I guess they like Wright

They could have cut him altogether. Interesting decision; no arguments here.

They never elaborated on his injury

I figured this was the next move. I wonder what the extent of the injury is

According to Panthers.com,

He played at some point in week one of the preseason, but not two or three and didn’t come up with any catches. He must have been on special teams, but I don’t remember seeing him.

for his sake

I hope Hilee gets a playing year credit for this season with the players’ union. If so he will be eligible for the NFL pension. He’s worked his tail off and done everything they’ve asked of him. He’s made the most of his limited opportunities. I don’t understand the negativity.

To keep them under contract for next season

They were probably going to have to pay them anyway

Hilee was stuck IMO

When he came into the league he was told he was too small and he neded to bulk up. So he was on a weight gain program and his speed (his primary game) suffered. When Meeks came in he then had to switch modes but it doesn’t seem like he has dropped the weight yet. He generated several pressures his 2008 season, but got almost no playing time last year.

The coaching staff works with these guys on a day to day basis and we don’t. He’sprobably done an awful for and with the staff that we simply aren’t aware of and they are keeping him around just in case for next year.

I figure he’ll be cheap and might pay off as a reserve lineman in pash rushing situations.

by adamwanderer on Aug 31, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with all of that...

but I’m going to be pissed if they hold on to Hilee and cut Eric Moore later.

by Novar on Aug 31, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok my bad on Wright i thought we only signed him for this year.

Poor D-Jax

I’ve been wondering all preseason why they didn’t give him any game time at PR or KR. He has blinding speed.

WHAT KINDA POOPIN' POOP?!?!!

I guess Young will have to make the Hall of Fame somewhere else. I’m surprised they cut Jackson if they were going to drop two others. Whatever. Lame.

Why you are all in love with Young? Just because he went to SC State?

Turk

The person assigned to let players know they were cut. Responsible for collecting the playbook and any other team property.

Coaches rarely do their own firing….

Really?

That’s so impersonal. They don’t even have the courtesy to fire you face to face? Wow.

How's that surprising?

If I can get out of firing someone I would

let someone else break the bad news. It sucks firing/laying off someone.

Ahhhh...I look at it as the same role

From the linked post above:

But for the most part, the Turk is vanishing. Few teams have one person assigned to deliver the initial bad news and deliver the player to the head coach.

Some teams, like the Giants, use their assistant coaches to notify the players. The defensive line coach goes to get the defensive linemen who are being cut just as the quarterbacks coach may go off in search of one of his quarterbacks. Moreover, the tradition of the Turk is falling victim to a shortened preseason. N.F.L. teams once played six exhibition games and training camp — usually set on some college campus miles from the team’s home base — was eight weeks long. A team in camp would go through three sets of cuts.

I hate to say it

But I kinda had a feeling that with all the guys we drafted, he’d be among the first players cut. Didn’t want to burst your Oliver Young bubble though, silver.

I had the same feeling with Dexter Jackson

As soon as we drafted 3 wideouts… he was done.

No surprises here really.

Panthers will hold onto Wright until next season in case The Jarrett Experiment is truly over after this season and the rookie-gang of LaFell, Edwards, Guy and Gettis can’t cut the mustard.

by dudemanhey on Aug 31, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

Finally

D. Jackson is trash in my book and always was the verdict is still way out of A. Edwards put he has way more talent and skill. H . Taylor was okay at times but needs to switch to LB to stay in the NFL so that is why we held onto him. Sucks about Wright, although it does open a spot up for Gettis to stay on the team this year which is nice. All in all no big surprises that I can see. Decent moves, final roster cuts are way more exciting anyways.

Go Panthers PLEASE CUT JARRETT and bring in Byrant or Coles Richardson and Furney LOL !

Gettis looked good last Saturday night

I like Trent Guy too… but if I have to choose between the two I’d rather keep Gettis and stash Guy on the PS

Trust me... I love Trent Guy's story and work ethic

From seeing the performance on Saturday he definitely has a future in the league. I just think Gettis looks like he can help us more immediately.

As a receiver, yes.

Guy certainly has more ability as a returner. So I guess it comes down to what spot is more of a need. At this point Gettis is probably the 3rd, 4th, or 5th WR, and we know that a WR in that role for the Panthers has not contributed much of anything lately.

I’m not so sure that Guy’s ability to be a reliable yet dangerous punt returner isn’t more important, at least right now. Heck, the way our defense has been playing, we should get plenty of chances to return punts.

Game 4 will tell us a lot about both of them

Both Guy and Gettis will get significant time, but I was impressed with Gettis against the Titans

He did look a lot more aware

He knew when to look back for the ball; caught everything in the area. Looks the part.

With Wright out...

and with none of the other wr’s on the roster looking like a legitimate answer to the number 2 right now. The Panthers have to at least be looking at other team cuts for a more seasoned wr.

I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

by Davejinxer on Aug 31, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

With Rosario and Barnidge

I’m not so sure that we don’t have enough weapons to throw to. Either of those TEs can split wide and play WR in spots. Or you run a bunch out of the 2 TE, 1 WR set.

Plus, we can rotate guys in and out of that #2 WR spot all game long. LaFell, Moore, Gettis, Edwards, Guy, etc. Either all of those guys catch 10 or 15 balls to equal the production of a number 2 receiver, or one guy eventually takes the job.

I wouldn’t get to heart-set on picking up a WR who was cut by another team. Just don’t think its gonna happen.

Damn.

Are we really that bad off at WR that we’re considering Bryant or Coles? Maaybe if Coles had been here since the beginning of camp and we could have seen something first….Ugh. The thought is making my brain ache.

Did Wallace Wright's injury save Jarret's career?

or at least his roster spot. At the very least I highly doubt he will be cut at this point.

i'd say it definitely helped his chances.

I think it could have

Several writers seem to think so including Steve Reed:

WR Dwayne Jarrett’s status on the roster is more solid now that WR Wallace Wright is on IR. The Panthers need some experience at that position other than Steve Smith, and Jarrett has the most to offer.
