Poll - Should Panthers Trade RB Mike Goodson?
Panther 3rd year RB Mike Goodson is withering on the vine from lack of use, so should the Panthers trade him before the trade deadline on the 18th?
Goodson should have some trade value after averaging 4.4 YPC last season, on 103 carries for 452 yards, and 40 catches for 310 yards (a 7.8 yard average). This is Goodson's 3rd year, and it seems like the writing is on the wall for Goodson. Goodson wasn't even active for Sunday's game against the Saints, and he will be a free agent at the end of the 2012 season, so his future may well be elswhere. The Panthers may not want to trade Goodson, because they need a 3rd RB, but they're not using him now, so why not trade something they aren't using for something of more value?
Here are the NFL teams with rushing problems, and their current team YPC.
3.0 YPC - Titans - Their problem isn't RB's Chris Johnson & Ringer, but their O-Line blocking.
3.2 YPC - Giants - Bradshaw 4.0 YPC & Jacobs 3.1 YPC
3.3 YPC - Jets - Goodson would be very good paired with big RB Shonn Greene
3.4 YPC - Browns - Goodson would be great paired with big RB Payton Hillis (who's a free agent at the end of this season), and catching passes out of the backfield from Colt McCoy.
3.4 YPC - Cowboys - It's mostly due to Felix Jones injuries, and the have a RB simular to Goodson in DeMarco Murray.
3.8 YPC - Colts - RB Joseph Addai is injured and breaking down, and Donald Brown hasn't lived up to his draft pick, but they may have bigger problems.
3.8 YPC - Seahawks - They might need a big RB more, and Goodson is sort of a duplication of Leon Washington.
4.0 YPC - Bengals - Bernard Scott Is an OK backup for Cedric Benson, but Benson is fighting a 3 game suspension.
4.3 YPC - Broncos - Willis McGahee has 3 100 yard rushing games, and has pushed 2009 1st round pick Knowshon Moreno to the bench, and could use a fast RB who's also a good receiver.
Goodson would also be a great fit for the Packers, but their RB's are OK.
What could the Panthers likely get for Goodson? A 4th round pick might be good, a 3rd might be too big a stretch (except maybe for the Jets, a team with playoff hopes who's likely to be drafting late). The only teams that might trade a player, and those are long shots, are the Cowboys (maybe 2nd year CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, 6-0, 208, 4.30-40), or the Bengals.
I would love to see the Panthers trade Goodson to the Bengals for one of their D-Linemen (their defense is ranked #1). I would love to get either 2nd year DT Geno Atkins (6-1, 300, 23 years old, a Combine 4.88-40, a Pro Day 4.75-40, 1.68-10) or 5th year DT Pat Sims (6-2, 330, 25 years old, 5.06-40, 1.68-10, but those were at 310 pounds). Both are playing in a 3 man DT rotation, with Atkins starting along side Domata Peko, so the Bengals might be reluctent to trade either of them, even if the Panthers sent them a DT like Niblett along with Goodson. Atkins is the pass rushing DT the Panthers need, and probably should have drafted rather than Norwood. Here are their career numbers.
Geno Atkins:
2011 - 5 games, 5 starts, 15 tackles, 8 solo, 2.5 sacks, 1 pass defended.
2010 - 16 games, 1 start, 16 tackles, 10 solo, 3.0 sacks.
Pat Sims:
2011 - 5 games, 0 starts, 11 tackles, 6 solo, 1 sack
2010 - 14 games, 8 starts, 31 tackles, 19 solo, 2.5 sacks, 1 pass defended
2009 - 16 games, 8 starts, 34 tackles, 19 solo, 0.5 sacks
2008 - 11 games, 6 starts, 36 tackles, 22 solo, 1 sack
So, what do you think?

i actually talked to james on twitter about this the other day
"The way y'all are lollygaggin around here with them picks and them shovels, you'd think it was 120 degrees...can't be more than 114."

I dont know how much value he had due to him not playing so far this year but i think he should have 3rd round value. I like him but he’s expendable. We have D-Will and J-Stew, plus we can still pick Sutton back up. If someone offered a 3rd or a decent DT I’d take it
3rd round is over-valuaing him
teams see that he is sitting on the bench and he has fumble issues which are a huge deal for running backs.

The question wasn't what you think teams would give.
It was what would it take for you to want to trade him. I’m in the third round pick group myself. We’re one injury away from being thin at the position. Josh Vaughn, while not having many opportunities, has not shown an ability to do anything at the NFL level. Aside from Goodson’s propensity to put the ball on the ground, we know he can run the rock. I wouldn’t give him away for nothing.

Third would be nice
but I don’t think he would command that high a pick, fourth at best. Anyways if we’d trade him for a pick why not just wait until after the season? At least we’d know where in the round it would fall and we would protect ourselves from an injury at RB. Trading him for another player would be interesting, esp Atkins, have no idea what Goody’s relative value is though. On a side note, I’d hate to see him go. For some reason he’s been my favorite role player on our team for a while.
Honestly a 4th or 5th pick would be nice
I mean what is the point in keeping him if we arent going to use him. We can get a pick for him and its not like we really need him when we got 2 pro bowl caliber RB’s.
It would have to be a player trade for a DT for me
The picks you could get for him don’t net you a player with his skill level on a normal basis.
I think John Fox would love to have him
After how well he played last year + all the Broncos problems.. Tebow could use a good pass catching RB to help him progress.
with all of the Loyd talk,
i could be persuaded to give up goodson for loyd and maybe a 5th rounder.
I know it will be up soon somewhere on here
PFT is reporting the Brandon Lloyd is on the trading block and carolina is in conversations with them.

i'd be down with a trade for him depending on the cost...
he is a FA after this year so it’d have to be really cheap, like a 6th or 7th

This would be awesome
But, apparently Lloyd wants big time money (not saying he doesn’t deserve it he did lead the league in receptions last year) and I feel like this would kind of undermine our youth movement. Lloyd is only two years younger than Smith. That being said if we get him I’d be stoked.
"When I've arrived, close my eyes"
depends on if we are serious about contending for the big game next year or not
If Rivera and Hurney think our time is sooner than later, we’d be fools not to pick Loyd up. If they’re planning on building steadiy through the draft then we should likely pass on this guy.
Cleveland and Denver make the most since. Cleveland doesnt have an athletic pass catching back and Denver could use one as well, plus Fox likes him and knows how to use him. Cleveland doesnt have anyone that really interests me so they’d have to give a 3rd for me. With Denver I would take Lloyd since his value is a little low, I’d throw a 4th in there to make it happen.
I Just Made A Post/Poll About This Report
I’m not sure Lloyd (6-0, 188) fits the Panthers need for a big WR to start along with Steve Smith, or their long term needs, given that he’s 30 years old.
However, Lloyd would be of much more use than Goodson has been so far.
But Steve Smith is "Ten Foot Tall and Bulletproof," which satisfies the height requirement held so dear by so many.
How tall is Wes Welker? Darren Sproles?? Everybody’s all caught up in inches, pounds, and 40 times… which I do like, btw, PanthersRoar, but we don’t need to build a team based on WR measurables. And besides that…
WE NEED A BIG HONKING NOSE TACKLE THAT SMELLS BAD AND WANTS TO HURT SOMEBODY…. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
No worries, just channeling my inner-Sam Kinnison there. Sorry, Sorry.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Unfortunately, It's A Very Thin Draft For NT's
After Washington’s Alameda Ta’amu goes in the late 1st or early 2nd round, the next NT (junior Dontai Powe 3rd to 5th round) may not go until the 5th round. The only other big NT’s aren’t projected to even be drafted. Clemson’s Brandon Thompson, Alabama’s Josh Chapman, and Penn State’s Devon Still might be called NT’s, but their only around 310 pounds.

Maybe Goodson for Tebow?
Then Tebow would backup Cam.
Heck No!
As mush as Deangelo and Johnathan get hurt? We need to keep 5 RB’s as long as we have those two at running back. But on the other hand runnung backs are a dime a dozen. Harsh, but true.
