Panthers Game Ball of the Week Fan Poll
This weeks fan poll for Game Ball of the Week is going to be a little tough as their truly are not many candidates beyond the usual stars in my view. This weeks candidates are:
QB Cam Newton - Newton had a very nice passing day going 22 for 35 for 290 yards and 3 TDs. He also added 53 yards rushing on the ground but you will have to overlook the 2 fumbles if you want to vote for Newton.
WR Steve Smith - Smitty continued his Pro Bowl season with 7 receptions for 100 yards and a TD
TE Greg Olsen - My pick for fantasy sleeper of the week put up 4 catches for 73 yards and a TD
CB Captain Munnerlyn - You'll ave to overlook a poorly timed penalty but otherwise Munnerlyn had a good game. He logged 7 combined tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a QB hurry and a sweet tackle on punt coverage.
LB Omar Gaither - Returning from injury Gaither racked up 7 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and a QB hurry.
K Olindo Mare - He did make 3 extra points, we should be ecstatic ;(
So there are your candidates, cast your vote wisely Panther fans!

CAPTAIN! HE WAS ALL OVER THE FIELD MAKING AN IMPACT!

it's hard to say
I gotta give credit to Captain, even on special teams he was ballin. CAM had two costly turnovers, Smitty had that penalty, Gross got beat bad, Nanee balances every catch with a drop or penalty, and I thought Olsen had a drop or two. Shockey is the most hated Panther according to the referees. Overall, I felt we did well shutting down their running game for most of the game, but we should’ve had more than 21 points.
are we holding that fg miss against mare forever?
Lol. CAM… Just cuz he’s awesome and his girlfriend is a slamming hottie

Captain doesn't get it this week imho
Sorry, that penalty at the end of game really hurt a good overall performance, and unless you play all 60 minutes, you don’t get an MVP award.
Don't give up, don't ever give up ~ Jim Valvano
Well in that line of thinking
NOBODY would get a game ball except mybe for Jason Baker.
I mean he punted the ball well for all 60 minutes. Jeez.

Give it to Mare
and tell him he can’t go home until he makes 100 in a row from that distance
actually I voted for Cap’n
My vote is Captain
The strip was the reason we even had a chance to go to ot. I mean smith had a late penalty too even If it was bs.
Random but I heard a new first down chant at the game. Something like that’s another Panthers 1,2 (clap) first down? Where did this come from? Is that even what it is?

Captain's rip & strip of the ball was SICK.
If not for him, the Vikings are 1st and goal on the next play.
I could’ve easily given my vote to Cam or Smith, but Captain gets my vote this week.
Was kinda hoping to see exactly 31 votes for Mare when I checked the results…
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY! I mean, assuming the lockout will end anytime soon...

I hope this game puts all of his naysayers to rest
Captain Munnerlynn is Steve Smith on defense! You take Smitty’s size, tenacity, passion, and gigantic boulder on his shoulder, and put t on a CB and you have Captain Munnerlynn. I was one of the people at the beginning of the season wishing we could have gotten a better #2 CB instead of Munnerlynn. I thought, “Well, he good for his size, but he’s not a real NFL caliber CB”, but I was wrong. This guy is a legit CB in the NFL and I’m glad we got him.

I still prefer him
as a nickle back play maker like we had with Ricky Manning Jr., but he’s played extremely well over the past few weeks.

The Captain gets extra credit for the strip.
Especially since it was on Harvin. Paybacks are a bitch…………..
Mare
@Because now every FG is exciting @
It was a bad miss no two ways around it, but this was a team loss and recovering from a team loss means having faith that everyone will come back better and with a chip on their shoulder.

I give it to Mare
And tell him to go home and practice with it until he can make that fieldgoal blindfolded in a snowstorm with an 85 mile an hour crosswind, barefooted!!!!
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
This year just proves that Smitty hasn't lost a step.
He’s making Pro-bowl numbers in double coverage and is carrying that same chip on his shoulder I’ve always loved about him. I just love to see him get a catch because it doesn’t matter if it’s 1 yard or a 90 yard TD, he’s gonna get up talking trash. That’s the kind of footbal I like to see. Get up in their face and dare somebody to stop you!!!
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
I am very impressed
with the way the team supports Mare…I wouldn’t expect Cam to come to his defense like that! You know since he is a fake teammate (sarcasm)! I like the loyalty our players have…and our future is bright!

I'm giving the game ball to Mare.
Hopefully he takes it and kicks it through the uprights 1000 times to ensure he can do it in a game situation next time he’s needed.

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
I'd give the game ball to Cam Newton again...
Here’s why: 22/35, 290 yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
Yes, he had 2 fumbles, but I put that far more on the O-line missing their assignments than the actual play of our QB. I’m not trying to be an apologist for Cam, but he pretty much did everything he could to win this one. He scrambled when he had to…he put the ball on the money (62.8% completion rate)…he scored all three of our TDs…and he even sacrificed his body leaping for the endzone again on that play where Smitty got called for holding (which I personally thought was a bad call). In addition to ALL that, Newton still drove us down the field and provided a chance for the game-tying FG. So, he did his job across the board as far as I’m concerned. Without him, we wouldn’t even have been in that game, much less had a chance to push it into overtime, given the sheer size and scope of the letdown’s on defense and special teams.
I’ve often claimed that to win a game, you have to win 2 of the 3 phases (i.e., offense, defense, and special teams). Cam was winning his, but we lost the battle (and hence, the game) in the latter two phases. So, my game ball goes to Cam, despite some good individual performances by a few other players. I can’t give it to Smitty or Olsen, since I consider their performances as benefiting in some measure from Cam’s accuracy and decision-making. And I can’t give it to Gaither or Munnerlyn, because, despite their individual efforts, they weren’t able to impact the overall play of the defense or special teams in way that helped determine a favorable outcome. And I certainly can’t give it to Olindo Mare when he missed a chip-shot FG opportunity provided by…Cam Newton.
In my opinion, the only player who comes close to getting the game ball over Cam, would be Munnerlyn. Is it just me, or is that the first time we’ve seen the Captain used on special teams again? If so, he just demonstrated how it’s supposed to be played. And we need to see a lot more of him in that phase of the game. Add in Brandon Hogan after the bye week as a new return man and maybe we’ll start to turn the corner on special teams.
Just my two cents,
—Neil

Once again we get 2 cents that's actually worth about $20. Great stuff Neil, rec'd.

Hogan was reported to be running with the 1’s in practice today and was returning kicks…that depth would really help all across. Captain can go back to playing nickel and him hogan and butler can make a impact in special teams.

Good stuff, Neil
I just got one argument. You said
And I can’t give it to Gaither or Munnerlyn, because, despite their individual efforts, they weren’t able to impact the overall play of the defense or special teams in way that helped determine a favorable outcome.
Well, I would definitely consider the stip that Munnerlynn had an impact on the overall play of the defense. The defense overall wasn’t great, but I think Munnerlynn was one of the only bright spots on a somewhat weak defensive effort. And he also impacted the play of the Special Teams as well. If eveyone played as ell as he did Sunday, we’d be talking about a win instead of a loss.

Ya know
I really wish Smitty would show somw of that leadership he was talking about this offseason. Coming back he said he didn’t have a good attitude before and he wanted to change that. But calling the ref a 70 year old gimp and not taking responsibility for what was clearly a legitimate holding call, it doesn’t look like he really meant it.
Look, I LOVE Smitty, he is probably the greatest Panther ever and I hope he gets in the Hall one day, but right now this young team needs veteran leadership and he’s just not showing it.
The refs established that it wasn't holding on AP's 19 yard TD run
The leniency is fluid based on the refs for the game, and they established leniency but only gave it to one team. Its bullshit.
refs this year have just been awful. Very inconsistent and calling basically what ever they feel like at the time. it is like that all around the league but it has hurt us more then a few times this season..it sucks

I don't disagree with that
My point is that this team is young and they need all the vets to step up and take responsibility. Instead of complaining about the refs, they need to focus on the things that went wrong. They had multiple chances to put this game away and they didn’t do it.
I’m right there with you, the officiating has been pretty bad, but we are no the only team this happens to, there were some horrible calls last night against the Chargers just for an example.
I voted for Cap, for his solid play all game, and his regulation of that punk Percy Harvin.

I voted for Captain
especially after his beast move of ripping the football away from percy harvin(who is a beast IMO minus the headache issues he had been having)
