Ask a Giants fan

Hey Carolina fans. Football's finally starting again. Some of your guys came over to BBV so I thought I'd return the favor.

I still remember last years monstrosity. Had to listen to it on the radio... Which didn't make it any better. It's a new season, but I still feel scared of your team for some reason. Should I be?

Go ahead and ask away. Only... six days left until kickoff.

Are NY fans satisfied with what the Giants have done to fix what happened to the defense last year?

Also, what’s the consensus on Brandon Jacobs after his down season last year?

by SlayerGhaleon on Sep 6, 2010 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

Sort of

Obviously we’ll never know until the game.

But Antrel Rolle is >>>>> CC Brown.
Michael Johnson is serviceable with a good safety opposite him, now he’s the back up’s back up.
If KP isn’t ready, Deon Grant hasn’t missed a start in a few seasons and once again is >>>>>> CC Brown.
Sheridan was way over his head, and the thing about Fewell is that he had the Buffalo Bills still competing at the end of the year. The problem we had was Sheridan couldn’t motivate the troops and that’s Fewell’s specialty.

Jacobs… We don’t really know. Hopefully its because he was injured. But it may just be he’s broken down. I’m hoping its the former.

fewell

i didn’t know he came over from the bills. that may be a good thing since we played the bills last year. he saw first hand how our running game works, but our passing game may surprise a lot of people (including us panther fans). the key is going to be our d-line, though. the last time you guys beat us (2008, you may remember that year) derrick ward went for over 200 yards.

I think the Giants have done more than enough...

to correct the problems that we had last year defensively.Antrell Rolley has played extremely well this preseason and i only expect more good things from him in the regular season. CC “Can’t Cover” Brown is history (good riddance). Phillips is healthy and has play well during the preseason. Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Boley, and even Bulluck have all given Giants fans reason to smile.

Brandon is still a Giant favorite but is kinda in the doghouse. Ahmad is expected to be our starting RB and most NYG fans are happy with that seeing how Brandon’s performance level appears to have dropped. We expect him to be back to form though and know he will produce.

I am actually very curious to see what our opposition thinks about Matt Moore..

You guys sweating over our passing game? I was also curious about your locker room situation, given what I’m hearing about Jacobs having problems with losing the starting spot to Bradshaw. Think that will impact your team in the long-term?

by The Kackalack Kid on Sep 6, 2010 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Moore...

Not sweating, but I remember last year. Hopefully we’re a lot better back there, but I’m always cautious.

The stuff about Jacobs is slightly over played, but the whole training camp he was without the usual emotions he has. I love big boy, but Bradshaw has outplayed him.

i'd say injuries

Big Boy is oft injured. to blame it on age is still a little premature to me, he’s only 28, which in RB age gives him at least 2 more productive seasons. although he runs hard, he’s only played 3 full seasons as a starter, so the tread wasn’t used up early in his career.

IMO, while Bradshaw got all the accolades in preseason, Jacobs overall ran better than him. Now true, he only rushed in 2 of the preseason games, and the first was atrocious(4 carries, 2 yards), but lets remember AB that game ran for only 1 yard in 2 carries. so that one was cancelled out. Big Boy had a 39 yard run in game 3, but also had 2 big runs called back due to penalties this preseason. so, the rumors of his demise, are vastly overstated.

at least IMHO.

Again, Thats just based on what I have seen of the Panthers games this preseason. Panthers have always given NY competitive games and John Fox knows how to use the talent that he has effectively. Tuck

because he’ll be healthy this year. A big reason for the suckitude last year was tuck wasn’t playing with one arm. Him healthy means the difference in the defense
Nicks is entering his second year. If him, Smith12, and Manningham can bring it all together, it’s not much of a stretch to say we’ll have top 5 receivers.

antrell rolle

he has looked fantastic during the preseason, with 2 picks, alot of in the box tackles on the run, and a good punishing hit on a receiver(that was called a penalty by a light in the pants ref). he got outplayed by Heap, to be fair, but i thought part of it was just due to Heap’s athletic ability, and not Rolles misplay. i just think he will be an x-factor in the secondary.

Also our new pickup, Reynaud from Minn. with absolutely nothing going on in the return game, from what i’ve seen on youtube, this kid is 10X better than anyone we have.

The olden Steve Smith does things no other receiver in league history can do.

It’s no comparison. If Carolina’s Smith had played with a Hall of Fame quarterback, he’d have broken every record Jerry Rice ever set. His athleticism is unparalleled in all of professional sports. If you think otherwise, just watch a highlight reel.

i know what your SS can do

but that’s a little of an overstatement. Jerry Rice didn’t just break records, he shattered them. one of the freak of natures in sports today, Randy Moss, will have a hard time breaking his records, if he does.

i’ve always compared SS to iverson. a vastly undersized guy that plays way bigger than there size. for AI to be 5’11" 185 lbs and drop 30 a year, is the same to me as SS being what 5’8"? and having 1400+ receiving yards. a mini beast, like the tazmanian devil.

IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!

by wilddre22 on Sep 8, 2010 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I've seen Steve Smith make plays I've never seen any other receiver attempt.

He would only be Iverson if Iverson could jump from the 3-point line to make a dunk, ‘cause he’d have to be better than the best, which was Jordan. Rice has never made some of the plays Smith has. I’ve seen him break out of a gang tackle of five defenders. I’ve seen him lay a 270 pound defensive lineman on his butt with a block. I’ve seen him jet past a defender along the sideline for a touchdown with only half of one foot inbounds. Late last year, a defender popped him so hard it broke his arm and he still ran in for a touchdown.

He’s made leaping grab after leaping grab downfield over defenders way taller than him, sometimes over two or three defenders at a time. He also changes direction at full speed so fluidly. I once saw him stop on a dime at full speed so the defender coming at him from a perpendicular pursuit angle just slid across his path right in front of him, and he walked in for a touchdown. Feel free to commence calling me a homer, or ignorant, or whatever you want, but I honestly believe Carolina’s Smith is the best receiver of all-time as far as pure talent is concerned.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 8, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

i won't call you ignorant

i will, however, call you a homer. which is fine, you have good reason to. SS is spectacular. i’ve always thought that. my comparison to AI is a compliment, because i’ll always say that what he did among all the trees in the NBA is amazing, just like what SS does running over guys twice his size is amazing. i’d have to say MJD out in Jacksonville falls into that category too.

i will however disagree with you on him being better than Rice. maybe physically, he’s broken some amazing runs off a lot of missed and broken tackles. but overall talent? no way. you’d have to have some physical ability to 11 seasons of 1200+ yards(including 1 of over 1800 yards!), and 9 seasons of 10+ TD(including 22 in one year). i’m sure Rice broke a few tackles and made some spectacular catches along the way(i know from visual proof, not just quoting stats)

I even went as far as taking Rice’s first 8 seasons, and comparing them to SS first 9(he had one year where he played one game the whole season so i kept that in this comparison) and here’s how the numbers stack up:

Jerry Rice(1st 8 seasons)
Rec: 610
Rec yds: 10273
Rec TDs: 89

Steve Smith(1st 9 seasons)
Rec: 574
Rec yds: 8330
Rec TDs: 50

I think that’s the most even comparison to be made. I know your argument is Rice had a HOF QB passing to him, i’d argue that alot of the reason he is a HOFer is because of who was receiving those passes.

And keep in mind, this is coming from a Giant fan who grew up in the 80’s, when the Giants/Niners rivalry was one of the biggest at the time. So for me to say it, well, that just shows how much respect that man has garnered.

You do however, make good points S82B, and you do have a true talent out there wearing 89.

IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!

by wilddre22 on Sep 8, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

That's a well-thought out examination...

…but I would also place one caveat on your comparison between Steve Smith and Jerry Rice in their first 8/9 seasons. Rice played in a West Coast offense, which piles up gobs of short passing yards (which admittedly Rice often turned into big gains now and then). But the 49ers didn’t favor the run as much as the Panthers have during Steve’s playing years. The Panthers simply haven’t thrown the ball as frequently as the Bill Walsh Niners’ teams did during Rice’s early years. Instead, we’ve had a run-first philosophy going for a long time in Carolina. And, even then, Steve has piled up impressive numbers in that timespan. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s greater than Jerry Rice. But, in some ways, I do think they’re closer than a lot of people realize. And, pound-for-pound, there’s more fury in Steve Smith as a superstar WR in the NFL than any other.

But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil

the panthers steve smith is much better, and i think it’s not even close. but if we go down the list, then it gets tricky… Hakeem Nicks vs. Dwayne Jarrett, Mario Manningham vs. Brandon LaFell, Kevin Boss vs. I dunno (you pick, Rosario, King or Barnidge), or your rookie (Cruz) vs our other rookie (Edwards). I wouldn't necessarily say "following."

I have been wanting Coughlin to use this strategy for some time. At times he has done this and it worked nicely. Then he stopped and went back to starting Jacobs in the beginning of the game and Ahmad at the end and opposing teams began to adjust.

Although the Saints use the technique of using the RB to fit the situation, they aren’t the only ones. I am sure that other teams do this as well. Coughlin using the Saints as an example was purely arbitrary..

And by scares you – I mean as in who can make the biggest impact on the outcome of the game. Please try and avoid the obvious answer of Steve Smith, because we already know that he scares everyone except Chuck Norris (because Chuck Norris fears no one).

i'm going to go with Jonathan Stewart

i’m going to go out on a limb and say he’s actually the better of the two backs, and we haven’t had a great run D since about ‘08. so yeah, it’d be the wonder twins back there, but moreso J-Stew coming off the bench.

Care-free football?

If I went to work knowing I was fighting for a job, I don’t think I’d be very care-free.

My own prediction would be somewhere around 21-24 points for the Panthers. I haven’t really given it much thought yet but I expect at least 14 points from Williams/Stewart. What will happen through the air is a mystery.

I don’t really know what to predict for your side. It’s a new year and I’d be lying if I said I knew what sort of changes you guys made during the offseason.

But who is the pressure really on after last year's debacle in closing the old stadium???

I would worry more about the revenge factor in this game if it were in Charlotte, but the Giants Home crowd is gonna put a load of pressure on Eli and the G-Men to atone for last year’s embarrassment, and if the Giants hold true to form they will dissapoint their Home crowd. Over the last 3 seasons the Giants are a stellar 20-8 on the road while going a respectable but more modest 14-11 at home. The year they won the SuperBowl they did it as a wildcard seed winning all 4 playoff games on the road. The next season, as the #1 NFC seed, they were eliminated from the playoffs at home by the lowest seed in their first playoff game. Last season they were eliminated from playoff contention at home in what was suppossed to be a final great moment in the hallowed Old Meadowlands Stadium. The Giants under Coughlin are a great road team but they seem to often struggle under the pressure of their home crowd. I hope it holds true to form on Sunday.

Question for the Giants fans

Would you recommend starting Brandon Jacobs in your fantasy league in week 1?

Right now my only other options would be Thomas Jones (KC), Julius Jones (SEA), Jabbar Gaffney (DEN) Jerricho Cotchery (NYJ) and Armanti Edwards (CAR).

The 2 Jones are potentially # 3 backs on their depth charts, Edwards and Cotchery are #3 WRs at best.

How many carries do y’all expect Jacobs to actually get?

Right now i’m leaning towards starting him if only to hedge my bets: If (and i stress IF) Jacobs runs all over the Panthers, my fantasy team will benefit.

by dudemanhey on Sep 7, 2010 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

With Santonio Holmes out the first 4 weeks

Gaffney is the #1 receiver on a team with their top RB coming off 6 weeks with no practice.
Cotchery is the main possession receiver and will get alot more targets than Braylon Edwards.
TJ is not even close to being demoted to 3rd back in KC, and will most likely get all the red zone work. He’s been a red zone monster for years.
Jacobs may get the red zone work for NYG, but you have to ask, how many times will they get there this week.

Just my opinion, but I’d go with Gaffney out of that group.

I have to start 2 of those 6 players on that list. Plus, i just picked up Josh Cribbs (dropped Sidney Rice) and could start him too.

After doing some research, I’m leaning towards Thomas Jones (instead of Jacobs) and Jabaar Gaffney.

Side note: I am for sure starting Jonathan Stewart at # 1 RB and the Panthers Defense.

anyway, i’d go either TJ, or B.Jake. he’s not getting totally phased out of our offense, he’s just not starting. i still expect him to get the goal line carries, so depending on your scoring, that may be worth more than if someone else has 100 yards. either way, good luck!

Difficult to guage a player's output potential preseason when you don't know what role they'll play with their team.

Thomas Jones and Jacobs both have been significant contributors over the last several seasons, and either of them could easily score two TD’s next weekend. However, both will be competing with other RBs for touches.

Multiple RBs is the norm in the NFL these days. Even my #1 RB Jonathan Stewart will be sharing rushes with Williams, and maybe Sutton and Goodson.

Julius Jones did not get cut but he is behind Forsett and Leon Washington on the SEA depth chart.

RB#2 & RB/WR have to be filled my 2 of the guys i listed, so i could start T Jones & Jacobs in stead of a WR. Hopefully I will know more about how their teams plan on using them after week 1.

by dudemanhey on Sep 8, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't start Jacobs

He’s looking at probably 10-12 carries. Plus, they’re fazing him out of their goal line pkgs. Bradshaw has just looked better in short yardage. I wouldn’t go with Edwards, trust me, the ravens are gonna shut Sanchez down. He’ll be dumping it to Keller and Tomlinson all day. I’d say Thomas Jones or Cotchery (he’s also a good outlet for Sanchez).

I've got a few questions for you guys

i like the giants alot. rather you guys have alot of players rather that i like. your team has alot of talent. in fact i was expecting and hoping that kenny phillips would be drafted by the panthers the year he came out but we settled J stew and Otah :)

With Victor Cruz looking like a monster in the preseason. what do you think he will do in the regualar season behind an already young and talented receiving corp?

Ramdez Barden was a i was looking forward to when he was drafted. not many receivers are 6’6’’ in the nfl. however, this year i thought for sure he was going to be cut but some how hung on. do you consider him a bust and what do you expect from him this year?

How did two players go from studs to backups? im talking of course of Osi and Jacobs. those two were unbeleivable a couple of years ago and now they’re having probems regaining their starting roles.

My friend is a NC state fan and is upset that Andre Brown didnt make the team (although happy he did make a team). How did you let a guy like him go in play of the mediocre D. ware?

by pantherpride on Sep 7, 2010 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

it's going to be hard for Victor Cruz to get snaps at WR this season barring injuries to

our starters…he and Duke Calhoun are the 5th and 6th receivers that we carry respectively. They will spend more time in Specials.

Barden is definitely not a bust. It’s just too early to tell..on avg. it takes 3 years for WRs to get acclimated with the NFL – of course there are a handful of exceptions. But Barden coming from PolyTech has to adjust to a high level of competition, not to mention other differences in the NFL. He is raw in the pro-style offense and it’s only his 2nd year with very limited touches end of last season. Giants did take him on as a project, but he’s been progressing nicely. Would have loved to see him get more catches in the preseason but he was sidelined with a minor injury.

Quick answer on Osi and Jacobs: injuries… Osi last year was coming back from knee surgery and the more accurate timeframe of recovery is actually this year – hence, last year he wasn’t completely there. Although, you have to factor in just the mess that was our DC last year.

Andre Brown: Many BBVers were upset over the loss of Andre Brown (myself included) but it was a calculated risk on the Giants’ part. They wanted to sneak him onto the practice squad mostly b/c he got a turf-toe injury prior to the New England game and would be out for a couple of weeks. DWare to his credit played a good game 15 carries 60 yards against New England. I’m not the biggest fan of him, but he will be very serviceable if he stays healthy.

Cruz

That’s another case of “dunno”.
Barden has been hurt so he may be as high as fourth on the WR depth chart. He’ll get all the looks associated with that. So a td or two, maybe a couple hundred yards?
Barden… I don’t think he’s a bust yet. The situation changed a lot from when we drafted him to the present. Our top 3 is entrenched (Smith, Nicks, Manningham) unless one gets injured (God forbid). I don’t expect a whole lot though.
Osi may still start. It takes two years until a player fully comes back from the injury he had. I’m expecting a rebound year from the whole Dline.
Jacobs may have just reached the end. Or maybe injuries. I’m hoping the latter but we won’t know until they play the game.
Most of us are a little upset. But the problem is no one has ever returned from a ruptured achilles in pro football. He also had turf toe, and one of our posters thinks that the team is just sick of injured people.

This year we are honestly a lot like you guys were in your Super Bowl run at DE. We have 4 guys who can all put a lot of pressure on the QB, and who we can rotate to keep fresh at will without expecting any dropoff in production.

I dare say that the pass rush is going to be our strongest area this season, if the preseason gave us even a decent look.

the difference

i’m not sure the defense was just watching pep, but sometimes, there wasn’t much to see. this season, i expect Beason to completely dominate. the giants have NO game film of him playing outside LB. Connor is a tackling machine, and I expect that if bradshaw goes up the middle a couple times, connor will destroy him, and giants fans will be calling for jacobs.

i will never forget the 2008 game when you guys had a first and goal and jacobs got the ball. there was a big hole with one guy standing in his way…nate salley. i think that was salley’s last game as a panther. you can guess who won that battle at the goal line.

I think Steve Smith (Carolina's Steve Smith) Owns This Game

Why? I recently read an article about him being un-impressed with the young receiving core in the preseason. In the article he said something about how he hears them talking and then see’s them play. He says he felt as if they didn’t give him the respect he deserved since he wasn’t on the field.

Now, most of you know how Steve Smith operates. Something in my gut tells me Steve Smith goes out with a “this is how it’s done” attitude in this game. In addition he has his vendetta against the Giants for his broken arm last year.

Oh I'm sorry

I guess I forgot we’re apart of two different fan bases. We’re going to read into something like this differently.

But let me ask you this, how can somebody call out a guy who has been to 4 pro bowls, could have broken 1000 yards if he didnt break his arm (with a pretty crappy QB situation) as the Steve Smith who didnt go to the probowl. Yes Smith called him out first but he called him out for a hit that was illegal enough to get him fined, Johnson is calling out Smith for not making it to the Pro bowl after he just made it the year before… Dang, their isnt much talent in the NFL if you have to get into the pro bowl two years in a row to be considered good but of course you can just be on Michael Johnson’s team. The second your on his team you automatically become a beast at least in his eyes.

Nothing against your Steve Smith, he had a great year and deserved Pro Bowl recognition but he has only made it once. We will see if he can continue his success but I see no reason as to why he couldnt.
