The Offseason Priority Least Talked About
JIMMY F#%@ING CLAW-SON
....Just kidding :-)
I think one of our top priorities should be getting a backup Linebacker that can cover tight ends. IF we lose Thomas Davis at any point, we will get shlacked even by simple tight end post routes. IMO it is imperative that we get a backup plan, because I am tired of having the other team at 3rd and long only to see one of our linebacker's burnt for a touchdown.
I am pretty confident that new coach Ron Rivera recognizes this, as he was a great linebacker and wants to utilize the TE position more here in Carolina.
Kellen Winslow (twice), Jermaine Gresham, Jeremy Shockey, Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis, Daniel Fells, Cameron Morrah, Tony Gonzalez (twice),
Kellen opening wide so he can taste our....... tears. C'mon, let's have some maturity guys.
Know what these fine gentlemen had in common? They either led the team in Rec. Yards or had a touchdown against our beloved Panthers this season. That is not even counting Heap, who had 5 catches for 69 yards, or Heath Miller, who had 73 yards off 5 catches. That is ridiculous, and even though most of those guys are pretty big names, Cameron Morrah and Daniel Fells show that it wasn't always a product of facing big time talent. We need someone else who can cover a TE.

Seriously, THIS guy beat us?
Although this also makes me want us to draft or pick up a top flight tight end as well, because all but one of those teams beat us on the gridiron.
Some of you may know that I rarely write a FanPost, usually just stick to comments and F-Shots, but my three favorite professional teams (Bobcats Braves Panthers) all got a new Head Coach recently.. coincidently, two are Latino (Hivera and Fredi Gonzalez). I have been very happy and loving all the new (for the better) change, and I had noticed little conversation this offseason about said topic, so I thought 'what they hay' and produced this.
Seriously?!......oh wait not this guy, I am actually scared of him
THIS GUY?!?!? SERIOUSLY?!?!!!!???

Good point
I was wondering if having Patrick Patterson would help – he is a physical freak and could do a lot of things that Davis does.
PP is a CB and would in most cases not be covering a TE

If an opposing offenses' best player is a TE, you might see Peterson sent inside to cover him a little.
Charles Woodson does this quite often (and will also blitz from the slot).
But yeah, typically you think more about OLBs and SSs when it comes to covering TEs.
And yes, being unable to cover TEs was our achilles heel on defense in 2010 (that, and a lack of pass rush at times).
Let me hold about tree-fiddy?
I don't recall this specific aspect of our season very well, and I also didn't even watch all the games.
James Anderson should have the athleticism to do it, however, if he’s resigned. I recall one or two times when a tight end beat us deep, and a safety was actually on him. Anderson may, or may not, have gotten burned an inordinate amount of times in that regard, but surely it wouldn’t be an athletic problem. It would probably be a technique problem, which can be fixed. Rivera was a linebacker, so maybe he can help if it’s an issue.
stuff 'bout stuff.
Also, let's not forget second year linebacker Sean Ware.
He runs a sub 4.5 40. I believe he was relegated to the practice squad as a rookie this past season. They thought enough of him to resign him for this upcoming offseason, though. He has a ton of potential, if he can take that athleticism and turn it into production on the field.
stuff 'bout stuff.
This has always been a weakness of our d
I hope some of the opposing teams TE success was due to vulnerabilities in the schemes of our defense, such as placing such an emphasis on not getting beat over the top of the of the secondary and the linebackers playing shallow @ the line. If you look at most cover 2 schemes being used they are vulnerable to passes in the intermediate area between the zones. Davis helps mask this deficiancy in the scheme through his athletic ability and coverage ability due to being a safety in college.
"Do I look like a guy with a plan?"
Yeah, some of the best plays on tight ends came when Beason left his area of zone coverage, and chased them to the back of the secondary.
stuff 'bout stuff.

I think once Davis comes back
and with the scheme change, this will become irrelevant. Something to keep an eye on though.

Tampa 2 = Tight End's wet dream
The best way to stop a tight end is to force him to block, because the pass rush is strong. If you give a QB time, someone will be open, and often it’s the TE. Winslow crushed us because we let Freeman escape. Sometimes the TE is covered by a LB, other times it’s the safety’s man.
All that said, I am excited to be getting TD back and healthy. I haven’t heard how his rehab’s going, but he’s not one to be lazy about it. I fully expect him to be the force at WILL we say in the 1st half of ’09.

Jason Williams
he looked good against the run when he played. The tried to keep him out of coverage. It was the opposite for Harris…a better coverage guy but too small to be a hammer in the run-game.

I think it's the least talked about because
Beason covered TEs quite well this season. I can remember him being step to step with receivers and TEs this year and swatting away balls and TD passes. So, no I don’t think it’s a major priority, especially since our passing D was 11th best in the NFL.
no, beason failed badly

One of Beason's strenghts is his ability to go step for step with some of the best TE's in the league.
Just look at that play against Arizona where he swatted away that deep post. He was covering Early Doucet, a slot receiver, but the point still stands.

Guess I was watching a different 52 then haha
i love him, but he was not very good in coverage downfield.. Do you not see the stats I put up? There is a reason for them

Perhaps he picked a bad year to have a bad year. :P
Whatever the reason may be for our struggles, I know Beast shouldn’t be a part of the problem in the future. I’ve seen him run step for step with Tony Gonzalez, and make incredible plays in coverage.

Weakside and middle linebackers don't cover tight ends as much as strongside backers and safeties, I believe.
I don’t think we can count on Beason to be that man unless it’s zone.

Beasons strength is run support
Mike LB almost never has coverage responsibilities for TE in cover 2. He usually has coverage on RB releasing from backfield. Beason is OK at this but his best abilities are in sideline to sideline pursuit of ballcarrier and delivering the knockout shot. Davis(or other Sam LB) has TE responsabilities. That is what the moniker “strong” applies to- the side of the offensive line that the TE is lined up on. Mike LB always has underneath zone behind Dline/ in front of safety in the Cover 2.
"Do I look like a guy with a plan?"
If we run the Tampa 2
Aren’t we dropping the Mike back deep to cover the middle?

Yes, that's true. Beason excels at getting the drop and defending the middle zone.
