Panthers Who Need to Man-Up Fan Poll
The Panthers are 1-5 and seem to find new ways to lose every weekend. The reasons for the lack of wins are many and you can't point the finger at any one player. Panthers HC Ron Rivera likes to count the number of impact plays each of his players puts up. What if we could pick one player to drastically improve his play in our game against the Redskins? So with that introduction I have a fan poll to pick the Panther in most need to 'Man Up' this Sunday if the Panthers are to beat the Redskins. Though I could pick every starter I'm going to limit it to five. Which of these five players most needs to Man Up Sunday:
1. QB Cam Newton - There is no denying Newton has thrown critical interceptions that last two losses. If he can eliminate these critical mistakes it would most likely mean more points on the board
2. DT Sione Fua - There is no hiding the fact the Panthers rush defense has been porous and that usually starts at the point of attack. Fua is responsible for holding that point of attack and occupying multiple blockers.
3. LB Jason Phillips - Phillips is getting his first start for the Panthers at WLB and will be critical to stopping the run as well dropping into coverage on TE Fred Davis. Should Phillips 'Man Up' he could fill that spot for 9 more games.
4.WR Legadu Naanee - Though he had two nice catches last week he also had a critical holding penalty. Naanee will continue ot get targets and if he could pull down 5 or 6 passes he could be the wild card on 3rd down we need.
5. PR Armanti Edwards - Though I think the Panthers can beat the Redskins without any help from special teams it sure would make things easier. Starting each drive around the 20 yard line or worse every series makes things harder on the young rookie QB. This would be a great time for Edwards to Man Up and make an impact because he is due.
Take the poll after the jump...

Don't get me started Jaxon...
You know damn well that Armanti has no room to run whatsoever. If he can get some blocks, he can make things happen. Until then… be happy he is catching the ball cleanly.
As to who should man up… Sione Fue, and it’s not even close.

I haven't seen his games, but I'd bet he had enough to get started.
Edwards has 4-5 tacklers right in front of him as the punt is being caught. No amount of speed or elusiveness can get away from that.
The usual picture is of our guys peeling back after the punt, racing alongside the opponent’s gunners, but rarely getting ahead of them to make effective blocks. It’s all random and haphazard and unplanned. I thought that the new ST coordinator had a good history of teaching his guys. but I’ve not seen a single ST play yet this year that indicates he knows what he’s doing.
And when one or more of our guys does make a block on a PR, it’s usually
‘in the back’ and we march back to worse field position.
I can’t offer a solution to this problem; just pointing out that it’s NOT the fault of the PR himself, but of his lack of effective blockers.
Then, on the other side of the spectrum, you have Jason Baker, who has about the worst net punting average in the league – he’s lost all distance in his leg.

That last point of yours definitely strikes a nerve with me.
Wtf has happened to Baker? Am I imagining things, or was he one of the best just last season?
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for '11 DPOY!
He had a lot of practice last year
I think he just may be bored this year.
He also is not being helped in the net avg by our coverage team.

True, but he hasn't backed up any PR men, so far as I recall.
“Booming” and Baker haven’t yet been used in the same sentence.
he's been using the rugby punt in order to remove kickoff returns, according to Rivera
Rivera said after the Chi game that they’d been doing it a lot already. Shorter kick, more hangtime, more time for the gunners to get in position and less room for error.

I think Bell will...
He’s got a huge heart and is ultimately thankful. Bell will man-up, whether it be physically driven or emotionally, the kid will.

Been watching Bell on pass protection. He's not bad.
He graded poorly in the Atlanta game, because of penalties, and allowing 1 sack.
But he’s still raw, and learning. He effectively blocked Ray Edwards on many plays, and looks to move his feet well, for a RT, which is key. He’s got the size to fend off the bull rush, and I think with experience, he’ll develop the techniques to defend the other moves. As a comparison, Schwartz and Garry Williams are too cumbersome and sloppy with their feet to ever fill the assignment.
Bell has the motivation, the humility, and the confidence of his coach and his QB. And he’s got a lot of raw skill to be developed. He is NOT a turnstile or a matador.
I thought about putting him in there...
but he’s been playing and has started already…was thinking for a UDFA rookie he is playing well.
I think Dan Connor's the one who has to man up.
You’re supposed to be a tackling machine, Dan. Make some damn tackles! And do it at first contact, not after an 8 yd gain.

He's playing himself out of a contract extension.........and I liked Connor coming out.

I hope it changes, and he improves, but he looked lost out there on most plays last week.
In the RZ, he has the heart to jump the pile, but is usually lost in space, on play action passes, or runs up the gut. Huge drop-down in talent from Beason.
Yep I change my vote to Connor

I'm probably the biggest Connor fan on this site
But I’ll agree. I don’t think he’s been as bad as people have been saying (it isn’t his fault he’s replacing a possible HOFer in Beason) but he certainly hasn’t stepped up. I really thought he’d play his way into a starting role, and so far he’s not doing so.
I think it might have something to do with the defensive scheme though. Connor excelled in a “bend don’t break” defense in college, and he looked good ina similar defense previously with the Panthers. I’m not sure he has the speed to succeed in a heavy blitzing defense where he might need to cover more ground. I’m hoping he can still pull it together, but right now he definitely is underperforming.
Woah, I'm a huge Canes fan and even I don't think Beason is a potential HoFer.
He’s excellent, don’t get me wrong, but he’s not a legend.
Penn St just play fundamentally sound defence don’t they? I guess not doing anything rash would come under a “bend don’t break” defence….
And yes I thought he was ready to start last year too. I honestly think this injury has sapped some of his athleticism.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Beason is the best 4-3 MLB in the league - I think he could put himself in the discussion for the HOF if he has a long career
As far as Penn State’s defense, they are definitely “bend but don’t break.” They do play fundamentally sound, and they lack any heavy blitz packages. The thing that drives me crazy with their defense that on 3rd and 3 the corners play 8 yards off the line.
I’m not sure why a bone chip would sap athleticism, but I agree. He definitely looks a bit slower to the ball than he did last year.
I'm with ppfcpp on this one
Jon Beason is definitely a POTENTIAL HOFer. The guy just epitomizes toughness and he is very well respected in the league. I also agree that he is the BEST 4-3 MLB in the league, too. I won’t be surprised if he dons the gold blazer when he retires. (Of course all of this is predicated on his return from the Achilles injury)

Sins of the past..
Honestly a lot of our young guys need to step up but i blame John Fox and the old staff for this. Rivera is still paying for the sins of the last regime. Our depth has always sucked it seems and thats because rather then coach up a talented rookie Fox and co would rather slide in a vet who requires little teaching. The loss of OTA’s and mini camps hurt us more then any team in the league and im not saying that because we are 1-5 and trying to make excuses. When you have a roster full of young guys who have never been taught proper technique or how to play at this level you are going to struggle. We are now in the tail end of October and are still trying to teach things we would of got across in early August. Guys need to step up and play better but honestly the ceiling isn’t but so high for some of them. This staff has did a decent job of bringing in guys like Phillips who will be starting on Sunday and Applewhite who made some plays last week against ATL and Butler to fill in some gaps in our depth. Our starters have always been solid but the players behind them have been lackluster and unprepared. Rivera is paying for that as is this team who is trying to get over that hump. It will be fixed holes will be filled and wins will come….The way i like to look at it and help me get by is this season is the education and preparation for our future domination. GO Panthers!

I know this "young" team doesn't want to use young as an excuse anymore...
…but the fact remains that, before the season started, a lot of us thought they’d start out making a lot of mistakes, then improve as the year wore on, by learning from their mistakes, and coming together as a team.
I still think that’s going to be the case, and that we’ll win games in the second half of the season, as experience kicks in its lessons.
Before game 1, I thought we’d maybe have 2-3 wins by now, but I never thought we’d be so competitive in every single game, not have the lead in so many. It’s just been 2-3 plays in each game that’s kept us from leading the division. As a fan base, we shouldn’t be discouraged. Good things are coming. Even with all our injuries (4 starters on IR is no joke) I look for the Panthers to expose Washington as the far inferior team Sunday. John Beck is somewhere between Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore, and after reading that Greg Olsen is looking forward to helping him to fall down regularly, I relish the thought of this upcoming win.
Im sure Olsen wants Beck to be knocked down too lol

Our D has been unable to contain the swing passes, and the runs to the edge, all year.
That’s largely been a function of all the subs we have to shuttle around at LB. Because they’re always playing a new combination, there’s been no coordination, and they don’t honor their gap assignments and are often out of position.
Great Point"Big D", If Jason Phillips Starts At WLB It Worries Me
Jason Phillips (6-0 3/4, 242, 4.69-40) is a backup MLB, and played MLB at TCU, so he may help against the run, but I worry about him against the pass.

If only there were an "ALL the Panthers on Defense" option...
Although I do agree Cam needs to avoid some of those mistakes, I (with great respect to Jaxon) don’t think Cam should be in the Top 5 of guys that need to man-up. He’s had some costly mistakes, but we cannot depend on a rookie to make up for one of the most unreliable and score-ridden defenses in football.
If that defense can ever perform, I think Cam can play a little more relaxed and avoid some of those mental errors.
"Buy the ticket, take the ride" ~ Hunter S. Thompson
i think if Chud would run the ball more with Dwill and Jstew coming on it would relieve some of that pressure…but im of the assumption we are doing Cam like the Colts did Manning. Letting him live and learn this year for better and worse in hopes it leads to grand development during and after the season and we hit the ground running in 2012.

Six degrees of separation... I like that.
More separation than some of our DTs have, and that’s a lot.
I think between Davis and Gaither came one of the Williams' boys, but only for 1-2 quarters.
The revolving door keeps hitting them in the knee or the head.
Fua, no question
If we stop the run, we force them to throw. And this is John Beck, he who has started fewer games than Cam Newton, and was #2 on the depth chart behind Rex Grossman.
If this becomes a shootout, we will win.
Fua in a landslide.
I just looked up his stats, and was surprised to find that he has more tackles than McClain (granted, that’s not saying much). I’d be absolutely ecstatic to see him stuff a runner in the backfield or get his hands on a quarterback.
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for '11 DPOY!
DTs don't tend to rack up many tackles. It's all about controlling their man and filling the hole.
Fua isn’t doing either.

Chud is in love with Cam's arm.
I think Chud needs to be more consistent with the running game. I understand that the O-Line is not creating sufficient running lanes for D-Will and J-Stew. But its what, like week 7 and the runnig game needs to getting going again. Chud needs to be more consistent and more disciplined.
Also don’t you guys think that we need a legitimate #2 receiver. Cam throwing these Interceptions because he only has Smitty who he trusts will bring the ball down. LaFell doesn’t run precise routes or gets any separation. Nanee doesn’t do anything a WR should do particularly well either. I understand that BAMF and Chud are using this year to develop Cam into a Pocket Passer, and suffice to say that it is pretty obvious that he can thow the rock 35 to 45 times a game without difficulty in the pocket. So they need to get someone else for Cam to throw to as a remporary solution. I have an idea! make G-Reg a TE/WR. Could that work?
We need a legit no 2 WR
But it’s far from our biggest need.

Obviously that is something we need to adress
next year, especially if Rivera is going to continue to nurture Nanaa and forsake the real potential talent in LaFell.
But the offense isn’t losing any games for us. If we want to win now, which I am beginning to wonder about, we need to fix the D and ST. ST should be the easiest and quickest. They play football like a retirement center flag team. I mean our guys look like they are running an escort for the other teams gunners. Its unbelievable.

Tough call
between Naanee and, believe it or not, Cam Newton. Naanee is a bit obvious, he just screws us at the most inopportune moments and obviously the coaching staff for whatever reason is gonna keep going to him and keep Lafell sidelined. “Legs” performed a little better last week, but that’s one game out of six so he’s batting .166 on decent games, which is no good.
The reason I say Newton is because, as great as he’s been, he hasn’t capitalized on his opportunities to win games. He’s getting the ball in his hands with a chance to make game-winning drives and just not getting it done. Take last week for example: even before the screen pick we had a chance to drive the field and take a 2 TD lead that would have likely put the game out of reach, but we punted instead. The week before we had a chance to make a drive to take the lead, but instead gave the ball back to Brees with a few minutes left in the game, which is usually a losing situation. Btw, don’t even get me started on that 3rd and 2 call…wtf. Also, Cam needs to stop going to LN if LN can’t make the necessary plays. It’s kind of escaping me now, it was either Rodgers or Brees, but I think it was Brees where he threw a ball to Moore I think and Moore dropped it. Brees gave him this look like “I could kill you” and just practically ignored him for the rest of the game. Cam needs to hold these guys accountable and go to who is reliable; Naanee has proven to be unreliable and often doesn’t even seem like he cares.
It would obviously be nice if Fua played better, but what can you really expect from a rookie DT who we got at the very bottom of the third round. As far as punt/kick returns go, I think we are doing alright when we do return it, but it’s hard when you’ve got multiple guys coming at you unblocked as AE/Pilhares often do so it seems like it’s the rest of the special teams unit that needs to step up.
On a side note: I’d add Chudz to this list. He makes some pretty bone-headed play calls. The fact that we ran the exact same play on 3rd and 2 last week as we did the week before, the play that gave Brees back the ball and lost us the game, makes me think he’s not learning from his mistakes. What’s the point of getting in 3rd and short situations if we aren’t moving the chains? Why would you risk giving the ball back to Brees with that much time left on the clock? Is that really the spot to be taking a stab down field? Move the chains and we can at least leave him with a minute less to work with. It’d be nice to be balanced. Seems like we’ve gone from one extreme to the other: ultra conservative → overly aggressive.
Our Defense needs to get off the field
We have a tendency to let the other teams offense sustain drives in the 4th quarter. We need to get our defense off the field on third down, especially on third and long. That would consist of Sione clogging the middle and we need to get pressure on the QB. For example, in the Saints game, we had them 3rd and 10, when they first got the ball, and allowed them to move the chains.
It’s easy to critique the play calling after the fact, especially because we know it did not work. That being said, sometimes it is easy to out-smart yourselves. I do agree where we go from one extreme to another. We try to run it up the gut or hit the home run to Steve Smith on a fly route. If we could get some mid-range plays. I am happy to see us running screen plays, I don’t think a screen pass was even in the playbook last year.
Cam has played better than I thought he would thus far. We need him to keep on leading this team. We need him to instill confidence in the whole team. Game 1, everyone was feeding off of his energy and confidence. Brees is an idiot. Favre would always go right back to a receiver after a drop. This would not allow them to dwell on a dropped pass. Let’s face it, we need all of our receivers to be making plays, catching passes.
On defense, we lost Beason to IR. He was the leader of the D, we need someone to step up and fill that role. It doesn’t have to be a LB. Our defense needs to get fired up out there. They need to be looking for blood, have the other team want to get off the field.
This week, versus the Redskins. We need to use our strong suits. We have a small, fast defense. We need to attack. You can never attack too much in response to the earlier post. John Beck is untested, we need to stop the run early. Shanahan likes to run the ball. We need to make them one dimensional. Then we can tee-up and meet at the QB with endless blitzing. (See all of last year’s game film of how we got beat with Clausen for proper execution of strategy).
What I meant was
we went from ultra conservative (as in last year/much of the Fox era) to overly aggressive this year. I think maybe we just have different views on how to handle WRs, Brees has won a SB though and consistently makes his mediocre WRs look like all-pros so I wouldn’t say he’s an idiot in that sense b/c whatever he does obviously works. Maybe if Naanee had dwelled on his crappy play earlier he wouldn’t have cost us as many drives. Who knows, but it was 5 games of him giving up on routes, dropping balls, etc. versus now one game where he did a better job hanging on, so it’s not like it was working out for us to keep going to him.
After the fact, during the fact, whenever, that play call sucked. 3rd and 2 should be nearly automatic with Cam, not to mention we’ve got Shockey, Olsen, DeAngelo, and JStew as well. 3rd and 2 should be all day. 7 minutes left, 4th quarter, 4 point lead, Drew Brees waiting on the bench=NOT the time to stab deep. It was just a stupid call and it cost us the game imo.
And yeah, those injuries to Beason and Davis hurt a lot more than just production on the field, they were definitely the two vocal leaders of the defense and Davis especially could get the guys amped up. It’d be nice for somebody to step up, but it doesn’t seem like we have any guys right now who fit the bill…maybe Steve Smith can start playing CB too…and return punts.
Defense/ST
I’d have to say both of these units are the ones that need to man up. I can understand we’re a young team; I can understand we’re gonna make some bone-headed mistakes as a result. But for the love of God, they’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to the bone-headed mistakes.
Defense: Our run defense is atrocious, mostly because we can never get the containment we need outside (or inside, really, for that matter) from the front seven. Couple this with a rather suspect secondary at times (and by suspect, I’m looking at you tackle-missing safeties, Godfrey and Martin), and it’s little wonder we’re suffering so badly. Something has to give, and soon.
Special Teams: Of all the special teams, Armanti is about the only one I can give a pass to — you can’t do anything when the rest of your squad refuses to block (unless it’s from behind so that any return can be nullified).
As far as the offense goes, if there’s anyone there that needs to man up, it’s Naanee. I could care less how much “better” he knows the system and assignments — in that case, give him a headset on the sidelines. Naanee has cut short God knows how many drives because of his penchant for trying to be a full-body catcher’s mitt when he does make the occasional catch, and has been supremely underwhelming as a WR.
Cam shouldn’t even be on this list: he’s a rookie QB thrust into the spotlight right out of the gate. Yet he’s also been nothing short of electrifying ever since the start of the regular season — he’s done everything he can possibly do that’s been asked of him, and he’s looking like the second coming of Peyton Manning in the process. I daresay the main reason we’ve managed to stay so competitive and keep games so close (aside from this past week’s loss) has been because of Cam’s own drive and determination. If anything, I suspect we’ve come to expect too much out of Cam because of his rather un-rookie-like (if that’s even a word — if not, I just invented it) performance. Yes, he makes rookie mistakes, but that’s to be expected, and the video game numbers he’s posted so far has wow’ed and blinded everyone to the fact that he’s still a rookie when all is said and done.
If there’s anyone else I would pencil in (and this one might be unpopular, but let me explain before you lynch me) to man up… it’s Brandon Lafell. Now, don’t get me wrong: Lafell has been the definition of clutch (I looked it up recently to see the meaning of the word, and the first definition was see Brandon Lafell) when he’s had his opportunities. The reason I say he needs to man up, though, is in his knowledge of the system — the sooner he shows that knowledge as second nature, the sooner we can see him as a bona fide #2 — at least for the remainder of the season — and move Naanee off somewhere else, preferably where he doesn’t have to be a target on the field.
I'd like to write in Otah
But you can’t man up from IR. Definitely need a tackle who is not made of china. Bell is a great story but if you had said he would be the starting tackle three months ago, I would have shouted for the guys with the white coats.
I voted Fua, but I'm not sure he's the answer
Fua hasn’t done any worse than I expected him to. He’s actually been decent against the run (a lot of the big rushes have been to the outside) but he has had zero presence in pass pressure.
Really I can’t understand how anyone has said Cam. He’s performed leaps and bounds above what anyone has expected. Has he failed in some key situations? Sure. But let’s be honest, he’s had way more pressure on him than he ever should have. Over time I expect him to step up, but I think it;s really unfair to peg him as the guy who needs to step up when he’s been so good for us already. Maybe if this was his second or third year, but I couldn’t ask for more out of ANY rookie – let alone one who was supposed to take 1-3 years to acclimate.
If forced to ask who needs to step up out of anyone, I would say McDermott. I’ve said it before, but I’m quite underwhelmed by him. I think his play designing is fantastic, but his timing for calling said plays has been very poor. If he could put his play-calling together a little better, I think we’d have a mid-ranked defense. And right now I’m convinced that a 12-15th ranked defense – combined with our offense – would put us at 3-3 at worst.
Actually The Panthers Defense Is Ranked 16th Overall, It's Just That The Rush Defense Is 31st
It seems crazy, how can the Panthers be out gaining their opponents by 58.9 yards a game, and be 1-5?

For those saying Cam needs to "Man Up"
MANNING (1998): 113-210 (53.8 percent), 1,346 yards, 6 TD, 14 INT
NEWTON (2011): 134-229 (58.5 percent), 1,847 yards, 7 TD, 9 INT
This isn’t including the hectic off season or the 200+ rushing yards and 6TD’s on the ground
Could Cam make better decisions at times? yes…but honestly at this point he is on pace to shatter the way we view rookie QB’s.

I love this post "Man up" Jaxon and this should done everyweek.
and BW should do a “Beat down” post that goes up after the game of the player you want to beat down the most after the game.
My Vote – was Eric Norwood… he should definately man up being on the team the entire season and he barely catscratch(I know you like that) the statistical catagory. 4 solo tackles and 3 assisted in 6 games. Steve Smith has 3 solo tackles and he plays offense!!! In an effort to spell Hardy & Johnson in the Defensive end rotation he’s definately going to have to be more effective so the team can sustain pressure on the Quarterback. And hustle your A$$ off on special teams!!!
Eric Norwood “MAN UP!!!”
"It is now official... Cam Newton is now the face of our franchise.

Agreed
Great article. It should be run every week. Not just as a “blast the guy who F’d up last week” kinda thing, but as “the guy who needs to step up this week”, kinda thing.

I voted for Naanee
To me it’s a no-brainer. Yeah, Fua could be argued, but the dude is a rookie and he was essentially a 4th rounder. I expected him to struggle a bit, as we all did. Naanee, however, is a veteran receiver who was brought in to help the receivers learn the system and to be the de facto #2 WR. He is great at gaining separation, but man, that dude needs to learn how to look the ball into his hands. His fundamentals are VERY weak for a multiyear veteran on last year’s number one offense. He seriously needs to spend about 2 hours a day with the JUGGS machine and work on his catching skills. I can easily think of at least 5 drops or stumbles that could have won us games.
Hey, Naanee, if you’re reading this, MAN the F up, and catch the damn ball!
