"If you ask Jets' CB Darrelle Revis, there is no one who is harder to cover one-on-one than Steve Smith. That has to mean something coming from last year's runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year."

scratch Lewis off
He wasn’t the opening day starter…

Lewis never started
If I remember correctly, he was signed to be the starter in 2001, but Weinke beat him out.
right
I think he did play a game or two in relief, but was just terrible.

He wasn't terrible during the regular season...
Considering the line we had at the time, he was about what you’d expect from a backup. 50% completion rate in a few relief appearances, seven sacks (again, normal for that era) and one interception.
So not terrible, but certain no reason to hand the keys over to the guy. He had been signed as “The QB Of The Future” from Denver where he was behind some guy there (Elway? Something like that…). He came here and was behind Beuerlein for two middling seasons before Seifert decided to go younger. Then came the drafting of Weinke, the cutting of Beuerlein and the promotion of Lewis. Lewis performed terribly during camp and preseason, was cut before the first game and never got a regular season start with the Panthers. And that marked the end of his playing career. Now he’s the coach at Louisville who turned us on to Trent Guy.

Hmmm...well...
…we’ve had three Pro Bowlers. Kerry Collins made it after the 1996 run at the Superbowl. Steve Beuerlein made it the year he threw for over 4,000 yards. In fact, he holds the distinction of being the oldest QB to ever make a Pro Bowl and he got pounded behind a terrible O-line in his years with the Panthers. And lastly, Jake Delhomme made the Pro Bowl in 2005.

Aw, man! I was SURE I remembered all the starters...
but then you brought up Collins’s broken jaw, and I think you’re absolutely correct.
I hate being wrong! Nice job on that, though. Good memory.
