Panthers Fall to Bears 34 - 29

The Panthers had their chances in this game but once again too often settled for FG attempts once in the red zone. It's hard to pin this one on any phase of the game though. The defense was gashed repeatedly early but only gave up 13 points until the garbage TD at the end.. Special teams gave up a TD on a punt return and Cam Newton threw his first pick 6. No I think all three phases of the game share in this loss Panther fans.

Here's some recap quick hits:

  • QB Cam Newton finished 27 for 46 for 374 yards 1 TD, 1 INT but two rushing TDs. Newton is our most reliable scoring play inside the 3 yard line
  • WR Steve Smith had 8 receptions for 181 yards... but most were in the first half
  • WR Legs Naanee seemed to have a bazzilion passes thrown his way and he caught three of them for 18 yards
  • The Panther running game showed improvement with 134 yards between RBs Williams (10 for 82) and Stewart (8 for 52)
  • SS Charles Godfrey got his first INT of the young season on top of 5 tackles and a pass defensed...more after the jump...

Star-divide

  • DE Charles Johnson got a sack for the 4th straight game.
  • LB Dan Conner led the Panthers with 8 tackles but the Panther defense gave up 205 yards rushing to Bears RB Matt Forte
  • The Panthers committed 8 penalties for 52 yards, some at the worst possible time.
  • Carolina for 2 for 12 on 3rd down...again an area they struggle
  • Panthers won the TOP battle 33.5 minutes to 26.5

Let's hear from you Panther fans...how do you feel about this one?

Our playcalling inside the 25 is going to drive me insane.

I’ll have more rational thoughts later.

Toughest loss yet

Way too many mistakes, but so much good to take from it at the same time.

I am too

I get that we have flaws and a rookie QB and stuff, but when we are in every game, we have to win them

So Dwill finally has a game, and runs for like 8 ypc

And we still abandon the run… why? We have 2 1st round RBs in our back field… They could have ran us to a victory if used properly today.

I'm really, REALLY angry at Chudz playcalling in the 2nd half...

he kept going to the same pass plays, expecting them to keep working; Why we stopped running the ball when we were beginning to keep their D on the field is beyond me!

D-Will Finished With 10 Carries, For A 8.2 YPC & J-Stew Had 8 Carries For 52 Yards

D-Will averaged 8.2 YPC
J-Stew averaged 5.2 YPC
Cam averaged 4.4 YPC, with 2 TD’s

The 2 RB’s averaged 7.4 YPC (18 carries for 134 yards)

If you inclused Cam’s rushing stats (8 carries for 35 yards), then the Panthers averaged 6.5 YPC

169 total yards rushing is pretty good, and the YPC’s are great.

The Panthers running game seems alive again, The 1st half, and until midway through the 3rd quarter (runs to start the 3rd quarter, 20, 9, and 16 yards, only 1 carry by Cam for only 2 yards was the only carry under 4 yards in the whole 3rd quarter) the play calling was much mre balanced and less predictable than last week. The score was largely responsible for taking away the 4th quarter running game.

I think he is one of the best in the league. However, we have not used him enough to warrant his resigning and it doesn’t look like we plan to. So….as much as I want to disagree, you are right; he should have been let go.

Naanee Finished With 4 Catches For Only 27 yards & Am I the Only One Who Thinks He Should Have Caught that Int?

Granted, Naanee did get hit in the back by the 2 defenders, but the ball wasn’t greatly over thrown, it hit his hands, and he wasn’t fully stretched out as he reached up.

I feel ok about the game with the exception of...

this game being very win-able. We just couldn’t catch a break from shooting ourselves in the foot and getting Effed in the A by the refs. I know every fan complains about calls not going their teams way – but seriously, it was bad today.

I knew ST would be the deciding factor in this one

I don’t know why BAMF and Chud have a man crush on Naane, but he wasn’t catching jack in this game. LaFell is the better option despite stumbling on his route in the endzone early in the game. The one positive I will take from this game, the Panthers can play with any team in the league.

You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

not 3rd downs (although that also contributed) but wining on defense, special teams, and offense. We won on offense but lost on defense and special teams. 1/3 us, 2/3 bears.

This game came down to a number of things

It’s easy to overlook because Cam has been playing at a high level… But STs sucked, defense sucked, Nannee sucked and redzone offense sucked. Moving the ball outside the redzone is about all this team can do really well.

It's not him, but it's something about him

He may not always get the best throws to him, but it seems like he’s targeted too much for his production. He’s snake bitten somehow. Just no good comes when he’s targeted.

He’s thrown to more because he’s left open. He’s left open because opposing db’s know he’s a dropper.

by Mr. Plow on Oct 2, 2011 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

What makes him suck even worse is that there's a lot of promise on the bench behind him

They just aren’t getting minutes. I’m confident that Edwards and Pilares at worst could do what Nannee does… catch wide-open passes, and drop everything else.

My favorite, was when the game was on the line...

we needed a first down and Cam threw to him. He saw the ball coming and mistaking it for a lethal heat seeking missile, he slid onto his back, just in time for the ball to sail over his head. However, as anyone who has played kick ball knows, the ball hit him in the knee while he was flat on his back, thus resulting in him being killed.

We all WANT the wins right now, but we still need to look at all the positives.

We know Double Trouble can run, we are still developing Cam. Remember, this year is 60% development.

We were gashed by Forte (he’s good and our tacklers were just a hair off each time). We kicked directly to Hester (Duh!) and another kick return, yet the game was STILL WINNABLE! I like where we are going. We’ll lose some of the winnable games this year, so that we will perform better for the whole season next year.

Time for either Pilares or Edwards to step in as #3 WR. Put LaFell as #2 WR. He has earned it.

My personal opinion...

I don’t care if it’s a kick or a punt, if Hester is the return man, when your STs suck as much as ours, you get that ball out of bounds. I don’t care if it puts Chicago on their 40. Starting on the 40 gives you better odds of making a stop than letting Hester return.

I think patience is our friend with this team. We all want to win now and I do too but later in the season and next year this team isn’t gonna lose games this way. We will make these plays and get these close wins.

It's a good point but frustrating nonetheless

This season does remind me of the Panthers just before the Super Bowl year when we didn’t win many games but were losing close games. When they turned it around and started winning those close games it made all the difference.

That said, it’s extremely frustrating that we are losing these close games on a couple bonehead plays every week. This team is literally 3 plays away from being 4-0 right now.

But with all of that, consider this: we allowed no sacks, won the TOP handily, moved the chains easily (24 FDs to only 15 for the Bears), never fumbled. A lot of good things to build on. A lot if things we never did last year.

As for the penalties, we’ve got to be one of the worst in the league by now. We had 2 beautiful TD passes nullified by calls, and a host of other FDs. If either one of those were allowed to stand, we win this game, despite all the list of the three factors I listed above. I’m not blaming the refs for those, rather the discipline of the players, who need to drastically reduce the penalties.

Our offensive production can succeed against any Defense out there. Through 4 games (including the monsoon game), we’ve amassed an amazing 1760 yds of offense, a 440 YPG average.) Shore up the defense’s tackling, and eliminate all the penalties, and we’re a contender, and in every game we play.

Those 2 things are what the coaches have got to work on this week, not play-calling, not route-running. Tackling and discipline: what they call the fundamentals.

I have a hard time blaming playcaling when you amass over 500 yards of offense. I blame refs for stupid ass penalties and poor defense and poor ST play.

Should we have run the ball more? Yeah. But I can’t argue with the offensive production.

I agree with this too...

In our three losses our team has had over 400 yards in each game. Not garbage time yards, but real productive, offensive yards and special teams and defense are giving the games away.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

its not all about yards

the playcalling in the red zone has led to so many stalled drives. we have to come away with TDs instead of FGs in the redzone, and we rarely are doing so

I agree with your points on the play calling, but not the refs

Yeah, there have been some questionable at best calls against us this year but thats part of the NFL and we’ve had some go in our direction too.

To me our special teams cost us this game as well as the Arizona game. Defense was horrible today. We said it all week that stopping Forte was the key to this game. We give him a career high day and lost by 5 points.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Very few calls have gone our way… even the players are starting to talk about how poor the officiating has been. I know that is a crutch to use for the reasons for our losses, but they have called some really awful penalties that have either taken us out of FG range or screwed us out of TD’s.

There has been some bad calls... don't get me wrong...

But in the NFL you account for the things you have control over and the decision to punt to Hester instead of punt out of bounds cost us far more in this game than the BS pass interference call on Shockey.

Once again we beat ourselves with a few big mistakes.

1. Naane should not be getting that many opportunities over Lafell. Why they keep going to him is beyond me and the first and only real complaint I have with our coaching staff. Lafell should be #2 end of story.

2. Cam is the real deal. period. You can only say, “well it was only a couple games” for so long. He is for real and he is here to stay. Opposing teams are going to loathe facing Cam Newton for the next decade.

3. Deangelo is the same guy he always has been, just needed time to fit in to the offense.

4. That PI call on Shockey was complete and utter bullshit. If the guy hadn’t lost his balance and fell over there probably wouldn’t have been a call. There were a couple of other calls I didn’t agree with but you can’t blame the loss on the refs. We had our opportunities.

5. Devin Hester is a beast.

Rules and Regulations of the Game: 89, Bottom Line

by John Chilton on Oct 2, 2011 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

My thoughts on the game:

1) Like many people said above, Naanee sucks. Yes, he is open a lot, but that doesn’t matter if you can’t catch. LaFell needs to start next week. He had that dumb mistake where he went out of bounds instead of going for the 1st down, but otherwise had a decent game.

2) I feel like once we get to the opponent’s 30 yd line, Chud abandons the run and calls almost exclusively passes. Not really liking that. With that said, DWill and JStew looked great today with the opportunities they did get.

3) Penalties at inopportune times hurt us. See illegal formation and pass interference on Shockey.

by itsjunit on Oct 2, 2011 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

As for Lafell

I do think that Lafell has out performed Naane…. however, I keep going back to the thoughts of a couple weeks ago where Lafell is making 1-3 plays per game so far this year against the 3rd DB. If you put him into the #2 spot is he going to make the plays Naane is missing?

Not saying Naane is better because as we all know he gets open and just doesn’t make the play… the question is, if Lafell runs that same route does he even get open?

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

I'm writing the MMO now... but one question for people

Why should the Panthers have run the ball more?

Cam Newton averaged 8.1 YPA… could we have said with certainty that Double Trouble could have averaged that many yards per attempt?

by James Dator on Oct 2, 2011 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Certain plays we could have run the ball on… but yeah, when Cam is playing that well it is hard to justify taking the ball away. But we need some parity on offense. Need to blend in some running plays so that the PA passes become even more dangerous.

Also by the end of the game CHI was getting more pressure on Cam.

A few more runs would’ve slowed down that pressure a little bit.. The late third and fourth quarters we threw too much which allowed CHI’s line to pin their ears back a little more, at least to me.

Cam wouldn’t be throwing to him if he’s not open. Armanti was getting open this preseason but couldn’t finish the play. Why not rotate #2 WR a little bit. Armanti, KP and LaFell can certainly match what Ughh Nananana’s doing and we’d be developing them. Its not as though Ughh Nananana has ever been considered our clear cut, indesputable #2, IMO.

To me when your offense is getting the job done with those kind of numbers and you defense is giving up 100+ yard running games (200 today) and allowing two punt returns for TD’s in 4 weeks the problem isn’t the offense.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Tis true

But I agree with James in that Chud shouldn’t be fielding so much of the blame for “not running the ball enough” when the offense is putting points on the board and racking up yardage and time of possession.

Our special teams scare the sh!t out of me right now every time the ball is in the air on either side of the play and every time we need a 3 and out or a stop the defense is giving up yardage in chunks, that is far more glaring of a problem than what plays we are calling on offense when we are constantly moving the ball and almost never going 3 and out on offense.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Right on - 29 should be enough to beat that team.

If Connor tackles Hester where he should have, they don’t get that score.

Any criticisms of offensive play-calling, drops, overthrows, run/pass ratios – they’re all beside the point.

It’s our Defense (tackling, or the lack thereof) and penalties that keep biting us in the butt.

Agree, bigD.

I posted this week that we should punt out of bounds all day. If I could figure that out, seems like the Panther staff should have been all over it.

Running the ball usually always gets positive yards

Cam on the other hand completed less than 60% of his passes… Probably less in the 2nd half. More importantly, Stewart and DeAngelo are vets… Cam is a friggin rookie that we are relying on to do it all.

James,

there is no doubt we are moving the ball well right now, but you can’t argue that when we get in the red zone, our play-calling is extremely predictable. We are working almost exclusively out of the shotgun, when we do run it, it is a QB draw by Cam, and we we don’t, Cam is struggling to hit receivers in the compressed field. We have thrived between the 20’s and then gotten bogged down time and time again.

It probably wouldn’t have been a bad thing… I’m just confused why Chud’s playcalling is the biggest critique.

The offense exceeded their season averages on yards, pts scored, 1st downs…. while the defense allowed 7.2 yards per carry all day long by a team averaging 3.2 yards before today

by James Dator on Oct 2, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

DeAngelo had 2 out of 10 rushes of over 20 yards

those are explosive plays. Our running backs have an explosive element that a lot of teams don’t have. I just think keeping defenses more honest would do wonders for this team. Play action out of the I could really open things up in the red zone when the field gets condensed. The offense has definitely been very good. But it could be BETTER. We left a lot of points out there. When you run the ball once in a 1 pt. game, in the 4th quarter, with DeAngelo and JStew on the team, I think that is a mistake. The Bears didn’t even have to respect the run in the 4th quarter b/c they knew we were going to the air.

And to reiterate on an argument I posted earlier on this board… who’s to day that Pilares, Edwards or Lafell even get open on the play Naane is targeted on. This is the only reason I think Naane is starting is that the coaches aren’t seeing the ability to even get open.

I’ll give you the Shockey play, because that was just an atrocious penalty, but the Smitty drop and Lafell slip are things that happen. And things like that have been happening to them often. It doesn’t matter how close they have been, the fact is that they aren’t succeeding with the current playcalling, so why no try something different?

I think the majority of fans here are smart enough to accept the win but question the method. Personally, I’m ecstatic about Newton’s play (which I predicted, just not this soon), but I’ve been disappointed with our play calling every week.

I don’t care so much about the specific plays as I do about the players touches. DeAngleo and Stewart should be more involved, whether it be a screen pass, toss, pass, or handoff. They both have more ability than Naanee and can be incorporated into the scheme as an extension of the run game, if not in the run game directly.

The lack of a run game is a huge reason why we stall so many drives out

Cam just isn’t good enough yet once the field gets short. When we get into field goal range and the field shrinks, there isn’t as much space for the receivers to get open – and Cam isn’t comfortable enough yet to hit the receivers consistently in tight spots. Running the ball makes the defense a little more honest, and maybe that opens up the secondary a little to give the receivers more space.

Not to mention, the run game was working today. Beyond just opening the pass game up, just running the ball a little more by itself may have kept some of those drives alive.

it is my opinion that the Panthers could adjust their passing game to have Olsen function as that big reciever. To be honest i think part of Newtons issue in the red zone as a passer is the make up of the weapons and how they are used…. Alot of the really good red zone teams have big wideouts to throw it too.. Dez Bryant… Calvin Johnson….Andre Johnson… Greg Jennings.. These type recievers can really give you a advantage in those areas with jump balls and back shoulder throws…..it is my opinion that they need to use Olsen in that role near the goal line in the passing game…. like what they did on that 2 point conversion vs the Jags…. Stafford would not be as good in those areas without Megatron that is for sure… a qb needs those guys who have that type of skills in that area of the field

S.Smith is good but i am not sure if he would be as good in tight on the goal line in the passing game……give Newton Olsen in that area lined up at wideout and all of those issues go away in my opinion…. better give him another big wideout he needs that really bad that is what is missing from the offence

Because becoming one dimensional when your offense is gaining good yardage through balanced playcalling is destined to fail...

We came out of the half with all cylinders firing at full force on offense, and despite it being a one possession game up until the end of the 4th quarter we chose to become one dimensional and completely abandon the run game; balance, balance, and more balance is the key to winning games, no matter how pretty it may look to be putting up such gawdy passing numbers, not too mention that once we became one-dimensional we started seeing more and more 3rd and longs (which we failed to convert). I’m placing some serious blame on Chudz for this one, because we were putting Chi-town’s D on the ropes in the third quarter, but we got predictable and let them get back on us….

Good solution for a sieve-like defense that's besieged by injuries?

Keep their offense off the field lol We put ourselves in great position to a) Dominate TOP and b) keep their defense tired and off balance, and we went one-dimensional and let them get their offense back in a groove. Besides, something tells me they start passing the ball much more if we actually punch it in during the third quarter, which is something that sticking with the run most likely would’ve accomplished….

I would say run a more balanced O

bc for me its a matter of toughness, in the red zone, and games like last week I feel those are times you need to be able to play smashmouth football. Plus it instills an extreme fear in opposing defenses when they can’t say all we have to do is stop one part of an offense.

I beleive that part of our team is starting to really gel. I don’t think Cam was sacked one time at all today. Plus Byron Bell played solid again when he was put in the game to spell Otah. Butler also played well in Gamble’s absence. The Bear;s really only threw to Capt’s way today. The win’s will come in bunches in time, But I am really concerned with special teams as a whole. I think we might look at replacing that coach if things don’t turn around. Plus we are getting gashed in the run. It might be time for BAMF to take over the defense. If Devin Hester played for any other team in the NFL would he be anything more than a returner? Matt Forte has almost as many career receiving yards as he does, as a running back.

Exactamundo.

He, and the whole offense, are doing their parts.

Is it too much to hold your opponent to 20 points a game?

Had we done that in our 3 losses, we’d be undefeated right now.

I know we’re damaged by injuries to the D, but, FGS, when we know they’ve only got ONE weapon on offense, and they’re afraid to pass, is it too much to expect the 11 guys on defense to tackle that one threat before he gets 200 yds? Or maybe expect the 11 on ST to be on the lookout for the one guy on kick returns that may hurt us? Or maybe alert the boys who’re on the offense to wait til the ball’s snapped before moving, or line up properly, or go in motion in compliance with the rules, or NOT block somebody in the back on a KR or PR for a change? Is it too much to ask these things?

No wonder Cam’s exasperated, or Shockey’s pissed. They’re not losers, and they’re not used to losing, and to quote Peter Finch once again (“Network”, great Oscar winning role, way before any of your times), “I’m mad as Hell, and I’m not going to take it any more!” (somebody post that picture, and see what I’m talking about.)

We all knew this season was a loss

And that Cam’s development was what was most important. So far we are right on point, because Cam is looking like a future star. It’s just painful to experience the losses… Even when you expected them.

Now you know why I try to be realistic (oft negative) in my predictions.

Just better (and more productive) to pull out the positives instead of saying “29 pts isn’t enough”… defensive was shocking today, but that’s to be expected with the injured LBs and no veteran DTs

This is the first game I got wrong this season so I think I am fairly realistic. I had this a Panther win.

I predicted Panthers 31 – Bears 24. I also inserted the caviat that we needed to be aware of the Bears Special Teams. I even suggested punting OB in this game. Had this been done I think the Panthers would have made me look good today.

I do, however, agree that this is a learning/developmental season and personally I am not living or dying by the win/loss record.

questions that some of you can help me with after missing the game and looking over the statistics:

1. How can you lose to any team when the turnover ratio is even and you end up with a +246 total yard advantage?

2. Did Baker not receive the memo on Hester’s abilities?

3. Cam had 19 incompletions: How many of those would you say were inaccurately thrown and how many were dropped? Regarding the latter, who were the offenders?

3. About 6 of them were bad passes. Naanee dropped the other 13 passes.

4. Hardy for a bit, then he came back and played well. Other than that, no one that I know of.

5. I think so. Caused a bear to have a neutral zone infraction early on if I am not mistaken.

1. How can you lose to any team when the turnover ratio is even and you end up with a +246 total yard advantage?

You lose special teams, by a wide margin

2. Did Baker not receive the memo on Hester’s abilities?

He got it about the time Hester ran by him, it was sent when he actually had to tackle Hester just minutes before

3. Cam had 19 incompletions: How many of those would you say were inaccurately thrown and how many were dropped? Regarding the latter, who were the offenders?

About 11 bad throws, 1 actual throw away to avoid sack, about 7 drops

4. Did any Panthers get injured?

None for more than a play or two, Hallelujah

5. Did Otah play?

Yep, well too

Bigger question

Since they didn’t fine Vick for his outburst, can they fine Shockey. Goodell set a bad precedent by not reigning in the questions about refs last week. Now it is open season on them, and you can’t hit a guy who makes a hundredth the amount that Vick does for pulling the same thing this week.

But this locker room issue scares me a bit to be honest. The last thing we need right now is to fall apart mentally.

Hopefully BAMF can put this fire in a bottle and use it to inspire the team to beat the Saints next week.

IMO

No matter what the defense and special teams did or didn’t do, our offense lost this game. If we put 7 on the board instead of 3 (or 0) out of the 5 field goal attempts, then this game would have damn near been a blow out.

With that being said, our offense still looks pretty damned good. Our defense as a whole isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. I know our run defense has its issues but our pass defense is more than holding its own.

Our offensive line is getting better and better each and every week. This is the second week in a row that Cam hasn’t been sacked. Granted alot of times that is due to his elusiveness and just being hard to bring down, but the o-line is giving him time in the pocket. Not only that, they are finally starting to open holes for both of our studs in the backfield.

I dont think our special team unit played that badly except for the punt directly to Hester. I realize that there were some missed tackles, but that also comes from Hester just being the best in the NFL and kickoff/punt returns. He holds the record for a reason.

I truly believe that we are on the verge of winning alot of these close games.

Completely disagree with the first and last paragraph of this post...

Defense and special teams both lost this game to me.

And special teams has given up two punt returns for TD’s this year and gave up a 73 yard kick return today. Additionally Armanti has had 0 blocking all year.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

And two missed field goals...

The one was a block by Peppers that he should have not kicked so low and the other was a miss from 52 (remember last week when everybody was upset we didn’t attempt a 50+ yard field goal in the rain and the “he makes those with ease” statement?).

Either way, a 73 yard kick return, punt return for a TD, 1 missed field goal and 1 blocked field goal is the definition of special teams playing badly in my eyes.

by MindMachine on Oct 2, 2011 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think our special team unit played that badly except for the punt directly to Hester. I realize that there were some missed tackles, but that also comes from Hester just being the best in the NFL and kickoff/punt returns. He holds the record for a reason.

What about the horrendous KO coverage? What about the even worse KO return and punt return blocking? What about allowing a blocked FG?

Those are all special teams. Horrible!

by FF Companion on Oct 2, 2011 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

it's real simple

don’t kick to Hester. That was two TDs right there. His KO return went for 73 yards, and then, as if we didn’t get enough, we punt straight to him.

by usana_gaines on Oct 2, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

The refs

They looked absolutely paid off today. The Shockey call as we all know was garbage but did anyone else notice the timing of the flag being thrown? Shockey burnt coverage and the ref didn’t even throw the flag until Shockey had almost caught the ball in the endzone.

So Cam Newton is pretty damn good

I think coaching really needs to step up here. On that 50+ field goal that missed 1 yard short., why do we not run on 3rd and 15 and set up a shorter field goal? Also time management was poor. And like many of you have said, the abandoning of the run game really hurt today because today we were running well.

Got to give it up to our defense, for a squad that is young and without our star LBs plus rookie DTs they played really hard. Proud of them

nanee and special teams to blame

I think if LaFell was in and not Nanee, we get a completion and not a pick 6. CAM is a rookie, but he might have to cuss out some of these vets. Nanee should’ve caught that. I know the pass was high, but i still think LaFell makes the catch.

And I thought we all agreed not to kick to Hester. Does Rivera not read CSR? Did he not get the memo?

SO we have lost close games to the defending SB champs, and the 2010 NFC North Champs. We’re doing well, but I think this game also showed that we have a rookie head coach, as well as a rookie QB. But CAM looks unbelievable.

It says Hester is stiff arming Mare on the way to a 69 yard punt return. If Mare is in that would be on the kick return where Mare actually pushed him out of bounds.

Not that it really matters.

Kasay would have been on the bench for that play........

Lloyd would have had to put down his flask and put out his cigarette to make the tackle, so he wouldn’t have been much help either. Probably would have muttered “fookin cunt” or something under his breath as Hester frog flipped into the end zone.

A quick breakdown of the passing game.

I was wondering if Naanee is really as bad as we are saying. So I decided to go back and look at the stats of our receivers. Through the first 4 games, here’s the breakdown of who’s doing what in the receiving game. Keep in mind that I didn’t look at the RBs, just WR and TEs.

Targets Catches Yards Catch % YPC YPT
Smitty 42 24 530 0.57 22.1 12.6
Naanee 25 8 75 0.32 9.4 3.0
Lafell 16 12 161 0.75 13.4 10.1
Shockey 20 11 178 0.55 16.2 8.9
Olsen 27 17 219 0.63 12.9 8.1

A few observations:

1. No WR behind Lafell on the depth chart has even gotten a target.

2. Despite Naanee being targeted the third most times (behind Smitty and Olsen) he has the worst % of balls caught, YPC and YPT. He’s only catching a third of the balls thrown to him – no one else is under 50%. I’ m not sure how many are drops and how many are bad throws, but it’s clear that something isn’t clicking with Naanee.

3. Cam is doing a great job of spreading the ball. Smitty has gotten way more targets than anyone else, but that’s to be expected. His numbers also justify it. Everyone else is between 16 and 27 targets which seems pretty even to me.

4. Lafell needs to be on the field more. He has he second most yards per target behind Smitty, but the least targets. I suspect this is due to him being on the sidelines during two WR sets.

Just a note that since you say catch % it shouldn’t have the 0.XX. Percentage would be the whole number.

And yeah, technically I should have multiplied that number by 100 but I just didn’t think about it when doing it. I’m an engineer, so knowing that .XX = XX% is second nature to me and it never occurred to me to bother converting it.

I should have noted, I got those numbersfrom the box scores on ESPN

It’s possible that it was overthrown enough they attributed the target to someone else, or that the play was called back for a penalty. It’s also possible ESPNs box score is just wrong. Either way I kind of remember him being thrown to, but I can’t remember what the outcome was.

That's fine,

It’s just that these rumors have been around for the past 2 years. There was never a lack of ideas or desire to do the movie. I’m pretty sure the problem from the beginning was getting a studio to pick up the project (and to a lesser degree getting Michael Cera to agree to do it).

The idea to do a fourth season is new, but there still is no studio agreeing to pick up the project, and no official date. Until I see that info, I refuse to get my hopes up.

Few New Observations

As some of you know, I never really post, but today I think I have to…

1. The tweet about “This year is about getting Cam ready” keeps me thinking (from Steve Reed maybe?) I think its true. This year is about building and learning. For instance — wildcat; simple to install but why no until now? Same thing with play calling. I wonder if we are sometimes ignoring he run in order to give Cam reps so that NEXT year, he is not so new at passing in the red zone… don’t know, but it keeps me awake at night :)

2. Bear we handled by the offense. Sure we did not win and missed lots of opportunities, but take away 14 points from the Bears because of special teams and this game isn’t even close. Along the same line, big props to the offensive line. Gross gotta get some love for handling Pep all day. Sure he got some pressure and a blocked FG (I could have blocked that one) but he was basically just an average player all day long. Piggy and Otah are having fun on the right. If we had a true FB I think it could be even better… look to FA or the draft next year to be a FB/TE combo if we lose Shockey.

3. DT an issue. WE won’t sign one THIS year. IF this is the year to get Cam ready, then its also the year to get 2 3rd rounders ready too. Next year look to DT in draft and maybe BIG FA pick up. Forte gashed us becasue we can’t control the point. BUT, give them a year and have them as 2-3 or even 3-4 DTs on roster along with Bgi $ and the Kracken… WOW.

4. I agree. Someone shoot L.A.

5. If this year is about learning… there is no reason why the goal should not to have deep run into playoffs next year. We need DT. #2 receiver, resign Shockey. Notice I have not said anything about the secondary… good game by them as well.

Well, back to lurking :)

Why Neblett?

He was inactive for this game, for some reason. When he’s in, he plays as well or better than Fua or McClain or Fields.

Nevertheless, if we had a true run stopper to clog the middle, and not give ground, or be blocked to the side so easily, guys like Forte wouldn’t find it so easy to get to the second level. And speaking of that, Dan Connor is not such a great rush defender, IMO – gets out of position too often and gets lost in the shuffle.

Panthers

When will the coaches bench/cut Nanee and let Armanti Edwards learn on the field? His explosive skills are being wasted on just being a punt returner, especially considering that our punt return blocking is atrocious! Nanee dropped at least 3 passes today and tipped a pass that he could have caught which costs the Panthers a Pick 6 and probably the game! If that had been Armanti he would have been benched immediately. Armanti deserves a chance to play and help this team!

well i was off again today on my prediction. I think im changing my stance on 8 or 9 wins this season. What scares me is ALL the games we lost, we could have easily won. To be honest that scares me more than blowout loses.

With blowout losses its easier to pinpoint problems or find the dead weight players and make adjustmets and thats fine. But with losses like these, where we play up to our full potential, and play our hearts out, that hurts a lot more because it says A. possibly more deeper mental or coaching issues going on or B. we just arent good enough no matter giving it our all.

screw “moral victories” i rather us just get blown out instead of these close games where we lose constantly

by Panthster on Oct 2, 2011 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

No. No. NO.

I couldn’t disagree more. I really don’t understand your logic here.

With a blowout loss, there’s usually nothing you can point at and say, “…there. That is the reason we lost.” In those kind of games, the team performance is just a laundry list of major suck ass, and a lot of coaches opt to not even hold a film session the day after, because there’s absolutely nothing of use to go over.

With a close loss you can say, “Forte killed us on the ground. Hester killed us in the return game. However, Cam was great, Smith was great, Naanee (still) needs to be benched, Williams showed promise for the first time this season, etc.” There are specific points to be made, good things to build on and bad things to work on.

Also, no way did we play today to our full potential. If our special teams unit played to their “full potential,” we win this one by two scores. If Mare played up to his “full potential,” we win this game by a point. If the refs called this game up to their “full potential,” the Shockey TD stands. And so on.

I love that you’re so opinionated here on CSR, but we’re miles apart on this one.

A lot to be impressed by so far, despite the losses.

We’re competitive every game, and it’s always just a play or 2 that gets us beaten, not the total losertom that we exemplified last year.

And now the players are expressing extreme dissatisfaction with the outcomes, not taking it in stride like Fox had them doing.

I predict we catch the Saints by surprise next week, then win the next 2 home games (Skins and Minny), go to the bye 4-4, and by then all these mistakes will be corrected (costly penalties, especially) and we still have a chance at 8-8.

Can’t wait to read James’ Optimist post tomorrow, as there’s a LOT to be optimistic about.

My opinion of the game is this.

The offense did it’s job. If you can’t win with 29 points your defense has a problem. We all saw the problem, they let Forte run for 205 yards, even when we all knew they were going to run. The second thing is special teams. They need to learn how to tackle. There have been players around several of these long returns and missed the tackle. Then when we are returning, they can’t get a decent return without a penalty. Poor Edwards doesn’t even have elbow room when the ball reaches him. They need to get rid of Legadu Shanaynay and let Edwards step in and learn from experience, but other than that they are clicking on offense.

Has anyone given praise to the offensive line yet?

Not sure if it was mentioned above, but i want to make sure the offensive line gets some love. The Bears knew Cam was throwing on almost every down and that pocket held. Time and time again I was amazed by how well they did on passing downs, and if it did break down Cam was a Houdini and somehow got away. Run blocking was much better also. What a fun offense to watch. Every time they get the ball I know they will move it down the field. Now we just have to perform better in the Red Zone and stop killing our self’s with costly penalties. Go Panthers!!!

Just curious about Lafell?

Everytime he seems to be on the field he will make a catch then get taken right back out of the game. Then all of a sudden Nanee seems to be targeted way to much on play calls after that. Almost it seems like that the staff is trying to show fans Nanee was a good pickup. Well it is not working. Go with the players that have been more productive on the field and that would be Lafell by a mile over Nanee. For God’s sake Nanee couldn’t even catch the 2 point conversion at the end of the game.

It’s not that I “felt the word” any less than anyone else, but the hand gesture doesn’t add anything to the ritual for me.

During any event I’ve attended when the National Anthem is played or sung, I usually just stand with my hands joined behind my back…and I promise you I’m not doing it to spite anyone or show lack of pride for my country. Just my personal preference. It’s not a sign of disrespect. Who’s to say that those who are holding their hands over their hearts aren’t silently cursing America’s name or belittling the entire Anthem concept in their mind during the song?

Hmmmm...I pretty sure I didn't say "it's not annoying".....

But that doesn’t really matter. I admit that commenting “mmm bop” doesn’t add anything substantive to the conversation, but I think you are drastically overreacting when you say that it’s pissing people off. As far as I know you’re the only one that has gotten deeply upset over a nonsensical word written occasionally as the first comment on an internet blog. In fact, there has been several comments about how people thought it was funny. If you ask me, that’s adding “positive value to the overall experience of the blog”. Don’t you know that laughing burns calories? CSR is increasing your football knowledge while decreasing your waistline. People should be thanking me.

More people get upset over the “first comment on an internet blog” thing than you probably realize.

But it doesn’t really matter. I don’t think it has a place here, and I will maintain that belief. There’s really no need to argue it further.

I'm probably going to get blasted for this but,

Cam needs to play better. Beside the obvious gaping hole that is our D line, Cam needed to make more plays than he made today. These two things directly lost the game for us. We can blame the penalties and bs calls, but reality these are things everyone deals with. We need to find a way to win when given the opportunity.

We had more than enough opportunities today. And if we would have been scoring, Martz would have been throwing. You know it was killing him running the ball, even though we couldn’t stop it.
We could have gotten to Cutler and forced more turnovers. Their OL is babbage.

Leaving points on the field is far too common a sight in only 4 games. I know Cam is a rookie, but I’m setting the bar high for him, and I want more. I believe he will get there soon. Once he does it’s over. #2012Panthers!!

Normally I'd agree with you based on the points we left on the field...

But I can’t pin this on Cam. We had several TD’s taken away by stupid penalties, and we gave up two TD’s due to poor ST play.

Too many dropped balls to blame Cam.

He played out of his mind today. Bad officiating, awful special teams play, poor play calling, and a porous run defense were all to blame for today’s loss. In my opinion, the special teams play cost us the most. Not only did they give up two huge TD’s, they surrendered field position on nearly every play. Seemed like the Bears started at, or around, the 40 yard line every time.

Yeah, you're right - maybe Clausen needs to take over, huh?

Newton throws for 1 TD, rushes for 2 more, and has 2 EZ TDs called back by penalties (which he didn’t commit) – what a slacker.

As I said elsewhere, if we only hold our opponents to 20 points in the 3 losses, we’re undefeated. Is that too much to ask? Maybe you might concentrate your frustration where it’s most needed.

by bigdavis on Oct 3, 2011 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

Jay Cutler won while going 9-17, barely 100 yds, and 0 TDs.
Cam tripled that production and lost! If EVERYONE ELSE plays as well as Cam, we are sitting starters in the 4th quarter of this game.

Thanks for the link!

There are some great quotes in there. For those who don’t click, I have to copy and paste the Shockey section (and this is from Steve Reed at Carolina Growl):

"We pay their salary and I can’t get an explanation," Shockey said. "So I would like to see the explanation when (the officials) do get graded. I don’t understand. I have no idea. There were a couple of things out there where I asked them the question and they don’t tell me (anything). They should be held accountable as well. They get paid a lot of money. They get to hang out and do whatever they do before the game and fly for free and do all kinds of (stuff) for free. So it’s very disappointing and disheartening. I don’t know what else to say.
"I haven’t seen the film yet, but I know for a fact the flag was thrown after I was in the end zone and I was by myself. I hope the league reviews it because I’m baffled. I don’t know what the (expletive) they were thinking. He had no words for it. He said to move on to the next play and soon the (expletive) game is over."
Shockey also revealed that he has been playing with a broken finger since the first week of the season and plans to see a specialist soon. There’s no indication at this point that he’ll miss any time.

Interesting to not that he’s been playing with a broken finger. I had no idea. But, more importantly, I love that Shockey has that much fire in him.
