Is this it? Could biggest hurdle for Andrew Luck to Panthers about to be crossed?

Filed to ESPN and reported by Chris Mortensen via Twitter there are numerous coaches in Miami packing up their things.

While head coach Tony Sparano has not been identified as one of them it's become abundantly clear that the Miami Dolphins and Stanford HC Jim Harbaugh have been discussing the job and are rumored to be willing to offer him a 5 year deal worth $8 million per year.

Nothing firm at this time, and we'll update as it happens but clearly Harbaugh leaving Stanford would be the biggest remaining hurdle keeping QB Andrew Luck in school.

I friend of mine that is a huge Miami fan........

seems to think that the Dolphins are going to promote Tony Sparano and bring in Harbaugh. I told him that I thought he was full of shit. You never know though.

8 million dollars a year??? That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. For what? Getting Luck to attend Stanford? That kind of money sets back franchises. Good luck with that Miami.

Dolphins have a lot of celeb owners. they could pay him more then any other team in the NFL. i think they want the sexy pick regardless of cost. Plus there is a tight Michigan bond between Miami and Jim.

I believe he is

According to the 49ers source, the panthers did try to call him, but Harbough has not returned the calls. He may use Miami and the 49ers to jack up his offer and then end up calling the panthers.
I think he is going to be a big bust.

I'm glad he didn't call us back...

let the Dolphins owner waste his time going cross country only to set the price the 49ers will have to pay. If he does go to Miami though lord there will be a ton of pissed off 49er fans. I was reading the 49ers blog and they just really think they are the cats meow as far as franchises.

8M is ludicrous

8M for a college coach who has never coached in NFl is a little too much of an over-kill…don’t you think?
I still think if He did respond to the Panthers and we offered him 6.5M, he will take it since his chances of succeeding in the NFL with Luck is higher with the Panthers than with the Dolphins.
if he is playing hardball…I say forget him.

It is an obscene amount of money

But, Seattle started this by paying Pete Carroll over $6 million last year for a guy who failed when he was in the NFL.

Harbaugh has become THE hot commodity and benefiting from two franchises having a pissing match over who can have something to excite a disenfranchised fanbase pissed off it’s been almost two decades since either were relevant

Also said if new CBA rookie pay scale wasn’t reached would they pay Luck the money he would demand. JR better write Luck the big check or there will be one pissed off franchise. I don't think Richardson is that stupid

Assuming Luck declares, I think Richardson would be a fool not to draft Luck. I think he understands how fragile our fan base is right now after our crappy season. By not drafting Luck, it would send his entire franchise into a downward spiral that might not ever end. To be honest, this is a huge turning point in how our franchise is going to perform the next decade. If Richardson doesn’t want to shell out the money to pay for Luck, then he better be prepared for half-empty stadiums.

I agree

I have been awaiting the announcement of Harbaugh being hired by Miami or SF just so they hype over who’s going to get him can go away. I’m sure it will just be replaced by media reports of what a brilliant hire it was.

I just hope it’s not SF, otherwise it will be four months of “how does SF get the #1 draft pick from Carolina, rather than what with Andrew Luck bring to Carolina and does he make them a contender”.

That’s assuming they would talk about us if Miami hires Harbaugh, but they won’t so….

And with a Hurney built team I think it is a win win. Remember that the HC has no decision making power. All they want the coach to do is coach the (very young) team he is given. Ryan seems to have the personality to do just that.

Being able to coach and lead a young group is probably one of the biggest pieces this puzzle.

I don’t agree with bringing Henning back. I know that Fox probably limited what he could do with his offense, but I don’t like having retreads on a team where everything is supposed to be heading in a different direction.

I don't think...........

Henning is going to coach anywhere in 2011, or ever for that matter. I’ve read numerous times this season that he was going to retire. He’s 68 years old and I doubt he want’s to have to uproot his family considering he’s close to the end of his career. Also, I wouldn’t want him to come back now. I’d like the next OC to be able to install his system and be around for several years perfecting it. Henning would come in and then leave with the job half done.

Kind of undermines his ’we’re as united as ever’ spiel when two owners are talking about over $8 million per year for an unproven coach

Yes

But it’s tough to say the reason teams aren’t profitable are the players when on the same day ESPN extends Monday Night Football for 1 billion dollars and teams are throwing the highest offers ever at head coaches.

Follow me on Twitter! @James_Dator

But in the same sense

The coach is responsible for the team winning, look at the Peppers deal, & Bradford, that coaches entire salary isnt what Bradford is getting for possible 1 year. I know it isnt possibly 1 year now, but at the time of the signing it could have been.

by MrBernz on Jan 6, 2011 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you in theory, but reality is coaches don’t make that much.

Steve Spagnulo got a 4 year, $11.5 million contract when he joined St. Louis- $2.87 million per year.

I don’t doubt there’s a disparity, it’s just tough to sell the world on the owners being cash strapped when they’re offering the biggest deals ever

I'm wondering if Harbaugh was actually saving the Panthers the drama by not calling them back

He played for this team, despite what Richardson said he knows Harbaugh. It’s clear Jim Harbaugh knew he would get more money than Pete Carroll ($6.5 million per) and that the Carolina Panthers would never pay that much.

Perhaps I’m being too sentimental, but it wouldn’t surprise me if both sides talked in the past and Harbaugh knew the fit wouldn’t be right due to the $$.

I was all for Harbaugh too...

But this whole situation has kind of turned me away from him. I’m glad we aren’t part of this bidding war. I think Luck is the prize and we have the inside track on that one without a doubt.

by MindMachine on Jan 6, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think Luck's declaring.

Looking back at the post-game interviews, both he and Harbaugh said, “I don’t want to rude, but let’s just talk about the game.”

If he’d decided to stay, he’d have told his school then, just as Harbaugh would’ve. I don’t buy the idea of his being able to put off the decision until the next week. JMO.

Off topic I know, but has anyone seen the new OT rules for the PO?

I don’t like this new crap. I know it sucks to lose by a FG in sudden death, but if you can’t keep the offense of another team from doing it then you do not deserve to win anyway.

Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader

Yeah, I never liked the ‘win the coin toss win the game’ thing, but that new rule is weird.

by SDcarolinafan on Jan 6, 2011 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

My deal is, what is the difference if a team were to do it with 2 seconds left in the 4th quarter to win compared to a team doing it at 14:30 left in OT? It is the same thing. As I said, I believe that if your defense cannot hold the other team back, you do not deserve to win anyway.

May the toughest man (team) win.

Football also has more players, they dont have to play all their starters if they think some1 is too tired or injured. That would give the back up players more pride too if they came in & won the game for the starters. Maybe that could be the next rule, start overtime with second string teams…..

It's to force teams to try to score TD's in OT, instead of FG's.

A good kick return currently influences the outcome greatly because teams can just run the ball a couple of times and kick a FG. With the new rules, doing this puts them back on defense and if the other team scores a TD, they win. I think we’ll get used to it and like it over time.

Yeah, but then you’d have a bone head coach playing OT like he was going to get the ball back and finding out he lost because the new rules only applied to the regular season, and it would create a huge cluster (word that rhymes with truck) for weeks or months.
