Are Panthers Shifting To 3-4 Defense?
According to "Inside The panthers' at the CO, and RotoWorld.com, the Panthers DC Sean McDermott says:
"May transition to more of a 3-4 defense".
They both mention that DE Charles Johnson and DE/OLB Antwan Applewhite playing as stand up 3-4 OLB's, Dan Connor and James Anderson at ILB, with Ronald Fields and Frank Kearse at NT.
Actually, ProfootballFocus.com reports that DE Charles johnson lined up at 3-4 OLB 3 times yesterday. I'm a little syrprised that Johnson would move to OLB rather than DE Greg Hardy, and shocked that Kearse is mentioned at NT, and not Fua.
This move will make for a very interesting draft day decision at LB, will the panthers go for a fast 4-3 OLB in the Thomas Davis mold, like UNC Zach Brown, or a bigger 3-4 type pass rushing OLB, like South Carolina's Devin Taylor, West Virginia's Bruce Irvin, or Marshall's Vinny Curry?

I think we'll see more 3-4 looks
But there’s too much committed to some strictly 4-3 players to make the move a permanent one.

None of the reporters think its permanent move
Just that we’ll use our 3-4 packaged some more because its a different look and our defense really blows right now.

Well that makes more sense
Switch it up and confuse the offense

Yeah, I just saw this on PFT
I’m not sure I like this. Most of our front seven is oriented towards the 4-3. Who knows, maybe it’ll work

No big deal
Many teams that play the 3-4 line up in a 4-3 from time to time. Ravens, Cowboys, etc…
According to the BAMF himself
@carolinagrowl Steve Reed
In talking long term, Ron Rivera said he’d still like to be base 4-3 defense but with a lot of 3-4 tendencies.
