Panthers Week 5 Game Ball of Week Fan Poll

CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 09: Legedu Naanee #17 of the Carolina Panthers runs after a catch against the New Orleans Saints during their game at Bank of America Stadium on October 9, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

It's time to pick another game ball of the week winner brought to you by Samsung. Though we have another loss to mull over we do have some nice performances to pick from this week. The list starts with some of the usual stars:

QB Cam Newton

Newton rebounded from a bad INT to start the game with 16 completions on 31 passes for 224 yards, 2 TDs and 1 TD rushing; a 83 QB rating. The rookie QB was finally able to score the go-ahead TD in the 4th quarter but the defense could not prevent the Saints from answering.

RB DeAngelo Williams

Williams finally cracked the century mark with 9 rushes for 115 yards, including a beauty of a score on a 59 yard option play from Newton. Williams showed he is a great RB when given a little space.

WR Steve Smith

Smitty logged 3 catches for 79 yards with none ever prettier than his 54 yard score after out leaping Jabari Greer for the ball and then stiff arming him to break free.

WR Legadu Naanee

It's only fair to put him on the list for leading the team with 4 receptions for 63 yards including a nice 28 yard catch.

SS Sherrod Martin

Martin added a nice INT in a classic being in the right place at the right time type of catch. Martin added 5 tackles and a pass defensed.

LB James Anderson

Anderson logged 10 combined tackles and a sweet tackle for loss on a stretch play to Sproles.

SS Charles Godfrey

Godfrey has 9 combined tackles and 2 passes defensed and overall had a strong game.

DE Greg Hardy

The Kraken had 5 combined tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a QB hurry and a pass defensed. A very nice line even for a mythical creature.

Take the poll after the jump...

The thing that impressed me the most

was the way that Cam rebounded from that pick. The first throw of the game he throws an INT, yet he bounced back like nothing happened. He didn’t let that shake his confidence at all. Awesome job by cam this week, no doubt the game ball IMO

Cam Newton this week and....

EVERY WEEK.

The guy just flat out deserves more than just the game ball. Cam Newton by the way he has played deserves to be 4-1 possible 5-0. The team has let him down far more than his mistakes have hurt the team. The game ball is the least we can give him for being the reason it is entertaining to sit down and watch Panthers football. In fact I teach a trumpet lesson on Sundays and I told my student that our lesson must not interfere with Panthers football because watching them is my first priority on Sundays

turnovers and red zone failures

He’s had a couple interceptions where the Panther should’ve caught it. There have been other plays where the receiver just drops it. We’ve all talked about nanee, but Smitty has had a couple drops, and LaFell slipped in the end zone…then there is the Shockey PI call from last week. Let’s not forget that he leads the team in rushing TDs, and was leading the team in rushing yards after week 3, and maybe even after week 4.

that's not a stiff arm

In the WWE, that’s more like the Rock Bottom. There should be pyrotecnics every team he crushes someone like that. I also love that it’s a starting LB, and not a 180 pound CB.

The sad thing about is that after this gif Steve Smith lets loose a powerful blast of his energy sending all remaining Saints flying back 50 feet.

Unfortunately the gif ends before we get to see that. A shame isn’t it?

There was a story long ago about a man who saved the world. A legendary receiver with speed as fast as light itself. But he has passed on. His journey is one with the Raiders. But now, a new star has risen in the heart of the South. His veins bleeds orange. His legs are thick, his movement swift, and his hands are as large as the heart in his chest. His name is Sammy Watkins. And together with Sherlock Boyd, they will solve many mysteries together.

Rivera spoke about having two premier backs today in his press conference.

He was asked if he felt having two #1 backs was extraneous and Rivera responded “absolutely not” and went on to say if they want to pound it up the middle they’re going to use Stewart but if they want to get to the edges and attack with speed they’re going to use Dwill.

around the 9:35 mark.

I think the dynamic of the different styles they bring is a valuable asset to the offense, they just need to get the packages and plays worked out and it takes time. We spent the 1st round picks on them, hit big on both picks, it would be a shame to let one walk. Especially Stewart at this point in time. I’m sure Hurney was thinking long term (especially with a rookie QB and rookie HC, DC, OC etc.) and I don’t think he would have resigned Dwill if it meant letting Stew walk.

I hate to admit this, I cracked up laughing when he threw that interception for the very first play of the game, I have no idea why. Its ok though, Cam was laughing also after he threw the pick.

BTW watching this Lions Bears game right now. Lions D making me so jealous, I really hate to say this but watching a defense like the Lions makes me cringe when I think of how our defense plays. I have faith though come next season Hurney will change that through FA and the draft.

Quite frankly id love for Panthers to beat the Lions but that is one game I wouldnt be furious if we lost. If we can get a good D like Lions we will win ton more games. I really hope we build a very solid defense next season. As a panthers fan the Lions give me hope. If the Lions can have mediocre season after mediocre season, get their no 1 franchise QB in Stafford and now be legit SB contenders, then we easily can also.

by PantherTrain on Oct 10, 2011 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

well it took a bit more than that

What gives me hope is our offense is set. The only thing I would change on our offense is for us to get a legit No 2 weapon at WR like Alshon or Vjax, other than that the Offense from Cam, the O line, RB corps, TE and WR is perfect aside from a solid no 2 WR. We have a super bowl caliber offense. Next season with Ron Edwards back along with Beason, a good corner through the draft and another DT signing, we are set.

DWill period.

finally got the 100 yd game. Now why did we only give it to him 9 times?

i think it's bad play calling we weren't that far behind!

especially the last drive we could have put the game away and run some clock but didn’t!

This has been a public service announcement.......

Can't pick one

None of them played better than I expect them to, and we lost. To be fair, my expectations of all of these guys is pretty high.

If I were to pick, it would be DWill for showing back up, ANdrewson for running the D so well while putting up great stats, or Kraken for that amazing play. But those guys are so good they should be doing this just about every week.

Maybe Cam’s expectations of this team are rubbing off on me.

I voted for the Kraken.

Great stat line from Hardy, and he was around the ball seemingly all game long.

This comment section has officially been Tater'd.

its tough asking such an eccentric person to lead, so I have a lot of respect for the guy for stepping up and taking it by the horns

He’s a nice guy but doesn’t really fit the football player stereotype at all, and is probably hard to relate with for some of the other guys. He’s an art afficionado and a very introspective individual, not a charasmatic personality that guys gravitate to.

And that's my thinking in giving him the game ball.

It’s easy for Jon Beason to lead, it comes natural to him. But for Anderson to step into the Beast’s shoes and do what isn’t natural for him to do, and to do it well… well that’s admirable in my book.

I don't always fail, but when I do...
I do it awesomely.
