

Speaking of Gamble…. People give him too much credit, Look to beat you is easy. I’ll run at you 10 times out of 10 and I know you can’t DO ANYTHING. Go watch good CB they can tackle if they have to.

 (3) Chud -- Yes You…I guess the Titans have made it clear that your scheme can easily be shredded. I’ve known your tendencies after the second game. You are actually predictable. Spread your recievers out and THROW DEEP. This is not NEW. Chargers have been doing this what did this get them zero ring, Philadephia the DREAM team  having been doing this, What did this get them? Zero ring.

Here is the problem with that scheme:

To throw deep with accuracy requires iron clad protection for the QB and your target cannot be EASILY neutralized by being double team. The problem with your team is you don’t have a reliable #2 WR plus your protection for your QB is not very good when assaulted. That is exactly how the Titans neutralized your scheme… What made this SCARY was the ease at which they did this by having Finnegan on Steve Smith and having front guys shred your QB protection..

This is how you put yourself in this SHAME list. It was clear what was going on. All you needed to do was to adjust, throw in some better Screens, Runs and Options. All this where available at your disposal. What did you do? More of the same over and over again which is just UNBELIEVABLE… What a stubborn deep passing affinity

Maybe you should ask Norv (Your former Boss) and Andy Reid how many combined rings have they won for their stubborn deep passing affinity… NONE. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the best way to stop those scheme is to HARASS the QB and drop enough into Coverage….that is why the chargers Fans are SICK of that SCHEME. It’s for SHOW it doesn’t WIN Games. Football is about ADJUSTMENT

Did you watch how the Raiders harassed Rivers on Thursday Football…. If you are not careful, You scheme can get CAM in a tough and bad situations

(4) Rivera. Sorry… You were outcoached. I didn’t put you on this List. You did put YOURSELF.
For instance, You know your Special team is a Joke at best, how on earth will you allow them to be tested by having your kicker not kick the ball out of the field. Is that setting up your guys to succeeded? Maybe you need to go take lessons from other rookie coaches how they are managing their team.

You did it against the BEAR and now Titans. I guess you want them to LEARN on the fly by keep setting them up to fail…Keep doing it and keep ending up in my list of Shame

(5) Entire Offensive Line – Your key Job is to protect CAM, How Titans was able to shred your protection with just three Men is mind boggling and very impressive. It was so basic. Fake Blitz with lots of guys, drop them into coverage and rush three and you were still BEAT…. Unbelievable..

Travelle – I’ll call you out… You weigh about 312lbs and 6-4 and you can’t MAN up and defend your area. I’ve been watching you. You are not pulling you weight on the LINE and holding your position. It’s no more an open secret that the way to penetrate the Offensive line is to come thru your lane. I get Bell is a penalty machine but you have to give him credit that he does his best to not get beat even though he holds in the process but for you Travelle, You are NOT doing much…. Go watch the tape and see your performance. Sorry, it’s on the tape and Titans only exposed it.

(6) Sean McDermott – Obviously, It’s clear you are operating above your pay grade. I don’t blame you I just question why anyone will put you as their DC. The excuse that you don’t have the right personnel is just Lame. I guess you don’t have the right personnel to TACKLE properly. You don’t have the right personnel to sometimes mix your blitz by rushing from the middle, you don’t have the right personnel to stop 3rd and Long….

Again let’s see your next excuse

(7) Cam – it’s time to show REAL leadership by challenging your teammates and putting them on the spot. Legends such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Aikman, Lewis were known to put their teammates on the spot and demand their best. Enough of this nonsense of taking the bullet for your team by saying you all played your best. YOU GUYS DID NOT. The best you can do for them is to put them on the spot and demand excellence. You have already EARNED the right to do that.

Kurt Warner was known to get the best from his teammates, Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees are all examples. Look CAM I like you a LOT. But I can assure you. If you don’t YOU WILL FAIL on a Consistent basis.

And……The BALL goes to…….. Yes number (1) the Special Team aka the SHAME TEAM

Deep passing affinity

Yeah, you neglected the teams in the last 10-15 years that did have a deep passing affinity that won it all. Colts, Saints, Pats, Steelers, Rams.
You picked specific teams that haven’t won the Super Bowl, but ignored the teams that did win it with the same style.

As for calling out Sean McDermott, let’s see any coach have a good defense with a young team when 3 of the front seven are on injured reserve.
Carolina has over 16M on IR, most of that on the defensive side of the ball. I’m going to give the D coordinator a bit of leeway.

by Philipkcks on Nov 16, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

I can't say I agree 100% with the things you say but I admit I enjoyed reading it all.

and to agree 100% with braves&panthers4ever. I think you come off like one of those loudmouth sports analysts on tv, yelling at the prompter like you know what’s best for everyone because you are excited that you formed a thoughtful opinion about something. So yeah, that’s my opinion of your opinion and I’m right goddamnit.

“It was clear what was going on. All you needed to do was to adjust, throw in some better Screens, Runs and Options. All this where available at your disposal. What did you do? More of the same over and over again which is just UNBELIEVABLE… What a stubborn deep passing affinity”

I can agree with that and also just don’t understand why they want to run DeAngelo on almost every first down as if no one expects that to happen. People wonder why he’s not doing well, I think it’s because they aren’t utilizing his skill set to match the formations they call, and when the call them. Also, DeWill does seem a bit slower breaking out of the back field and I can’t tell if it’s delayed handoffs or what. I think they should try and screen it out to him more often. Cam said Jstew was always in his ear about getting him the ball, maybe Dewill should be too.

And agree that Cam needs to be more of a leader and quit endorsing Gatorade when he’s on the sideline. He doesn’t have to be a cheerleader but hell, last year even Matt Moore tried hard to keep the team fired up on the sideline even when he was inactive with a concussion.(and to add, about Cam, quit being a crying baby during press conferences, almost even assholish at times). He’s young though, and he’s been a bright spot for this team. I have no doubt he’ll get there. I like that he doesn’t put the blame on others and spills out the team effort talk.

On Wharton, maybe you have a point, I haven’t really paid any attention to that aspect.

On Gamble? What are you talking about? If anyone needs to learn to tackle, it’s Sherrod Martin, and I’ve been saying that since last year. He is sill missing easy tackles and he is one of two players directly involved in letting that Titans receiver run the TD.

The coaches are young but like the rest of the team, they are showing promise. It was just a piss poor game and other than not adjusting properly, I blame the players more this week for playing like they thought they were still on a bye.

I bet they play much better next week

The good thing about loosing like last week is it humbles the team. The coaches also get a better idea for the teams weaknesses. The Panthers played like a 2-7 team last week but that’s not usually the case. I’m a Vikings fan but I LOVE watching Cam Newtons potential. Anyways good luck to yall!

Kraken

Hardy is becoming a monster, and if the the DTs start getting pressure and holding the point of attack with Big Money on one side and the Kraken on the other we may be looking at one damn mean DL.

Tied for second Naanee and Anderson

Anderson is a hell of a line backer he should not be leading this team in tackles from the SAM but he does anyway. If we had another decent SAM he should have been moved to the MIKE to capitalize on his abilities and hedge on Beason’s injury.

Naanee’s progression after the bye was awesome 8 catches at nearly 10ypc if he can keep up this level of play and (hopefully) keep improving Rivera is going to look like a genius come next season. That being said I understand it was one game, with a bad INT (on both guys), however, after Sunday I need some kind of high point to keep from wanting to bash by skull with an electric blue hammer.

and I find it awesome that Hardy was pumping up the crowd after the refs made a call they didn’t agree with (I forgot what the call was). I wonder if he has leader potential. In a couple of years, could Hurney carry two “big money” DEs on the team?

Jansen has actually gotten 16 votes?!

I feel bad for suggesting him now, I was only kidding. Not that he doesn’t deserve some recognition; he seem to do his job pretty well. But I think Hardy and Anderson probably deserve the game ball. I think Anderson was injured but still played hard, and it is possible that Hardy (along with Big Money) is on the verge of making everyone here forget about Brutus Peppers. That dude is scary….real scary.
