Panthers Fail to Adjust to Newton 'Spy' Scheme

CHARLOTTE, NC - NOVEMBER 13: Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton #1 scrambles out of the pocket late in the fourth quarter against the Tennessee Titans at Bank of America Stadium on November 13, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Titans defeated the Panthers 30-3. (Photo by Brian A. Westerholt/Getty Images)

I found this post that included comments from several Titan defenders on how they were able to shut down QB Cam Newton and the Panther offense yesterday:

The key? According to several Titans defenders it was how effectively linebacker Akeem Ayers or safety Michael Griffin "spied" Newton, a strategy by which one player spends all his time shadowing the quarterback. This maintains containment, so Titans teammates can pass-rush without fear of being burned by a wild scramble.

Prior to this game the Panther offense and OC Rob Chudzinski had been able to counter this type of scheme but throws to the TE and swing passes out of the backfield. Obviously that didn't work too good. I wonder how much of an impact not having TE Jeremy Shockey available had. Shockey left the game early with an injury for which I'm still waiting to hear about.

Star-divide

"He couldn't do anything but sit there," said defensive tackle Jurrell Casey. "It's one of those things at the beginning of the year we worked on - to get that first-down win and give them second-and-long. We did that today."

No doubting Newton was not able to break the contain very often though he did finish with 50 yards rushing. On several of those runs though he was stopped short of the first down, something he had shown a knack for prior to Sunday.

We can now expect this to be the normal scheme to stop Newton until we figure out how to counter it:

"The thing we talked about all week was rush integrity - don't let him just run away," said safety Chris Hope, a Rock Hill native who intercepted Newton in the second half. "He breaks most of his big plays with his feet. He makes long passes after he has extended the play beyond what the coverage can handle.''

To hear another team say their objective was to make Newton beat them from the pocket and then have that strategy work is disconcerting at best. We know the Panthers Coryell based offense needs time in the pocket to set up so its Kryponite is a strong and quick pass rush. Yesterday showed us again that our offensive line, with a back-up and rookie starting on the right side is average at best.

All I know is Chudzinski better be working on some counter measures because we can expect to see this scheme every week until we figure out how to beat it,

I think it helps that...

The TItans basically publicly exposed their gameplan…so much so that the Lions will be sure to implement many elements of it.

This falls on the coaches to adjust, and next week’s game will be very interesting to watch…if they do, it’ll be the mark of good coaching, if not, it’s cause for worry.

i think this is a case of people making too much of nothing

These schemes have been used all year. The difference is the pressure. The Titans won upfront… it really is that simple. Any scheme will work if the DLine wins individual battles… fix is block better and Newton get the ball out quicker…not really any other fix for that to be honest

+1

I feel that the only thing that was exposed was how talented and fast the Titans D is. Verner and Finnegan playing up to expectations, Ayers showing some fantastic speed, that D-Line with Jones, Casey, etc., showing some mad skills out there. Our Panthers need some work on the offense, but let’s give credit to how much talent the Titans D has.

I knew something was up because every time he’d run it, there were 2 guys waiting for it. We have to run the ball more. Deangelo & Stew need more carries. We can’t get away from the run just b/c we don’t have a big gainer every 3rd/4th run. Not to mention it may hide our horendous defense somewhat

As Bill Voth stated, we needed to run on 1st down.

Titans found our tendency to throw on 1st down and they decided they wanted to defend 1st down like it was 3rd. I can’t believe that actually worked an entire game

It's just incorrect that we didn't run on First Downs; Bill is wrong.

I doubt any of you will take the time to analyze the Play-by-Play as I did, but it shows otherwise. There needs to be some independent thinking here, and not just accepting whatever’s said as truth.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011111301/2011/REG10/titans@panthers#menu=highlights&tab=analyze&analyze=playbyplay

I’ve only done the 1st half, and spent enough time on it, and don’t care about the second half, when we were down 0-17, and worse, and had to look more to the pass.

But in that First Half, we had 8 Offensive Series, and 16 First Down plays, thanks to not going 3 and out but 5 of those 8 series.

The 1st series, we ran on 1st down, gained 3, then 2 inc passes led to a punt.
The second, which was a promising drive, we had 6 FD plays, 4 of which were runs.
The next 4 series, we went 3 and out, with 2 begun by runs, and 2 by pass plays, which were sacks of the QB. No passes were thrown, but I count them as pass plays, assuming that was the intent.
The 7th series began with a run by Newton. Maybe it was a scramble off a designed pass play, who knows?
The 8th was a pass to Stewart for 8 yds. Two more FDs on that series, with less than a minute to go before the half, understandably began with passes.

So there were 16 First Down plays in the first half, and 8 were rushes, and 8 were passes.

Is that not equal play-calling distribution?

At the very least, it was falling behind that led to more pass plays in the second half, but in the first half, there was no such tendency.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing.

I would like to see more high percentage throws that would result in a positive gain and set up 2nd and 3rd and manageable.

I'm not talking about running the option.

I’m saying we have the same people we had in 2009 when we had two 1100 yard rushers. Except now we actually have a passing attack to make rushing easier. Just haven’t blended the two effectively yet…yet.

Reminds me of the game against ATL when we rushed 55 times.

Weinke lined up wide in the DeAngelo cat more than he did under center. If you can get 5 yards a pop and keep the chains moving you can still win like that. One thing it does is keep the opposing offense off the field, and makes it hard for them to find any sort of rhythm. But you’ll only beat bad teams that way.

What's even more perplexing

is that Lance ll, who had the bulk of carries only averaged 3.2 yds on his 30 carries, and they were 5-14 on third downs, but as a team they rushed 4.4 yds per carry…Definitely looks like this was a don’t do anything to lose the game, and the defense will keep you in it mentality…

The rate limiting factor would have been the one on one matchup

between Newton and the “spy”. However the DL’s had such impressive pressure on Cam, he could not make a decision quickly.

I still feel that the DL’s kept the edges with rushing while the defense stacked the middle with blitzes and stunts. Cam did not have any time to go to long routes and therefore Steve Smith was shut out of game.

Screens and short passes open the run. Play action allows the big play…..

by univonc on Nov 14, 2011 11:22 AM EST reply actions

Bingo.

There’s no way we shouldn’t be able to shred a defense like this with screen passes and passes to the TE. I think a lot of what happened yesterday has more to do with execution than scheming. Tennessee executed it’s defensive scheme very well and we didn’t execute on offense at all. The drop by Stewart and the fumble by Olsen are two examples. It also seems like Olsen had a couple of drops as well. If this is the only way the league can stop Cam, I think we’re in good shape. Yesterday though, they did not look ready to play and execute the offense at all. Young team, rookie QB, makeshift defense and a new coaching staff coming off of their first bye week; maybe we should have seen this coming. Also, getting punched in the mouth once in a while is good for the soul.

Not every defense can shut down Steve Smith, spy and get that kind of pressure on Cam.

Three plays put us in a hole we couldn't dig out from...

1) PR touchdown – must fix this
2) Stewart drop on perfectly set up screen
3) Olsen fumble in the red zone

At that point, we were toast. Totally deflated and playing from too far behind. Three mf’ing plays.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

The spy scheme I'm sure has been run on us all year..

I don’t know for a fact..but I fail to believe that this is the first team to “Spy” Newton. It’s not exactly a new idea.. The only reason Newton wasn’t reaching the first down marker was because he was running from 9-14 yards out. As it has been said..the O line got beat. Being sacked 5 times will throw any QB off. This is the second time in 2 games that a defensive player has had a free pass at Newton’s blind side. luckily this time Newton saw Witherspoon coming. Gross needs to step up….or we won’t be able to keep our QB healthy..

Still run it? Play action on 3rd and 6 doesn’t fool anybody. I agree we should have run it more on 1st down as the Titans game plan suggests but given our weapons you would think we could move down the field regardless of a ‘spy’ scheme.

One team builds a 17-0 lead, that's what happens.

If and when we ever jump out to such a big early lead, you’ll see two things amazingly appear: we’ll run the ball more, and we’ll pile up sacks on the opposing QB.

Cause and effect, a principle of physics.

by bigdavis on Nov 14, 2011 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

I would have stayed with the run longer than we did.

And I’m not talking about 1st down solely. Seems like if we don’t gain 5 yards on 1st we are inclined to pass on 2nd and pass on 3rd if applicable.

But it matters not.

Sunday's game is a must-win for the Lions

since they lost yesterday to their division rival Bears. These two teams are both now 6-3. Barring a “meltdown in cheese-town” they cannot catch the packers for first. The Lions must win this weekend to keep in contention for a wild card spot or to be ready for the Packers to hit a wall.

I would be surprised and ecstatic if the Panthers pull out the win Sunday, scheme adjustment or not. I’m just hoping Suh/Fairley, the dirtball twins, don’t remove Cam’s head from his body.

We stopped running too early. Got anxious and jumped ship. And what makes it worse it that the OL had proven that they weren’t going to protect Cam. Best thing to do in that case is run the football. Let our backs take the hits, not our QB. That whole game was just terribly schemed.

The whole offense was off

I don’t think it was just the spies that made a difference. I think that every facet of the offense was off yesterday. Cam wasn’t as accurate as normal and didn’t sense the pressure as well or run thru it as well. Their secondary played at a very high level and shut down our wrs and our TEs. Everybody dropped balls that should have been caught and the receivers turned the ball over twice. This team cannot overcome multiple turnovers.

Rivera and company seem to put no emphasis on ST and will get burned again and again until they do. The Titans said they practiced hard all week long to improve their ST and it showed.

Bottom line: shut down our offense, run the ball, wait for us to implode and you win easily as that is all anybody needs to do this year to beat us. Not a complicated game plan really. The Titans executed it perfectly.

by Panthster on Nov 14, 2011 11:46 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I dont get it.

Surely in the Panthers first series Chud, Cam and Bamf would have noticed that the Titans were spying. Why didn’t they make immediate adjustments by running the ball. But I guess the O-line was so bad that Cam couldn’t go through his reads and progressions like he usually does. He had like 5 sacks. Some of the sacks were his fault but to avoid 3 and Out you can’t just keep throwing the ball away. The O-lines Pass protection and receivers route running were a joke yesterday. The coach also needs learn to make quicker and smarter decisions. Its as if they left a rookie QB to figure things out on his own, while he was getting killed in the pocket. " Adapt or Die" is a mantra Bamf has to learn and apply. I feel like they left Cam out to dry and expected him to “pull the rabbit out the hat” like he usually does.

Teams know now, that if you let Cam sit the pocket he will kill your secondary. So to counter the first down blitzing by the Titans, Chud could have ran the FREAKING Ball to keep the defense off balance and to control the clock. BAMF and Chud can game plan well, but Bamf & Co’s game decision making is the most worrying thing, and they don’t seem adept to making critical Offensive changes at crucial points in the game to prevent Sundays bloodbath. We our horrifying Special Team a.k.a Special Needs and Defense don’t contribute at all anyways. They stuck to the game plan that wasn’t working and the Panthers paid for it and our rookie QB took all the blame. Again. Its sad really.

Read my First Half analysis above.

It’s a repeated misconception that we didn’t run on First Downs in the first 2 quarters.

In our first 2 series, contrary to what you assumed, we had 7 First Down plays, and ran on 5 of them.

As a team we are better than this...

LIke someone mentioned above, we have two top runnings backs and they need to be fed the ball. Now I expect for the game against Detroit next week to be very competitive and if not, I think something is not right in our locker room and thise whole coaching staff have failed. This team has talent, we competed in every game this year, but week in and week out, the same mistakes are showing. I can’t continue to blame most of these players if the coaches aren’t making the right adjustments and putting emphasis on certain things that the players should be doing. It’s time we held this coaching staff accountable for the lack of playing better at home these past few games.

They really should take a day and practice the screen pass.

I saw them try it a couple of times and goofed it up a couple of times. 1 of those times Stewart could have ran for 20 yards after the catch. After they messed it up a couple of times, they abandoned it. I have always been a fan of the screen against the blitzing, but the Panthers never seem to be able to do it right.

The screen pass to Stewart worked wonders in the Jacksonville game – I think that was probably the single deciding factor in that win. He showed some great hands in a freaking monsoon. He just didn’t grab that one at the beginning of this past game, and the offense just snowballed into crap from there. =/

Exactly why any day now the implosion of Tebow is coming. All I can say is thank god Cam is a great pocket passer and not a run 1st QB or else he would be finished since defenses are now figuring it out.

how after one loss people just throw a unit under the bus. Granted, the Oline looked like hot garbage for a lot of the game yesterday but it’s not all on them. On our first drive that ended up being the Olsen fumble they were doing really well pass and run blocking. Kalil comes out a couple snaps and things start to get shaky and then nothing really went well for us at all after that fumble. But if we’re going to be fair on more than a couple of those sacks and hurries it was the Cam Roethlisberger effect of holding on to the ball for to long. Granted, our wr’s were not getting any separation but you can’t just put it all on the line when there were multiple factors involved and considering the injuries they have done a pretty good job for the rest of the season

screaming at my computer hoping he would hear me and throw the ball away. I hope the OC will learn from this game and call some short passing routes if a defense decides to use the same game plan.

Do you think sacks will be a normal occurrence in light of Chud’s affinity for deep passes?

I'm okay with Cam trying (and usually succeeding) to buy time. That's who he is, and I wouldn't change it...

Problem was, when he bought time, there still wasn’t anybody to throw to, or they dropped it, or he sailed one. It wasn’t our day. It also wasn’t Detroit’s day, or Buffalo’s day, and certainly wasn’t Mike Smith’s day … I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing he’s being crucified on the Atlanta blogs today. Actually, the only team so far that won after the week 9 bye is Jacksonville (over Indy). The last one, Minnesota, plays tonight against Green Bay. Yikes.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

not every team has the corners for this scheme to be as effective

every team we have played against has tried this scheme but it didnt give us as much trouble because they didnt have the corners to hold coverage long enough to make it effective. smitty has always had trouble with finneran(i think thats how you spell it) and thier other 2 corners are no slouch. usually newton can break the pocket and find smitty deep but he would break the pocket and everyone was coverd. i doubt many other teams will be able to have good enough coverage to make this an every week problem. bottom line is i dont think we match up well against them i thought it all week…win or loss look for the O to rebound next week and look better.

Matt Schaub out for the year! That makes things a lot easier when we play them in a few weeks…Bad luck for them, QB, WR & best defensive player with serious injuries…

It probably means we will just see more of Arian Foster on the ground

And when he gets tired, they will bring in Ben Tate, gulp.

Agreed

Houston is one of the best rushing teams, if not the best, this year. A couple of weeks ago, Foster went for 200-something and Tate went for over 100. I’m not looking forward to this game.

Don’t worry, we will still most likely lose. At this point we could play a team with Ryan Leaf under center and we would make him look like Aaron Rodgers plus they have Arian Foster and the Astrodome is a tough environment.. I hate to sound like this but sadly it’s the truth this year.

But seriously...

Just as Cam has responded and overcome the other defensive schemes (i.e. heavy blitzing, zone coverage,…), I expect Cam to overcome this as well. That’s why I’m not too worried. I’m glad Cammy is seeing all of this in his first year. In subsequent years, this invaluable experience will allow Cammy to surgically break down defenses a la Aaron Rodgers.

Hello Panthers fans

Lions fan here. I see you guys are also coming off a blowout loss, as we absolutely killed ourselves early in a blowout loss to the Bears. I really like the future of the Panthers with Cam Newton under center. I think he hit the rookie wall as he is struggling to make the big plays like he did early, but its the NFL man. Parity is the sole reason for one year turnarounds, upsets, and streaks. As bad as the record indicates for the Panthers, I believe they have a very bright future.

The Lions started 5-0 and have gone 1-3 since. It seems like Stafford has been in a slump lately. He had a good game in Denver, but really has struggled in certain situations. Jahvid Best has been out which only hurts our anemic running game even more. The offense has been in long 3 down situations due to lack of a consistent running game.

They’ve relied on explosion plays with Megatron and underneath passes to Pettigrew. Reverses and other trickery have been used as well, but the running plays just seem too predictable and inconsistent. I wonder if we don’t get some sort of a running game going if we even make the playoffs this year, as our 2nd half schedule is brutal.

I’m confident that we ca beat Carolina, but the Lions musn’t overlook this team. They can be flatout explosive on offense with Newton, Smith, and the 2 running backs. I hope we can contain Newton and limit the big running plays. This definitely is a must win for the Detroit Lions.

We played like absolute ass Sunday, and deserved the ass-whoopin’ the Titans gave us.

Everyone should visit the bleacher report.com

onto the panthers blogs and read this article from the so called writer stating how newton is a run first Qb. How Andy D has a better pass %, more tds and less ints and deserve offensive rookie of the year award. How Newton will never win a super bowl, comparing newton to Vick and mcnabb etc.

by adam carter on Nov 15, 2011 12:27 AM EST via mobile reply actions

The guy should does love pocket passers and

claims he knows so much about Qb’s prospects rather they will win the superbowl or not.

by adam carter on Nov 15, 2011 12:30 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Why should we...

We are not retards that read those nonsense at bleacher report. Anyone that has that view or believe those garbage is just plain stupid..

It’s that simple

I put about as much stock in CO comments as I do bleacher report articles.

I could go there and write an article about how Dalton likes to put on his favorite pair of purple pantyhose and riverdance to Justin Bieber, but it wouldn’t make it true. It’s just some dude and his opinion.

it is almost not fair having rodgers throw to his wrs. i was watching the packers game, and im optimistic that one day cam will develop into an elite qb like rodgers. he was just toying w the vikings d all night long. cam definitely hit a rookie wall last game, but i know he can get there.

Titans players give themselves too much credit for gameplan...

They think they had some great gameplan, but what they did was not new. I’m not worried about anyone trying to copy it. What really happened was we refused to run on 1st down, and our OL played poorly. We had too many penalties and sacks. That happens sometimes, and, by the way, our D and ST still suck. The Titans played well, but this loss was more about execution than gameplan. They executed and we didn’t. If you add more talent to our roster, and we don’t execute, we’ll still lose…like the Eagles and Chargers. Rivera should officially announce that rebuilding and the honeymoon are over, and people who don’t execute are gonna have their ass handed to them during the game by the opposition, and by him at next practice. Someone needs to get cussed out.
