Why this 2010 Panthers team, will win more than 10 games

It's the Chemistry Stupid!..Ok, I remember then END of the 2009 season, like it was just last year :) and what I remember was an offensive line that controlled the line of scrimmage,a running game that truly appeared unstoppable,a three headed monster at TE that always came through when called on,a QB who didn't make mistakes, and oh yeah one of the best receivers to ever suit up...a team that would man handle the likes of  the Minnesota Vikings and NY Giants, teams who needed and had to win...teams the Panthers essentially embarrassed, these weren't close games,by all measures, any honest assessment would see them as what they were, lopsided blowouts.

This offense was special,if only for the last several games.Matt Moore has in his long and illustrious career ,never let this team down...ok 6 weeks, but the fact that he had zero BAD games should tell us either, hes gonna be real good or he is surrounded by a real good team(maybe both)He has a running game that is second to none...NONE,an offensive line with leadership, talent, youth and oh yeah,Chemistry...If you are one of those fans who have been duped into thinking this offense will be average at best, then you may also be one of those fans who think Foxy or Hurney are the problem...just a thought but, some fans might want to be a little less dogmatic (John Fox is a horrible coach...LMAO,or heres one...I can't believe this dang draft,we'll be lucky to win 5 games...WTF,ok 1 more,"Tony Pike SUCKS ,he's horrible Fox is an idiot...I would like someone to find the video to defend that ridiculous statement...We Panther Fans are about to be treated to a very special decade of football,so you weak at heart and all you haters and crybabbies, NFL sunday ticket will help you to return to your Cowgirls or pinkskins or nascar...

Now those of you who have chosen to stay, wise decision!!!Our defense...sweet.If we can stay healthy and I know that's  tough,we will be a top 5 defense right out of the gate,we will always be the sports trivia answer to "What team not only closed Giants/Jets stadium in brutal fashion, but had the distinction of opening it in like manner?"...Yeah Baby, this defense by week 8 will, make last years 8th ranked defense look old and slow..So when you start watching peppermint patties highlights from Chicago keep in mind the trade was a great one for us,they got part-time help,we got CHEMISTRY! Panthers will rule! at least 11-5 and thats ok, for the first year of our New Dynasty!....To Win Superbowls you need a few ingredients,Good Coaching(check)Talent(check)more talent(check)....but no team gets rings without the main ingredient,...........CHEMISTY, thank you peppermint pattie, now break a leg.

That had a nice flow to it, Panther Eddie...

…the creative use of ellipses made it actually feel as if there were periods, and sentences, and all. ;)

I agree with all you believe to be true. I haven’t used the key word Chemistry, but like you, I’ve thought that the youth and hunger, and the bonding through TC, will result in a far more dynamic team effort than ‘experts’ visualize.

The Giants game will show us whether we’re right, or not.

Game 1 huge,I always get a little carried away, but truly and particularly fired up this year.

If we don’t do anything else this year we should be able to sneak up early on some teams and before they know what hit them have a lead this defense can hold on to,although not having to rebound from a week 1 loss with a young team would be sweet, I could see this team starting slow and making young mistakes. But in the end…I expect our Panthers to Rule.

I'm not pinning too much on this first game

We embarrassed the Giants to close out Giants Stadium…they will be very motivated to prevent the same on the opening of their new. Of course a victory will make it sweeter but…given our offense is rusty we better hope the defense creates some turnovers because I see a lot of 3 and outs in that game from both offenses

Tony Pike cant throw the Football...

How do you almost get 2 guys killed in one Game? I will tell you. you throw a snail football. Name me a QB that throws a slower football than Pike? you cant. and this cant be fixed. If it could then Pennington would have fixed it at some point in his career. If you could magically fix this problem Clausen would have the strongest arm ever. Because he is just that dedicated to being the best QB that has ever lived. i dont know if he ever will be. But I hope so.

Aside from that. I agree with the rest of it.

Could be a good West Coast style prospect

I can’t see him flourishing in our current system with the emphasis on deep balls. Still, you never know. The guy’s a rookie and has time to develop. Let’s see what he does with a year in an NFL conditioning program, some time to get used to our system, and NFL game speed.

Have to assume the coaches have a good reason.

If Pike is as useless as you say and this isn’t fixable, you must come to the conclusion that we have idiots making this decision.I’m not ready to do that,I’ve seen very good decision making(with a few exceptions)but we have a crowd of talent that in my opinion dosent happen by accident, management brought in this talent and certainly has done a good job in doing so.It may turn out that you were correct, but the coaches are aware that we are having to make some tough decisions now(with respect to cuts for the 53 man roster) and its hard for me to believe it’s as cut and dry as you see it…although you may be right

Keeping him might have had something to dp with $.

I think I read somewhere that if a team cuts a draft choice, they have to pay 85% of his would-be salary into a rookie pool, to be distributed among the rookies. Or did I dream that?

by bigdavis on Sep 6, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I read that as well.

I think on either Gantt or some other reporters’ tweets.

by patosan on Sep 8, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

in fact,I too think we should have cut Pike and Cantwell, using Edwards as the emergency, giving us another couple roster spots.I would guess they are preparing for the possibility Clausen becomes number 1 and Moore becomes disgruntled.

by Panther Eddie on Sep 6, 2010 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

i think they are getting ready for Moore to leave after the season.

And I think we could find a better option than Pike. Anywhere. They like that Pike showed that he could feel the rush and get rid of the ball. I understand this. I just do not want a reciever to get injured because of the floaters that come out of his hand.

The roster spot that he is taking up is a big problem for me too. We could really use another guy on the OL, CB, or maybe a WR. We could make better use of the spot for sure.

A ship can’t have two captains and a team can only have one starting QB. Either Moore or Clausen will be gone and we’ll need a backup.

by patosan on Sep 8, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that confident going in

Things to be concerned about for Week 1:

1. Offensive line has severe issues with penalties and our best lineman is often the guilty party. Penalties are not the sign of an OL with chemistry.

2. Defense has great potential but we are not going to enjoy playing big backs this season.

3. The offensive play-calling is guaranteed to frustrate.

4. We can hope that Special Teams will not frustrate. But, there are no such guarantees.

5. If Smitty is blanketed, can we count on someone to step-up and take advantage? Admit it – we don’t know for sure yet.

I like the potential that this very young team has but we may have to be patient. I think we have the potential to beat the Giants in their house again but for the reasons above and the one that Jaxon pointed out I don’t feel good about the game against the Giants.

I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Even the biggest of running backs are going to have a hell of a time trying to run over 3 or 4 guys at once.

I think our speed and ability to swarm the ball will limit these big backs from too much production.

Interesting comments from Andre Neblett in today's Observer:

“Neblett arrived at Temple’s north Philadelphia campus hoping to play linebacker, but started nine games at defensive tackle as a freshman and has been in a three-point stance ever since.

"I didn’t really know much about the position. I just thought you just line up and try to knock the guy as far back as you can," Neblett said. "Over the years, I learned there’s a lot more things that go along with D-line. Being able to have good footwork, good hands, being able to get in that stance and know exactly what you’re going to do, and read blocks, and things like that."

Small even by MAC standards, Neblett believes his sound fundamentals help him overcome his size limitations.

"I’ve learned that it’s about preparing and using your technique and applying those things on the field," he said. "It’s hard to go out and shoot your hands every play and go through your technique the exact same way you did it the last play in order to make plays. Not a lot of guys can do that. Fortunately, I’m one of the guys that can."

Hey

I am not saying that playing on D-line is all about the size. But this is a tried and tested method of attacking smaller defenses. Our OL has done it so often in the past – we lean on the defense and tire them out and reap the benefits late in the game.

Now, if our backups are good enough we can hopefully get by using the them in spells. Let’s see.

by pieterzen on Sep 7, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully rotations will help

We have a pretty consistent level of talent on our D-line. Hopefully rotating those guys constantly will help blunt the fatigue factor somewhat.

by patosan on Sep 8, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's why we won't...

And first of all, I’d like to say, I’m not a hater, nor a crybaby. I LOVE John Fox and hope he gets a contract renewal at the end of this year. Also, I think we great draft, and I am personally excited about Tony Pike’s future. So, don’t put me in that group, cause I’m not one of ’em. Actually, I am very optimistic about this season….

Rationally, however, I think 10 wins is going to be darn hard to acheive with this offense. It’s not that the running game isn’t great, nor that Smitty isn’t fantastic, or that our 3 TEs aren’t altogether a solid group. However, we have many uprovens at significant positions. Although Matt Moore did great at the conclusion of last season, we really don’t know how he’ll do in a full season. And besides Smitty, we don’t have ANYONE stepping up to the plate. And I think that makes us one dimensional in a lot of ways. The point is that a couple of significant guys on offense are really going to have to step up for us to win that many games. And based upon our preseason offensive performance, our offensive chemistry ain’t looking too good. Furthermore, you are only as good as your competition, and our competition has been beefing up big time, especially in the NFC south….

Heck, I’d LOVE it if we won 10 or more games. But rationally, I would bet against it. Here’s to hoping you are right, and hoping that some guys can step up come next Sunday…

My prediction:

The team will stink, there will be some big name free agents not resigned after this year, and next year they’ll stink.

People keep talking about how Carolina will be so much better off than any other team ‘cause of the lowered salary cap, but I feel strongly that something will be in the new agreement that will allow for other teams to get around it without releasing half their roster. They’re not just going to throw most of the teams under the bus and say, “Find your own way to get under the new cap.”

I also do not get all the dynasty talk. I do not believe all the young talent Carolina has will be with the team after this year. Even if most of the top young guys come back, a lot of the depth will likely take a huge hit. Jamar Williams, James Anderson, Charles Johnson, and several other guys like that only have 1 year deals. They will be filling needs left and right in the next draft and free agency just like always.

As for this year, I’m not sold on Matt Moore after his preseason performances, neither am I sold on the depth at offensive line. There were a lot of offensive line injuries last year. In fact, one guy is currently injured right now, and the depth is very shallow. I foresee Jeff King stepping in as an emergency tackle in some game this year. I just don’t see where the optimism is coming from after those preseason games.

Last CBA when the cap was originally installed

teams had to dump players that were to costly because of their contract, if my memory serves me correctly. I don’t doubt they would have to do it again. Teams that remember that will be in better shape than teams that dont

My reply was to SilverBlade and his assessment that we will stink this year and next.

I’d trade with no one because I expect a dominant ground game to combine with an adequate passing attack to create a low turn-over offense and a speedy, opportunistic defense to lead us to the play-offs and beyond.

I'm a fan 'cause I like football and they're the home team.

I’m just being realistic though. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see the optimism if you’re basing the team’s potential on those preseason games. Lots of aspects were good to great, but the most important key area stunk. Plus, there are potential key injury concerns, and depth issues.

You do realize Pre-Season means nothing, right?

And John Fox is notorious for using the most vanilla playbook during the Pre-Season right?

Also, you have to take into account the following:

1.) Smitty played 0 snaps. Stewie played 0 snaps. D-Will played limited snaps.

2.) We threw the football 125 times in 4 games (31.25 per game), and we ran the football 91 times in 4 games (22.75 per game). We were working out our receivers to see who was going to make the roster, not overworking D-Will and risking an injury to him. So our normal offense and game plan were not executed in any of the games. The closest game to our actual game plan was the Titans game, and we won that one.

3.) Indy went 0-4 and San Diego went 1-3 – both of those teams are contenders in the AFC. Oakland and Detroit both went 3-1. Nuff said.

No, not 'nuf said.

I don’t care what Carolina’s record was, or what the playcalling was like. All I know is Matt Moore’s throws were way off target. That has nothing to do with anything except Matt Moore. He may get it together, or he may not. I have no idea, but it seems like I’m the only one possibly considering that he was undrafted, cut from the Dallas team, and buried in Carolina’s depth chart for a reason.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Sep 7, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Did you not watch any games at the end of last season?

When Moore came in and led the team to a 4-1 finish – against teams fighting for home field advantage and a playoff spot (MIN and NYG, respectively)?

Ok, if his throws were “way off target” as you claim (I disagree with that, but to each his own), what makes you think that he’s going to throw like that for 25 times per game, 16 games this season? What about the part where we use Double Trouble to ram it down defenses’ throats, and the part where Smitty will be on the field, and the part where our defense is better than we thought….

I’m not totally basing my feelings on this season on what I saw in the meaningless pre-season. I’m basing it on the roster we have, and the play of the QB down the stretch last year when the games actually meant something.

but I’m not basing the teams potential on those four preseason games…We didnt even see our offense take the field.and the most important part was, can this defense play well enough for us to run the ball down the opponents throat and not rely on an incredible air game we dont have…the answer is yes this defense can keep us in games and this running game can finish off any team who needs us to punt.

by Panther Eddie on Sep 7, 2010 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

There will always be games where the QB has to win it with a late 4th quarter drive.

He also has to be able to convert on 3rd downs, and make the one or two deep passes during the game. Quarterback is the most important position on any team, regardless of the team’s philosophy.

Minny, 4th quarter, Panthers down 6-7, 3rd and 26...

Whoops! What’s this?? TD pass to Smith on 3rd and 26, to seize the lead in the 4th Quarter?

Could it be a precurser to achieving the very overwhelming combination of conditions you yourself described, as being the parameters of defining a good QB?

Hmmm.

by bigdavis on Sep 7, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

What kind of exaggerated example is that?

I don’t think my conditions for a good quarterback were overwhelming in the slightest. Delhomme had lots of 4th quarter comeback drives, and was able to make the one or two deep playaction passes necessary in a run first, vertical passing offense. He was also adequate on third down when he had more than one receiving option.

For goodness sakes ...

… I can’t be apprehensive about any part of the team without someone jumping on me. Yes, Moore was great last year. I don’t think anyone can argue with that. However, just ‘cause a player was good one year doesn’t automatically mean he’ll be good the next year. Player production drops off from one year to the next all the time for seemingly no reason. It happens. I’m not saying it will happen to Moore. Maybe he’s just still shaking off the rust. I don’t know what is wrong with him. All I’m saying is it’s a possibility. To say it’s not a possibility that he will decline significantly, after what we’ve all seen this preseason, is just homerism.

First of all, I think I’ve been as positive overall as the next guy when the entire content of the blog is factored in. I just made a pessimistic opinion be known on this particular article.

For instance, I was the only one defending our players buried in the training camp depth chart when everyone else was saying they were just camp meat. I’ve been defending LaFell, saying those passes weren’t catchable, when everyone else was saying he sucked. I’ve even been saying Jarrett has clearly improved, and I was critical of him prior to the preseason. I could go on.

Secondly, I feel I’ve already made my reasons clear as to why I said what I said. To say I had nothing to base my opinions on is just false. It’s all right there for everyone to read, and I’m not going to repeat myself and get into a 100 comment long debate about it.

The offense we suffered thru in preseason is not what we're going to see now.

They kept it totally vanilla, protected the starters from injury, and used the opportunity to evaluate the WR group, kick returners, and 3rd QB. Receivers were targeted on certain plays just to see how they handled it. Half the time Barnidge was running wide open and the throw went elsewhere. We learned a lot where there were questions before. I knew going into the preseason it was going to be much more of a player evaluation effort than a serious competition. Mission accomplished.
Now we have a new mission… scoring touchdowns. Weapons will not be held back, and points will be scored. I don’t know how good the offense will be, but they won’t be anything like what we’ve seen so far.

Where there’s a will… I want to be in it.

Let me help then with some reasons to be optimistic

All those preseason games did was field the best working,on the field defense, we(carolina fans) have ever seen for three consecutive weeks.I’m not suggesting a total of about 4 quarters of football makes a dynasty, not at all. Here is what I am saying,This defense has the potential to be very special ,and our owners have never let our best players get away(peppermint was a quitter and likely always will be)we have great coaching in my not so humble opinion,(Foxy,Meeks) are some of the best .Richardson is a owner who has put,and kept winning as his priority, surrounding himself with the best in the business. So yes I say this defense will be very good for a long time. Now something tells me you guys/gals probably didnt see our 4 or 5 really good seasons coming before they did either.Glass has probably been 3/4 empty forever and thats ok,but just like in years past you were wrong in your pessimism you are now as well. I know and understand you are all real panthers fans or you wouldnt be here,so instead of overlooking you I’ve decided to cheer you up….I fully understand I may be wrong(I would only say that to fellow Panthers fans)but lets look at what we know and can reasonable expect…We know Jake was not only killing us he was costing us games in the end.Gone.Enter M. Moore, this guy didnt just play 1 or 2 good games for us,he ended the season with a top 3 QB rating and toughest schedule of the 2 above him.We know ,or at least I hope you guys know,we have arguably the best running duo in NFL history not only are they great but they are happy…Chemistry. We know our offensive line was playing lights out when last we saw them in real games that mattered…add in the veteran play of Gross(who was injured) and well that should pass the smell test for an UPGRADE!(holding penalties in preseason games by a pro-bowler in his prime is not a justified reason to doom and gloom…stay calm its gonna be a beautiful thing)by the way all player accounts on Gross tell us he has a great/funny additude, can I get a CHEMISTRY! We know we are returning 3 TE’s that as a group are among if not the best trio currently rostered anywhere in the NFL OK, now some goodies for the pessimists we lost Moose(I loved Moose) ……but we all knew he was outta gas,and if we didnt get better at the number 2 at least now we know it and we didnt loose alot from him.Hoover was great but here too we didnt loose superman for lois lane,Did I mention Stevie Wonder? Bottem line our offense should look alot like that offense that was scoring alot of points againt playoff teams while running the ball down their throats. The Defense looks like some crazy shit on Madden and I for one choose to spend the time excited in knowing I would not trade the Panthers for any team that currently exists….NOTTA So you name the team that you would….Offense Defense, skill positions, coaches ,owner, the whole package and we will beat them on the field,if not today, very soon. Panthers Rule!

Thanks Eddie. Now that I think about it, I don't believe I would trade teams with anybody.

Not even the Saints, whom I am now convinced we will sweep this year. You should give the pre-game locker room talks, man. Seriously, would you like to be my adopted brother? My family only gets excited about Wake Forest and the Braves. But for me, it’s all Panthers.

Where there’s a will… I want to be in it.

If your all about some Panthers,we are brothers!

when I tried to think of who I would trade with, some great organizations came to mind, but then I thought about their coach or their medling owner or their lack of superior RB’s,offensive line, secondary, linebackers,FUTURE, not any team was worthy of a top to bottem trade…no dang way,not even a doubt…I’m bout to go crazy, not sure if I’ll be able to sleep Saturday night….HURRY!

I think the Panthers are one of the most difficult teams to predict

this season. So much turn over, so much youth, but the talent is still there. Matt Moore’s inexperience is the root of a lot of the uncertainty, because just as most fans and some non fans, think he can be a successful quarterback in this league as he was at the end of last season, most everybody else aren’t convinced based a lot on his inexperience, which reflects negatively on the teams perception. Just as many of us probably don’t expect a lot of success from other teams around the league with uncertainty or inexperience at their QB postion. Couple that with an absolutely stagnant offense in preseason, and I can see why many aren’t willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until reason is seen on the field. (although i choose to reserve my judgment on the strength of the offense until they’re playing with “live bullets”, as beast likes to put it)
So with that I’m just ready to see our team take the field this Sunday and see who wins. I am very excited about this team and see the potential for a great season but am still try not to let my homerism get the best of me when I go through our schedule trying to pick out the wins.

But for me, it all boils down to: if Matt plays well, we win games. And I think he can.

Sorry for the rant, its my birthday so needless to say…I’m definitely not drinking.

(for the record I think the panthers can win 9+ games this year)

Happy Birthday JC

Well said my friend, can’t argue with that…at least your not going to be shocked if this team very good and you understand that so much rides on our ability to stay healthy,Moores ability to continue to play well and things to go well in general.Moore,Beason, and Smith need to shine…Good news is all 32 teams have this quandry. BTW my problem with looking at the schedule and picking wins and loses is I can’t see any loses that can be expected without thinking….Hell No,We can beat them too! :)

thanks...if we can get the win this sunday it will go a looong way

for this young team. That would bring us back home playing tampa bay for the second…good stuff.

My favorite part of this whole article...

You calling Peppers “Peppermint Patty” – that is awesome.

I’m right there with ya man – I think we’re gonna see a good football team for years to come because they built it the right way: through the draft and with good coaching, and your favorite word “chemistry”.

I think Tony Pike could have the strongest arm on the team if he wanted to.

They should absolutely keep him around indefinitely.

Ha ha. Trying to start another round of noodle-arm?

We’ve beat that dead-arm to death.

Get thee hence, to the PS, and strengthen that noodle, whilst pedaling sideways, in a pike position.

I'm concerned in four areas all on offense

1. Offensive line depth. Schwartz filled in admirably last year but that was during a time when things were clicking. I’m also concerned I haven’t heard a thing on Otah.
2. A WR not named Smith needs to emerge the sooner the better.
3. This is concerning Moore. It is like finding a lottery ticket that has all the right numbers. Is it real? Difference makers at QB doesn’t come around very often , even less from a UDFA ,and in his limited opportunities Moore has been that…each time he’s been called on.
Remember back to ‘07 we had lost 7 of 8 after a 4-2 start with 3 games remaining. Sitting on a 5-8 record having been destroyed by Jax; facing three playoff bound teams…Seattle, Dallas, and TB in the those three games. Things looked bleak and in comes Matt a UDFA rookie that wasn’t even in our camp. We won 2 of those 3 and should have beat Dallas if not for several BS calls. We all know what shape the team was in last year when Matt again came in. So its more a case of finding a gold bar where you didn’t think was one at than lack of faith in Matt. I’m more concerned if Moore has a slow start will he keep the confidence of the fans or will the calls go out for Clausen. If Clausen starts anytime this season we’re done. That can derail any chance of having a winning season. Moore is a young QB and will have some growing pains. We can debate his accuracy but there is one thing not debatable in 8 starts he has 11 TDs against 3 INTs. He simply takes care of the ball, keep doing that, throw TDs and hand off with this defense we should win 9-10 games.
4. Last thing is some creative play calling by Davidson. We don’t have a reliable 2nd WR at the moment. Seems to me you can create mis matches with both Goodson and either of our other RBs, 2 TEs and #89. I think Goodson/Barnidge/Rosario are a mis match on LB/Safety. Or you could split Goodson out, bring Rosario in the FB position and with DeLo or Stew in the backfield you have the option to throw or pass. Should create confusion on the defense.
I’m describing a split backfield with either #34 or #28 and Goodson, no fullback, #89 and both Rosario and Barnidge. Rosario could line up as the leadblocker for a run or a decoy or he could remain outside. It seems to me you’d have several option with this personnel package. I’m not suggesting we run it very often but several times a game it should work very well. And camoflauge a weak reciever core until someone emerges. Something imaginative.
This team can get to 10 wins and if we don’t then Fox is simply not that good of a coach.

I'm all for the creative play calling

Seems we added guys like Armanti to give us an added dimension at some point this season. Now lets see if Davidson can expand that playbook.

Seems like a fair assesment to me.

However I’m not sure we can still expect Moore to have growing pains(to any degree that will effect the outcome of games anyway) and I expect this defense to force turnovers…frequently.I can also see Barnidge having as many receiving yards as the average number 2 receiver in the NFL…weapons everywhere! Don’t blow it Jeff Davidson…weapons everywhere!

A bit concerned with offense synergy

The preseason was not spent meshing the starters in game situations, it was spent evaluating talent at the WR position and STs. I’m concerned we will have the usual panther slow start until the o-line gets it together. Oddly, I am not concerned about the receivers or TE position, I’m concerned about the pass rush and running game. Not concerned long-term, just short-term on how soon they get their game faces on. Last year our running game took a while to get going and we paid for it heavily, and this year is looking a bit like deja vu from preseason.

I think Smith and Jarrett will start at WR and do just fine, but passes may be hurried until synergy improves. One good thing about Moore is that when he makes mistakes, they typically aren’t catchable by the opposition like Jake’s were.

The Giants game will be a huge barometer for our progress, and will allow for much more accurate predictions to our season.

Ready for Panthers football

I have been reading on posts here on CSR for a while now, but with the season starting it’s time to participate. I was posting occasionally over on CBS Sports but they have completely destroyed their site (Big Davis I believe you were over there too?).

Anyhow, I too am a homer and an optimist. I completely agree that our preseason offensive showing was worthless. First thing I haven’t seen mentioned much (or maybe it was, this is a huge thread) is that Smitty coming back is going to take a tremendous load off of either Jarrett or Lafell. Without him there they were playing the #1 and getting the attention of the #1. Couple that with our run/pass ratio that was way out of whack and I think we will be fine.

My thinking is we run double trouble like there is no tomorrow until they bring that extra defender down in the box and then run the play action (which is usually our game plan anyhow). With an extra defender is in the box and Smith on the edge things are going to get a whole lot easier for our #2 and our tight ends.

The other thing majorly affecting our offense in the preseason was the pass rush getting after Moore. When we start game planning don’t you think we will account for that and dump a little screen off to Williams when they bring the house?

All in all we finished admirably last year considering Jake was throwing more completions to the opposition than to the Panthers and we had the 2nd toughest schedule in the league. This year if Moore protects the ball we will be fine.

MindMachine

It was MindMachine on CBS as well. I didn’t post a ton but am a huge Panthers fan. I live in South Dakota but get Sunday Ticket every year and haven’t missed a game regular season or otherwise in at least 5 years although I’ve been a fan since inception.

Cool to see another out of towner-homer-optimist type! We're growing in numbers I think.

This is only my second year with the Panthers and my first with Sunday Ticket. Needless to say I can’t wait till Sunday!
I couldn’t agree more with your point regarding the lack of game planning in the preseason. It seemed to me our offense was just running sets of vanilla type of random plays designed to get looks at personel rather than to establish any sense of rhthym or continuity. I know Davidson gets alot of heat but I thought his play calling and blocking schemes looked pretty good towards the end of last season when we weren’t turning the ball over 3+ times a game.

I've converted a couple fans!

I have a small crew here that I’ve sold on the Panthers. Last year was great since we are in Vikings territory. Every time a Vikings fan talks smack about my Panthers I just ask “how did that Vikings vs Panthers game last year go again?”. Shuts them right up! You will enjoy Sunday Ticket. We usually have the game on and there is a channel that has 8 games in small windows on one channel with the score and an arrow that shows who has the ball and where they are on the field that we go to on the commercial breaks. It’s great to check in and see how badly the Saints, Bucs and Falcons are playing ;) lol.

I have some insight on this

Go back to the Tampa team that Gruden inherited. No offense…none at all. They had a defense that gang tackled and swarmed to the ball. This team reminds me of them. You can say they had big names on defense, but not really. They are big names now, but back then, they were up and comers..except Sapp. The bright side, our offense hasn’t played a regular season down yet and we are already better than that Tampa offense. I agree, this is the beginning of a very special decade.
