Carolina Panthers hire Sean McDermott as defensive coordinator

According to multiple sources from ESPN the Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms naming former Philadelphia Eagles DC Sean McDermott to the same position with the Panthers. In line with the common theme of the Panthers this off-season they saw a guy they liked, moved quickly and locked him up.

For those concerned about McDermott rest assured that this will not be his defense alone, it will be a collaborative effort with head coach Ron Rivera. McDermott and his Jim Johnson training has utilized some of the most creative 4-3 blitzing in the NFL and paired with Rivera who led the NFL's #1 defense in 2010, Panthers fans should be in for a treat in 2011.

We will see a very aggressive style of defense in Carolina for the first time in a while. The prior two seasons under Ron Meeks utilized a very relaxed cover-2 scheme that concentrated on preventing the big play, rather than making plays on defense themselves. I can only imagine what defensive packages we'll see Carolina utilize with Greg Hardy and Everette Brown on 3rd down situations, also Thomas Davis will be more of an 'x-factor' on defense.

I don't know about you, but I think this is a truly fantastic hire.

DISCLAIMER: I said he would be a candidate for HC, but we still hired him. :-)

Good hire

It certainly shows we are going to be extremely aggressive on defense. I’m hoping with Rivera’s tinkering, the red zone debacle that was Mcdermott’s defense last year, won’t show up for us. I think Charles Johnson will do great in McDermott’s scheme.

by Blahbla on Jan 17, 2011 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Only thing that worries me...

is that 31 TD passes allowed last year. That being said, I love this. This is gonna be a defense unlike any we have seen during the Fox Era. God I cannot wait. There better be a season next year or so help me God!

Meeks as secondary coach will help a lot with that

Rivers/McDermott/Meeks are an insanely strong basis for the defense. Once we know who the LB coach will be it will really take shape.

that he will heavily involved in the defense. Having a creative guy like Sean McDermott overseen by Rivera looks like a good deal. Synergies can be had!

I think Rivera will help him improve his timing on blitz calls...

Judging by what most of the Philly fans are saying, it seems like he didn’t have that same sense of timing that Johnson did (although I’d be surprised if he did lol he IS only 36). However, Rivera is really good at getting the timing down, and having all that experience as a fellow DC will only help mcdermott. I just hope he doesn’t pull a Del Rio and have a lights out freshmen year for us, only to get snatched up next offseason!

Didn't have nearly the same quality of personel JJ had either.

Folks don’t listen to those bitter Philly fans.
The credible folks in the philly media are calling this correctly.
McDermott was the scapegoat for the Eagles FO’s failure to adequately address the teams’ defensive personel needs.

From BGN

‘Mike Trgovac is a guy with the kind of background that appeals to me. He was the defensive line coach for Ray Rhodes here in Philly. Trgovac did an excellent job during his stay here. He ran the defense for John Fox and the Panthers for a few years and had good success there. Trgovac is now the line coach for Green Bay and has done a good job with their young players. I like his track record as a line coach and also the fact he’s worked with creative defensive minds like Fox and Capers. The big problem with Trgovac is that he’s currently busy with the Packers. If they win on Sunday he’s going to be busy a couple of more weeks. Do you wait on him? ’

Working under a friend in Rivera is a great place for McDermott to be. The beat writers here in Philly say he interviewed with the Broncos first and was offered the job, but chose to go to Carolina to work under Rivera.

Rivera is the one more or less in charge of the defense and McDermott can continue to learn under him. I can’t think of a better landing spot for him.

He was also the victim of high expectations (taking over for Jimmie Johnson, a defensive coaching legend) and less-than-stellar personnel (we have a lot of young guys and late-round picks here).

I’m not too broken up about his departure, but I still think he’s got the chance to be a good coach, and he landed in a good situation (for him.)

I am from the bgn eagles blog and I want you guys to know this young coach is smart and very hard working. No one will doubt his effort. I think Philly made a mistake letting him go. He just did not have much talent to work with. Who besides Mickell, Cole or Samuel, would you consider for your defense? Nobody right? The guy had no talent to work with although we had some good rookies they were both injured and on the IR atthe end of the year. A bunch of FA and 7th rounders as starters. The DT position was ok with Paterson and Dixon, that’s about it. He may have tried TOO hard to compensate but what could anyone expect him to do? Good luck in your rebuilding efforts!

Eh, many people on BGN think he’s a clod who won’t amount to anything, In fact, I’ve only seen a couple people who think his firing was a bad move, and I’m not one of them. His performance wasn’t good in Philly,

That said, he’s only 36 (very, very young for a DC), he’s learned from one of the greatest DCs of our generation, and he could very easily figure things out in a few years.

I think you’re the first to cross over and kill our spirits lol I mean, it’s the same deal with us and the broncos page….he’s a good defensive coach, but they’re expecting him to light it up offensively (insert joke here).

I think a big reason why we’re really excited is on top of him being young, RIvera has already said that he’s going to have a big hand in the defense, so ginger snap is going to be doing a lot of learning this year….

thank you for your insight, I think most of us are excited with the hire...

oddly enough our DT position is our biggest weakness. But McD will have a Rivera’s guidance and many solid pieces to work with here. At DE we have Charles Johnson (3rd rounder) that had 11.5 sacks this year, Everett Brown (2nd rounder) and Hardy (our 6th round diamond in the rough. A pair of 1st rounders in Beason and Davis, and another 1st rounder in Gamble at CB. We need another corner to pair up with Gamble and 2 new DTs but we’ve always invested our picks into defense (to which he could get the 1st overall pick to work with this year), except for last year’s draft. (a QB and 3 WRs was an anomaly for us.)
Being so young and working under another Jim Johnson guy in Rivera, I think he could have a bright future here.

Great info, thanks for sharing with us.

I live in the Philly area and still follow the Eagles and agree with every thing in your post. I think this is a great fit for Sean and think he’ll do well in Carolina. Good luck to you guys also, hopefully the injury bug will be kinder to you guys and your defense can keep pace with the offense.
The Eagles offense put up an incredible show this season. Lotta fun to watch.
