Panthers Gash Redskins in 33-20 Win
It is about time the Panthers put it all together. Well, we won't call this a pretty one by any stretch as there were plenty of warts. But conversely the Panthers big play offense did just that, make big plays. The difference this week was the defense. Though they gave up some yards they also got three turnovers in a game for the first time this season.
Star of the Game: QB Cam Newton
As you would expect Newton was key to the offense. He completed a scintilating 18 of 23 passes for 254 yards and a TD. He also added 61 yards on the ground and his 7th rushing TD of the season to really pad his fantasy stat line. His first quarter 25 yard scramble to 3rd and long in the 1st quarter might have been the best play of the game.
Best End Zone Plunge: RB Jonathan Stewart scored from 1 yard out to extend the Panthers lead to 10 points in a critical 3rd quarter score.
Making Them Count: WR Brandon LaFell only caught two balls but they were both big. One for 37 yards to extend a drive and then a 2 yd TD to seal the drive. LaFell also made some key blocks to spring RBs.
Panther Ugly Stat of the Day: The Panthers committed 13 penalties for 105 yards but somehow still rolled the 'Skins. I'm sure we'll have more to discuss on this later.
Catch of the Day: WR Steve Smith caught a beauty of a 36 yard bomb that was perfectly thrown by Newton that put the Panthers at the one yard line. Smith had 7 catches for 143 yards.
Run of the Day: Newton keep the ball on an option play and scored from 12 yards out to open the Panthers scoring in the 2nd half.
The Kraken Was Released: DE Greg Hardy induced a grounding call on Redskins QB John Beck when he was in his grill for a sack and big loss. hardy was truly a monster this day.
Beast of the Day: LB James Anderson did John Beason proud today with his play. He made several key stops and was a total force on defense. 12 tackles, sack, 2 TFL, pass defensed, QB hit is a great day.
Give This Guy an Apple: DE Antwan Applewhite made his presence felt early with a sack and fumble in the 1st half that was recovered by DT Terrell McClain.
Lots more to talk about sure but I'll end this here and open it up for your post-game comments.

At the half I was pretty mad about all the penalties and thought we could have played better but what a second half! We really made some nice adjustments on offense and stopped the run in the second half. (Although they didn’t run it that much in the second half) The only problem I had in the second half was after it was 30-13 our defense gave up way too many easy completions. Other than that good win!

Our run d is actually solid up the middle.
Most of the Skins big gainers were off tackle.

I disagree.
But I do agree that most gains were made outside the tackles both last week, and this one.

still, it was one helluva gesture...
…deflecting the praise to other parts of the offense.
Any lingering questions I might have had about him have been utterly obliterated. He’s a physical freak, accurate, quickly goes through his progressions…and is unquestionably the leader of this offense and the face of this franchise. Hell, the Newton to Smitty connection is in the top 3 for the entire league (only Brady-Welker and Stafford-Megatron seem to be comparable).
This was the biggest gamble in a draft the Panthers FO has ever had…and they knocked it out of the park.
Screw that shit.

Agreed.
I would like to see them come up with a way to better assign blame for INT’s though. Any time a ball is tipped by either a defender or a receiver, it should count as something for or against them respectively. The QB doesn’t always deserve 100% of the blame.

I love that we won but I can’t help but to still be extremely disappointed with the defense. Penalties, bad coverages and just overall horrible defense. Im sticking by what I said that aside from Hardy, Johnson Beason and Gamble, our defense needs a rebuilding. I mean it looks like we just got big guys off the street and asked of they wanted to play defense. Just awful
by PantherTrain on Oct 23, 2011 5:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
The Defense wasn't THAT bad today considering what they've done all year.
No it wasn’t perfect but they did manage to get off the feild a few times during the game. We’ve had trouble with that all season. Now show we use the off season to bolster the “D”? of course, but I’ll take an outing like the one we had today to build off of.

Meh
Don’t get me wrong, I am always a Panthers fan and yes a win is a win.
But to call this a good day on D is like the language you tell a sick person desperately in need of hope.
Yes, glad to see the TO’s and about time. But where is the push, the swagger, the fire that puts fear into opposing offenses? Nobody fears the Panthers D and that is NOT Panthers football.
Last few years it was the O that was the wimpy brother to the tough D, now it’s the D which is looking up at the O. It would just be nice to have quality on both sides for once on a Panthers team.

They're missing their heart, Beason.
And the DTs suck. We’ll take what we can get.
by Panthers FTW on Oct 23, 2011 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't call it good per se
But when they needed to, they got plays in a big way.
The thing is… (and I talked about this months ago in a column I wrote) we don’t know what the Panthers identity is anymore. Or at least we didn’t going into this season. I would still wager we’re trying to find that out. The whole idea that we aren’t playing “Panthers football” is true, but yet not, because the Panthers are no longer the same team we knew under Fox.
It’s a different team with a different focus and a different agenda.
True... But
I thought of that before I mentioned it, but thought that as long as the Panthers had the same owner (and same GM for good measure) they would hold to the same “Panthers Philosophy” of great D and character players.
One need look no further than the hiring of Rivera and the re-telling of Richardson’s pre-draft interview of Newton (Richardson: “You have any tattoos or plans to grow your hair long, son?” Newton: “No, sir.” Richardson: “Glad to hear it.”) to see the philosophy hasn’t changed.
Granted, all this takes time but it’s frustrating to see such a big drop-off in success on D in one year while showing such big gains in O over the same period. And it’s not like they’ve had complete turn-over in personnel, with many of the same players as last year. It’s hard to believe so much heart and fire has been lost with Beason out; Connor’s done well but can anyone say they’ve seen a true leader on D like we had with Beason?
That I think is the source of the biggest problem – a body with no heart.
by stryderusa on Oct 23, 2011 6:58 PM EDT via iPhone app up reply actions
the injuries at LB and having 2 rookie DTs are the main issue with our defense.
once we get beason back, and find a way to get some interior pressure on the DLine, I think the defense looks a lot better. We have 3 defensive coordinators on staff (Rivera, McDermott, Meeks), we should be able to build a dominant defense.

Also want to add
after todays game I would like to see more 3-4 sets bc CJ, the Kraken, and Applewhite all had great games and a 3-4 would get them on the field together
Actually, all were on the field a few times in the 43 defense
Pretty sure I saw Applewhite playing OLB while Hardy and CJ manned the DE posts. So, the 34 isn’t the only way to get them all on the field.
Applewhite as OLB, standing up IS the 3-4.
That’s the alignment we were in (3-4) when he got his FF/sack.
And also, it’s ironic. panthers play like the 8th best defense in the league today and yet we have our highest scoring game of the season.. Go figure
by PantherTrain on Oct 23, 2011 5:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
They were only 8th best because they hadn't played Cam & Smitty yet.

I think my favorite part of the play was when he just kind of pushed Hall to the ground...
that makes two Carolina QBs to have stiff armed Deangelo Hall lol
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
the one thing I gotta give Hall, though...
…after the game, he and Smitty walked up to one another for a hug and helmet pat. I know it’s minor, but I really considered that to be very respectful between two guys who have had bad blood in the past.
Looks like they’ve both matured (well, I KNOW Smitty has…but didn’t know about Hall), and I love seeing that.
Hall was talking before the game about how they've kind of "buried the hatchet"...
but still, F deangelo Hall

He called Cam a pretty Ferrari after the game. Total package. Big fast poised just as Dangerous as a pocket QB as he is a runner. You know a guy is special when EVERY team we play leaves in awe of him. Last year and the year before and the Arizona loss ALL of it was hard as hell to handle it hurt to watch us play on sundays but now….its washing away week by week Cam is healing wounds and putting faith and excitement back into a franchise…its just awesome

I think thats why Stewart should be in the line up more often then not. Rather its running catching or blocking Stew is just on a different level this year then D Will…D Will is getting some good runs in here and there but thats about it. Most of the time it seems he gets stuffed for a 1 yard gain

okay...so it probably won't ever get the youtube and ESPN coverage that the Barber stiff arm did his rookie year...
…but Stewart helmet shoved a Bear defender into the dirt on a carry; and it wasn’t even remotely kind. It was actually rather humiliating. Unfortunately, he only got about 2-3 yards on the carry, so it wasn’t highlight-worthy. But it was the most impressive football pimp slap I’ve seen in quite a while. On top of that, I saw him pick of a blitz, drop low, rise up, and aikido flip the blitzing linebacker like a little bitch.

This reminds me of all the times Vick made absolute bullshit plays against us.
Y’know like where he juked Peppers out of his shoes when it looked like he was going to get crushed, or when he used to drop back, look at his options and just run for a 70 yard TD.

Play calling was great
lots more smart run calls mixed in today and great halftime adjustments to solidify the pressure on the pass rush. There were a lot of dumb penalties in the first half but they shaped up to respectable in the second.
Damn Greg Jennings Literally just walked into the end zone…i mean it was barley a slow trot

I am anxious to see what Locker can do.
I think he will be very good in the NFL. I think Mallett will be very feast or famine in the league. As long as he has an offensive line, he could be one of the best. If he doesn’t, he’ll probably be awful. He just doesn’t have any explosion or fast twitch athleticism.

Cam is probably the most dangerous QB. The dude is a video game character. It’s like someone created him on a video game and put his passing and running ability all the way up to 100 each!
It’s like he has a split personality. One drive he’s a gun slinging Brett Favre and the next drive he turns into the Michael Vick rushing machine.
I can’t ever remember a QB who was so equally dominant in both as a passer AND a runner. It took years for Vick to develop into the passer that Cam is and a argument can even be made that Cam is still the better passer.
Cam is truely a generational QB

His arm strength, when compared to Cam’s, tells the story. Clausen could never make the explosive plays Newton does and he’s got NO escape ability. The offense would have to be totally different, therefore, he’d suck in THIS offense.

The skills he was showing there don’t really translate to the NFL – lots of option plays (pass or run) that sent the D the wrong way. I mean the guy ran for 1k yards, he was carrying the ball an awful lot.
He wasn’t making NFL throws or reads in college. There’s been plenty of guys that have great arms that simply don’t translate to the NFL.
Obviously I’m ecstatic that he is doing so well, but man he was boom or bust – it was either going to click or he was going to be awful. Thankfully we surrounded him with the right ppl and gave him some more weapons.

while its true that its circumstance...
…it makes it virtually impossible for a scouting team. Oldham’s right in that sense, we had to go on our gut and based on the type of person he was and the improvements he showed in 2-3 months.
Exactly what I'm talking about.
That offence tore up college football, but it’s not a pro style offence. Very little of what he was doing there translates to the NFL.
Yes it was circumstance – the OC there has a habit of churning out great offences regardless of who is in the system. He just cranked it up a notch when he realised what he had in Newton. The guys that are currently running the system (Trott? and some other guy) don’t look anywhere near as good – but they’re nowhere near as athletic as Newton. It’s a system that relies on the QB being a runner first which is never good for the NFL.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
very true it made it hard to scout him im just glad we did and we took the challenge. I think Ron did a great job bringing in Chud and Shula to work with him. I disagree… because he was asked to run doesn’t reflect how he would respond as a decision maker..and all arrows pointed up when looking at him as a passer…. atleast i felt that way. He made unique throws.. .he had some moments that made you go WTH…pretty much what you see now… plus pocket awareness and pocket pressence lead me to believe he was much more advanced than any of the quarterbacks in this draft… you can teach a quarterback a offensive system… but you can’t teach them the instinces in the pocket…and you need that in order to be a great passer…. all of this i am basiclly repeating from what i said prior to the draft…..
He had easy throws to make because the D was keying on run.
He had the arm strength and his pocket presence was good – but again part of that is because the D was holding back expecting him to take off.

It's not shady - Manning is that franchise. He has been THAT good for over a decade.
Their D is built to stop the pass – and even then only enough so that the 30+ points Peyton puts up is enough to win the game.
You have to remember that offence takes up the lion’s share of their salary cap. The D is made up of spare parts. You take out that factor and they’re a 2 win team.

A bit like Gates and Gonzalez - he's big and athletic with great hands. Those guys tend to translate well to TE.

I find it difficult to hate Brees too.
Partly cos he’s awesome and he’s come back from a lot of adversity (being dumped by the Chargers after that shoulder injury and having to rework his throwing motion), but also because dammit that pre-game routine/huddle thing he does is bloody awesome.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
not to mention his size. Doug Flute esk. Brees is just a damn good QB size be damned

Yeah but he's really athletic. He's 6'0", but he can scramble if needs be.
Makes a big difference.

yeah i think his arm strength is a lot stronger then he gets credit for..but when your deadly accurate it doesnt really matter

He has a good NFL arm, but it's not elite in terms of arm strength.
He still rainbows the deep balls – but when it’s right on the money it doesn’t make a difference.

Saw it too, doesn't make up for his underhanded style of play

I knew there was going to be a story on Graham...
But I missed it. I had no idea about him being abandoned.
Anyway, when I say “Dang Brees and Graham,” I’m speaking in terms of it being frustrating to have to play them twice a year. I don’t mean it in a personal way.

you just reminded me of the story

The worst part being, Brees is accurate enough to just go "Hey I'm going to throw this ball high and let Graham go up and win it".
It’s basically unstoppable.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
C'mon man Raiders need to score or M. Lewis and P. Thomas need to find a way to get me 10+points
Cuz KC D has 34 points…. 5 Ints… 2 for TDs
The Raiders suck today. Palmer doesn't know any of his receivers or the offence. That game is over.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
DeMarco Murray was awesome in college too. Perfect back for the new passing offences in the NFL.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Speaking of an Oklahoma alum...
I just have to be a homer and briefly celebrate that my Texas Tech Red Raiders made a MASSIVE upset against OU last night…toppling the #3 rated team in their stadium where they had a 39-game winning streak.
Anyway, Murray is really an awesome player.
Okay…back to the Panthers. =)

No wait - so you're a Texas Tech grad?
Cos you keep on mentioning them. What’s the connection?
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
I'm not a grad...
I went there for law school because of a scholarship…but I just couldn’t stand being there for a multitude of reasons and left after about a year and a half. So I transferred to Charlotte. Then I decided that I hated law school and I’m now working on nursing.
Anyway, I didn’t know crap about football until I decided to give it a try at Texas Tech. And I fell in love with the game (and that’s the year that they were really good – 2008). So my heart will always be with Texas Tech football. =)

Ah ok that makes sense.
I wouldn’t want to live in Texas either. ;-)
And TT is the Air Raid stuff, right? They don’t get on tv much over here.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Yes...they're VERY pass happy.
It started under Mike Leach, but Tuberville has kept the offensive scheme essentially untouched. The only difference is that Tuberville realizes that RBs and TEs do exist and they get more playing time.
And Tech doesn’t get much air time outside of their region, so I don’t get to watch them that much unless I can find them online. I decided that I had to adopt a secondary college football team to root for – one that I could actually watch on TV on a regular basis…so I’ve adopted South Carolina as my secondary team.

They were not happy…TT was burning OU’s corners all night. But Panther related, I want to continue my campaign for drafting Ronnell Lewis from OU. He is just beastly
They were just running WR screens, right? I saw a little of it.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Impressive stuff from the rookie for sure
Emmitt Smith has the Cowboys single game rushing record of 237 yards. DeMarco Murray needs 3 yds today to break it.

I am firmly on the Barry Sanders side. Although I just hate the Cowboys in general
What was wrong with Smith? He took advantage of being in a great situation, nothing wrong with that.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Not so much him
I just hate people think he’s one of the greatest RBs of all time, and yeah he’s got the stats, but it wasn’t him so much as his amazing line.
I agree
Barry Sanders will always be the best RB in history in my opinion. What he did in Detroit with a bad offensive line was unbelievable.

Redskins fan here
It looked like the refs screwed the pooch on a lot of calls, Rivera looked like he was going to shit a brick when that ref screwed up the field goal attempt. Anthony Armstrong complained that the Carolina DBs got away with a lot of pass interference calls (probably just bitching after a loss), did anyone of you guys notice that?
Good game by the way, Cam is a beast!
The officiating was horrendous, most notable was the non-reversed 2nd challenge (freeze-frame it on DVR)
Gamble is very good at timing breaking up passes and had four of them that game, AA is just being sore. Two of our offsides were non-call false starts too. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some helpful ones that went our way but you know how that goes, you’re only really watching them for your team intently.
The officiating has been awful all season - across the whole league.
I think the Panthers have had some BS calls against them, but we’ve also had some go our way (and some non-calls).
Anyway, I really do think that there were several instances where it was a pretty close call as to whether PI should have been called against Carolina.
Yep. I'm a female who religiously follows a football blog.

Shush! PI should only be called if the DB mounts the WR.
Otherwise let them play, dammit! (what, I’m a defensive guy! =P)
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Yeah see I'm ok with that.
Especially when you’re putting out 6’3" 220lb WRs out there. Let the guys get physical. Otherwise it’s just a track meet.

Well I think I lose fantasy this week lol
35 points by KC defense….. unreal
Minny has me a bit worried for next week
Not liking the additional passing to go with AP
Yeah Ponder has opened things up for them. Still looks like a rookie though. Should be fun.

It sure is great to finally have a QB
I thought that was illegal in Carolina… But apparently not.
STEVE SMITH!
We sort of had one in Delhomme.....when Smith bailed him out.
We’ve never had one that I’ve felt confident with though.

I hated Delhomme, not gonna lie.
He’s basically a slightly better Moore, or Brett Favre without the legendary arm.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Jake was clutch, what made him good was his ability to rally people and come back and win.
He didn’t have all the talent in the world, but he had passion.
i hated the later years…lot of jake hate comes from type of football we played..Look at Denver today..Fox football gives you chance to win it or lose it at the end. Jake came through more often then not till the back end of his stay here. Then it all just went to shit

yup and we havent had a offense to do that in forever. Was so nice to see us put up 30+ today…The defense has said they think we can score a lot of points so the are excited. We hold teams to below 20 we can win every game

I’m not too worried about the Vikes. Our attacking and running offense should torch their suspect defense. Peterson will gash us for the 1st half then the 2nd half we shut it down. Ponder will look solid but it’s only his 2nd game and now we will have solid film on him.
I say we beat the Vikes rather easily.
by PantherTrain on Oct 23, 2011 7:31 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
we shut down Peterson last time we played them
i wanna say he had 30 something yards when we played them in 09. and then J-Stew blew through their D
Moore's finest moments as a Panther.
He was unreal during those last few games of that season.

It didn’t help. I’ve searched everywhere. It appears that I am not the only one to ever have the problem. Unfortunately, I can’t find where anyone has ever been able to fix it. There was one fix that I found that had something to do with the “no sandbox option”, but I am not nearly advanced enough to figure out what that meant or how to do it. I’m willing to try anything though.

Smitty is a beast; he's the whole reason why I became a panthers fan as a kid.
It’s nice to see that he’s becoming a role-model to the rest of the receivers. As I watched Cam’s post-game press release, I noticed that he said that Brandon Lafell has been obtaining a lot of tutelage from Steve Smith. Also, on another video or post, I read a quote of Lafell stating that Smith instructed him that it was all about making plays with your hands and apparently Lafell is taking his advice to heart, as he has exhibited a nice pair of hands and catching ability throughout the season.
