Sunday Evening Gripes: Here's Mine, What's Yours?
For the most part I'm a positive poster on CSR. I'm optimistic that the Panthers will get 6 wins this year, make the playoffs next year, and compete for a Super Bowl spot in 2013. But tonight, we are 1-5, and I feel like griping. Gripe, gripe, gripe. Here are my 5 gripes for the Panthers after losing our 5th of 6 games so far this year:
1. One of the contributors to our losses is our poor return teams. The field position that our punt and kickoff returns are giving us, make it harder to score touchdowns, because we rarely start further downfield than our own 25 yard line. If it's blocking, then fire the coach. If it's Armanti, then put Captain back at PR. Something has to change in our return game. This part of special teams (as well as a few big plays of coverage teams) is killing us!
2. Speaking of which, Mike Goodson has too much talent to be in a T-shirt on Sundays. He has shown the potential to break long returns in previous seasons. He has proven his ability as a good pass catcher out of the backfield. He is one of the fastest players on the team with corresponding big play ability. Pilares has not shown any flashes at KR, so get Goody back on kickoff returns, and get him some reps on 3rd downs as well. Get Mike Goodson a uniform on Sundays.
3. We are playing better in the first half than the second half. We are getting outplayed consistently in the 4th quarter. Part of the blame has to go to the coaching staff for not making better halftime adjustments, or anticipating our opponents' adjustments. Our coordinators need to do a better job equipping our players to win games in the second half. And, I wish Coach RR would be less concerned about keeping a cool, head coaching demeanor, and give us some Cowherish fire on the sidelines; emotion plays a part of football and it wouldn't hurt us for our head coach to show some more emotion on game day.
4. I know it's usually not a good idea to question a player's injury status. But I'm going to do it anyway. Jeff Otah practiced on Friday. I am questioning his toughness. Play on Sunday, rest during the week, take a week off on bye week. But play on game day. We needed him today, and he sat it out. Unless there is risk of furthering an injury by playing, Jeff needs to get on the field and play through the pain even if he's not 100%. He is that important to our team.
5. This one sounds silly, but I'll say it anyhow. The NFL shouldn't punish the previous year's worst 2-14 team with a schedule that begins like ours: In our first 6 games, we faced: 1) The Super Bowl Champs, 2) Last year's NFC #1 seed Falcons who went 13-3, 3) Last year's NFC championship runner-up Bears, and 4) Last year's 10 win Wild Card New Orleans Saints. Balance out the schedule better than making sure a young, growing team has to play the previous year's 4 top teams of the conference in the first month and a half of the season. If we play a more balanced schedule, we're probably 3-3 and growing in confidence for making a playoff run. No team should have to open with that schedule, let alone the team that is "supposed to" have the easiest schedule.
Those are my gripes for week 6. What about you? What are your gripes Panthers fans??

We have one of the hardest schedules and Greenbay has the easiest out of the NFL its ridiculous. You have the “worst” team with the hardest schedule and the “best” team with the easiest schedule… smh

i get that the reason we have the hardest schedule is because we play the
3 NFC south teams twice, all of which happened to win 10-13 games last year. Playing teams like AZ, MN, WAS, and TEN are fair, since they were poor teams last year. But it’s the order of schedule that is my gripe: Why put so many of our toughest games at the beg’g of our schedule?
SIMPLE AND PLAIN
The schedules are set years in advance.
The strength of said schedule is totally random. You can look up future schedules to see who we will play at any time. It’s a rotation of opponents.
In 2012, we will be playing the NFC East and the AFC West. In addition, we will play the same place divisional finisher in the NFC West and the NFC North. Then we have our division.
In 2013, we will be playing the NFC West, and the AFC East. In addition, we will play the same place divisional finisher in the NFC East and the NFC North. Then we have our division.
The schedules are totally random and there is no way to predict what they mean, in terms of strength of schedule, until that season gets here. We have been unfortunate enough to have some pretty tough strengths of schedule over the years, but it is no conspiracy.

hey alac
my gripe wasnt on who we play; i understand there is a formula in place. but the order of schedule is not set and has a human element to it. you do not see 6 road games in a row, or 4 division games in a row. why? because someone is supervising the order of the games. so i’m saying, if there is a human element, why not try to keep a team from having to play a bunch of great teams all at the beg’g of a season

Now, I don't know 'bout you...Are you crying?"
It's still a formula that's used.
not a bunch of people sitting around deciding when whom is played.

I'm Old fashioned Enough That I Believe That Teams In The Same Division Should Play The Same Schedule
That’s the only reason I would like to see a 18 game schedule, so that all the teams in a division could play the exact same teams, from 3 other divisions.
well,
I said dat earlier, put goodson back in uniform he is explosive, has always been. I said we shld use him on 3rd down more!! It ain’t rocket science, dats my first gripe! 2nd gripe, not sold on d coaching staff, don’t care for mcdoormat n dnt care gor clock management. Gripe 3, why did we get away from d run, just like us birds cldnt stop d run!! We should have kept ponding, need 2 b more balanced on offense! They putting too much on cam expecting him to do it all! He’s going to get burnt out! He looks out of breath at times, run more damn it!! We got 2 or 3 of the top backs give them d ball! Wth man!! Next thing, sign TO, we need another threat in a hurry! Still dnt care for legofdudu or whoever he is. To just cry all d time, think he wld b alrite!! Whoo defense, they suck! We could be 6-0 if it wasn’t for they arse!! They can’t stop a kitty cat, my 5 yr old cld run right thru them, they get paid all that money and can’t catch a cold!! Man defense and special teams fire all their arses!! Please, dis is crazy! Tired of almost winning, its d NFL leave ur ass on the field or stay out the field! Give full control back to r.meeks man!! Penalities, defense, and bad choices+ special teams is killing us!! Wth man! I want 2 win now, d hell w next time or next year! Gbay lost 6 starters n still won the sb!! U make the best product out of what u have, play up the talent man!! I dnt want to hear ish abt being optomistic, anything other than winning should be unacceptable for an nfl team. Can I get some of my money back off tickets? Hey no, so I expect the best product for my money on the field!! Ok, its early n d am n I’m still pissed, so let me end here!

My gripe, this
That people even have gripes. I know we will beat some teams this year, and 6-10 is probably were we will be, hopefully we win them all. But I’ve watched football long enough now to know were going places. Even if we finish with a worst record then what we had last year, as long as we stay competive in games like we have so far, then I have no gripes “THIS YEAR” Why new coaching staff inserting new plays to new players that played a oppitsite way last year. What if all you did was back-flips all the time, then one day was ask to do a front-flip, y’think you would do it as well the first try? WE WERE THE LAST RANKED TEAM LAST YEAR………….lol this is why Peppers call us fickle, were a on and off fan-base……… All I ask is let Cam Newton do no wrong, please don’t run him off for complaining…..Thx and this was my gripe:-)

but rather in a lack of will.

Here's my take:
1 – Couldn’t agree more, plan to do a post of ST this week
2 – I’m going to trust the coaches on Goodson, if he is a risk to fumble the ball then I agree he needs to sit. But should he get another chance? yes, I think he should. I agree Pilares has yet to do anything but I think our ST blocking blows. Neither our KR or PR is getting any room to operate
3 – I think thi sis more to wearing down and then having a rookie QB. I think this will get better but it might not be until next year
4 – I’ll have to trust the coaches again but it did hurt not having Otah in there yesterday. As much promise as Bell has he is a rookie
5 – I don’t have a problem with the way schedules are drawn up. I also think when the season is over you will see we did not have the hardest schedule based on how our competition finished the season. The Vikings, Colts and Titans will not be as good as predicted for this season.
Nice post…prob put it on front page
I thought Pilares didn't
show the enthusiasm of a kick off returner. He got 1 out to the 23, he took a knee 2 times in the endzone when there were no defenders on the tv screen. A lot of the good returns so far this year have come from deep in the endzones, that is going to be the new standard for returns since the kicks are going to be deeper now. Goodson showed that he was winning to try to return them. He had a few good returns that were called back for penalties also. I say put Goodson back on kickoff returns.

In my opinion......
It’s too early to give up on Pilares. It was his first game action. Hardly enough to cast final judgement. I thought some of Goodson’s returns were ill advised anyway. Maybe the coaching staff told him when to bring it out and when not to?

im actually a pilares fan-hopeful
hopeful that he’ll become the next smitty or excel in the slot for us. i was just saying, in the opportunities he’s had, he hasnt shown anything as a returner, and goodson’s tape will show that he has.
SIMPLE AND PLAIN
I just don't see how anyone could suggest that Pilares got enough chances yesterday.
I want to see the kid on the field. Until they decide to try him at WR, I want to see him in as many other ball handling situations as possible. Like you, I see a little of Smitty in him and would like to exploit as much of it as possible. I am by no means bagging on Goodson, but he’s gotten himself in the dog house and I’m not waiting around for him to get out.

interesting how hang time is now a bigger deal on kickoffs
for e.g., a line drive to the back of the end zone should be returned because the coverage has had less time to get there. but a high one 4 yards deep should probably be downed because the coverage will meet the returner at the 12-17 yard line. it’s a new science, and again, our coaches don’t seem to have mastered it yet. but just get those fast goody legs on the field!
SIMPLE AND PLAIN
Just a suggestion Jaxon........
Let’s just call it “Mediocre Teams”, “Other Teams”, or “3rd Teams”, or something like that. There is nothing “special” about our special teams.

And someone going:
“me me me me me me me me” repeatedly.

Typo,, winning to try should be willing to try.

What is going on with all the knee jerk reactions from you guys?
Holy @#$%, I cannot believe you guys are so frustrated already. This team will have 8-10 losses this season. They won’t get it together until week 10 or 11. Young team = tons of mistakes.
Newton, Pilares, McClain, Fua, Bell, Edwards and Lafell will get better. The only players I would be singling out are Martin, Godfry and Goodson. Coaches are already on Goodson for playing poorly and not improving on his weaknesses. These players have had more than enough time to get better. This is a season of growth which includes close game losses and bone headed meltdowns. The last 5-6 games is when we “should” see the overall improvement.
We really don't need Goodson
While I agree he’s too talented to be in a T -shirt, he’s really not good enough to be playing either with the loads of talent we have on offense. He needs to be traded, unless he can play LB….
