They don't have a quarterback. When you don't have a quarterback in the NFL, you're not going to be a really good football team.

From the same story, Peter King picks his 'breakout player'
Matt Moore, Panthers: In the five games as a starter last year, he beat the Vikings and Giants, among others, and convinced John Fox — and me — that he was the real thing.

Hmmm.... who should I believe more, Peter King, or Jerome Bettis?

I think I’ll go with King. When he says anything positive about the Panthers, it must be true.

I'd go with neither...

Bettis doesn’t know what he’s talking about. As an NFL commentator, he’s around because of his name recognition and past performances on the field, not his astute insights into the inner workings and possible futures of NFL franchises.

Meanwhile, Peter King writes stuff to stay relevant. Anything he can trot out as “interesting” or “surprising” or even “quaint” to his readership keeps him in a steady job and maintains his supposed reputation as being the “go-to guy” for insights into the game. But more often than not, he’s wrong on stuff. Plenty wrong on stuff.

So, will Matt Moore be the best and brightest “breakout” player? Probably not. So, will he crash and burn and take the Panthers into the cellar and become the laughing stock of the NFL. I highly doubt it. More likely, he’ll be in the middle somewhere. And, the performances (or non-performances) of plenty of other guys on the roster will have just as large an impact on how this teams does this year.

But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil

Coming from a former runningback

This ‘analysis’ is deplorable, lazy, and disappointing.

There’s a reason Jerome Bettis has bounced around as an analyst after his football career. It’s because he’s not very good.

For the record, I’d say this even if I didn’t have a pony in this race.

Jerome Bettis:
I don’t see Carolina getting any better any time soon. When you don’t have the quarterback position sewn up, it presents problems. They’ve got to develop trust in Matt Moore, a guy I’m not sure is capable. If Moore doesn’t work out, the offense falls in the hands of a rookie, which is usually a sign of bad things to come. Even if that rookie is from Notre Dame.

Fun fact

Bettis was a rookie in 1993 for the LA Rams where he accounted for 1,673 yards of total offense which was 52% of the Rams total offense that year.

I guess if “the offense falls in the hands of a rookie, which is usually a sign of bad things to come.” only applies when you’re not the bus.

by James Dator on Sep 7, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, that is incredibly stupid on so many levels.

I don’t see Carolina getting any better any time soon. When you don’t have the quarterback position sewn up, it presents problems.

First we run into the problem of his definition of “Anytime soon.” Is that just this season, or the forseeable future? Because if it’s the latter, it’s really dumb. We drafted Clausen not only for the future, but also in case Matt doesn’t work out. This seems like sewing up the position to me.

They’ve got to develop trust in Matt Moore, a guy I’m not sure is capable.

So according to Jerome, we should establish trust in Matt, even though he doesn’t think he’s capable? So we’re damned if we do, damned if we don’t according to Jerome. Brilliant.

If Moore doesn’t work out, the offense falls in the hands of a rookie, which is usually a sign of bad things to come.

Sometimes it can be, yes. Other times, like say with Jerome’s former QB Big Ben, it does work out. That’s in addition to what James posted.

God, this guy is stupid. I reiterate that there’s a reason nobody keeps him for very long.

Emmitt Smith blows as an analyst too.

Maybe the networks should take that into consideration when they get these former players to do analysis.

John Fox, Panthers: I don’t care for Fox’s quarterback situation. Instead of going for a veteran to be a backup, they went for a rookie. I like Clausen, but you’ve got to have somebody there in case Moore isn’t the guy at your most important position.

so, having a rookie as the backup QB is the reason Fox won’t be here next year?

I don’t care for his analysis, but Moore only played in 5 games and he looked amazing doing it. But it was only 5 games. I hope it translates come this weekend, but I’m cautiously optimistic at best and someone pessimistic at worst.

I do, however, think the Bettis is talking out of his ass.

the problem with the panthers is our qb situation. i mean, if we had a proven veteran like mark sanchez, jay cutler, or matt stafford (did anyone else throw over 20 interceptions last year) we’d be good to go.

i just want his personal e-mail address so we can all send his quotes back to him at the end of the year. kerry byrne (i have no idea who that is) predicted we’ll get to the NFC championship game on the same article.

from don banks

Predicted record: 7-9.

The Panthers are a team forced to play in a state of flux this season, what with nine starters from last year’s 8-8 club either released or not re-signed, and head coach John Fox in the unusual situation of working in the final season of his contract. There’s some talent on defense and in the running game, but Carolina doesn’t have enough depth or impact players to put together anything approaching a playoff run in 2010.

I can deal with a 7-9 prediction

That’s more in the norm of this team. Foxy has never lost more than 9 games in a season since he’s been here – I don’t expect that to happen now.

Any prediction from 7-9 all the way to 11-5 are very realistic, IMO. But to say we’re going to be “the worst team in the league” is absurd.

Decent to Pretty Good sounds about right

There will be a few games where a lucky bounce, a blown tackle, or a missed assignment will make the difference. Depending on how those turn out will be the difference, IMO.

I could see...

the team struggle early on, due to the amount of inexperience on the team (ie. rookie mistakes). Between 7-9 and 11-5 is a possibility (my prediction is 9-7).

Our defense is the best in the league in the preseason but everyone wants to talk about our offense. I want to honestly believe we were working on areas on the passing game in the pre-season and we are saving the good stuff for this Sunday, plus Smitty and J. Stew are back into the fold. Should be an interesting game for sure. I could care less what a old worn out Pittsburgh Steeler says and Bradshaw is no better what is it with former Steelers bashing our team this year, LOL ? Instead, I’ll just make a lazy generalization that contradicts how this $40k ring got on my finger.”
