Matt Barkley. Draft day gold?

I know I take a lot of heat on here for talking about the draft and how we should be smart and try to get a high draft pick to get more franchise players for this team. I am very open with my philosphy. At this point I think it would be better for the long haul for us to lose more this season so it can reap great rewards for the future and in particular on draft day. Most disagree with this sentiment and I can understand that. Who likes losing? I sure dont but Keep in mind, I am in no way, shape or form pro losing, infact if the Panthers are 7-2 or even 5-4 right now, I would not even be thinking about the draft but rather be rooting for us to win more so we could make the playoffs. But the sad reality is we are not 7-2 or 5-4. We are 2-7.

I know the big talk in the upcoming draft is Andrew Luck. "Suck for Luck", we have all heard it a million times. While the ideal situation for us would be to land the 1st pick and land a huge goldmine in trades, I just do not see that as the most likely outcome considering the Colts want Luck and in all likelihood will go 0-16. (Then again they do play us so they might go 1-15) but anyway, thats neither here nor there.

While we might miss out on the Luck goldmine trade, there is another trade out there that could possibly reap just as many rewards, that is the Matt Barkley trade. Matt Barkley is easily the 2nd best QB prospect in this draft and even some analysts on the fringe say he might be as good a prospect as Luck is. I think its very reasonable at this point for us to land the 2nd pick in the draft. A lot of teams out there, especially those that land the top 5 pick will be in desperate need for a young, franchise QB of the future.

Take the Washington Redskins for example. You really think if they have the 5th pick in the draft, they wouldn't break the bank to make sure they get Matt Barkley given how bad their QB situation is right now? Same goes for the Seahawks. So you might be wondering, what exactly could we possibly get in return with a trade for the rights to the 2nd overall pick and Matt Barkley? well buckle up, here is where it gets fun..

I personally think a team like the Skins would be willing to part ways with their 1st rounder, 2nd rounder and 3rd rounder. So this is when my imagination runs wild. We trade up and get the 5th pick in the draft, draft Justin Blackmon in the 1st round (or Alshon Jeffery if Blackmon is gone by the 5th pick). The 2nd round starts, we draft Vontaze Burfict with our first 2nd rounder and with our other 2nd rounder we draft Brandon Thompson.

Sounds amazing right? We aren't even in the 3rd round of the draft yet and we already landed Justin Blackmon, Vontaze Burfict and Brandon Thompson. Or we could go all defense. Draft Morris Claiborne in the 1st round, draft Alameda Ta'mu and Burfict in the 2nd round. Now I know a lot of this is early and what if. What if Barkley doesn't delcare, what if Burfict and Thompson are both gone before the 2nd round, What if we somehow go on a winning streak all season, land a wild card spot and win the super bowl. But you have to admit, getting a trade of that caliber does make you somewhat warm and fuzzy on the inside like a little kid on Christmas morning.
