Panthers pull a switcheroo at DE
Today the Carolina Panthers announced that they have signed OLB Antwan Applewhite and released DE George Selvie. This is very much a move to bring in some familar faces as Applewhite played as a 3-4 OLB in Rivera's system in San Diego from 2008-2010.
In 2010 he started thirteen games for the Chargers amassing 48 tackles and 3 sacks from the position. The 25 year old California native is smaller at 6'3", 258 lbs and I believe he could potentially be a rush OLB on 3rd down situations, while also adding some depth on special teams.
One wonders if this move has any effect on the Panthers' chances of making a trade for Seahawks' OLB Aaron Curry. The move to get a player who has experience as a linebacker coupled with the signing of Kion Wilson yesterday (another Chargers' linebacker) could definitely lead us to believe the Panthers eyes are no longer on Curry (if they ever really were). After the jump we have the career stats for Applewhite.

I don't think this affects the Curry situation.
But that’s, like, just my opinion, man.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I am confused?
Who takes Selvie place in the DE rotation? Have I missed a pick up to replace him?
I like collard greens.
This guy will, IMO.
Big 3-4 OLBs are probably just as comfortable at DE. (Being that that is probably what they played in HS and in college.)

They haven't been rotating DEs much
I suspect that we’ll be likely to see 4 DTs and 3 DEs active on gameday. At his size, Applewhite could fill in if injuries required.
I think this guys gets a number in the 90's and is listed as a full-time DE.
But I’ve been wrong before.

I agree 100%
I think this is actually a DE signing.
This comment section has officially been Tater'd.
Applewhite Is Actually Bigger Than Selvie (6-3, 258, to 6-4, 251) & Faster (4.73-40, 1.62-10 to 4.96-40)
This move could also be a sign that the Panthers may start using some 3-4 sets on defense.
Don’t get too excited about Applewhite, the Chargers let him go as a free agent this year, and he was also cut by the 49ers.

Yeah, I don't get it.
He was playing well. If CJ or Hardy goes down, who replaces them?
I like collard greens.
Norwood? Meh.
I’m not really sure. In the end, it’s not really that big of a deal, so I’m not going to let it bug me. But damn, I reiterate the fact that I liked Selvie.

Ditto. Disappointed, but then again I've been disappointed by other decisions they've made
and turned out to be wrong. Hope they are right.

I don't always dress like a pirate...but when I do, I do it in this picture.
Well let me ask then about Norwood.
Has he been out on the field with the D, because I can’t remember him making any plays out there? I might have missed them but I sure don’t recall seeing much of him. Has he been ST’s mostly this year, and if so how is he doing out there?
I like collard greens.
He's doing okay on ST. Just okay. No one on ST has done anything noteworthy, so...
He has been coming in on defense to rush the passer on longer downs. He has gotten a couple of pressures, but has yet to make any real splash plays.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
Norwood Has Played A Little With A Tackle Or 2, But Not Enough To Give CJ & Hardy The Rest They Need
The lack of adiquate backup DE’s hasn’t hurt CJ and Hardy yet, but it will late in the season, as they tire from over use.
This move could signal a shift to more of a 3-4 defense, with Hardy backing up CJ as well as starting, with Applewhite and Norwood playing the other end when eithe CJ or Hardy are out of the game taking a rest. In that case Applewhite and Norwood could drop back as a 3-4 OLB, with DT McClain sliding out to 3-4 DE.
I don't see a move to more 3-4 sets. Not right now.
I mean, we already line-up in a 3-4 several times a game, but right now, the strength of our defense has to be CJ and Hardy, and both of them are perfect DEs in a 4-3. If it helps to contain the run better, then sure, lets get some more 3-4 looks in the gameplan. But until we draft a 3-4 OLB in the top 10, I’m not really going to lean on mid-season personnel moves to signify philosophy changes.

I don't think this effects the Curry situation much.
Applewood is a back-up and a situational pass rusher. Curry would be coming here to assume a starting spot.
I will note though that Applewood is an OLB, not a DE. He’s been an OLB his whole NFL career.

He's been an OLB for a 3-4 team his whole career, not a 4-3 team.
3-4 OLBs are essentially DEs in a 4-3. You drop a player and you pick a player up to fill his position (like we did with Considine/Hines yesterday).
That’s why we dropped a DE (Selvie) in order to sign another DE (Applewhite).
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I know that
I thought that was obvious. But I’m saying that he’s played 3-4 OLB his whole career, that he’s not a hand-on-the-turf guy. I think that’s interesting that we’d pick a guy like that up.

Being that he is 6'3" and 260...
I’d guess that he put his hand in the dirt in their nickel and/or dime packages, as most 3-4 defenses will often put four men down on the line for obvious passing situations.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I totally agree that Applewhite will be a DE.
I know very little about him, but he’s familiar with the defense, and can play multiple positions (DE, OLB, ST?). BAMF has frequently mentioned how he likes players that can do multiple things, so following this logic, if he can play marginally well, he will be an instant upgrade to Selvie due to his diversity.
Aaron Curry a no go?
After seeing that we have signed two LBs in the past two days I think it’s unlikely that we will trade for Curry. Sure one of these guys might be a DE but even with our injuries another LB would be a little excessive. I know most of us have a soft spot because we saw him dominate at Wake Forest but was he ever really on the teams radar? I think it was more wishful thinking than reality. I might be wrong but maybe were only picking up free agents and guys off waivers and with Curry being benched they don’t want to throw away any potential good picks on him. After all our beloved Steve Smith was taken in the bottom of the draft.
I am glad to see that we are continuing to make moves though. Rivera sounded pissed at his press conference and I was kinda waiting for him to smash the podium. He’s seemed so laid back and easy going up until now but man I would not want to piss that guy off. You could tell he had some guys in mind when he said people were under performing and it looks like we’ve found out about a couple of them. Rivera is not ok with losing or just having a throw away season. He is going to do whatever it takes to make this team better and I’m excited about the years to come. Let’s just hope Jerry and Marty uphold their end of the deal.
I like it
BAMF is kicking ass and taking names.
I can’t say I had an issue with Selvie either, but Applewhite seems to be a decent player who can play DE or LB.
In Rivera’s press conference he basically said that a lot of players are in position to make plays and not making them or that they are out of position and that they need to find guys that will be in position and make the play whether those players are on the current roster or not.
These moves the last few days look to me like an attempt to find these type of players.
The problem I have with adding backup players from SD...
SD was 8-8 last season with the league’s first-rated offense and first rated defense. That tells me that they’re special teams units were atrocious…like historically bad.
These two guys we’ve picked up had a hand in that. On the opening play of the 2011 season, SD allowed Percy Harvin a KO return for a TD—both were on the field.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I think it's a comfort level thing
Didn’t know that about these guys but thanks for the info. i don’t keep up with waivers or free agents or anything so I don’t really know what’s out there but it looks like Rivera is picking these guys up based on the knowing what you’re getting mentality. It definitely seems like we are trying to address special teams with the pickup of Jermal Hines but not sure about Applewhite. Obviously he’s coming from a terrible special teams unit but maybe he was one of the good ones, lets at least hope so. I’m just glad were at least trying to do something and not pulling a Fox and just saying, “oh well, things happen”.
And to be fair (I don't want to sound like I hate this move)...
Its not everyday during the season that a guy with 13 starts the previous year becomes available. Combine that with the fact that RR is familiar with him (as you noted), and this move makes sense.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
Maybe Norv knows he's done
Norv Turner has yet to take SD to the SB and their not looking any better this year. Maybe Norv is hooking his boy up with some players because he knows he is close to getting canned. Maybe he’ll cut loose a stud or two and we can repair our defense and or special teams. Hey, crazier things have happened.
SD has already had a better start this season than the past few...
…it’s hopeful to think Norv is being so altruistic as to help out RR. But lets be honest…SD is in position to win the AFC West right now; no coach would be so kind as to shitcan a part of his team he felt was necessary for a probable playoff run just to give his former DC a chance of winning one or two extra games at the bottom of a division with 2 or 3 likely playoff teams.
As ERL said, I like your “glass half full” view, but I can’t even slightly agree with it.
Good question.
They had four punts blocked. They allowed 3 KOs to be returned for TDS and they allowed 19 yards per punt return.
"Between you, me and the wall here, I had a bit of a doozy myself last night. starting to get confused by some of these moves.
if we’re looking for ST depth, why the hell are we getting an ex charger? i don’t know if SD just haven’t known how to coach ST, or their players can’t execute, but their blocking and tackling are just as, if not more, horrific as ours currently.
Question:
When are we going to stop signing San Diego cast-offs? I don’t like the move. In fact, I haven’t noticed any significant contributions from these specific players at all. I’ve been very impressed with Rivera thus far, however, I’m still waiting for him to turn us into a formidable defense with “no name” players like he supposedly did in San Diego. Since these things take time, I do expect better results in the last half of the season.
SD already had a very good defense with depth when he got there...
…our defense has a few good players, a lot of decent ones, and a few who would be backups on a lot of other squads. RR cut almost all of our interior DLinemen, had a FA pickup lost for the year, had 2 probowl quality LB’s lost as well, and our DB’s are turning into concussion poster boys. I think even expecting more than MARGINALLY better in the second half of the season is asking a bit much.
I think we should all be astounded by the offensive turnaround…lets give it another year or so before the defense can do the same.
Hardy
During pre-season wasn’t there discussion of Hardy playing gunner on punt coverage?
Anyone know if he has been playing at ST, specifically punt coverage?
He's already getting too gassed having to take 90% of the snaps at DE.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I wouldn't doubt his conditioning though...
he’s been reported as one of the most in-shape players on the team, even being able to out run the receivers during their running drills (which really speaks to his conditioning). He’s definitely on the field for Punt returns, and I’m sure he’s on for some situations when it comes to coverage as well…
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
I remember when he beasted those two clowns as a gunner on punt coverage last year.
And made a sick tackle, to boot. That was just silly.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
If The Panthers Want A Big Gunner On Special Teams Then They Should Checkout LB Mario Harvey (5-10 7/8, 257, 4.43-40)
Harvey was a UDFA in camp with the Steelers, and I don’t think he’s currently on a teams Practice Squad. I don’t know if Harvey could be a good special teams player, but he seems to have the numbers for it. He also had 8.5 sacks as a senior last year.
Love that guy.

And in this case...
Applebottom can play defense and ST…George Selvie (while I too have been pleased with what we’ve seen so far) is not really a ST kind of guy. He’s a little too long and lean, and he’s not as good at tackling.
So you swap him for a guy who can do more things in Applebottom.

My thoughts
FS Jermale Hines (6-1 1/8, 219, A Combine 4.68-40, a Pro Day 4.57-40, a 1.62-10) sounds live Double R (Ron Rivera) and company may try and convert this guy from Safety to an Outside Linebacker. Obviously the measurables are there, and if the transition works out well we may have the next Thomas Davis on our hands.
This transition should bolster our Linebacking unit and help alleviate the way we’re getting gashed off the right and left tackles.
"It is now official... Cam Newton is now the face of our franchise.
Applewhite (6-4, 251, 4.73-40) This guy truely has a motor.
Should be a great rotational player. We’ve watched Selvie for a few games and didn’t get much penetration out of him. I loved the way Tampa (I know stab my tongue for saying it) rotates their Defensive Ends to ensure that they stay fresh. Our rotation past the first two is non-exsistent.

Has he lived up to being the #4 overall pick?
Hell to the no, but he’s good enough to start on most teams. I watched the SF game from week one to see how Curry did (before week 2 Carroll decided to start their rookie over Curry) and he did not stand out in a negative way. He gave up a couple of 5 yard receptions to Vernon Davis, and missed one tackle.
Even playing sparingly, he’s averaging 4.5 tackles per game, a pace that would leave him with 72 on the season—in a complimentary/backup role.

Now they HAVE to pick up Curry!
The cats could play Curry and Applewhite at the same time and call it the “Apple-Curry” defense.
It would look a lot like having Lathon and Greene back in the Capers days. Either one (or both) could put a hand down or stand up to complicate life for offensive linemen. One could line outside Charles Johnson on passing downs, which effectively shows three defensive ends. Pull a DT and line Johnson inside and stunt. If both were on the line, the QB could not tell which would rush and which would drop into coverage.
I SAID this team was gonna be fun to watch!
I would like to see more complexity on defense--regardless of personnel.
I understand that in a lock-out shortened offseason, its difficult enough to install your base defense, much less a bunch of sub packages. But to me, we have been pretty vanilla so far, especially for a team who was supposed to be blitzing “70% of the time.”
Hopefully that comes with time. McDermott admitted in his Monday interview with Steve Reed that they sat back too much against the Bears. I’d like us to start crowding the line of scrimmage a little more. You don’t necessarily have to blitz, as guys can drop back from the line, but doing this can create confusing coverages for the QB. We can’t keep allowing opposing QBs to average a QB rating of 96. With the LBs closer to the LOS, we would also be more likely to contain some of the ‘between the tackles’ running plays that have gashed us through the first quarter of the season.

I would actually like to see more simplicity on defense, for now
All of our major problems have been due to disciplined play and mental errors. Those numbers are likely to trend upwards as you add more and more to the fold.
I think it would be cool...
If our players would stay in the damn gaps and tackle the runningbacks! That would be way cool. Can we get some more of those players please?

Get this: A corn-fed harvest mouse, a hooker, a nun, a Flemish peasant woman, whips, chains, whistles yo-yo's, a circus midget. My grandmother riding by on a bicycle giving me the finger, and a duck! Now, I don't know 'bout you...Are you crying?"
