New Panthers coach, Ron Rivera, says he looking for a new franchise quarterback. The Panthers have two superb passers currently under contract, Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike. Matt Moore’s contract ends this year, so he is also an option for the Panthers to resign. Which, if any, of these players would be the right fit for the job of the franchise quarterback? All three of the above players will need work to achieve greatness.
The college careers of these players have certainly helped them. They all competed for BCS schools. Jimmy Clausen played at Notre Dame, Matt Moore played at Oregon State and Tony Pike played at Cincinnati. Tony Pike led the Bearcats to an undefeated regular season. Armanti Edwards is a two time Walter Payton winner. In 2007 he met Joe Flacco in the FCS National Championship. They all threw for pleasing amounts of yardage in their college careers.
The Panthers also have another player who played QB for Appalachian State. This is, of course, wide receiver Armanti Edwards. He’s a dual-threat passer who has a decent arm and the ability to make a play inside and outside of the pocket. He played in what the panthers called the mountaineer package.
To me Tony Pike seems to be the only QB who hasn’t proved he can be a starter.
If Rivera decides he doesn’t like any of these guys, then he can look into the draft. If I were a coach I would rather have an experienced veteran even if he’s only got one more year of experience than a rookie with limited composure.
If you were Ron Rivera would you look at last year’s game film to decide the starter, or would you start from scratch?
As a new coach, he should start from scratch because last year was obviously a down year. However, to help make his decision easier, he should look at the winning game film. The two quarterbacks that played the majority of the games were Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen. In the wins they both played well. In Moore’s win over the 49ers, he threw for 308 yards and 2 TD. While in Clausen’s win, he threw 141 yards and a score.
Before this horrid season, Moore looked like the face of the franchise. He had come in and shown hints that he might have the potential to beat out struggling Jake Delhomme for the starting job. Moore was putting up great stats that year. As a Panthers fan, I was going crazy when Moore would drive the team down the field with ease. I remember the Panthers vs. the Vikings, I was thinking, how are you going to stop Brett Favre? Then Moore threw for 299 yards and 3 Td in our upset victory.
Hopefully Ron won’t pull a Mike Shanahan and bench players, even if they have talent.
We could always take back Brian St. Pierre? J
Who do you think is worthy of being the starting quarterback? Should we sign a free agent or promote from within?
What do you think?
