What is your opinion on DC Sean McDermott?
Hey there gang. After reading Jaxon's article: Panthers 2011 Midseason Review: Defense, and after spending some time evaluating our defense on film, I have come to formulate an opinion on the job that defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has done so far.
I won't share that opinion right now. The purpose of this fanpost is not to express an opinion, but rather to give CSR members a forum for talking about McDermott specifically, and the defense as a whole.
In general, I think the defense has not really been talked about enough. Neither has the special teams, but that's for another article. Maybe the defense gets pushed to the background because we want to talk about things that make us happy. Clearly those things would be Cam Newton, Steve Smith and the rest of the offense. But I feel like the defense is really the thing that is making us what we are, and that is a 2-6 ball club.

I think he's done as well as he could do, given the circumstances
No DC would look good with horrible DT play and an injury-plagued LB corps. But we’ve seen bits and pieces of games where he’s looked absolutely brilliant like the first half of the Vikings game.
I’d like to see what he could do with a healthy squad.

I voted "He has done as well as he can with our personnel"
It’s not his fault we lost Ron Edwards in training camp, and lost Beason and Davis the first two weeks of the regular season. He’s doing the best he can with what he’s got.
We shouldn’t expect him to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. If we want chicken salad, we’ve got to give him the proper ingredients to work with. If the salad still tastes like shit, then we can talk about running him out of town.

If your chicken sald tastes like chicken shit
Then I’d suggest re-evaluating the ingredients that you’re using.

I think he needs another year to fairly judge.
He is a new coach working with an injury riddled unit that had no training camp. give him another year and we’ll see what he’s made of

As much as I agree that our defensive personnel has been decimated by injuries...
I still think Sean McDermott is underachieving as a coordinator. The greatest piece of evidence to back this up is our inability to stop 3rd down conversions and especially 3rd and 6+. As much as personnel factors into the overall performance of a defense through the game, I believe coming up with stops on 3rd and long is largely on the scheme of the defensive coordinator and how they’re going to attack the QB, etc. Thus far, I’ve been fairly disappointed with some of our schemes.
That being said, I don’t think we should fire him after this year. He deserves at least another year with a healthy Beason, etc. and players that have more experience with his defense. Then we will be able to see McD’s true potential as a coordinator.
I think our struggles on 3rd and 6 have more to do with injuries to our LBs than anything
The Vikings re-exposed what had already been a problem. Without Davis and Beason, we have problems covering the TE. Usually, we have a safety on them. So a well thrown ball that takes advantage of the difference in size is going to hurt us a lot right now.

See, this is where we need a bigger safety.
A guy who is 6’2" and 220 could negate some of that.
Twaa...
wait? it takes 6-9 months for an ACL to heal, which would be ebfore next season. are you suggestiong that we sign someone right now? if so who?
No. Not now. In the offseason.
I’m saying we can’t count on TD. If he comes back and stays healthy, great, but clearly we need to treat the situation as if he is not going stay healthy.

He has done as well as he can with our personnel
For the most part I have been happy with his scheme and playcalling. You could make the argument that if he ran a more traditional cover-2 like Meeks did our players would have less of a hard time learning and adjusting to it, but he wasn’t hired to run that kind of defense. Close inspection of a lot of our defenses shortcomings shows guys simply getting beat in their matchups and making mental errors, whether its a DT not getting off a block or a LB falling behind a TE in coverage or not properly identifying a zone responsibility. It’s too early to really judge McD either way, but I don’t think he is the main problem. We just need our best players healthy and in there practicing together every week.
While we are on the subject of defense.. James Anderson did not practice today due to ankle. When it rains it pours.

I think that with a solid defense McDermott can be a darn fine DC.
He just needs some more pieces of the puzzle (i.e. returning injured players, more depth) before we become a top end defense.

I voted that he has done as well as he can with our personnel.
Honestly, with all of our injuries on defense (I read James Anderson also got hurt today), what more could the man do?

By the way, great idea for a post
I’m glad to see that at least this segment of fans isn’t ready to throw him under the bus yet
McD hasn't really been able to implement his defense this year
After all the injuries, we stopped attacking / blitzing and turned into primarily an assignment / execution defense. That’s not McD’s scheme at all.
Two first round draft picks and two of your top free agent signings are on injured reserve.
That is going to impact any defense. Right now, he’s trying to train young players and keep plugging away until help arrives.
