We could use veteran leadership in the secondary, and Harris provides that in spades.

Bring him back,,,

..As a back-up. I don’t think he should start in place of Godfrey or Martin anymore, but Rivera and McDermott may have a package to use them all in…

by JAKE_OB on Oct 17, 2011 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

If he can tackle better than Godfrey, then he needs to start in front of Godfrey.

The secondary needs leadership, which Godfrey hasn’t been able to provide — Hitman has done so in spades in his time here. I’m game to grab him with a conditional 7th, sure. Sign me up!

You stole the jersey. Also, as long as the # is available we may as well bring Harris home.

He’s big enough and hits plenty hard. Also Like BW said you cant discount the amount of leadership he would provide to this young team.

Please, oh please, please?!

Any day of the week, I’ll give a 5th or later. We need the Hitman in our backfield. I’m really not a fan of Godfrey at the SS position, I’ve never felt like he had that knock-out mentality that I like to see from the position. He’d be a small upgrade to our run defense (one man can’t fix everything, after all) and about equal in pass defense.

Charles Godfrey is better in pass defense than Chris Harris ever was, and has become a very solid under rated safety. That being said, Chris was better against the run and could lay a hit like no safety I’ve ever seen. BUT the reason he was let go is because he didn’t have the kind of speed to cover like the old coaching staff wanted.

Make no mistake, I love the Hitman… But he is NOT an upgrade over Godfrey.

by JAKE_OB on Oct 17, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

No, he isn't.

His role would be primarily in some different sub packages.

To each his own...

But I’m unimpressed with Godfrey. Solid, yes, but not a force in the back field. Also, that pass interference yesterday was horrible.

Anyways, the old staff is out, I hope the new staff can see what a mistake it was to let Hitman go in the first place.

Well we’ve seen how Pugh has performed this season, bringing Chris back would help out for sure and then Pugh could be used on Special Teams.

Not sure if this will make any difference, but remember Rivera has familiarity with Harris. He was the D coordinator with him in Chicago for a little while.

That's what I'm hoping..

And I think Rivera is the type of coach that can make use of someone like Harris. Everyone knows he’s not the best coverage guy in the world but it’s hard to ignore his other qualities, they just need to be put to the right use.

Harris is a liability in pass protection

In a blitz happy defense, Harris would be badly exposed. No thanks.

I love the hitman, and he knows how to bust heads in the running game. However, this is not the right place for him anymore.

Does anyone remember last year, when the devensive coordinater was Ron Meeks, and the defense spent pretty much the entire game on the field? Yet they managed to be much more consistent and at least kept the score reasonable(mainly first half) with pretty much the same personnel.

by Blazin on Oct 17, 2011 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

It would be more fair to compare this year's defense to Meeks' first year defense...

Cause, you know, they’re learning a new scheme this year as opposed to having the scheme down pat last year.

Jon Beason was healthy last season, right?

He’s an All-pro caliber MLB, no?

by ERL on Oct 17, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He is still a better OLB than Jayson Williams.

And he moved back to MLB when Connor was hurt mid-way through the season. Point is he was healthy and started all 16 games last year, which needs to be accounted for (along with learning a new scheme) if we’re going to compare the 2010 and 2011 defenses.

I wonder if Hitman could play WLB....

I’d like to see if he could make the switch. I think he has the build and strenth for it. He would actually have decent speed for a WLB (not so much as a SS anymore), and he can tackle better than any LB we are currently fielding. He may be a little smallish, but I think he’s comparable to Thomas Davis. I think he would be much better in that capacity, and he could also help in run support more often.

Count me in on bringing Hitman back. I’ve missed him since the day we traded him away (dumbest move, evah).

That is essentially what he is anyway, TS.

He’s accustom to playing in the box as a LB would. If they cut him we should see if he’s interested. Don’t know about trading for him.

by ERL on Oct 17, 2011 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

My thinking is this...

If we could play him at WLB, he could basically replace what TD gave us, a good tackler with enough speed to cover the weak side of the field. I think having him play WLB with Connor in the Middle and Anderson at the SLB, the entire LB corps just got a lot better. I think our biggest hit was TD. We just have not been able to replace his talent at that position. Both Williamses have shown that they are terrific backups, but they are not starting level at all. That position requires tackling and speed. I think Hitman could do it and do it well. I hope Rivera brings him in. Looks like the Bears are just ready to let him go for a conditional pick, I’d give up a 6th rounder for him, wouldn’t you?

I guess. I'd want to check him out physically first (no homo).

Agree in the sense that he would be a great fit at WLB. My thinking is he could play there in nickel, and be the box safety in a cover-1 package (suited to stop the run), essentially lining up as a 4th LB.

Thats the only difference. DT’s were supposed to be upgrades? They chose not to keep Marshall. Got to be able to overcome one loss. Of course we have lost more than that but compared to last year thats it. To this point Ron Meeks did better with what he had than what McDermott has done. Take the first game for example, with all of Beason, davis, and andersons talent in what way would you rather use them? Committing them to a lane by blitzing constantly therefore isolating thier talent or letting them read and react playing downhill and using them in coverage. Its like saying our o-line sucked last year giving up so many sacks yet we know they are solid at the least.

As far as Harris u wont find a better tackler. Should have value but no where near the player Godfrey is against the pass. Of ccourse he cant tackle a running back for ____. So tired of seeing that highlight on tv where he ducks into the fetal position right before getting run over.

We need some veteran presence back there, and someone to teach our safeties how to tackle! Good thing about our situation is we wouldn’t have to rely on him in coverage 100% of the time, but we can rotate our safeties a lot more efficiently with Harris…

New scheme excuse is over. 6 weeks in, they know the scheme. Would it be this bad had we stayed healthy, absolutely not. Our starting LBs are tremendous in coverage, lost Edwards of course. All that factors in, but, if after 6 weeks of relentless blitzing the only sacks obtained are by the DEs and a corner, maybe from a playcall standpoint its time to reevaluate. Not saying he should be fired.

Give the players/coaches till the end of the year

I have to admit I would be lying if I said I haven’t though the same thing. But they are right that the season is still early. Given that I have read the McDermott has a propensity to give up big plays in phili, its easy to jump to the conclusion that he is having the same probs here. But with Rivera’s background maybe he will step in and help the MoDerm.

It’s hard to go from a defense based team to an offense based team as a fan. We all wanted a better offense, we just forgot to say “and keep our good defense.” Oops.

What I don’t understand is why isn’t the offensive side of our ST better. I think we need to play more starters on ST.

Hey now...it was a big misunderstanding. Harbaugh is just a bit exuberant at times.

He even invited Schwartz to lunch earlier today to try and squash all this nonsense.

Maybe we can convince the Bears to trade Hitman the way the Jets traded Derrick Mason

(And I still can’t believe they did this…)

Jets gave the Texans Derrick Mason in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick. If Mason records 33 or more receptions the rest of the season, the Jets get a 7th round pick. If he gets 32 or fewer the rest of the season, the Jets get nothing. That’s how bad they wanted Mason gone. They’re essentially saying “here, you can have him”.

We have a way of mind fucking the Bears

“If Harris gets 100 tackles we’ll give you your 7th round pick if he doesn’t you give us back our 3rd for Greg Olsen”

they got us with Pepper though

did you guys know that we would have gotten a conditional 2nd round pick if Pep had 10 sacks last year. Unfortunately he didn’t get it done

by pcroadrage on Oct 17, 2011 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Peppers got us with Peppers

He just would not play because he hated/wanted more money from the Panthers

How?

idk

Just to be honest I guess its the way he left Carolina and the way he taunts when ever he plays here just pisses me off (so I guess that’s why I said that lol)

by rscott94 on Oct 17, 2011 5:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree about Peppers. He hurt the team long before he left…but the question was for pcroadrage. Don’t know who or what gave him that info but there is no way that I know of that this is true. We let Peppers go with no compensation (unless you count the supplimental draft pick…a 3rd rounder).

I think that was a different situation though

It’s Harris asking for the trade not the team being desperate to unload him. Though that would be absolutely AWESOME!

Hey we allready missed out on Aaron Curry!

Seahawks paid most his contract for this year! so the raiders are paying him like 400,000 to 600,000 this year.. that be the case we missed out big time!

This has been a public service announcement.......

I'de feel comfortable giving a 6th

but that about it. I love the guy but it’s not a prime need. Godfry and Martin are both decent safeties and are better cover men than he is, although he sure would help against the run. I would love to get him and have designed packages for him to get on the field (and not just a few plays per game). I could see him as a nickle LB, highly rotational SS, 3rd safety, or even a WLB (thats what i do in Madden)

What happened with Pugh sunday?

We might need Harris for depth

Yes Please

I’m a fan of both Godfrey and Martin, but just adding Hitman to the roster should give some added leadership. I also like the idea some posted above about using him in sub packages.

by Ancev on Oct 17, 2011 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

I would love it if we brought the Hitman back for a 7th round pick.

IMO, losing Beast then TD has our defense running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Harris would be help to a degree on the field, but he’s even more valuable serving as a leader and organizing the defense when he’s out there, especially with so many young’ns out there on D. At this stage in his career, Harris shouldn’t be out there at SS too often, but he’s a versatile player and a great tackler and heaven knows we could use a whole hell of a lot more of that on this team. DO IT!

Hitman for a conditional 7th rounder?

Hell yes. His physical skills have diminished and he did get benched for subpar performance, but he brings a few things that this defense needs. First and foremost, he is a sure tackler. The other things he would bring to this young defense are leadership and attitude. Fans have complained all year that Godfrey is not living up to that C on his chest and the secondary needs that Beason-esque vocal leader. Hitman brings that. He also brings a BA attitude that would fit in perfectly with the persona that BAMF wants. He will lay the lumber and not think twice about it, which is one of the things I loved about him. There’s something to be said about a secondary that has that hard-hitting safety that receivers have to look over their shoulders for. I’m behind this 100%.

Brandon Lloyd traded for a 6th rounder to the Rams!!!

They dropped Sims Walker…. Please pick him up!

The guy who wants atrade cuz he played himself out of the starting line up?

Dont get me wrong, I always liked C Harris, but its painfully obvious that he’s lost a step, and this sudden teade requeaf doesnt show the leadership I always liked out of him. Cant believe so many here would even want him back now. No thanks.

We're talking about the same team that had no use for Olsen..

Should we get rid of him as well because Chicago can’t evaluate talent?

I blame that mostly on Mike Martz, though.
