2011 NFL Draft: Panthers New Pick

So thanks to Andrew Luck the Panthers have to decide what to do with their pick now. Whether to go with A.J. Green with the pick or trade down to find another quarterback ( none of whom are listed in the scouting top 20). I decided to look at the options from out side the box. Taking myself out of the equation as a Panthers fan and jsut looking at the best option. Well I think that I have done a pretty good job of doing that.

So when you look at the Panthers from the outside and pay attention to what they need. It is quite obvious at what positions we are most hurting at. We can't really say the QB position is the worst because Jimmy Clausen was a rookie and rookies struggle. Not WR because we just had two rookies this year that showed improvement. OL isn't really a concern that needs immediate attention in the first round. DL is young and smaller than you would hope but they did alright without JP. So what else is there?

Cornerback! The Panthers have to get a better  secondary. Martin and Godfrey did have blown coverages but they did the job well. Gamble, Marshall, and Munnerlyn weren't awful but weren't great wither. Gamble is starting to turn into a distraction and Marshall is out of Carolina. Munnerlyn is getting better but he is too small to be going up against WRs like Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitzgerald, and any other WR that is over 6 feet tall. Not the best odds. So who could the panthers draft that could match up with the best in the game and even out the size difference.

Patrick Peterson from LSU. He is 6'1" and weighs 222 so he has the build. He is ranked as the 4th best player in the draft and could become a shutdown corner in the future. He has very good speed and and can make the tackle in open space (129 Tackles in his career). Of course I'm not just gonna look at CB.

Nick Fairley and De'Quan Bowers are both very good defensive linemen that can both get to the QB and stop the run. Both have good size Fairley 6'5" 298 and Bowers 6'4" 280. Both are ranked 2 and 3 in the rankings.

So given the fact that these rankings were made before Luck said he was staying in school. There are the top three in the rankings at positions we need.
