Rivera Compares Newton's Attitude Towards the Game to Walter Payton

In today's presser with Panthers HC Ron Rivera he compared QB Cam Newton to his former teammate RB Walter Payton (via Twitter)

Rivera compared Cam Newton to Walter Payton in terms of attitude & personality towards football.
Tax-payton-walter_140x105_medium

via www.chicagotribune.com

I can't think of a better compliment Newton has received to date. The best part about this quote to me is the fact no one has the perspective to effectively argue with him. Certainly no other Bears player has coached Cam Newton in his life. The guy has the perspective to make such a comparison. He and Payton were team mates for a number of seasons.

So do think Rivera is just waxing poetic here? He hasn't given me the impression he's one to over state things in spite of being more open and honest than our previous coach. What do you think?

Other news from the presser:
  • LB Jason Phillips will remain the starter at WLB
  • No injury concerns from the Redskins game..Woot Woot!
  • S Jordan Pugh is recovering as expected from a concussion. Sounds like he should be available this Sunday
  • LB Omar Gaither is improving. I'm thinking until he's a full practice he'll be sitting this Sunday.

“The only other player I’ve seen that has that charisma or charm, in my opinion, was Walter Payton,” Rivera said. "I think there’s something about guys like that that are special. They love practicing, they love meeting, they love just meeting here. Walter was the same way…. They both have this attitude about losing — they hate losing. Everything they did was to win. They’ve always been winners… It’s infectious, and you want that type of feeling all the time.

Great stuff...I just came from the PFT article linked above and contrast Rivera's statement with this one
And Nolan Narwocki should be eating these words with a side order of super-sized fries…

""Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and always will struggle to win a locker room. Only a one-year producer. Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable."

Narwocki should find a new line of work because we all know he is a pretender.

Cam Newton is just so beastly. Head and shoulders above any rookie QB this year, he’s already a top 5 QB IMO in the same league as Rodgers, Brees and Brady.

He truely is Jordan like the way he makes the players around him look like hall of famers much like Jordan did.

Stats don’t lie my friend. Cam being a top 4 fantasy QB every week speaks volumes. Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Newton are always top 4 QBs. Cam is 4th overall in passing yds, 3rd in passing YPA and 5th in total QB TDs. If you doubt Cam is a top 5 QB then ask yourself this..,

Aside from Rodgers,Brees and Brady.. Who is a better QB then Cam at the moment?

I have a hole new perspective on Luck staying in school now.

He really screwed the Bills, not us. He did us a favor but the Bills got hosed out of Newton.

And if Luck had declared for the draft imagine the debate we would have had and the backlash had the Panthers taken newton anyway.

I’m betting there is no way Luck touches Newton’s stats (& records) next year as a rook.

I highly doubt he goes the way of Leaf.

He may not end up being Peyton Manning II, no one can really say for sure until he plays, but all accounts point to Luck at least being willing to TRY to be great. He’s got great football intelligence to go along with his obvious athletic talent, and it seems like he genuinely has a good head on his shoulders.

Leaf was just an idiot – he wasn’t willing to put in the effort it takes to succeed in the NFL, and refusing surgery was just a boneheaded non-decision. He shot himself in the foot, and refused to stop the bleeding.

by Neilicus on Oct 24, 2011 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see it

Usually when you talk about top QB busts, you talk about guys who have loads of talent, but don’t really have the smarts and discipline to back it up.

Leaf was talented but dumb. The Pro game is cerebral, and he couldn’t hack it.

Leinart was talented, but undisciplined. He was more concerned with banging Paris Hilton than football.

Luck is going to graduate near the top of his class from Stanford, therefore, he is smart. Luck also has proven to have the discipline to endure a major coaching change and still product at a high level. There also are not many rumors out there flying around about him being a party guy, unlike Leinart.

All things consiered, Luck is a lock.

no way he will be like Ryan Leaf at all

Luck will have a terrible rookie season, as he should, he will be on a terrible team. Had we drafted Luck instead of Cam, I feel Luck would still do fairly well his first season in. Not nearly as well as Cam but still. As awesome as Cam is, we all know that he has a great team in front of him. OLine is excellent, RBs are excellent, and the defense with Beason and TD should have been excellent, but injuries are injuries. We just had TERRIBLE Quarterbacking and horrible play calling last year. Had Cam been on another team, like the Dolphins, I dont think he would be doing NEARLY as well. Although hed still be a freak and awesome regardless, he just oozes talent.

But back to my point, Luck will not implode and be a bad QB like Leinart or Leaf etc, he will go through the “growing pains”and he will do very well once a team gets to build around him. Like Miami will have to. IMO

Manning has won a superbowl but how many times has his team been 13-3 12-4 only for him and his team to come up short in the big game? Manning is the best regular season QB but when you need a win he disappears. I don’t have that fear with Cam if there is any way for us to win he will do it

I think part of that is because Manning was carrying that team to 13/14 win seasons.

When he got to the playoffs though they were playing the cream of the crop and they have enough talent/coaching ability to scheme against him.

Best point you've ever made, IMO.

Exactly what happened.

Newton is more multi-dimensional.

As the Skins, and their above-average defense, found out to their dismay (and the incredulity of Landry and Hall, among others, I’m sure), he can break the back of the best planned defensive alignment, and the tightest coverage.

Now that he’s learning to hit the check-down, and his OL has adjusted their blocking schemes (2nd half, vs one of the best 7-man fronts out there), it is, with our RB threats and TEs (and SMITTY, FGS), it is beginning to be too much to cover. I don’t think 33 will be our season high of point production.

Right on.. I always said we should take Cam even back when everyone thought Luck would declare and I got ridiculed greatly. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. i feel like i have a grip on quarterback evaluations... and when i see Andrew Luck i see....

Chris Chandler.. and that isn’t a bad thing. Chris Chandler made it to a Super Bowl and a few pro Bowls. He could have games where he killed you if you didn’t get pressure. Yet i don’t see Luck as a dominate quarterback at this point because of ONE reason >>> The difficulty evaluation a quarterbacks reaction to pressure and presence in the pocket….

A NFL pocket is tighter and has alot less time…. some quarterbacks are not able to adjust to that instinctively… it is like a running backs ability to have vision….either you have it or you don’t. Pressure could drasticly change peoples perspective on Andrew Luck. From what i have seen he looks rather average when pressured and he isn’t pressured alot…. Newton did not looked phased by pressure in college and that is mainly why i was drawn to him as a prospect because even while all hell was breaking lose around him he stood in the pocket…. I am not sure Luck is playing the level of competion as Newton or is it the first round quality talented LT he has…. or overall lack of pass rushers he has faced or pressure he has faced overall… but he seems like he really hasn’t had much in his face to really evaluate that aspect enough….. to me how a quarterback responds to pressure is more important that what offensive system they have played in.

by Shankdiddy on Oct 24, 2011 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

They might be able to measure vertical and broad jumps, and cone drill times, and Wonderlic scores...

…but they can’t measure instincts, and he has the most phenomenal instincts – at avoiding pressures and tacklers, and sensing how long he can stand in the pocket, that I’ve ever seen. Maybe Fran Tarkenton had as good, but he is a world apart from everybody else I’ve seen in 50 years of watching this sport.

I agree with you in principle, but having seen Luck in person

I have to say, that he looks like a man among boys compared to 99% of QB’s in the NCAA, when I saw him at Duke this past year there was pressure in his face almost every play in the first half (the second half is when the Stanford athletes took over and blew the game out) and he just stood in the pocket and threw darts to his receivers. He was also calling the plays and audibles at leisure. I do think that ol’ Andy Neckbeard is as cerebral a QB as there is, but he can’t showcase that if he is on his back.

If you want perspective, consider this:

I live in Arizona. Before Luck declared his intentions of staying there were a lot of “experts” who said the Cardinals should do everything in their power to get Luck. One even suggested giving up their entire draft AND Larry Fitzgerald. If Luck had come out and we went that route it’s possible we still would have ended up with Newton, plus a ton of potentially great picks; not to mention pairing Fitz with Smith. Buffalo and Denver went D so I don’t think either of them would have gone with Newton. The Bengals went with Green. How incredible would that have been?

Off subject ( I know BW is about to rip me a new one Burke not using the OT thread lol) but did Nanee play at all yesterday or was it all Lafell? Yesterday was more proof Lafell should be our no 2, that dude is just always making huge plays. Hes also a great target for a TD when in the redzone. Like seriously, almost every catch from Lafell results in something huge

b) you’re mentally incompetent
c) some weird combination of both

Naanee played very well yesterday, stat line doesn't tell the story.

3 rec, 21 yds

But he passed the eye test. He caught things thrown his way, and made some great blocks.

I don’t disagree that LaFell looks like the better receiver, but the fact is that Naanee is farther along with his knowledge of the system than LaFell. Now that he appears to be settling in and making the plays asked of him, I see nothing wrong with him starting. LaFell is being effective when asked, and the offense is booming.

Cam made a point about LA that we dont see him beyond the field. What LA does in practice and in the film room has kept him at #2. Him and Steve are coaching the other guys up on how to do things how to prepare..LA more then Smith (he isn’t the motherly type) Sticks will get more balls his way the more plays he makes but right now LA is giving us value that isn’t really measurable.

Right. We hear Rivera and Smitty and Cam lauding what Naanee does, so we should listen to them.

Along with the 2 TEs, we have a very dangerous 5-man receiving group, and it is starting to rival Green Bay’s.

Our top 5 WRs and TEs (Smith, Olsen, Shockey, Lafell, Naanee) have 120 catches, for 1793 yds, an average of 14.9 per catch.

The Packers top 5 WRs and TEs (Jennings, Finley, Nelson, Jones, and driver) have 123 catches, for 1907 yds, an average of 15.5 per catch.

They far exceed us in TD receptions, but consider how many of Newton’s passes have resulted in a receiver being tackled at the 1 or 2 yard line, leading to subsequent rushing TDs.

The Packers, and all the weapons that Aaron Rodgers has at his disposal, are considered the gold standard for offensive versatility – but we’re not far behind them.

I was thinking the same thing last night... so many receptions have resulted in 1st and goal inside the 5.

And on too many of those, we failed to get the TD. I’m not blaming anyone here, just wondering what if say 75% of those had been TDs. I don’t know the number, but I can remember several of them with Smitty and Lafell.

No costly penalties yesterday either

He played solid I thought. No costly drops.

OK, So I'mn thinking this is a great problem to have.

We have two good #2 recievers that could start and be successful. Nannee had a slow start but is steadily improving and making some good catches and LaFell has looked like a completely different player than we saw last year. When Gettis went down, we thought we were in trouble for a #2 reciever and now we have two. It really doesn’t matter who gets the start at this point, they both are becoming solid options on this offense.

Also, I would hate to be the nickel-corner trying to cover a receiver the size of LaFell

That is a mismatch every time.

I was at the game, and for approximately 60% of the routes he ran Naanee was open

But Cam didn’t throw the rock his way. I think Lafell’s big plays are more of a result of good execution and superb playcalling than outright skill.

Love this quote from pft
I predicted in 5 years we would put Cam Newton in the same category as Ryan Leaf. Boy is my face red. I love this guy.

Also, listening to Dilfer gush about Cam this morning on sportscenter elicited a feeling that I have never felt before. I don’t even know what it was but It made me feel very giddy, like a school girl.

There's a name for it, but only in German.

It’s called schadenfreude At least that’s what I’m feeling toward the Trent Dilfers , Nolan Narwockis and Merrill Hoges of the world.

Can't really throw Dilfer in with the other two

Dilfer was on the Cam Train from the time he was invited to and watched Cam’s first “media workout” with the QB Coach George Whitfield. Nothing like the Moron Twins, Narwocki and Hoge, at all.

I finally got to listen to the pressers from these guys.

I love this team even more now. I just got a computer like I said so I was unable to watch them but this team is great. Also, I watched the highlights from Panthers.com and the whole time they are saying how great of a player Cam is.

Go ugly early beat the rush.

Cam is just in a league of his own

Talent, attitude, everything. He’s so different.

Ouch...

I was hoping the initial report of sprained knee (or whatever it was) was accurate. Sucks to be the Redskins now, especially their running game.

Was talking to a friend who is a Packers fan

And I had to ask, “Why didn’t you tell me having a good QB was this awesome!!!?!?”

Reading the comments on PFT, from the Redskins, from the players on this very team, all heaping praise on Cam? Gives me goosebumps. Cam will get us a Super Bowl. There is no doubt in my mind. Imagine that million dollar smile getting even bigger as he’s handed the Lombardi from Goodell on the podium.

It may not be this year, may not be next year, but there just aren’t enough NFL players to keep Cam from hoisting that trophy before too long.

So far, there's just been a bubbling over of love for Cam. I love him, too (no homo).

But this thread is about the CAMparison by Rivera to Walter Payton (RIP, Sweetness). There has never been a more respected or more competitive player to ever suit up in the NFL than Sweetness. Believe me, for BAMF to utter those words after a 7-game sample is just awesome. BAMF played with the guy, and Payton retired as the all-time leader in rushing yards. In my mind, he still is, just cuz I hate the Cowgirls I guess. But if you were to ask Jim Brown whether Payton was a better player than Emmitt, I’d bet money he’d go with Payton.
High praise indeed for our QB, from a BAMF who knows what he’s talking about.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
