OT: Who is watching the "Carrier Classic" basketball game tonight between UNC and MSU?

via l2.yimg.com

Tonight, UNC and MSU will face off on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Carl Vinson in what is coming to be known as the "Carrier Classic." I don't know about anyone else, but I think this is the coolest thing ever done in college basketball, and possibly in sports history. What a great way to honor our troops on Veteran's Day. This should be a really great game tonight between two teams with the utmost respect for each other, and a history of meeting each other in the NCAA tournament.

There is a complete photo gallery here with some really great pictures of the setup and the teams getting used to playing outdoors. Both coaches seem absolutely tickled by the opportunity to play in the unique setting, and who can blame them? This is college basketball history in the making. 7,000 military service men and women will be in attendance, as well as President Obama.

I think the edge here clearly goes to UNC for several reasons. They have the best front-court in college basketball, the better talent, and their heavy focus on inside shooting and fast breaks will give them the edge with the possibility of gusty winds in play. MSU is no slouch however, as they bring a physical team that is always willing to fight for the ball, and a coach who is one of the best in the game in Tom Izzo.

I give the edge to UNC 62-51 in a low scoring affair, as both teams shake off the rust and meet a little resistance from the outdoor conditions.

So what do you think Panther fans? Will you be watching tonight? Tip-off is at 7pm, and it is a national broadcast. Who you got?

College basketball is the one sport where I don’t have a “favorite team”, and I can watch it because I just love watching the game itself. (I don’t like the NBA, but I love the game of basketball.)

Unfortunate

Veterans Day is a time to celebrate honesty, integrity, and courage. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has not exhibited any of these traits in the past year.

It’s saddening to me that the money machine that is ESPN continues to support universities who fail to meet the standards and guidelines set forth.

I might agree with you if they were playing a football game on the carrier (which i really really really hope someone can make that happen someday), but the UNC basketball program did nothing wrong.

Anyway, as boring as the game might be, I think Navy and Air Force should play a yearly game on a carrier and in a Hangar, respectively.

Dude, stow it.

College football as a whole is a morality cesspit. When you can find recruiting violations via a U.S. map and a dart, maybe the problem’s not with the integrity of the schools, but with the rules that are used to govern those schools.

I suppose these days it takes UNC two or so years of being irrelevant in order for them to get that good.

Duke doesn’t seem to have that problem.

BTW, I’d be a bit worried about the next two years if I’m a UNC fan.

And oh yeah, remind me again what an NIT tournament is like? I honestly can’t remember ever watching one of those.

by pancanbra on Nov 11, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I'll accept that

We do take about two years to settle into the team.As much as I hate to admit it Duke is good I pray every year that Coach K goes to the NBA (he never does _). But let’s look at this

- UNC leads the series 131-101
- ACC Regular Series Championships UNC-28 Duke-19
-ACC Tournament Championships Duke-19 UNC-17
-NCAA Final Fours UNC-18 Duke-15
-NCAA Tournament Championships UNC-5 Duke-4

I’m not worried about the next two years the coaching staff is excellent at recruiting

That’s a low blow bringing up the NIT

by rscott94 on Nov 11, 2011 2:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Ya but,

who has been doing better recently? Duke has won 3 straight ACC titles and Roy Williams as a coach is 8-9 against Duke. The problem with Chapel Hill is that they don’t develop players. They play the same 5 all star recruits every season and hope that they don’t leave school early. IMO Coach K does a better job of coaching a team and gets more of his players involved.

I'm not talking about the NBA

I was talking about college and why every three or four years Chapel Hill goes from being a title contender to a team of average joe’s (though their not actually average joe’s, their 3 or 4 elite freshmen who have been handed the reigns)

"One step at a time"

by mcdonaldwr on Nov 11, 2011 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

If you look closer, it usually coincides with a switch at PG

the PG position at UNC is like the QB position in the NFL. Roy Williams asks an awful lot of his PGs, and until they build trust with the players around them, the team will usually struggle.

This is why last year, until Drew II finally got out of the way, we stunk. Then, once Marshall took over, we were great.

That is because Marshall is a pass-first PG and Drew was more of a shooting PG that sucked at shooting.

Rarely do we get the rare combination of shooting and passing that we had in Ty Lawson. We had a dominant team during that championship run, but Ty Lawson was the main reason we didn’t just win, but destroyed, our opposition.

The success of both teams has been a total wash over the last 10 years. Both have been dominant.
Duke has won 3 straight ACC TOURNAMENT titles

FTFY, ACC titles refer to the team who has the best overall record at the end of the regular season and before the tournament. The tournament is a separate title.

On that note, UNC has won the ACC title 6 times since 2000 and Duke has won 4 times.
Both teams have won the NCAA tournament twice since 2000, Carolina has won twice in the past 5 years.
Both teams have been to the final four 3 times in the last 10 years.

I put a bit more creedence into the the tournament

But truth be told I don’t hate Chapel Hill. I was never a one or the other guy in fact I enjoy watching both in the tournament every year; however, when they play each other I’ve always pulled for Duke. Coach K is just a baller. The ACC is going to be crazy when Cuse & Pitt join up.

"One step at a time"

Oh god yes. Ultimately, it will benefit all ACC teams to face some stiffer competition than just at the top with UNC and Duke.

Hey, guess what

If it takes our teams and freshmen a year to settle into our system so be it. We keep winning national championships at the current rate we are doing so under Roy, then I really don’t care if we end up in an NIT in between.

I personally am not worried at all about the next two years.

Im watching it for Barnes, Henson, and McAdoo

One of them will more then likely be drafted by the Bobcats this year

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 11, 2011 11:57 AM EST reply actions

I don't see them drafting Henson

He fits the mold of Tyrus Thomas and Bismack. I think they’ll look to add a wing player.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 11, 2011 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Tyrus Thomas got hurt and will be a good 6th man at best not if he isnt traded

And Henson and Bismack are nowhere near the same player plus I think Biyombo will be a C in the NBA. If there is no season and the Cats are siiting 10th-13th and Henson is there they will take him unless Austin Rivers is there.

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 11, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I just don't know how well he'll be able to score in the NBA

And that’s what the Bobcats need in their frontcourt. They don’t have a reliable offensive option in the post. That’s my opinion at least. I may be wrong though.

by JDeLong42 on Nov 11, 2011 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

No your right

He will be able to get layups and dunks and be a incredible defensive precence but not a great scorer. So thats why we need to get a scoring PF or C and then move Biyombo to PF or C depending on what position we drafted.

by TS BOBCAT on Nov 11, 2011 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I thought

Henson, Thomas and Biyombo would block shots and rebound like no other, but none of them can score. The Bobcats biggest problem last year was that they would go through stretches where they just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. Henson wouldn’t help with that. But I could definitely see the Bobcats taking McAdoo or Barnes if the opportunity presented itself.
